Hats off to toyota, theyve made there entire lineup much more performance oriented recently.
And yet still super efficient. This new Prius still gets 50+ MPG!
Lets give thanks to Morizo!
@@mrxman581 *57 mpg
Also 260 horsepower GR Prius Prime rumored 😏
@@handlemonium It depends on trim and model that is why I wrote 50+.
And less accessable
I never though I’d live to see the day that a Prius is faster than a Miata
Miatas have never been "fast". I think a more representative race would be an ND or the turbo Miata.
Yeah, the current ND2 would probably be a closer race. Keep in mind that it's also a manual.
The new Miata would run rings around the Prius. If the new Prius is a sports car, the base level Tesla model 3 is a supercar
and a BRZ? lol i own a Brz and feel sad
A naturally aspirated NC Miata at a mile above sea level. It was a strange choice as the competition lol.
I didn't buy my first Prius in 2008 to be sporty. But now we have three and a Lexus ES300h in the family. They are eminently practical cars for those of us who want lowest total cost of ownership and great reliability. The new one looks fantastic and performs well, too. Great combination!
Arguably the best engineered cars built, especially generations 2, 3, and I'm sure 4. Great balance of utility, reliability, efficiency, and comfort. Wish they'd make a full wagon version of gen 5 since they compromised the cargo and passenger space so much on the "sporty" design.
Fun test! I just took possession of a '23 AWD Prius (has extra motor) and am totally loving it -- traded my 2015 Honda Sport for it and yeah, the Prius is every bit as sporty, plus quieter, plus smoother ride, plus 50MPG.
Cool, I'm torn between the prius and the new ford maverick
I also got the 2023 Prius XLE AWD in reservoir blue. I will be getting mine this week. Can't wait!
@@jonathans4503 One's a truck and the other a sporty sedan that gets 50MPG. I suggest you get both.
@Jonathan S I mean if you don't need a truck, get the Prius. It gets much better MPG! But if you do need a truck the maverick is a great option!
A what sport
Dad started rolling before the word, "go" in the cone test race thingy.
Two points to consider - First, the 2023 Prius aced the Insurance Crash Test scoring their highest rating, something the Mazda falls well short of and secondly, everyone knows that the Miata is chick's car.
You can hear the altitude sucking the life out of the Mazda.
Lol, good description.
That’s why i stopped watching these guys years ago. All of their tests are basically useless due to the altitude.
Interesting results. Kudos to Toyota for making a hybrid sporty. While not a sports car, it was respectable. The next step for all auto makers is to make hybrids truly perform to their highest potential while being efficient.
That’s the world now. Lots of sporty hybrids. Porsche has some. Mercedes looks keen to make every model at least a mild hybrid. Corvette has an e ray. Bright future for hybrids.
What is mindblowing, is that they already have The Lexus LC500h and the Toyota Crown RS, that are both damn good and fast hybrids.
As Toyota announced the coming of the Crown, I thought they would offer the japanese Crown RS. But they did something else.
Literally all formula 1 cars are hybrids now. They are fairly high performance.

Love the matchup and nice to see how well the Prius did. I own a 2012 Prius (purchased it new) with 275k miles on it and would love to have the power and sport feeling the new Prius has. Great car, and it's still going strong.
Are you still on original battery? How is your mpg now if you are? Lol considering getting a toyota hybrid soon myself.
@@GhostAcez Yes, still on the original batteries (all of them, including starting battery). Only problems I've had with it was the windshield wiper motor went out around 200k, and I blew a head gasket at 266k. I didn't have to change the break pads until 230k. I used to drive a stick shift and I use the "B" function (breaking) on the shifter when slowing for a stop. My guess is that's saved me a lot on break pads because I use the regenerative breaking by selecting "B" when slowing down. LOVE the car, but whish it had more power. Best mileage I got on it was right at 53 mpg, now getting 48 mpg. I don't reset the second trip planner and use that to watch my long term mpg's so that's at normal driving = I drive at 5 mph over the posted speed limit, and don't baby it to see how high I can get the mpg. I've done all the maintenance on the car myself and change the oil and oil filter when the car tells me to. I've also changed all the air filters at regular intervals. Figured I bought it new so keeping it maintained it would last me a good long time. I don't plan on getting ride of it and see my 11 year old grandson driving it one day.
@Pete Nelson Thank you for the reply!, it was very helpful! That's one of the big reasons I want a toyota hybrid, reliability! From what I've heard the new batteries should last even longer and toyotas are known for lasting pretty much forever in general.
Just so you know if your hybrid battery does end up needing replaced, there are a bunch of videos on UA-cam showing how to replace it yourself for much cheaper than taking it into a shop.
@@GhostAcez Your quite welcome. Thanks for the tip on replacing the batteries. I found them about a year ago when I was looking for a car for my daughter. I found a Prius that needed a new battery pack and through searching learned how easy they are to replace, the entire pack, or just bad cells.
We purchased a 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid for my wife, driving our Ford F-350 dually as a daily driver just wasn't cutting it with the high diesel prices and living 14 miles from the nearest town. That car has been rock solid as well and is getting better mpg (54 summer, 49 winter blend) than my Prius. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well it did, and it's got some power to it that my Prius lacks. Something to consider if your looking for a Hybrid.
@Pete Nelson Thank you for the tip on the camry as well! Although I think the new prius is what I would go with now if I want power. That's something I never thought I would say though. But at 200hp it has some real get up and go!
Very interesting matchup. I saw a new Prius on the road yesterday and was blown away by how good it looks now
I bet it is discontinued within 3 years now, because the unintentional target demographic preferred the bizarre, unattractive look.
You honestly think it looks good, Looks are deceiving
@@MikeYurbasovichIt was never about how the Prius looked initially, but if you can still have the same or better efficiency with better design, bring it.
On the contrary. Now you'll have the original group buying this thing and others who would have never considered it before I've owned a Prius for 19 years and already have a deposit down for the Prius Prime.
@@MikeYurbasovich The only bad looking Prius is the 4th gen Prius in my opinion.
Loved the comparison between these two very different cars! Of course my favorite part is the interaction and chemistry between son and father!! 😁👍
What a great idea to showcase the new Prius. I just took possession of a 2023 Cutting Edge Silver Prius Prime XSE and love it. My former ride for the last 14 years was a beautiful Mica Blue 2009 Gen2 Prius, so I might be considered a 70 year old Prius fan-boy. That being the recent past, the Miata has a special spot in my heart as a former 1992 Miata (convertible) owner, and having done my undergraduate research project simulating the seal dynamics of a Wankel engine back in 1976. Living in south Florida offers a special use case for the Prius/Prius Prime - joining the 8-12 hour "hurricane escape" drive, where the most important number might be hours of air-conditioned stop-and-go per fill-up.
I think another great comparison would be the old Prius to this new Prius. Acceleration, braking, fuel economy etc. That might make a bigger impression!
Yes you’re right about it. Can’t compare old car to new car. What are they thinking?
I have two 2010 gen 3's. Always fist car from the 🚦. With fresh battery you have 400lb/ft of torque from the start.
10:55 It also depends on his reaction time pushing the button on the stop watch. Needs a laser sensor or whatever race tracks use.
Everyone that buys a miata knows that they should buy a prius. That's why miata owners wave at each other or pop the headlights. We understand why making the wrong decision on purpose is the right decision.
For old vs new the MX-5 did pretty well...with a heavier load, too!
The Prius is incredible! Imagine if on the cone test if the wheels were 225 width instead of the super skinny 195's? it would have been probably 1 or 2 seconds quicker
Glad to see the miata was still smiling even though it lost the drag race!
I think Roman really likes the Miata, and he fits in the NC.
9:46 In PCA autocross, we used to add 1 second per cone, so 25:40=27:40, not 35:40.
Or if you go by SCCA Solo rules the cone penalty is 2 seconds.
Love the Miata! That Prius is definitely a looker!
I’m not surprised. Miatas are “slow” cars that feel fast. Maximum fun, not maximum speed :)
Yeah, a drag race is not the car’s strength.
The miatas speed is measured in smiles/ph
Glad to know the Prius actually exists..... Can't wait to be able to buy one at the Lolo price of MSRP in about 2 years
Look around. I found mine at two different places for MSRP. And a third couldn't find one for me, but did say they will only sell at MSRP. But it did require waiting a total of about two months.
Yeah, I bought my limited awd at msrp on April 18 they exist, just you have to basically be the first one to look at them.
@@azuthal I've only had mine for a couple of days but I love it. It was exactly what I was looking for. When I saw the redesign I told me wife we wouldn't be able to get one for about two years. Then, just out of curiosity, I called a dealership about 45 minutes away. They said that they sell as soon as they are built. But they had one left. And it fit what I wanted. I put the $500 down. And it took about another month and a half. No BS. No upcharges or anything. I test drove the Tesla a week before picking it up. If you're looking for straight up power it's the way to go. But the styling is beyond boring. And a lot of the tech is literally about $15,000 extra. And most of it is just for bragging rights or trying to help you with the charging. I don't need that. It's as fast as my old Taurus. And right now, even driving 75-80 I'm getting 50MPG. Earlier around town I got 68MPG. This car is turning heads. Their is no way anyone knows its a Prius yet. With the rake on the front it looks like a supercar. I like the look more than my 911! LOL.
I haven't been able to even find one at a dealer to even see in person. I did see one on the road yesterday for the first time, though.
@The 8-Bit Guy I mean I had to wait for the first one to come in Port. I started looking back in January
Would’ve been fun to have a previous gen Prius too, see how much better the new one is.
Love my 2024 AWD XLE Prius. Drove it in the snow in Big Bear and does almost as good as my Subaru. Its an all around great car thats fun to drive.
Totally in love with my Prius Prime 2023 SE. I have 220hp
17 sec @ 84mph. My 02 sentra se-r with a 175 hp 2.5 and 6 speed manual does 15.2 at 91mph...
That prius doesn't do too bad!
Impressive job for the Prius! Also, where in CO are you guys located? I might've seen you guys around!
As a Miata Owner and autocrosser, your slalom skills needs some work! I do love the review and I am actually considering a new Prius as my daily. Keep up the great work.
I have to wonder how good a driver dad is. A Ferrari sf90 stradale couldn't get away from my lightly modified nc, two days ago.
How is it relevant that you are comparing brand a new car to one that is 10 years old? Why not have it race against a Delorean?
Because the NC is considered a sports car even by today’s standards.
So I’ve owned a few NCs. They need springs, shocks, sways badly but the chassis is great. New tires, coil overs, and sway bars will change that car tremendously. Everyone does those. A turbo kit also transforms the performance. So for like 6K you can to hunt C5 Corvettes. Some cars mods don’t make much of a difference but on the NC it absolutely does.
My 2005 Prius did a 0-60 in like 11 seconds. Thay was the best time i ever got.... Glad ro see the new one is better
Let’s be honest even with this power they didn’t mKe it a “Performance car” but.. i’m glad they’re finally making decently powerful hybrids. It scares a lot less people off of them.
Prius with B gear will probably cut the stopping distance in half :)
not really. B gear is good for coasting but it won't shorten the distance in a panic stop
@@ciello___8307 are you just assuming or did Toyota overhauled the entire braking system??? My 23 Corolla definitely brakes like a performance car due to utilizing multiple braking systems on B gear (engine, regen and brake pads). I’d say it shorten braking distance by 40%. However, it kills fuel economy because engine kicks on all the time to slow down the vehicle as opposed to solely using the electric motors to drive.
@@kpokfposkf just from my experience. . . Be gear definitely is aggressive with engine breaking/recovery, but I don't really think it will significantly reduce stopping distance in a sudden stop like this. Especially if you could also engine break using a stick shift in a miata
@@ciello___8307 it does, it’s exactly intended for emergency stops 😆😆😆. Turns close calls into safely stopping in time. You should rent one on Turo and toy with it some day, plus it’s a fuel sipper
As a former Prius and current NC owner I dont consider either of them too fast 😅 Both are hella fun tho, in their own ways.
Nice to hear someone else call a more staid Toyota "fun," they really are, even though it's not the same way as a car that handles better or has more power. My Avalon is like a dancing bear when pushed on backroads...composed until it isn't. And dancing bears are fun to watch.
Really enjoy the Father Son Sunday racing!! Right on TFL!!
Would have loved to see what was the fuel economy of the prius and miata after this test haha
we used to all hate the prius but damn, that new prius is cool as HECK
can't wait for it to get the GR package! And maybe turbo that engine!
Nice vid. You guys create some great content. I enjoy watching your stuff.
Love the miata comparisons especially driving impressions
Love it - entertaining video guys. Not really interested in either car, but it's still something fun to watch. Thanks.
wow.. I am a Miata owner and considering to buy Prius. This video helps me a lot.
Doing what you love with your son, that's dope. Can't believe the Mazda didn't smoke the Toyota
I know this is a silly drag race but man it was so interesting Bravo Toyota 👏
3rd generation and this new one are my favorites
Nice to see father and son happy
Either way…both are great vehicles! Very good video guys! 👍👍👍
Looks like you had fun! 🥳
knock yourself out putting the pedal to the floor of your Prius, I'll be too busy with the top down to care 😂
Mr. Morizo really left his mark in Toyota
I just woke up and don’t have time to watch this, but I have to make a quick comment. As I saw this thumbnail in my subscription feed, I had to laugh for a moment. When the Miata was introduced in the early Nineties it had a 10.5 second Zero to 60. In other words it was very slow. I know Mazda went “Zoom, Zoom” in 2004, but the tail lights in the thumbnail look like an older MX5 at first sight.
Their MX-5 is an NC, looks like an NC2 specifically (2009-2012). Nonetheless, "zoom zoom" was about the whole driving experience, not linear speed.
10 second 0-60 in 1990 actually wasn't "slow", it just wasn't terribly quick either.
the NC2 shown in this video should hit 0-60 in the 6.5-6.9 second range, which is actually WAY faster than most of the sports coupes and such from the 80s and 90s I had in my early twenties. heck, I had an 86 Supra (turbo straight-six) that could manage 6.9 seconds 0-60 on a good day and back then that was considered hella fast.
@@squirrelnetwork I have to ask, was your Supra 86 or 86.5? I almost bought an 87, but the salesman couldn’t give me a straight answer about anything, so I got myself another Mustang instead.
Looks like the surface of Prius steering wheel is wearing off. Any ideas what the issue is?
Sweaty hands
Fast Lane with the real tests we actually need 😁
You guys rock, these videos are excellent. Keep em coming.
Miata of all generation wasn't built for 0-60. instead it was a purposeful vehicle that brought smile behind the wheel. with reasonable HP output and decent suspension provides plenty of entertainment.
I think Roman's driving skills have improved!
We owned a 2001 Miata. Sure its under powered, but its a fun, nimble, convertible sports car!!!!!
I'll admit I was in the small group of people cross shopping a new Prius and a slightly used Miata. Ended up getting a ND1 with 20k miles.
I loved the comparison. It was really fun juxtaposition. Albeit the Miata is sportier. It shows the Prius ain't half bad.
Top up and at sea level would be quite a bit different results :)
The TFL channel has always been a bit frustrating (?) to watch .... certainly no fault of their own... owing to the high altitude testing location(s). The vast majority of their audience live much closer to sea level, and the results of various testing would likely be quite different in more typical (i.e. lower elevation) locales. Virtually every comparison test on TFL favors smaller displacement/turbo and or hybrid/EV powerplants. Nonetheless it's interesting content and I enjoy watching. Thanks, TFL.
@@jefffawcett1626 Exactly, and as long as people understand that it's no big deal as obviously a lot of people do live at high altitude. That said, for those that can't grasp the difference it really is quite misleading for them. I know they mention altitude in a lot of their videos so it does ultimately fall on the user to do their own research for their environment. At sea level I prefer my N/A cars but if I lived up there I'd no doubt be using forced induction.
Let's face it. People who shop for a miata would never buy that ugly duck prius.
And people who shop for a prius generally have poor taste , bad road manners, and would never buy an awesome little car like a miata.
What made you choose the nc? Its a boat.
Loved the intro when the Miata growled and the Prius hummed. Would it have helped if the Miata races roof- closed or with hard top on?
What's going on with the Prius steering wheel? It's all worn already.
Oh man the intro beats reminds me of bubble from the trailer park boys. "Who got your bellies " lol
I’ve said along time Auto makers create great looking electric cars people will buy them. Here it is! only good luck ordering one. If you have someplace to plug them in.
How did UA-cam know I was comparing these two cars!? Happy I went with the new Prius Prime now, it will be suitably sporty if this is anything to go by 😂
Prius Prime is appealing & compelling, buying one for my daily use
Really nice to see the father-son rivalry
You guys should test it against a model 3 but in a roadtrip race. Whats the difference in $ spent to travel (with fueling/dc charging and lv2 charging)
We'd also have to factor in while charging vs time while fuelling. It's important to consider.
This makes me want to pick up a used Miata.
You should try with the Prius prime 2023 with the Miata. Love the show btw.
Out here asking the important questions!
They need a wagon version of the new prius. If they're worried about sales, they can just raise it a little and add cladding like the original Subaru Outback.
🤩 Prius Prime ... permission to live rent free in my head forever... granted 💯
I believe the all-new Prius will be a game-changer.
When is this Miata going up for sale? I will buy it!
I've been waiting for this.
Two slow cars but I’m glad the Prius is faster without sacrificing MPG
And this is the standard Prius! The Prime has like 20 - 21 Hp more and much more powerful electric engine. I heard they might make a Prius GR ❤
Now lets see the prius go around 1 corner :) Miata aint quick, shes controllable.
It went around several corners.
Lol now why didn't y'all take a newer ND2 Miata against the Prius? (New vs. New) And not what is dubbed the tugboat of the Miata world from at least 8 years ago.
that "tugboat" is still the second fastest Miata ever produced. only the ND2 is faster. I hated on NCs years ago too, having been an NA and NB owner, but now that I have an NC I realize how much better it is than the other ones I had, LOL I'll happily keep my tugboat, set sail!
Morning Roman n Tommy..You guys remember two 90s concept cars?? Ford Zig and Mercury Zag...
Love the idea but how about a ND2 to compare new vs new
I love the paint color on that Miata.
The Miata DSC traction control is very limiting. You have to turn completely off or you can’t even spin rear wheels. It’s a handicap in a straight line but good for corners.
I'm a Miata owner had the NA, NB currently the NC
same. and though the older ones had certain charms, the NC is just a much better car and I'm glad I've got it now.
Great test!
Thanks dude!
Wonder how the AWD Prius on 50 series 19's would have fared? BTW, I sold my 99 Miata last week and have a deposit on a Prius. The Miata was replaced with a BRZ.
Prius rock Mazda is a geezer sports car. The Prius prime could make the Mazda look sad. Love the Prius on my second one.
A 17s 1/4 mile for the Prius is actually surprisingly slow for a car with that kind of power and weight. That Miata was really struggling at elevation, and a good sea-level 1/4 mile run in an NC Miata should be almost 2 full seconds faster, a few car lengths ahead of the Prius. The Prius is better than ever, but it's not quick.
The Prius is using its power different than you understand. Lol, it's not like a 200hp celica gts.
The new Prius looks exactly like the Dart from 12-16
Fun apples to oranges and the Toyota is better at what it wasn’t really meant to do than I would of thought.
Not the first car I would compare either to. Having said that, the Prius is no longer a penalty box. I have rented them in the past and felt that it was a designed to be boring
Crazy how big of a difference altitude makes I had a Miata back in the day and I was able to get a 14.8 @91mph in the 1/4 in bradenton
I wouldn't blame the Miata's tires when you consider what that Prius rides on, guys... Tommy kept the revs high, good looking late NC too. Be curious what I'd clock in my pig of a roadster, counting on the HR engine to shave precious seconds off that straightaway....
Oh wow, the altitude really hit the Miata hard. At sea level it's in the low 15s in the quarter. I've seen a stock 125hp Saturn pull 16 flat with Miata weight.
Btw, if your NC has understeer, yes tires are always in order, BUT it should get a performance alignment. Factory alignment soecs are for toe only and a very wide range. My NC had zero front camber and -1.5 in the rear, which made it very "safe". Adding -1.5 to the front made it A LOT more pointy and isn't enough to significantly affect tire wear.
the prius would probably be faster at elevation as well.
hybrids are also affected, more so than turbocharged ICE cars.
@@kpokfposkf More than turbo cars but less than NA gas cars.
