I still marvel at Nigel Hawthorn's linguistic and acting genius. Never get tired of watching both Yes Minister, and Yes Prime Minister. Absolutely, brilliant!
Nigel gave us Sir Appleby, an immortal character for generations to come. An amazing talent, it was both joy and sadness to go through his life journey. Along with Paul and Derek, the trio were a masterclass!
I found this today, and everything Sir Nigel said about his earlier life struck me forcefully as I too experienced all the difficulties he spoke about regarding his homosexuality at that time, especially the black depression. Such fears, such hiding from yourself and others, warping relationships. Then a liberation, but only in later life. I have always admired him as an actor, but even more deeply now as a man. Robert, 73.
Possibly the best comedy to ever to be televised! Yes Minister & Yes Prime Minister are timeless and always relevant with a trio of magnificent actors whose sum is greater then the individual parts!
If ever I wanted to relax, I would see an episode or two of Yes M or Yes PM or read the book of the same. Even when reading, I saw them. They were the best and I salute all three of them and the other characters as well. Thank you all for such wonderful portrayals. From Sri Lanka.
I Was fortunate enough to bump into Sir Nigel in Londons west end many years ago, although I must have been terribly boring,in telling him how much I enjoyed watching Yes Minister, He was courtesy itself, A lovely man, sadly missed
A very moving tribute to a wonderful man and a superb actor... The world cries out for more people like Nigel and sadly there are too few... Thankyou for posting this memorial.
As a long term Tokyo resident, I wish I'd known he was on stage here. My loss. It surprised me he was gay, not that it matters, but it just attests to how wonderful an actor he was that nothing about his private life came through on stage or screen. I see many actors (here in Japan) who allow too much of themselves in the character that they are portraying. A true actor plays the part, not him or herself. Sir Nigel Hawthorn is not just an actor, he's a craftsman. To my mind, the highest accolade.
Andrew Jones Productions: Sorry you missed NH in Tokyo, I saw him onstage in London a couple of times and he really was marvellous. You're right of course about his craftsmanship. I thought, however, you might enjoy seeing him in the delightful 1985 BBC adaptation of E. F. Benson's Mapp and Lucia which gives him an opportunity to actually play a gay man, and a very funny one too. ua-cam.com/video/W2JBGw1TTPU/v-deo.html
there is an episode in yes prime minister which Nigel said, you can still be prime minister next century. Yet Paul died 1995, and Nigel died 2001, the beginning of the next century.
I didnt discover Nigel Hawthorne until 1985 of all things in The Black Cauldron disney movie. he did the voice of Flewdurr Flam the minstrel. Loved his voice and the movie. He was quite handsome too
Isn't it so true about all the fairies and losers in the gay bars and clubs. That has nothing to do with sexuality, that's about the sort of people who frequent those places. The straight bars and clubs have basically the same problem. If you want to meet anyone of genuine substance the last place to look for them is the bars and clubs.
Apparently some homosexuals hate the campy types too. Graham Chapman didn't like the ones who were exagerating their own stereotype, reportedly. Seems that gays are just like normal people! ;)
not a great career but he was good in mapp and Lucia, him being gay the part suited him well, also a reason he always wanted the book to come to tv. Otherwise it seems he was not happy with his upbringing, well who is not?.he had a comfortable life and not a great acting caree but hey we can't have everything
Had a brilliant career fromthe mid 70s. The sign of a great actor is taking two parts and never thinking the same actor played them.John Thaw with Regan and Morse, Ronnie Barker with Fletcher and Arkwright and Nigel Hawthorne with Sir Humphrey and George 3
@@dlamiss He also played CS Lewis on Broadway - for which he won a Tony Award. Joss Ackland played the same role in the movie from which the play was adapted. Usually the movie is adapted from a staged drama or novel. Ackland had the "edge" in the interpretation of the great theologian...being married to an extraordinary, lovely woman named Rosemary...whom he almost lost in a terrible fire...and brought a depth and level of grief deeper than Nigel... Aside from that, Sir Nigel was superb...lovable and kind... RIP...you were a friend to me...
Dear Paul Eddington and Nigel Hawthorne, thank you for all the laughs and tears
And revelations. All the best.
And Derek...
Hmm don't forget the writers.

Arthur H. Deters You are absolutely right.
Well put.
Sad he wasn't able to find peace for so long. Rest in peace to a kind soul.
In 2023 I cry on many levels. For one respect, two ingenious acting, 3 I miss you. Love ❤️

Thank God sir you found your soulmate. That’s all that matters, truly.
This soul biography is absolutely beautiful.
Sir Nigel you will be really missed. You were a master of your craft. A fan on this side of the pond.

Happy memories. Wonderful actor. RIP.
His life is worth to be the plot of a Tony winning play and an Oscar winning film.
A wonderful man. Good bless. May he rest in peace
So sad in life that so many of us just realise who we are and achieve what we wanted and then we die!
A lovely man...paid my dramas a very high compliment...always kindly and supportive. RIP, Sir Nigel. You and Derek (Ffowlds) are greatly missed.
A great man.
8:19 Is that Hiroyuki Sanada?
What a tremendous man he was Sir Nigel Hawthorne. God Bless you sir! .
9:05 Hiroyuki Sanada, who went on to star in The Last Samurai and West World, and my favorite movie, The Twilight Samurai.
I found him so funny and lovable in "Mapp and Lucia".
it's quite poignant to realise that he died two years after... at 72.
RIP Sir Nigel Hawthorne xxx

What a pure class gentleman wish he could of got married .... but it wasn’t legal ☹️
RIP and long live Sir Nigel Hawthorne (April 5, 1929 - December 26, 2001), aged 72
You will always be remembered as a legend.
ah those long monologues! hilarious
What a wonderful actor he was. And human being.
Thank you for sharing this documentary.
how beautiful the human soul is when two human form as one
What a great personality
such a great actor and clearly, a very special man...
Just WOW! Legend
rip sir Nigel
Nigel Hawthorne - an old man? In your dreams.
Why no mention of Georgie Pillson in Mapp and Lucia? He was perfect in that role, just as he was as Sir Humphrey, King George, and King Lear.
If only he could have stayed and played a little while longer. RIP Sir Nigel. Merci de partager vos talents.
Beautiful funny soul. At least he found love on the end.
Interesting how this was so focused on Cape Town and his youth. Not complaining - it's just an interestingly laid out documentary.
What a wonderful man.

Chances are that he had a much better career than you did, Irish King, you prick.
He had a brilliant acting career you moron
