Stronger Than Logic | Smyslov vs Fischer | Palma de Mallorca Interzonal (1970)

  • The 1970 Interzonal was held in Palma de Mallorca from November 9-December 12, and was the last Interzonal held as a one-section round robin. With the tournament swelling to 24 players and further expansion on the way, future changes were inevitable. The following players vied for six slots in the candidates matches to be held in 1971: William G Addison, Miroslav Filip, Robert James Fischer, Efim Geller, Svetozar Gligoric, Vlastimil Hort, Robert Huebner, Borislav Ivkov, Eleazar Jimenez Zerquera, Bent Larsen, Milan Matulovic, Henrique Mecking, Dragoljub Minic, Renato Naranja, Oscar Panno, Lev Polugaevsky, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Jorge Alberto Rubinetti, Vasily Smyslov, Duncan Suttles, Mark Taimanov, Wolfgang Uhlmann, Tudev Ujtumen..
Ujtumen from Mongolia, about as outside as an outsider could get, actually held the lead by himself after round 3. However, reality and Robert J. Fischer set in, as the American quickly soared to a dominating position. The other contenders didn't worry about it too much; after all, you only had to finish in the top six to qualify for the Candidates, and there was even a seventh spot open for a reserve. So they played it safe, while Fischer kept working hard.
At the quarter pole following round 6, Fischer had 5.5 points and a 1.5 point lead on Geller, Gligoric, Larson, Panno, and Ujtumen. But then came a bad stretch: he managed to draw lost positions in round 7 and 8, but Larsen didn't let him off the hook in round 9. By now the lead had vanished, as Geller joined Fischer at the top with 6.5.
That led to the critical round 12 encounter between the leaders, Geller holding a half-point lead and playing the White pieces. Any normal grandmaster, when Geller offered an early draw, would have accepted to get an easy half-point closer to qualification. Fischer, hungry for a win after five rounds without one, refused.
Geller played inaccurately and lost a pawn, reaching a difficult rook ending. Eventually, a hallucination and a final mistake sealed his fate, and Fischer took the lead. The rest was a matter of technique: Fischer won two more in a row, took a couple of draws for a breather, then started his famous streak with full points in his last seven games.

The backstory of how he was allowed into the Interzonal tournament was completely necessary. Thanks. No need to apologize about the long intro. Chess games without a story are just chess games. Stories make them much more interesting.

You are absolutely correct. Also, there needs to be a new eponym, the word "agadmatorism." It's a noun, meaning "a clever philosophic quip related to the accumulation of chess knowledge, in particular when this knowledge is extremely arcane."

Amazing how Fischer made it look so easy against strong players like Smyslov and many others. This tournament was incredibly strong and he came out with one of the most incredible results we've ever seen. I don't expect to see anything like it ever again.

Simone Miglioli I'm not sure what you mean. Fischer won with 18.5 and next closest was 15 (three people tied there). Reshevsky ended well out at 9.5.

You can't please all 200,000 subscribers. Anybody who doesn't like intro's can simply advance the video and not complain. I'm guessing by the "likes" (over 1000 vs 10 dislikes) that most of us enjoyed the intro. The Bobby Fischer story is both sad and intriguing (Asbergers, OCD, and possibly paranoid schizophrenic). Thank you for your channel. I look forward to watching it everyday.

    • @heroricspiritfreinen38
      @heroricspiritfreinen38 5 років тому

Scott Adams I don't think that the likes on the video show whether people liked the intro or not, maybe they just enjoyed the game as usual. I think a poll would be more appropriate to show who likes what

Apparently the Russians conducted a whole series of psychological analyses of Fischer. Some said he was a sociopath, some a psychopath, some autistic. They all agreed he was a genius.

Bobby Fischer's games come across so deceptively simple and accurate that's its mind boggling. The highly instructive nature of his games is why he is one of my all time favorite players along with Capablanca. Agad, thank you very much for giving us this amazing series and expanding our vast chess knowledge!

I'm a novice chess player and I thoroughly enjoyed watching these videos!! They weren't boring nor were they too slow. They were, in fact, very balanced and interesting. I really don't like it when people talk so slow. I would usually speed up the videos to 1.5. With yours, however, I kept rewinding it! I wanted the content to really sink in so I can take some mental notes. So, please don't apologise for the length of the intro. As some of the commenters said, a chess game is just a chess game. I'm sure your subscribers love learning new things. As a new subscriber, I look forward to seeing more of your content!!!

I'm just guessing at what you're planning for showing standings in the actual candidates tournament. I'm guessing you'll show the standings based on the round we see bobby Fisher playing in. For example let's say we see the fischer game from round five of the candidates, then at the end of the video we will see the standings for the candidates from round five. Is this accurate?

as you said it was magnificent and the analysis, but it sometimes moves too fast for me to keep up
i guess you can't explore every possible alternative move because then it would take too long

If there was something I want to check out you can find the game and analyze the position with an engine.

I liked the intro. But maybe for those who dont you could write a time in the comments where the Game starts.

Exactly. I think that's the best solution since people seem to complain about everything. Good idea. #suggestion

Hello Agadmator, I have a question. When you give the puzzle at 3:14, is it also possible for black to win in this way :
    1: Qxe3 - Qe2
    2: Qxe2# .
I may miss something. Thanks for your answer.
Edit : I just saw my mistake, white can capture the queen. My bad.

At 3:19 A simpler mate in two would have been Qxe3+ followed by the Queen blocking on e2 and then black finishes off by taking the white Queen on e2 with mate as the white bishop on a6 protects it. Or am I wrong?
