    I'm going to be 70 years old in a few months and I owned the original Z1 Kawasaki. It was such an iconic bike. They have a 50th year anniversary package and I see that it is sold out already. It looks really cool. I want one.

    I've been enamored with British Iron since I saw the 1963 lineup. My dad took me to the local BSA shop to get a set of points for my '58 Bantam, and when I saw those beautiful new Beezers, I was in love.
    So my pick would be the Speed Twin. But it would have to have the narrower Street Twin tank!

    Spot on! I took 14 bikes out over 3 months choosing a new one. And I wasn't really looking at the Speed Twin. But I took one out and came back with a smile stuck to my face. The salesman new he had me!

    I had a Triumph Trident 900 in 1995. The fastest I ever went on it was 125mph. Didn't trust myself to take it beyond that, though it's top speed was rated at 140mph and I have no doubt it would have reached that if I had been braveer!

    A retro Italian bike that is quick is the Moto Guzzi Griso. Unfortunately no longer made. But it was produced for a long run coinciding with the modern air cooled Bonnevilles. An idea for a future video.

      I considered a Guzzi but the lack of representation, and service in central Fla ruled it out. Too bad, some of the new machines are beautiful.

      I had One for a couple of years, I regret selling it but I had to… amazing Bike and really beautiful. I think it can be said it was “lazily” fast. Most modern 900 are quite a lot faster, but the character it has is one of a kind

      @@amramjose Guzzi is one of the most authentic and charismatic brand out there. Better than Triumph I think, in terms of character. Way better than Royal Enfield, which is just a cheap brand pandering to all the new hipsters.

      There is the v100 mandello which is coming out in 2022, it is called by many guzzisti “the new griso”.
      I don’t know if it can be called a retro bike….looks quite modern to me

      I looked at Griso. I thought it was cool and I heard reliability isn’t bad. However, I have never owned an Italian bike and had my reservations about getting parts and service. They made a big push here in Orange County, California but after 3 years of dismal sales, they pulled out.

    I like bart's assessment of these bikes. It jives with my take for the most part, especially the Speed Twin. It's the one I'd most likely buy.

    Ride long distance and see how you feel about large tanks. I live in the west and our deserts and mountains sometimes leave a rider either stopping at every pump or going all over the place to keep from being stranded. When you’re 125 miles to the next gas station a 5,6, or 7 gallon tank starts to look beautiful.

    Good information and review! I have a 2018 Kawasaki Z900rs like in the video I bought new in 2018. Four years later Im still VERY PLEASED with it! Beautiful bike that performs well. Only other one I like on this list is the Speed Twin.

    My stock R9T/5 has run a 11.7 ET quarter mile at higher altitude which is pretty quick. My Thruxton R with cam has run a 11.6. The Thruxton R is a little harder to ride off the line. Both of these bikes will at the very least scare if not beat the not so good riders on stock 120+ horsepower sport bikes.
    When the traction control comes off the rider can make a big difference.

      The thing about the real high horsepower bikes is it's just for bragging you aren't really using all that power on the road just a race track and most don't have the talent for that.

      @@HaggisPower The miles per gallon vary a bit depending on gearing, however with stock gearing riding a stable pace it is always over 50 miles per gallon which is an easy 150 miles before stopping to fill up. I pretty much stop every 2 hours anyway to stretch.
      It took the BMW about 4000 miles before I could get it out of 40 mpg. Now is regularly gets 45 to 47 mpg.

    I love the Speedy RR and being a tall bloke would rather have the 1200 over MV's 800, but damn that 800 is pretty. As for Suzuki and Yamaha basing their retros on 80's sport bikes? I'm all for it, they look like the bikes I liked as a kid.

    I have the CB1000 and I think it’s a great take on modern retro. If I was going for truly retro I’d go for the Speed Twin or Kawasaki. Thruxton is great but it’s expensive and screams “I’m trying too hard”. MV like Ducati make some of the most beautiful bikes but their price and maintenance is their Achilles. Street triple and XSR are bikes that have incredible engines they dressed up in afterthought plastic. Just my opinion.

    Bart I have a 2021 black speed twin with 3500 miles I have out on it. I did the Tec Parts 2 into 1 exhaust with a decat. I upgraded my rear suspension to the gas piggy back style adjustable shocks and the front I did progressive springs. I also did a motodemic headlamp. And a few other things. I have to say that this is the most fun I have ever had on a motorcycle. The torque for 2nd gear power up wheelies keeps my 56 year old self young and the handling is just superb. My only complaint is a I am constantly refilling my gas tank. I know this vid is a year old but hopefully you got one by now. If not you should. It is a purchase you will not regret. Love your site man keep doing it!! Adios!

    Why buy a modern very expensive retro bike influenced by the years gone by when you can have the real deal as with the Honda CB450 K5 DOHC at a fraction of the price? This is what I have, yes it's 50 years old but I've fully restored it to as near as possible original condition, it's the real 70s classic ride with around 45 BHP, 5 speed box, electric start, cheap classic bike insurance, no road tax or MOT needed in the U.K. and best of all parts are still available.
    O.K. braking has to be given advanced notice and the handling isn't in the same league as the new retros but this all adds to the enjoyment/excitement, fitted with Avon rubber and Hagon rear shocks it's a joy to ride and own. Dress in new retro gear to complete the look and instantly be super cool.

      An RS what? R1100RS has been around for ages. And all you do is pay grants and grants extra for the new model. Those fools are necessary, progress is good, but nobody has the guts to buy the bike he really needs. For many that is a secondhand 500 twin. Do it, buy one and be surprised. If you buy a 350 desmo Ducati, you got all respect, too. Why on earth is a ten or twenty year old bike not good enough for you? Are you addicted to "New new new!"?
      Sorry for being grumpy. My point is, buy the real vintage bike, just be careful with condition and price. These retro bikes are beautiful, do you like the real deal vintage bike better, maybe?

    Ah, I missed the Moto Guzzi retro's. But maybe it is their own fault. They have a V7 Sport retro, and that is a very nice bike, but it is not exactly Sport anymore. They chose their smallest engine! What I would love them to do, is build one of their modern sports bike, but then styled like the old V7 Sport. Mind you, that V7 Sport was famous for being the first bike faster than 200 kmph from the shop. It was a mile stone. And when you got the chance to ride those old sports Guzzi's, better do it, it is a smile on two wheels.

    I have a Wide Glide that I need to swap to a new frame due to title problems but if I didn't I would buy a used Sportster and supe it up for 100+ HP. Better sound and reliability, and cheaper than any other fast classic non-Japanese bike.

    Speed Twins are awesome bikes. I've got a 2019 one. Personally, I'd have a slightly larger tank , so the orange light of "low fuel" doom takes longer to come on ! A quick shifter is also a "missing" option, although I'm not sure how well that'd work with the engine characteristics.
    I do also have a 2020 Speed Triple 1050 RS ( so the older slower Speed Triple) on which I do prefer the engine, gearbox, quick shifter and handling on that as compared to my Speed Twin, but in a beauty contest the Speed Twin wins easily. The engine, gearbox , handling on the Speed Twin aren't "bad" , they're quite good, but just not as good as my Speed Triple.
    To be honest , I never use anywhere near the peak performance of the 1050cc Triple or 1200cc Twin on the road, so if I have to sell one of my motorcycles, I would sell the Speed Triple. I would be torn, but overall the Twin would win . The winning parts being it's looks, and my wife will sit pillion on the Speed Twin !!!
    I have told Triumph in the multiple surveys they send me, since they have me down as a sucker for buying Triumphs (true !) , that I'd like a bike that looks like a Speed Twin , but handles and has an engine like the older Speed Triple . Then I'd flog them both and have just 1 bike.

      I ride the 2014 model. The bike has plenty of power but the suspension sucks for my 6’4” 245 pound frame. I am not thrilled at the $1,500-$2,000 that I would need to get actual modern suspension components either. So, while I still love the bike, it’s not inspiring in tight twisting mountain roads.

    I really think the Triumph Thunderbird 900 should have been on this list, it had a completely classic triumph look but equipped with a 900 cc inline 3 and man it is fast

    Nice video. If I was going to buy a retro bike today it would be the Honda CB650 R. The most bang for the buck at 8200€. Plus it is a blend of two of my favorite bikes. The CB400F and the CB750F.

    I just picked up a new 22' Z900RS. It's Candytone Blue which was the 1975 Z1 color.
    I went up 1 tooth to a 16 up front and what a sweet difference that made. At 80mph rpm's dropped almost 500.
    Anyways no buyer remorse here, bike has plenty of power & a blast in the twisties.
    I wish I had the room for several motorcycles but unfortunately I only have room for 2...

    This brings back memories of my 1950s triumph tiger 100 , 55cc o.h.v. which took me through Phoenix park "straight" at 119mph and had I to "throttle back because the gaelforce wind was lifting my
    "goggles" and blinding me with tears.. Lulu( my pet name for my "tiger" took me all over Ireland, the UK and down through France and into Spain..with codriver and lifelong Pal,Jim.
    I did all my own maintenance and still regret selling it!! but !!

    Matt’s dad here. Returning old school rider. Had a built Norton wanted a fast street bike. Went from Atlas to Commandos to Speed Triple, fell in love and bought an 02 Daytona 955i. Fast, noted for good handling. It’s me….

    OK, I guess my choice would be the Kawasaki.
    But I'm poor, I bought for 900 USD a XJ900 of Yamaha and made it retro. And it's alright. As I said, we have no canyons anyway.

      my 1991 gsxr 750 is a true "retro" air cooled workhorse with the first usd forks on a superbike and a better lean angle than a 916 :-)

    Retro means different things to different age groups. '60 retro bikes might include Harley Sportsters, BSA Lightnings and Triumph Bonneville's; '70s, '80s and so no will include many more; my favorite is the Norton Combat Commando. Different strokes for different folks. Ride safe.

    The Suzuki Katana is a great looking bike, it needs lower handle bars to match the origninal, and it is a shame the tank is not larger, but it is a lot better looking than all of the generic motorcycles from Japan and Europe. Then I was riding when the first one came out, and I always wanted one.
    The Speed tripple looks fantastic, it might be modern, but it atleast doesn't look the same as all of the other modern bikes.
    Z900 looks good too. Thruxton is cool, looks classic. Speed Twin, also classic.
    If I didn't already own a classic bike, a 1988 Lowrider Sport, and spent a lot hotting it up and making it handle, then I would be tempted by Triumph (all of there classic models) and Kawasaki Z900.

    Nice video, but I differ with you on gas tanks. Motorcycles with a 100 mile range are a PITA, striking the otherwise damn fine FTR straight off the list. I live in the West, and if I can't travel on it I can't use it. I like to ride, and for me the more range the better. I suspect I'm not alone in this assessment. Never thought about a Speed Twin, though...🌂🌂

    The Thruxton I wanted in my teens was a Velocette, but would I want one now? No way, it would break my ankle before I ever got it started. Meanwhile bikes today are so good, I'm not even tempted by a retro. My 1290SAS may not be the best bike I ever owned, that was an R1 but it got so I could only last 30 minutes on it, so adventure bikes are it for me.

      @@speeddemon9555 I had a Venom Clubman back in the 60s. One day at work I cut my left index finger. After it was bandaged, I couldn't squeeze the valve decompressor lever to start it. Everybody in the building had a go at kicking it with hilarious results. Eventually they pushed me to get it going. A 500 with a high compression piston, it was a devil to start.

    Never being able, or willing, to afford a '"snooty" European motorcycle, I get bored with the critiques of them with the same circular reasoning.
    And this brings me to my favorite motorcycles, from Japan.
    The Japanese bikes begining in 1969 were groundbreaking in that they were competing with the Europeans, but more were scary than fast, having great motors with lousy brakes and handling.
    There are millions of American Motorcyclist's who define their existence through vintage Japanese aluminum, magnesium, chrome and rust, vs. thousands of American snootburgers with Arai helmets, riding Triumphs, BSAs, BMWs, and Norton Commandos.
    My list of memorable, life changing bikes would be:
    1969- 1980 Kawasaki and Suzuki 2 Stroke Triples
    1971-1976 Yamaha XS650
    1982-1985 Honda Sabres
    1984-1986 Yamaha VMax
    I challenge anyone to deny these were fast and scary, and were more dangerous than the traffic they navigated.

      1972 XS2
      1973 GT380
      1983 V45 Sabre
      Love the Commandos, and it's always a thrill to see one.

      nice old bikes. the suzuki triples were also cool, more civilized, with the GT550 the standout.
      the sabres were very good, freshest thing the cycing world had seen right after the '80-(-'83)-'85 secas...but..the '83-5 nighthawk was the bike to get, the one to beat.
      both given expert riders, even the VF1100S had only a mere couple of 10ths over the CB650SC's ET...
      even the VF750 had an over 4" longer wheelbase and weighed over 70lbs which were carried on a 37mm fork in contrast to CB650SC carried by a 39mm fork.
      they ultimately both failed. the sabre was a cruiser/touring but with euro sport styling while, conversely, the nighthawk was a sport-tourismo but styled more like a cruiser with it's peanut tank, but boy what bikes were they both....especially the screaming nighthawk, the perfect all around machine she was (and will again soon be when the resto funds replenish)

      I was never a fan of the inline 4s, as they didn't have a pulse as the V4s, or the V Twins like Suzuki's 1000 VStrom, or KTM's 950 Adventures.
      My current V65 Sabre is a bit heavy for me, but it gives me the feel, sound. and rush I get trying to bend it around a big sweeper.
      The smoothness of the inlines are somewhat sterile and boring, but their performance is incredible.
      One inline 4 I really liked was Yamaha's 600 Radian.
      It was quick, easy to ride, and looked fast.
      I always set my bikes up with superbike style bars for a cafe look and feel.

      @@slideglide9418 isn't that the truth...ye, from the very beginning with the CB750Four, near perfect (meaning commercially...brakes, handling aside) yet the outstanding complaint being "it lack's a...'soul'(?)"...the four was/is merely the easiest, all around go to sloution...a great 'bike' per $$$ trade off.
      the Radian, truly a great all around machine, quite a few of my buds were so more than satisfied with it's ridability they were hesitant to graduate to a "bigger" bike....good power, vEry light weight and..a SIXth gear? (what took you so long yama?)...couldn't go wrong with that Yama Rad.
      i can see and agree with most all varying perspectives, simply due to different lifestyle apps...though most agree, we don't want problems and nuisances, we want to just ride.
      but i think you'll understand that..
      ..coming from a predominantly engineering family i also like to dik around with machinery.
      though the Nighthawk did indeed raise the all around performance bar the major deal closer was it's also an ultra low maintainance, most reliable sled, taken on long hauls with no worries.
      my other very similar bike being the 650 seca, that's the experimental mods slate, with the engine a cluster F from the same basic platform found in the 750-700cc maxim-X' (thicker lead axle forks, 33mm carburretors, etc)
      it's reconfiguration is aimed at all around improvement (mostly addressing the lower end torque lack with the X's 5valve head) but not at the cost of altering the bike's stock character from the midsize sport-touring's segment that it and the nighthawk literally ignited.
      but ye, for character, feel and looks i too prefer something more individual, like those triples....is it just (ha!) me or does that center piston''s exhaust dividing the odd number into two even sides (l l l) actually appear more normal?...plus, i want see(!) to my bike's engine, darn it

      I was once given a Bobber to test ride. Couldn't wait to give it back. I was embarrassed to be seen on it. Overstyled and overhyped. Bobbers should be about a unique machine built by their owner. Not a mass produced bike made by robots in Thailand.

    I've been riding almost 60 years so I have memories of bikes from several eras and while retros may appeal by their looks, I am at an age where I need the riding position of adventure bikes if I am going to ride for several hours of the day. So nice to look at, but no thanks.

    I know, everybody has a different taste. But IF I could afford it, I would have a Silver Suzuki Katana in my garage right now. I LOVE THAT BIKE ! Right now, I have a Red Honda 919 Hornet... I think it will out live me ! Oh well, Fun Video !

    I'm surprised by your very limited taste and appreciation for motorcycles for a motorcycle channel. I'm not a fan of some of the bikes on the list, but they all have their place and I'm thankful for each brand's take and impression of a retro / modern retro.
    It's art and technology combined, built to serve different purposes. Sometimes speed, sometimes an inspired artistic expression from the lens of someone who has probably studied more motorcycle design history than most of us. I would be less quick to voice my critiquing opinions, and just be excited to share a motorcycle to viewers, some of whom might actually like a bike you don't if you didn't accidentally close their minds of to it but instead opened theirs with some deeper informational appreciation, be it historical or otherwise.

    good show ,,,i have the yam , and its very usable ,. i like you think the speed twin is the one ,. but here in the uk some owners of these and other triumphs have gearbox and other probs which triumph cannot and will not sort . also bmw are a regular warranty visitor = be warned ;

    The title text for the Yamaha, you say Yamaha XSR900 but the title text says Triumph Speed Triple RR.
    I would definitely love to see Yamaha bring this bike to India even though I can't afford it. Still, doesn't cost money to dream.

    I have a real retro bike. A Kawasaki z500 from1981. It will do The quarter mile in 25 seconds and tops 120 km/h. Brakes and suspension almost none existing but its a really good bike to own , not anything fancy pancy. REALLY good mileage and insurance....

      I think it was left off for 2 reasons. One, you can't buy a new one anymore. Two, the idea behind this list, as the title indicates, is retro bikes that are ACTUALLY FAST. The CB1100 is definitely not fast by modern standards. It's actually slower than the 1982 CB1100.

    You missed Royal Enfield Twins... The Continental GT and Interceptor or Int (for the US) .... Might not be as powerful, but best modern retro bikes there are.

    Retro bikes in my opinion don't need to be especially fast but they should be lightweight and agile and great fun to ride. Just like they used to be..

    I have 2 bikes I’m in between and I’d love your feedback. I love the brat look normal handlebars, comfortable riding position, minimal styling, clean lines and a cool/vintage tank shape.
    1. Triumph Street Twin likely 2015 ish knowing my budget. You know these well so no need to elaborate.
    2. Triumph Thruxton pre 2016 or whenever they switched the top clamp. Then I’d swap the Thruxton handlebars to traditional Renthal handlebars. I think the Thruxton tank is long and cool and reminds me of the Nortons I wish I was old enough to truly appreciate. Dutch from Bike Shed has a video on a similar concept and I like the look. Plus I’ve heard the Thruxton handles and performs better then street twins. Idk though. What are your thoughts on these 2 options. Maybe some things I’m not thinking if that I should consider. I’m new to riding and want a retro bike that is easier to maintain.

      "Cafe" styling is pure British, and their bikes should reflect that same look.
      The traditional British Cafe racers had cool looks and semi-road race handlebars, but had horrible chassis', suspensions, and brakes, just as the Japanese bikes were later on.

      I'd stick with carburated motorcycles from the 70s through the 90s.
      I also favor Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki.
      Right now I 'm riding V65 Sabre and it's a great bike.
      I've always repaired my own bikes so fuel injection is out.

    Nicely done! Why oh why aren't bar-end mirrors going away? I am so sick of those douchey looking things - and yes, I've fitted them to bikes in the past - but why are they on every damn bike for the past 5-7 years? They look absurd. Anyhow, aside from being mirror-triggered, nice video!

    Fucking hate engines being labelled "torquey"
    I mean dont get me wrong the mt/xsr's are epic and I love them but
    Saying an engine makes more torque than power is a bit like saying I'm holding a lower number of bananas than the number of kilos i weigh. It might be technically true but the two measurements are completely incomparible in this instance and it's not really saying anything.

    2:58 This is funny for a Dutch rider only. Here you got a BMW, and it is heavy, just because it has a large engine. That's what it is, and on the road that is no problem at all. Tyres love that weight, you get more grip going a straight line, cornering fast might be a different story about limits. Large bikes are not light. And here comes Mr Licht. Guess three times what the DUTCH word for light is. Spot on. Licht!

    I find Japanese bikes kind of boring but I definitely would not mind having a z900rs next to my Triumph T120. Probably the only Japanese bike I would get.

    He does not want to talk about the original Katana. What you MUST know, is that one of the models had a modification. Oil pressure problem. The mod solved that perfectly. But when you buy a Katana, you should check if that model is that problem model. Has it been modified? You do not want a damaged engine for the money of a good one. Just saying. Katana is good, just check which one you buy. And search for details on the modification, I was warned, and I remember it was a very cheap Katana for a reason.

    Speed Twin isn't a retro. It's based on a retro platform, but it looks like an 80s Honda with a Triumph twin in it. The Thruxton isn't anymore either. Not that that's bad. It's okay to change the classics. One will encounter fewer design faux pas if they start from a good base.
    The MV looks like a Suzi with round lights at both ends. Not seeing a retro thing about it unless you consider round shapes things of the past.

      Yep. I actually have described it as the Honda CB1100RS with a Triumph twin cylinder engine. It's definitely a CB1000RS knockoff.

    Basically you mentioned them all :D... except the chinese knock offs. :D . I love teh triple RR even better than the MV augusta. I think MV kind of overdid it but just by a notch. BMW nineT or the speed twin would be my final two on the dispute. AS the (my) economy is going, I would be luck if I could add the z650rs to my w650. Mind that 99% i just comute... I like cafe racers for the cafe part of it.

    A bike with no windshield isn't exactly were I would worry about performance or efficiency. More of a sound and look type of machine. Just to show off a little. Otherwise a dresser for miles and a real sport bike for speed/handling performance. Both with full fairings.
