Fender CS Relic Vs The REAL thing (and I’m giving BOTH away)

  • Have you ever wondered what the pro’s and cons are of buying a real vintage Fender Jazz Bass vs a Custom Shop Relic?
    If you have, then you're in the right place.
    In this video I put a real 1969 Jazz Bass up against a Custom Shop 1964 relic for the ultimate battle…
    Here’s just some of the things we’re investigating:
    - Pricing (there's a twist to this!)
    - Consistency
    - Availability
    - The “X” Factor
    - And way more…
    Oh… and if that’s not cool enough, I’m also giving these basses away along with $20,000 worth of bass gear that you could win.
    As always, see you in the shed…
    Scott :)

    Keep in mind that collectibles have dubious invest value. For example I bought a 1971 Hofner bass in 1986 for $375. In today's dollars that's $881. A 71 Hofner would probably go today for $2000. I will have made money for sure. But if I had invested that same $375 in an index fund it would be worth about $8,000 today. So if you love that 1966 bass, buy it, play it and let it bring you happiness but don't confuse it with a financial investment by any means.

    I had to perform about 2-3 years ago, and i didn't have a bass. So i walked into a shop and rented a black American Jazz bass with white pickguards. Certainly no vintage or a relic, but man was it hard to take it back to the shop. It was hands down the best bass i've ever played.

I'd give my left leg for an hour with either one of those j bass beauty's

    Roger Wills (Alan Jackson's bass player) is from around my hometown of Ada, OK. Many years ago he sold his '64 Jazz Bass to a mutual friend, Jeff Lowe: a move he deeply regrets from what Jeff says and I believe him. I ran into Jeff at a club he was playing and got to play around with the '64 J. Man, it had the greatest action and smoothest tone of any bass I have ever played. I have a '72 Jazz, which in no way compares to Jeff's '64. Despite my many pleadings, crying, and gnashing of teeth, Jeff would not, of course, trade me mine for his. It's a rare day when I don't think of Jeff's '64 Jazz Bass -- it is a phenomenal instrument.

    I've had my '64 Jazz since 1978 and my '62 P since 1999 (bought on eBay!) There's def some inconsistencies - try D on the A string Vs. D on the E string - but with a good setup it's well worth it. p.s. living in a cardboard box with only these 2 basses as my last possessions. They'll be buried with me.

    I’m hesitant about. Using vintage Basses online too....it would have to be through a store that gave an approval period where I could try it out and inspect it for a few days and if I didn’t like it, I could send it back...without that, no deal...

    Yeah, I’ve fallen into the trap of buying a vintage bass online. It was a 79’ Fender Precision Bass. Lovely. Put most of my project car fund into it. Spoke to the owner, seemed legit, then I stupidly paid for it, then I never saw the bass or word from the owner. Lesson learnt there really. Looking for an old bass again. I just prefer the old guitars, I have a bunch of old guitars and they’re just wonderful.
    Sadly I never got my bass in the end, or my money back. It’s a hard lesson learnt there.

    I had a nicely battered 1971 jazzer, bought it in stockholm. after a few years I took it to the bass gallery to be refretted, & when I went to pick it up, spotted a 2006 CS 1966 reissue (mark kendrick masterbuilt, one of a hundred, gold, matching headstock...). straight swap. no regrets.

    It's not quite a classic yet, but I bought an untouched American Special P bass for $650 with the vintage style case. The guy said it was a gift and it was too big for him to play so it sat in a corner. It had not even been intoned yet.

    Scott, I'm a little late to this, but something I wanted to toss on the discussion pile- one of the other magic questions to ask is, what are you intending to do with it? If you want to play it live and out, to my way of thinking, it makes very little sense to buy a vintage instrument. If it gets damaged, stolen, or what have you, your investment instrument is toast. Also, I'd be very reluctant to modify a true vintage instrument. You're not going to put a de-tuner on or rip the pickups out of a true ''62 Jazz or Precision if it's essentially a museum piece. The reissues tend to be working musicians' basses.
    Conversely, my two vintage instruments (early 70s P-Basses) are studio queens that I never let out of my sight. For the artists I've worked with, as soon as they see those basses, I don't need to pull anything else out unless I need a 5-string. My two vintage pieces were well-used by the time I got them, so they're not going to have that museum-level appearance.
    Anyway, just my two cents' worth- thanks for doing this and hope you're well!

    @jamesryan1939 3 роки тому +1

    Missing looks and tone on the list. For me Vintage all the way if money is no object, but for people like me, a normal gigging musician, the custom shops are 80% as good in every way without the insane costs and gamble buying a bad one. Plus even know they are still expensive, I carry insurance, so they are easily replaced if it would get stolen or damaged on the road.

  • @petejackson9285
    @petejackson9285 5 років тому

    Most interesting, however the reason I watched this is because the question I think is the most important is what is the sound difference? If you want vintage, you want original pickup, you want aged timber and finishes, you want the 'vintage sound'. How does the new bass compare? That question wasn't delt with.

    WHY?! Why is the plastic thumb rest above the E string on some basses, and below the G string on others???

    • @julesvox
      @julesvox 5 років тому +2

      Above the E string is a thumb rest. The one below G is a finger rest, back when players mostly played the strings with their thumb, they'd rest their index and middle fingers on the plastic. That's why so many vintage basses have that rest below.

    Scott, you should ask the developer of the emails to change the maximum entries that people can enter to 30 rather than 50 because it is upsetting to new members who think that the "secret code" might be available to them when it is not and confusing to existing members who can't sign up for the 14-day free trial because they are already members. It should just be a matter of changing a variable in the automatic e-mail program from 50 to 30.

    When I go shopping for an instrument of any kind (except electronic keyboards), there's a few things I look for. While price is a huge factor, putting it aside, it comes down to:
    1. Sound. Here's where it counts most. I can't buy a beautiful instrument that sounds like shit.
    2. Feel. It has to be fun to play, easy to play, and consistently good at both. It has to be balanced, and I don't do extra work to play it.
    3. Appearance. This is just a bit of vanity for me. There should be a uniqueness to it. I like wood tones (my Washburn G. W. Lyon is, unfortunately, yuppie house white: boring!) better than plain paint jobs. I like a beat-up look over a pristine finish. I don't care about the back of the neck or the back of the instrument. I would pick an instrument made from unfinished house construction lumber if it had the best sound and feel, though!

    i always buy basses to play, not for investment. that’s why i have a cs jazz in seafoam green (also i have an original 74 jazz what isn’t that great). however my favorite bass of all is my fgn neo p with 77 pickups and flats. it slaughters any bass i played before.
    i have a friend who owned a 82 stingray, and trust me it was the worst stingray of all time. also, another friend owned a 79 p, it was good, for paper weight or firewood, but not for an instrument.

    Crazy cool basses Bro...I would choice a Fender JB above one of my Pedulla basses 9 times out of 10 iff I owned a JB 🤪🤙
