My mother cooks this soup on my birthday every year, and I cook this soup for her on her birthday every year. I hope your daughter can cook this soup for you when she grows up. It's a touching moment that your child is old enough to cook miyeok-guk for you. By the way, the longer you boil miyeok-guk, the tastier it gets!

Great video! Really love the way you cook and present. Wish you and your baby good health :)
This recipe is great itself but here's a few tips.
    1. Soak the seaweed in cold water for an hour or so. It softens the seaweed.
    2. Boil in large quantity. This really enhances the depth of the taste.
    3. When seasoning, add salt as though it taste a little bland at first. Add soy sauce for just the color and aroma. Too much soy will make the broth unclear. Boil the soup for more than 2-3 hours in low heat. This soup has more flavor when boiled for long time. If too bland even at this stage, add more salt.
    5. Substitute of beef can be shitake mushrooms, avalone, clams or dried mussels (all with no shell just the flesh). Pork and chicken are rarely used.
    6. For variation, try adding ground perilla seeds or sticky rice cake balls (kneed rice flour with hot water, take small bits, roll in circles with hands to make a ball shape and add to boiled. Balls will pop up soon when cooked)

Dzung! Thanks for sharing 미역국 with us all. Like you explained, the soup is an essential part of the postpartum healing process for Korean mothers. Here in Korea, we also have it on our birthdays as well to commemorate and celebrate the hardship that mothers go through when giving birth. I hope the time that Erisy gets to enjoy this lovely soup comes soon 💕
Lots of love from South Korea!

I always eat this during PMS (starting 10 days before period). There're tons of iron in the seaweed and also more in beef. Also, the fiber aids digestion and evens out hormone levels and keeps me feeling full and stave off PMS cravings. The seaweed itself is mostly soluble fiber and has very little calories.
When I'm eating this on non-PMS days, this is also tasty made with chicken or clams or dried pollak

I use chuck roast to make this soup! And soak the meat in cold water for 30 minutes to bleed the meat. I like to cut the seaweed into small pieces before soaking, I find that to be easier. For seasoning I also add kosher salt, black pepper, and soup soy sauce.

This soup looks so delicious! I'll make it with Tofu. I live in Florida and there is not a good Asian Market near me 😣 so I have to wait until I go to a Market in JAX.
Thank you again for sharing all your delicious recipes!

You can find this seaweed at Whole Foods too! It’s called wakame.
