Cybill Shepherd, Gerty Molzen, More on Letterman, May 7, 1986 (full, st.)

  • By request of a You Tuber born on this date. Featuring guests Cybill Shepard wearing nothing but a towel, golfer Mac O'Grady with an odd laugh and wandering hand, and 80-year-old Gerty Molzen in her classic performance of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side." Also, the World's Largest Topaz, Dumb Ads, and Chris Elliott plugging The New Regulator Guy, with costar "Ajax" (Chet Washington) and staffer Bridget Jackson in the promo.
    (Full Regulator Guy collection here: • The Regulator Guy Coll... )
    From People Magazine, July 14, 1986:
    When Cybill Sheperd's dress arrived at the studio a week before her scheduled visit, Letterman used it as a promo device. Not to be outdone, Shepherd, when she arrived, ignored the dress and came on in a towel. "It seemed appropriate. It was a designer towel," says the Moonlighting fashion plate. "Most talk show hosts only want to score points at the guest's expense, but Dave's humor comes from the situation."
    From a Prodigy chat with Will Lee, April 30, 1996:
    Question: What artist have you most enjoyed accompanying?
    Will Lee: Actually, a German lady who was about 78 years old. She sang "Take a Walk on the Wild Side." Every time we got to the ‘color girls sing' part, she would go "Doublede Doi, Doublede Doi, Doublede Doi." But seriously, it seems like the first time James Brown was ever on the old LATE NIGHT show. That was excitement beyond compare.
    And in another Will Lee Prodigy chat from January 30, 1997:
    Will: There was this one 78-year-old German lady who had a hit with Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side." She yelled at me backstage for whistling. And I whistle all the time.

    Fun Fact ----- I saw Bruce Willis playing Craps at Hollywood Casino about 5 yrs ago while he was there for some movie filming in Ohio. A few people would walk by him and his 2 bodyguards and say yippee kay ay, and he'd totally ignore them. I watched for about 20 minutes before getting up the nerve to say something to get his attention. I thought what could I say that would make him look at me that would not make him mad... I settled on, "Oh my Gosh, Cybill Shepherd just came in!" He immediately looked up and found my face laughing, and glared at me in that Bruce glare for a second, then smiled and looked down. One of my most wonderful celeb interactions ever...

      My adulthood began the day I was in charge of whether I could stay up and watch Letterman, and it ended the day he left CBS. That's a bit depressing -- maybe even morbid -- but it's also true. I can't watch these episodes without feeling like I frittered those years completely away, and I can't stop loving them either.

    I'm really enjoying these old episodes of a show that I watched often when they were airing originally. This one is particularly weird, which is always nice.
    Dave was so great... saving bad bits with a facial expression, finding humor where few have tried, celebrating the oddest aspects of humanity. His newer interview shows are fine, but Letterman's best work was on this show, during these years. I only wish that there were more available, and in better quality.

    Since you're taking requests, how about 5/22/91 and 5/23/91? I was in the audience for both of those nights, one of which was a surprise walk-on from Johnny Carson that bumped Jim Carrey. I'm also the one who screams, "FRED TRAVALINA" when Dave can't come up with his name. And, I'm on camera very briefly when the camera scans the crowd at one point. It was a HUGE thrill to attend these tapings. I was also at the 8th Anniversary special at the Universal Amphitheater, but that's already been uploaded.

    I met Cybil Shepherd in Toronto filming the movie 'Married to it' in the early 90's. She really had a fondness for...men, that much is apparent. I think she could have been with Dave but i believe he was still with Merrill Markoe. This interview couldn't have helped the relationship which I think ended soon after. Maybe Dave did have a new girlfriend.
    I vividly remember this woman Gerty Molzen singing this. Something hard to forget. I think I even used to imitate her taking extreme liberty with the lyrics. "I said Hoy Bubby, take a valk on dee wild site..."
    Also, Don, I believe there might be a Penn And Teller collection. I can't recall.

    • @Eroll113
      @Eroll113 6 років тому +7

      It's funny that you mentioned Merrill Markoe because this was around the time that she had left the show, and she broke up with Dave shortly after she had found out that he had been fiddling around with Regina Lasko for about 3 months beforehand, so what Cybill said is technically true; however, it still didn't stop her from flirting with him.

    • @kanealson5200
      @kanealson5200 6 років тому +3

      I believe you're right. I wouldn't care about Dave's personal life but when flirting is that obvious and statements like that are made, you just want to try and get some context for it.

    • @Eroll113
      @Eroll113 6 років тому +7

      Well, I'm glad that I could give you the context of that particular conversation. Now, the reason why Cybill was flirting with Dave is very simple. She had been divorced for four years at that point, and since she was desperate for love at that point, and since she's already a fan of his in the first place, she had no other choice but to flirt with him. Besides, she didn't meet with or marry her second husband until after that appearance. FYI: She's still single to this day.
