Should I buy an R 1250 GS? or an R 1300 GS? or just keep the R 1200 GS I already have?

  • Ladies and gentlebikers, this is Doug.
Doug is curious (that's good for a boy his age).
He's curious about whether he should sell his R 1200 GS and buy an R 1250 GS ... or even a brandy-new R 1300 GS!!
What do you think?? What would you do if you were Doug?

I don't have the 1200 GS, but I did buy a 1250 GS Trophy end of 2023. It did have halogen headlight, but that's OK, I added Clearwater Darlas and Billie Brake light, BMW Vario side cases, and Touratech cylinder head bars. Bought me discounted as a 201 mile "Demo", best deal going.
1250 has LIFETIME drive shaft replacements by BMW, the 1300 does NOT! 1300 requires extensive and frequent driveshaft spline lube services, mandatory now, due to increased HP and torque. 1300 requires YOU pay for shaft replacements. Bought mine at Ventura BMW in Newbury Park, CA. See Dagan.

Either keep the 1200 or get the 1250. With the 1250 you can transfer everything over. On the other Hand, the 1200 is probably paid for. I would go for the 1250 adventure if I was upgrading.

I'm keeping my 2018 gs rallye! Not only is the most beautiful, but also the difference in performance doesn't justify the difference in money!

Keep the 1200 is the perfect bike. I made the change from a 1200 to a 1250 GS Adventure. I regretted it due to the weight. I sold it in less than 6 months. Then moved to a 850Gs and I am happy again. 1300 seems to be more slim and agile however I don’t like her identity…specially around that ugly front light.

I just bought a new 1250GSA on a great deal, knowing that the 1300 was imminent.
I took my new GSA in for its first service this week and test rode the 1300. I have to say I thought the new 1300 is a very poor bike compared to the 1250 and it’s competitors. I would rate the KTM, TRIUMPH, Yamaha Fazer GT+ as better bikes than the new 1300.
I found the 1300 handling to be be very twitchy, the gearbox clunky wind buffeting poor. The biggest issue though is the riding position…..My knees are significantly more bent than any of the bikes mentioned above which meant that after a 90min test ride I was delighted to get off and give it back.
Personally, I think BMW has seriously misjudged the needs of their customer base.
Typically 1200/1250 owners have bought their bikes as a do it all bike that is also a comfy long distance tourer. The new 1300 fails in that last category.
Hopefully the new GSA next year will rectify those issues.

The issue is not the accessories I own, which seems to be a key factor for you, the main thing for me is a more nimble and rideable GS as the cost of accessories is small compared to the bike overall. I was going to wait for the GSA version but decided to get the 1300. I would rather ride and enjoy than wait. Ive just sold my 2022 1250GSA after 18 mths and 28K and ordered the trophy. The main thing I will miss on the GSA is the tank (30l) but I wont miss the bulk and maneuverability. That said if budget is the driver and reuse of accessories a factor go for the 1250GSA there are going to be bargains!

I'm am old school. I prefer my R1100RT along with my R1150GSA Bumble Bee. Both bikes do what there designed for really well, as where the new R1300GS is a first year redesigned bike and has a whole lot of features on it that can go wrong. The R1200GS is a proven design.
