  • After a gap of two years, Hadleigh returned to ITV with a brand new theme tune and title sequence. In fact this is the theme music that most people will remember, it’s written by Tony Hatch. Also a new car for James: a Triumph Stag replaces his Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.
    (Re-uploaded as previous version had the last 10 mins missing. Whoops!)
    Hadleigh is in London looking to hire a new manservant. Maxwell’s wife has fallen badly ill and Maxwell has retired to look after her. James is interviewing a number of men to replace him, using the house of old civil service colleague Oliver Mason as a base. He is somewhat perturbed by the arrival of Jennifer Caldwell, a friend of Oliver’s who has turned up to make his apartment ready for his arrival. She is an art restorer and is very forthright with her opinions.
    (Plot spoilers from here)
    Hadleigh is very interested in Jennifer, and somewhat disingenuously describes himself as a farmer to her. She is pretending to be all independent and has just leased a flat of her own but actually has fairly wealthy parents.Jennifer, for her own part, is very taken with Hadleigh too. In fact the sparks are positively flying between them and by midway through the episode it’s clear this is going to be the start of something major. Donald Sumpter had previously appeared in Hadleigh prequel Gazette, in the episode Between The Lines, playing a well-to-do chap called Paddy Fawcett who knew Hadleigh quite well. Here he plays a friend of Jennifer’s called Tony.
    Cast:
    Gerald Harper as James Hadleigh
    Hilary Dwyer as Jennifer Caldwell
    Nigel Hawthorne as Oliver Mason
    Ambrosine Phillpotts as Aunt Helen
    Donald Sumpter as Tony
    Georgina Melville as Lois

    That this man, Gerald Harper, was never chosen as a Bond 007 character, never ceases to amaze me! Aside of his naturally good looking, masculine image, his acting is innate, fluid, and realistic. He is, for me personally, a veritable Jewel in the Crown of British actors!

      Yes, a mystery. Though I'm sure I've read somewhere he was very much his own man, so might not have thrived in that kind of corporate environment.

      He might well have done what was best for himself. Too many sell their souls and end up miserable, despite all the fame and fortune or because of it. Great series and thank you kindly for your efforts. Much appreciated!

      Harper very much preferred the theatre to film and TV - though I agree he would have made a fabulous Bond !! Old school like Richard Todd was - class acts both of them

    It'll be interesting to see how it pans out with Jennifer. For all her girlish shyness, there are signs she has a bit of temper on her. Nice to see as Nigel Hawthorne make an appearance as a bachelor with an eye for the ladies.

    I think he is driving a Triumph Stag in the opening scene, an expensive and very unusual V8, don't you love having these old series available?!

    • @FoogouFilms
      @FoogouFilms  Рік тому +3

      Yes, the British alternative to the Merc SL of the time. The "unusual" V8 was I think two Dolomite engines - they had a bit of a reputation for unreliability. These old series are excellent for spotting cars you wish you'd have bought when still cheap.

    I want to watch Witchfinder General now, for some reason. I read somewhere that the magnificent Gerald Harper and Hilary Dwyer didn't get on.

    • @FoogouFilms
      @FoogouFilms  6 місяців тому +1

      Haven't seen Witchfinder General for some years. Maybe ripe for a remake - though not by Disney! Acting in the original is a bit suspect, though perhaps that's part of the charm for many. That leads me on to think of The Wicker Man.
      That's right, Harper and Dwyer did not get on at all. The Hadleigh documentary alludes to it.

      @@FoogouFilms It could do with a spruce up. However period pieces don't seem to be the same anymore. I'm from Suffolk and recognized some of the place names. My brother went to Brandeston and Framlingham schools. I watched "Lonely man on the hill" also. Incredible to see Gerald Harper later on. He hasn't changed much. And great insight, especially about Hillary Dwyer. Sad that she sounds to have had some "issues". Thank you. Edit: I've seen the real 'Wicker Man' certainly no less than 30 times. I watch it at least twice a year.

    • @FoogouFilms

      @thebedwitch Suffolk is one of the few counties I've yet to visit. At random, Lovejoy, Constable, and John Peel come to mind.
      30 times for The Wicker Man! Yes, a special quality to that film. Have seen "2001..." about that many times.

    Great series. But this one is really off somehow. How can he pick such an ordinary sloppy type, no character, nearly a teeny type ? There is hardly one point they might have in common, it just does not seem convincing at all. What a strange episode, perhaps the scriptwriter had the flu?

      They set the cat amongst the pigeons for this series. I suggest that once you've seen all episodes (to avoid plot spoilers) you have a look at the documentary I uploaded on the making of Hadleigh; some insight from the producer brought in for this series.

    WONDERFUL - the third series starring my secret love - the lovely Hilary Dwyer - who suffered so much under Witchfinder - Matthew Hopkins!
    Hilary - making her entrance here with a totally unrealistic clockwise 280 degree turn to look back at her car instead of a simpler and more natural shorter 80 degree anti-clockwise turn, as she follows the ridiculous actors rule: always turn to face the camera!
