In the game footage seen in the film, the Oilers are playing the Cincinnati Stingers. If you look closely, you can see future Oiler Mark Messier (wearing #27). Another Stinger-turned-NHLer, Mike Gartner (#11), can also be seen during the game footage.

I was the cameraman who was there with Rod Phillips. We were the only TV/radio media there, and it was a major scoop for CFRN (CTV Edmonton). I shot this with an Arriflex 16mm movie film camera, and this is the unedited raw footage.

Nice work Al. I've been a TV shooter since 93, starting with 3/4 inch VTR units. Surprised how good the audio was with film!

@@jonnywishbone17 And about how Edmonton was a "great town". Doubt he had much experience of it to draw on.

Gretzky's first apt was just off of Terwillager Drive just west of Whitemud freeway & south of 53rd Ave in a 3 story walkup apt. I met Gretzky when he came over with Vicky Moss to my mother in law's. She babysat the Moss kids after school. I met Joey & Vicky, Wayne came over often with Vicky. He was a very polite quiet young man & was always yes ma'am, no ma'am, yes sir, no sir when talking to my inlaws.

He had a good upbringing from Walter and Phyllis. All too rare today to see that respect for elders from young people.

holy crap, this is such a high quality video from the 70's. Impressed

If you think this is impressive, I suggest you look up early 20th century films, like World War 1 footage, because it's become a lot crisper & high quality. This is what people call the Mandela Effect.

There has been 5 generational players in my lifetime. Two played for Edmonton, two played for Pittsburgh and one for Boston. Suck it Calgary.

So Gretzky does in one year in Jr what most do in three! Messier is on the other team (Cincinatti) as #27 at the end.

Number 99 was, indeed, born to be a great hockey legend!

Love the, for no apparent reason, clips of the Oilers getting lit up by the Cincinnati Stingers

I remember watching Wayne play 4 or 5 times with my dad when he was 10 - 13 years old and even then it was an event.
The other kids were all 2 to 3 years older than him and even though he didn't dominate them like he did the kids his age it was obvious he was different/special.

Incredible footage and some superb on the fly camera work here. We forget, weren't born at the time, or don't understand media production to realize how skilled the cameramen (and occasionally women) of the era were. There was no digital, light balance in their camera's, not much in the way of post production enhancements. For example, the shot's of the magazine, it seems banal, but note how clear, the printing is. You can pause the UA-cam vid, and read the article. See how crappy some of the lighting is for Gretzy's interviews, but you still have an excellent, serviceable, picture. The images of Gretzky and his parents on the plane are iconic. If the folks who filmed this and put it together are around my hat's off to them.
