I just rewatched Episode 26 today, too, and damn... the look on his face so many times in this episode - like bracing for loss and watching a trainwreck at the same time :(
Does Liam ever reveal what was said in that whisper? I’m curious because I see so many comments about sexual tension in that scene, but all I saw was Essek getting increasingly annoyed at them for treating him like a taxi service.
Considering the shift Fjord has made, I think homebrewing a shambling mound instead of Barlgura would be fitting. Same CR. Maybe even switch out the blood component to fresh rose water.
I have genuine trouble believing Laura and Liam aren’t siblings. Laura: “Maybe if the mini was better Frumpkin would do a better job of doing anything.” Liam: “You shut your mouth Laura Bailey.”
Caduceus’s whole speech followed by the “follow that fly!” and the following perception roll has to be a top 3 Caduceus speaking with nature moment in the entire campaign lmao. It was so silly
My favorite is that he says "no regrets," as if a giant tree is the most badass thing Cad could have done X'D And honestly, he probably thinks that's true
I hate it so much when they overcomplicate things. Long rest, then catch up with Obann and destroy them. It's 3v6 in a high-level party, easy enough to do. Instead they keep wasting spells and time every time. They went to Zadash only to return instantly, without talking to the Gentleman, despite it being one of the reasons they came there in the first place. I don't understad their reasoning at all.
ThatGuy This particular time they had reason to be in a rush, they were definitely behind and Oban was going to be trying to finish that ritual. If they had gotten clearer information about where the heart was and had Essek bamf them right to the tree, though? Whole different episode.
@@JB-xl2jc def. Right you are. This episode was so stressful! Usually because I'm the guy in my games that doesn't mind resting up between each encounter, so the breakneck pace these guys were going at, I kept fearing the worst for them! Luckily, they had "the best loss possible" this episode instead of "the worst win".
@@dedf15 to be completely honest a win really wasn't gonna happen, I don't think charm would stop obann from taking the heart from them if they got it and if they hurt him then he's just gonna kill them all since all the spellcasters were tapped which is 4 out of 6 of their party.
I'll admit it. I thought this would be the last episode of Campaign 2. I thought they'd made a bad plan and gotten in totally over their heads. The Mighty Nein were looking down Oban, Yasha, and the Laughing Hand with two of their casters virtually tapped and no means of ready escape. When the Hand and its hounds were charging them, I thought they were donezo. But then... "Eventually, some day, somebody will pray for a miracle, pray for something to save them, to whatever gods are nearby, and that prayer will be answered because you’ll show up. That’s how it works. That’s what a champion is." Fjord: "I cast Charm Monster."
2 things A video with the section of Cadeuceus telling Fjord that quote ua-cam.com/video/9-EAn25noF0/v-deo.html And also when Fjord cast this Matt had Travis roll a D20 check with his Charisma modifier. Which was probably a contest between Fjords charm and Obans charm
This storyline with Yasha has made me way more attached to her. I prefer this way of explaining away Ashley's absence compared to others playing her. Now I'm eager for her rescue and for the mind control to break.
Yeah I think it’s good that they planned ahead of time to have an arc for Yasha while Ashley wrapped things up on the show she was filming. The other times, it was kind of abrupt and she’d be present only for a couple of episodes in a row so it wouldn’t have made it so easy to set up such a great arc like this. To this point we haven’t had an explanation of where she was disappearing to, but I’m sure in the coming episodes there’ll be an explanation for it. I’m glad Ashley was able to be there for as many Xhorhas episodes in a row as she could, to set up this arc
I really admire Sam's ability to ease the tension, everyone was super stressed and angry at the end of this episode but he made everyone laugh right at the end, which is what everyone needs after a session like that
Don't take this all too seriously, it's mainly meant as a joke. But it's kind of fun to see that it's the women who are most distraught by the whole thing not going their way; so much for the male power fantasy huh? haha :D (edit: spelling error(s))
He's done this a LOT during the campaign. Mostly because he's just like that, but IRL he seems very cognisant in regards to the feel of things and uses his flippant character to get away with it.
@@Micras08 I fucking hate being 'that' person in the community that brings it up, but really it was Marishas not paying attention to the input of anyone else, and constantly either ignoring or ruining anyone elses plans that made the frustrated. I feel so bad for Taliesin every time they run into a hopeless fight, he just gets that thousand mile stare, probably having Molly flashbacks, poor guy.
I mean, he just gets tired of dealing with his teammates killing him and then laughing about it, almost endlessly. At first, yeah it's worth maybe a giggle or two, but this the fourth or fifth time Cad has been fucked up by his team, whether directly (see the amount of times Nott has damaged Cad with careless explosives, or when the M9 strand Cad out away from the party, mid-combat)
He also acts like a know it all literally all the time and when something doesnt go his way he gets all butthurt about. 3:24:48 he thinks he knows how a spell works and immediately gets proven wrong for example.
Clotilde Boulanger ah... I read it more as “don’t touch me!” and a combination of not being a touchy person and not feeling a connection with M9 besides business. His cool response surprised me a bit.
I actually yelled out loud when Caleb did that hahaha! Liam looked very pleased with himself too. :D I hadn't really seen potential for a ship before, but I see it now. I wish Essek's response had been a little more indicative of reciprocated feelings... hmmm!
its so heartbreaking how Caleb is so adamant about getting Yasha away from the people imprisoning her - like of course he'd be the one trying so hard to get her away from her abusers and slavers because thats where he used to be, and he doesn't want that for her any longer that she has to endure it
@@melodramaticjerbear155 To be fair, the most persuasive players (not characters) were the ones making decisions for the group this episode it seemed, and not only were they tactically bad decisions, but they were also made for out of character bloodthirst reasons as admitted by Marisha)... :-/
@@melodramaticjerbear155 Well the main reason why they didn´t try to save Yasha is because it wouldn´t fit with Ashleys schedule. It would be pretty weird to let Matt play her after beign imprisoned and forced to do all that stuff. @@chrisb4726 I'm pretty new to all of this and really don't want to be hard on them, because in general I love the show... but this is something that stood out to me as a newbie. I'm surprise there's no real decision-making process, even an informal one. no one really saying "hey, can we listen to our quieter party members (or quieter, people at the table) for a moment - and consider what they have to say? on the other hand, I also see how sometimes Matt imposes a sort of time limit on decisions, creating consequences and a sense of urgency if the group takes too long to make a decision. so I do understand they're under pressure, just hard to see how that plays out sometimes...

I just love the absolute certainty that Caduceus has after talking with plants and animals when no part of that ability lets him understand them in return.
To be fair, you can understand the most basic of what an animal is feeling based on body language. Also, considering he knows that animals understand him, he can make further inferences on that. Sure it isn't as good as straight conversation, but a dog with it's teeth bared is less likely to be helpful than the one wagging its tail happily.

loved how they went through all that effort to take their horses with them because "they cost too much" and then proceeded to try and pawn them off to Essek.

@@lynxerax7011 yup, you can also see that all they wanted was to fight. They kept mentioning that it's been 4 episodes from their last fight. So they have very poor planning , and kept pushing and not resting.
But like....the day molly died they had a good plan...the execution was a problem, largely because nott spent time trying (and failing) to free people that werent fjord/jester/yasha. Had nott moved to a different cart when she saw that that cart wasnt the right one...essentially if nott had focused on specifically finding the captive m9 members things could have gone very differently. Even after molly died, it was entirely possible that one of the 2 caster had a diamond on them for their own spells, and freeing jester could have permitted her to revivify. Overall it was a pretty good plan. They just...executed it poorly, and abandoned it too soon.

Squire Ladon I think it’s the opposite, it’s ashley being unable to join and Matt rewriting the story a bit around that. But the story is going great, so,
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this was planned as a way to deal with Ashley's expected absence for filming. @@brandonholt6717 Just double-checked, the vial of blood is always necessary but you can use the vial of blood when you're casting the spell to make a circle instead of just as a component, which keeps the demon in place
@@rosiegarcia858 I would assume so. Also, I think there is a decent chance it was just Caleb attempting to be friendly with another person finally. I mean how uncommon is it for someone to place a hand on your arm when they're trying to calm you down. I think the only thing that made that interaction off at all was Liam stressing the action.
I will never be one of the fans who complain about how the cast of Critical Role play their characters and make their decisions. I can, however, sit here and cringe in solidarity with Fjord as everyone charges head first into a losing fight.
I mean, you can wait until there's no possible way of winning, then die fully rested. Might as well go off to your own private island like Vandran, and wait for the end of the world. You can risk death now, or guarantee it later. Those are the only two choices.
Savannah Shane I’m just wondering why he didn’t have the balgura follow behind them trying to sound like the laughing hands footfalls to give them a bit of a boon
Matt definitely misread the Jeremy Crawford tweet on Summon Greater Demon. I mean, they haven’t been running the spell correctly the whole time anyway, but he CAN use an arcane focus to cast the spell, but he needs the blood to create the circle that protects him/the party from the demon when/if he loses control of it.
I think it's just the caster that the circle protects, not the whole party unfortunately. :( But yeah he did misread it, I'm glad they ended up getting to use the spell anyway!
@@Lenaseymour4323 Yep Tim is right, as long as you have an arcane focus that can substitute the components (since they have no cost), then the blood isn't needed UNLESS you want to create the circle mentioned in the spell (which is what the tweet pertains to). Of course a DM can choose otherwise and decide that the blood has a cost based on the unique requirements (invalidating the arcane focus as a supplement), but RAW it does not. I think from memory Matt addressed this in the next episode anyway as it sounds like he got a lot of tweets about it, lol. Personally in a campaign I'm playing, I asked my DM to rule that blood was required and the arcane focus didn't replace it, because the spell seems even cooler when you've regularly got to extract vials of blood from recently deceased humanoids...

@@LegacySoldier As a DM, I allow it. If you cast Catnap on yourself, your mindset holds a state concentration as you sleep. The benefits apply and if somehow you take damage, then you'll roll a con saving throw to maintain concentration. A low roll wakes you up and removes the benefits of the spell. A high roll keeps the spell and you do not wake up.
@@XoIoRouge I'd allow it too, given that Arcane Recovery isn't OP at all, as you're burning a spell to get a spell slot back, that drain would be enough for me to counter the effect. Also a sleeping wizard is just a target. 3 members magically willed to sleep? Trouble.
@@LegacySoldier Catnap isn't a concentration spell. It's just a straight 10 minute sleep or until you take damage or get shaken awake. Don't forget to read your spells, people.
As an ancient DM, in reaction to remarks of Matt going easy on them: Spoilers Off course Oban left with Yasha when he got the heart. His only goal in that forest is getting the heart, to reanimate the next monster. The moment he has that ingredient he a. wants to perform the ritual to create the monster, b. wants out of that nasty forest and to a nice workshop and c. sees a spellcaster with it’s Mage Hand on the firsr ingredient and wants to end that threat the fastest way possible, d. does not want to run the risk that his Charm of Yasha gets dispelled by her friends, and e. wants to get away from the party that almost killed him before TLH joined the fray last time. (who seems to be out of the picture, probably caused by that same party) That’s a smart villain making an exit to safety, to play with his new toy and off kill the party on another day.
Matthijs Claessen yeah anyone complaining about that decision doesn’t understand the grand scheme of things. He can find and kill m9 anytime he wants (at least he believes so) right then he had what he came for and there was no logical reason to stay and fight.

Okay I feel like Essek has a soft spot for Caleb and Caleb was taking advantage of that when he made it clear "it was him asking". Like, yah it's important that they get where they need to go, but they need to make this up to Essek. Especially Caleb
You can tell they really want to though. It's not really their fault everything is falling to pieces at the same time and it's a lot of heavy shit that needs to be taken care of asap. I look forward to seeing how they make it up to him, assuming they live long enough
I don’t think Caleb was taking advantage of it, more that Caleb understands the debt they’re in to him and he doesn’t want Essek to blame the entire group
Honestly, given Caleb's past and the torture and training that Trent put him through... I'd be very, very surprised if "how to use flirtation and/or sex to achieve your objective" wasn't on the lesson plan. Which makes my heart hurt for Caleb. I think Caleb was being deliberately and calculatedly flirtatious with Essek to smooth things over... and I'm honestly not sure if Caleb allows himself any genuine romantic emotions for ANYONE. Except his, of course, his memories of Astrid and perhaps Eodwulf. (I say "memories of" because undoubtedly both of them, if they're even still alive, are very different people from the teenagers he remembers.)
@@CBeach-vy2xc Exactly. That's entirely what I mean by Caleb specifically taking advantage of Essek. The rest of the MN like his company, he simply politely excuses himself because he has a 18 hour job. They are willing to repay favors. It's the flirting that bothers me, because it undercuts Essek's decision on a personal level and Caleb clearly feels bad doing it.
@@Solidude4 You know, there are people that don't have the time to watch a 4 hour and 19 minutes long video all in one go. But still people want to read the comments after having watched a bit. If I didn't like the players, I would not have watched nearly the number of episodes that I have, but that unconscionable & unwise abuse of Essik was appalling. Worse yet, it came across not as stressed and exhausted player characters, but of douchey LA-types. In addition to that, they have hit a patch where they couldn't plan their way of out a paper bag. Nott wanting to skin a Yeti and make a Yeti costume was awful. I've never been hunting either Sam, and I know next to nothing about gutting an animal carcass or basic taxidermy, but that would take weeks. Thankfully, there is no "taxidermy spell". Then Nott splatters the poor guard because Sam finds is Tarantino-esque or whatever. Yeah, I lived though the 1990s too Sam, and I don't have much nostalgia for those years. But yes, it fit the time to be sure. Caduceus suggests they avoid a fight but the others are bored and blurring into it because they know Matt won't TPK. How arrogant! Then they ignore Caleb's effort to get a short rest and recover some spell. Well, back to watching this good players who have gone off their track screw up. But it's got that lightly scripted reality TV feel and that is icky.

"why you listen when your casters say they need a rest"
Ironically Travis was the one pushing for a long rest, whereas he usually wants only a short rest and to push forward (warlock problems)....

But then...

Agreed. Like I miss Ashley obviously but this seems more fitting. And I feel like I’ve grown more attached to Yasha as well during these episodes.

I have this vivid memory of Fjord taking a stick from a lightning struck tree, while I think, "Travis wants to cast witch bolt." Then the very next episode, he cast the spell. So, where is the truth Travis! Do you understand components or not!?

Talking about the mechanics of the game implies they know them. Which so far... only seems to apply to Matt
Another reason why you should only watch Critical Role instead of finding a group of "players" who suck the magic out of the game.
@@PapaBear_Gaming except multiple times in this episode alone Matt got the mechanics wrong, literally everyone forgets things and is still learning
I genuinely couldn't play at the same table as Marisha. Laura is a barely restrained table tyrant too, the micro tantrums are spectacular to observe.
@@K.E.L-117 interesting that you (and many other crit roll "fans") can't stand the women players and need to be vocal about it.
My poor caster self cringes every time they do but god it’s so masochistically entertaining to watch
Savannah Shane I’m just wondering why he didn’t have the balgura follow behind them trying to sound like the laughing hands footfalls to give them a bit of a boon
If Matt warns you to get you healing potions sorted you know shit is bout to go down
Matt definitely misread the Jeremy Crawford tweet on Summon Greater Demon. I mean, they haven’t been running the spell correctly the whole time anyway, but he CAN use an arcane focus to cast the spell, but he needs the blood to create the circle that protects him/the party from the demon when/if he loses control of it.
Yup. He definitely misread that one.
Yuuuuuppp.... oh well. 🤷♀️
I think it's just the caster that the circle protects, not the whole party unfortunately. :( But yeah he did misread it, I'm glad they ended up getting to use the spell anyway!
Nathan Bally Sorry dude, you’re simply wrong. I’ve read the rules carefully, I read the tweet carefully. You don’t need the blood to cast the spell.
The Inevitable End + Laughing Hand + Yasha + Oban.

"Hi I'm Pumat Swole! I'm about to ruin your day! Mighty Nein! I'll handle the grunts!"
I love how the plan falls apart before they even start.
"You're casting fly at 5th level?"
Yup.
LET YOUR SPELLCASTERS SLEEP Y'ALL!
The whole battle I’m like, “HIT YASHA ON THE NECK WITH THE DISPEL STONE!”
“Tell him to...“
“It's not a control spell“
“Oh, okay... maybe tell him to...“
“It's not a control spell.“
“Ooooh... we could make him...“
Jeez, guys... :D
NikReturn They could tell him what to do, it’s a charm spell. It’s just not guaranteed that he’ll do it.
It's not a control spell, but it *does* allow them to try to influence him.
To be fair, he basically Chris prat with the velocirapters stopped the laughing hands charge
And then they told it to go hold the perimeter...
Yet the Hand obeyed and checked the perimeter. Could have worked. Fjord should have heard the party
When Caleb failed to get a short rest is one of the few examples of when a Catnap spell would be handy.
Well I don't think anyone else can cast it and you can't hold concentration while unconcious.

Off course Oban left with Yasha when he got the heart.
(who seems to be out of the picture, probably caused by that same party)
That’s a smart villain making an exit to safety, to play with his new toy and off kill the party on another day.
Matthijs Claessen yeah anyone complaining about that decision doesn’t understand the grand scheme of things. He can find and kill m9 anytime he wants (at least he believes so) right then he had what he came for and there was no logical reason to stay and fight.
This community is becoming strangely critical of free entertainment that is being provided to them via adults playing a board game.

when yasha was looking for the team, both matt and laura forgot that when pass without a trace is active, you literally leave no traces behind
Yesssssss this was immediately what I thought of when Yasha was pointing out where they went
Felt like one in all whole series of gotcha moments from Matt
Pretty sure Essek understands the score.
Aw. We couldn't save Yasha or stop Oban's plans. Killed my whole family.

Keaton Fierro Its the nature of comments to spoil. Just don’t read them until you finish
@@keatonfierro6096 if you encounter spoilers because you read the comments before finishing the episode, that's 100% on you.
@@Solidude4 You know, there are people that don't have the time to watch a 4 hour and 19 minutes long video all in one go. But still people want to read the comments after having watched a bit.
You obviously can't read comments without them revolving around what happened during the episode but they could AT LEAST put a spoiler warning for what happens at the very end of the episode. It's *really* not too much to ask for.
I audibly yelled “no!” when Fjord decided to be sassy and rude to Essik when they asked to be bamfed AGAIN. You guys can’t just be so hella rude, come on ;-;
Like Beu said “That feels rude.” It’s cause it is. And someone tell Essik thank you please ;-;
I'm very late to the party but I know how you feel :( Felt sorry for Zeenoth, too
@@generalhardhead Being rude is kind of their MO, except for Caleb and Caduceus.
I'm kind of proud of Beu for almost not being rude, tho! She tried lol
@@generalhardhead i feel super bad for Zenoth. That chaos was hilarious but I still have no clue what their mo was. Sure, they now have a bunch of circles all over the place, but they're also going to get shot or arrested if they ever use them. 😅
Matt specifically gave them a tool, the awesome whip to snatch items from others. Yet they didn't use that.
"I don't want to experiment with that yet" -Caduceus, upon the reattachment of Jesters Decapitation
