Just want to say, "Thank you, Chris!" for bringing up THE DARK SECRET OF HARVEST HOME!
Good job, man! I also saw this movie, when it was aired on TV in 1978. (I was 12) And although there are MANY made-for-TV movie delights and strong memories from the 70s and early 80s, this particular film seems to be one of the more obscure entries. As you said, NO DVD release, and finding the whole thing on VHS is no easy task either.
Anyway, whenever I bring this one up to friends, they never know what the hell I'm talking about.. with the guy's tongue in a Mason jar, or any of those acutely perverted scenes with the alluring women!
So again, thanks for bringing this one into the mix, Chris!
I actually dig all of your picks, yours and Pete's. I myself enjoy all of these. To me, Made-for-TV films of the 1970s were very special indeed! And although they might not have the nudity, they definitely have the badass subject matter!
    Marc

"Duel" is a great film, period. The fact that it was Spielberg's movie debut, as a *network TV-movie* in '71, really makes me miss the days of thriller/horror TV movies, even more than I already do! I loved "Dark Night of the Scarecrow" and many others, including 1985's "Chiller," directed by none other than Wes Craven. I wish that one had been released on Blu-ray, with a Craven commentary, before he died.

"Duel" is an awesome film. Some discussions on other sites have indicated that the multiple license plates on the old truck were 'souvenirs' from other victims the truck ran off the road. So the truck driver was definitely intending to kill Weaver's character.

    • @jcollins1305

Could be, but back then trucks had to plate their vehicles in the states they operating through. Nowadays they use the IRP paperwork instead of multiple license plates.

Do you guys remember the series "The Dark Room"? It was a series in the 1980s that aired prime time on Fridays and had different stories each episode like the Twilight Zone. I think it only ran one season before getting cancelled. It was a really good show. Another good series developed later on was hosted by Henry Rollins called "Night Visions". It also had different stories each episode. Really good writing. The one episode that starred Chad Allen had his character as having some type of curse on him. Everyone that came in to contact with him would react with hate towards him. Another really good episode starred Michael Rappaport and had him inheriting an old estate. Turned out his ancestors had exploited the local town folk pretty harshly and someone had placed a curse on his family. Despite being offered a fair price to sell the estate, Rappaport's character succumbs to greed and tries to live in the estate with grave consequences before all is said and done.

Q actually got a theatrical...well mostly Drive Ins...release in the early 80's. However like many of Larry Cohen's films it got popular mostly due to late night showings on The Movie Channel back in the day. It's got a great performance by Michael Moriarty as a two-bit petty criminal who stumbles upon the nest of the creature in of all places the Chrysler Building.

I believe ,from the last shot you see of the driver's boots, it show it's a woman in "Duel" and that was Spielberg's way of intimating Weaver is unfaithful on these trips (indicated by the calls to his wife) and the truck symbolizes the looming consequences of being unfaithful.

The family takes a vacation to camp on a beach only to be tormented by some really strange Hippies. The other Dennis Weaver movie was about his Psycho daughter's Reign of Terror on the family involving a pizza cutter of among other methods. Very unique film and Valerie Harper plays the girl's mother and Dennis Weaver the father

Four rare Anthony Perkins TV movies from the same year, 1990's Daughter of Darkness, Psycho 4, The Ghost Writer and I'm Dangerous Tonight. The first one is Stuart Gordon's vampire flop, the second Perkins' last Norman Bates outing, the third about a writer getting inspiration from weird creatures, the fourth one sees Perkins as a teacher with a murderous ancient Aztec priest's red cloak. None are truly great to be honest but I do kind of dig them.

Some more TV Horror/Sci Fi that I didn't see mentioned:
A cold night's death - this is the one with the super-intelligent monkeys knocking off the researchers at an arctic base.
Haunts of the Very Rich - creepy, but I seem to recall it had a dumb ending.
The Love War - EVERYBODY dies in the end.
There was also a feature length omnibus series on NBC in the late 60's/early 70's called Name of the Game that had a couple of memorable episodes. One was Spielberg's 2nd directorial effort named Los Angeles: 2017 an ecological nightmare that's pretty good. It also had an anti-drug episode that had some pretty effective make-up effects for the time that scared the living hell out of me.

How I wish more movies were 75 minutes. Oddly enough when bands started releasing albums in the CD era that were far too long, filmmakers would make movies that lasted hours. Even a giant like Scorsese is seriously guilty of this. Why do so many creators think that an 170 minute film is somehow superior? Less is more!

Nowadays, a movie made in 1978 would take three week, as for every three minutes of movies, there are seven minutes of ads.

Saw a horror splatter movie many years ago. Can't remember the name. But it was about a guy who killed a lot of women and scalped them and undressed them. Took their clothes and hair back home and dressed up mannequin dolls. Later the dolls wakes up and kill him. The next morning the police burst in and find his lifeless body surrounded by the mannequin dolls.
It might be the movie Maniac from 1980 by William Lustig
When I was younger they showed the old black and white Frankenstein with Boris Karloff. My dad watched it but I was in his mind to young and had to go to bed. Bummer!

You've just described Maniac, however I am 100% certain that Lustig's film never played, uncut or not, on any form of network television.

@@tomshepard2179 I think I watched it on a Hotel network on a holiday. So not on any television. Actually I think it was in Germany so it was synchronised to german 🙄. Bad Segeberg if I'm not mistaken. Must have been in 1988. So long ago...

Pete “Simpleton” is an offensive word to use for someone who is intellectually impaired. My wife has made it her life’s work to help people overcome these type of stereotypes.
