This is an interesting consideration. I am not a foster parent and probably won't be for some time. But if I ever decided to foster in the future, I might not be a good fit for a strongly religious child. I never enforce my beliefs on others, but I personally have a pretty negative view of most religions. There are some ideas that I would feel immoral supporting or condoning in my own home. For example, I think ideas about shame and sin and excessive modesty ideologies can be quite harmful for children.

The worse abuse I suffered in my entire life - even with my biomom - was with a "Christian" foster family who might as well as be described as a cult. I really think religion needs to be entirely removed from foster care. I was told I would burn in Hell, my mom would burn in Hell and the entire reason this family was fostering (and adopting) was "saving" children by "teaching them about Jesus". (They actually said this a lot). I was told how terrible I was, how terrible my mom was and all sorts of misogynistic garbage. It wasn't quite as bad as the Duggar family's Christian nonsense, but it was close. When I started to rebel, they started labeling me with all sorts of behavior problems and they wouldn't allow me to refuse to go to church. They just pressured me into going. The only way I got out of there was running away and refusing to go back.

That’s sadly the opposite experience that I had growing up as a foster child. I would regularly be placed into foster homes for weekend respite care that had it in their home rules for the foster children that it was required that you attended a Christian church every week or be punished by being removed from the home if that was your assigned placement. It wasn’t the only home sadly that I personally had to face that from with that agency as I personally wasn’t Christian and the agency worker would also actively punish me for my faith and help my foster home prevent me from practicing it. Up to and including taking religious items away from me, telling me I couldn’t celebrate my holidays, or preform my prayers. I’m almost 34 now and I still have trauma surrounding that experience.

That is horrible. And no child should have to go through that. I’m so sorry you experienced that.

Could you possibly do a video on recommended resources for trauma informed parenting? A list of books you read and what type of classes you used to prepare yourself, and a breakdown of what helped you the most in your situation vs. things you wish you were more prepared for would be amazing!

I love your channel!! I’m new to it, but I’ve gone back and watched a bunch of your older videos and they’re SO helpful. It’s easy to see that you honestly care about your kiddos, and you’re clear and concise in how you present information. (Also, your makeup is always on point, I’m jealous! :D) Thank you for your time/effort and sharing your knowledge with the rest of us!

While, as you said, you don't have to be Christian, many states only use religious based agencies and at times you paperwork may get "lost" or in "review" for extended amounts of time if you are not. This is something to be mindful of, especially those trying to obtain kinship care and are on a tight time frame for the child's well being.

Just discovered your channel! Lots of good info.
I'm watching because I am discerning between being a C.A.S.A. volunteer or a Foster parent. C.A.S.A is a great way to both learn about foster care system first hand, and still help a foster child if your not in a place to be a foster parent.
Do you think you could do a video on C.A.S.A. volunteering and/or other ways people can get involved?

Yes I did one! I can try to put the link here! If I can’t find it… I’ll try to film an updated one, since I did that one quite a long time ago ❤️

Are you allowed to be a foster parent if you're in the military? I'm thinking of going into the military and want to foster.

I'm new to your channel LOVE it! :) I'm just finishing up my training and my foster license will come in weeks. I recently heard some sad news that about have foster parents who get their license don't make it past the first year. Do you have any ideas why? Thanks

I struggle with the idea of supporting certain religions, like the ones that are anti lgbtq

    • @fromthefosters

I agree. It can be challenging. I honestly have never had a child that came from a super religious family. I would HOPE I’d be willing to at least keep some traditions alive for those kids if I ever did get one. I probably just wouldn’t touch on those specific topics… and if the children asked me my stance on those things… I will explain my stance in an age appropriate way.

@@fromthefosters As a social worker I see the trauma caused by many religions, including suicidal ideation that plagues lgbtq people. Hopefully many of us can be an example of acceptance and inclusion that will impact the children in our care for a lifetime. ❤️ I enjoy your channel so much!

@@jlsumner7 oh for sure! I would never intentionally perpetuate hate ideologies in my home. I guess I’d just try to do holidays, other big or ceremonial traditions, special diets if it was called for. But I’ll never teach hate in my home ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for being a social worker! I know y’all are underpaid and under appreciated. But I see you and I’m glad you’re here❤️
