The one thing Matt drives home this episode: “This is an ancient white dragon! You will die if you engage to kill!! You have been warned!!! Repeatedly!!!!!”
@@BergerMeister that does make sense, I just can't think about why a dragon would change places or try to find one for 500 years. Random thought though, if he/she is ancient, he/she would have probably lived during the calamity.

Mauricio Schug and cut off his hand. And killed his bodyguards. And Fjord literally turned himself into an illusion of him while intimidating him. That dude is scarred for life. Literally and figuratively.
Matt had at least 5 NPCs explain that they don't have to, and probably shouldn't, try to kill the dragon in order to complete their goals. Which means they obviously will all die trying to kill the dragon.
@@SamGaleFilms the day they set up the trap for the ogre magi on the road: Matt: *POP a Molly i'm sweatin'* *Molly dies* >party tries to do some stupid shit again Matt: Imma fuckin' do it again
Well, based on what they know at this point it's most likely just an adult dragon. 250 yearsish. Ancient at 800. It should be roughly the same CR as the remorhaz encounter.
@@Ascaron1337 A CR 11 Remorhaz is more dangerous than most adult dragons. Heated Body is an absolutely brutal feature, as well as the ability to burrow and travel completely unseen, allowing them to make attacks without being spotted and therefore avoid reaction effects like Cutting Words or Sentinel at Death’s Door that require previous sight of the attacking creature. They're fucking deadly, mate. Not to mention immunity to fire and cold damage is far more than a dragon's immunity to a single damage type. A remorhaz is immune to everything a white dragon is, as well as immune to fire damage, and deals damage every time you hit it. Also, auto-restraining on a hit (which is a +11 and rather high for its CR) is fucking brutal because the grappled creature can't move, has disadvantage on attack rolls, and the remorhaz has advantage to swallow the creature with its next turn. TL;DR - it's considerably easier to TPK a level 9 party with a remorhaz than a dragon. CR don't mean shit.
"Hello! My name is Simon. I heard you had some teacups you need me to breathe on?" lol. Travis for sure has the best reactions. But watching Taliesin nerd out last episode when Fjord pulled off what Percy couldn't was so great to watch! It was like he was watching his best friend beat his favorite game or something haha.
@@samhillbrook4606 In D&D, yes, but IRL, intelligence is made up of more than memory. Mostly it's about how easily you can understand new information, but it has many components and there isn't one agreed upon definition, but many different theories and tests.
@@omolisa3783 I think the ability to retain information is one of the best definition and is at least the definition of another "synonym." Trying to describe the brain with a single word isn't really possible unless it has a book long definition. So using the word intelligent to describe ones ability to retain information is far more useful than say "It's Complicated." Even though that's true, I personally believe we should separate Intelligent, Smart, Wise, and any other similar word to describe a different part of intellect. However, someone has already probably thought of this exact thing so I'm probably behind the ball anyway.

I'm just watching this now for the first time since it aired...screaming "Mercerrrrrr!" at the sky. He likes to play the long game. Like the guy that Grog gave that card to in C1...
I’ve started with campaign 3 and bingeing c2 and I immediately grew dangerously curious when they said they were studying the moon and immediately know they’re part of the grim verity…
Ever since Mollymauk and the Iron Shepards, Mercer really forgoes the whole subtle hints of “don’t fight it” and just outright hammers it into their heads.
Since all of Mercer's encounters, regardless of creature makeup generally devolve into slogfest combat unless they've been a previously established creature in the other campaign they also soak up anywhere from 50 to 500 hit points worth of damage before they fall over and die gets a bit monotonous as well as predictable. If the players can't pick up on that by this point, then that's their problem not ours. I just sit back and watch the Carnage unfold. I'm still waiting for the establishment of the Goldfish School of either druidcraft or monk tradition...just saying
@@spedwyrm7427 this is actually untrue. I would argue he does a fairly decent job of balancing encounters vs the action economy of 7-8 player characters. Most of the time the group will have a single combat encounter in weeks of ingame time and it will typically be a hard or very difficult one, bigger boys will be deadly even for 8 PCs and in the sections they enounter multiple times or a large number of foes many will be fairly squishy with a couple probably tanky boys for a medium difficulty enountr mostly meant to waste resources and spread them thin. The overwhelming majority of encounters in crit role are social or puzzling. Sure some thing are easy yo look at and go "okay matt that seems a bit much" but for tge sake of making it interesting for his players most of the time it makes sense. At levels over 10 it becomes especially difficult for this number of players to be challenged even by higher CR crratures in groups. In game almost all combat incounters are over in under a minute.
@@thedarkness125 quickest example that comes to mind atm are his not so subtle playtest/ambiguously story relevant self reviving undead thus far. One had to be put down 8 times before it finally failed its (best guess DC 8 - 10) check to get back up.
@@spedwyrm7427 Sry to say, but you sound like you have little to none idea about the difficulties of a dm managing such a large party. But I give you that: The M9 are not particularly smart / good players. Their decision are often pretty bonkers. Remember the blue dragon in the golden thingy? They could have easily killed it, yet they panicked and used their actions to run around and finally even ran away entirely, nearly losing Jester and the Gnome + missing out on all the loot of the dragon and the lair. Same with Yasha's "betrayel". Although I don't know if that was semiscripted. I don't think so, tho. It was very, very close in there and Matt had to be very careful not to wipe them.
@@Ascaron1337 I've been gaming for over 35 years, dming for 30+. I'm not going to get into a pissing match with an individual over opinion based particulars. My craft is sufficient enough to have not driven players away, nor engendered any ill will in that time span. You do you my friend, it won't effect me doing me.

I agree, Essek probably sees the Nein as his latest favorite (and slightly problematic sometimes) entertainment XD like, when he gets the messages, he's probably letting a lil chuckle inside his head, and like "well, this certainly changes from administration and bureaucracy... let's see what's it going to be, now!"

**Mighty Nein asking Reani if her halo can be dimmed** Reani: "No one can see it if they're dead." Mighty Nein: "No no, let's not do that!" then there's Caleb: "That's true"
i love how liam's expression goes hollow and he starts to scratch at his arms the moment caleb sees the refined residuum i said it in campaign one and i'll say it again, liam's my favorite person to watch for all his little subtle and not-so-subtle reactions to the imaginary world around him. travis also has fantastic reactions, except he tends to direct them most often at matt or the other players. between them (all of them really) i sometimes have to rewind the video a few times just to fully digest a scene because theres so much unspoken stuff going on with each of their characters
Liam’s really good at Caleb’s little fidgets. I choose to believe that Caleb didn’t consciously notice that he was doing that, like when your hands go on autopilot when doing a mundane task. It was a sort of...”phantom pain” response, if that makes sense and I looooove it. And as someone above me said, Tal does this too. The moment when Fjord abandoned his connection to his patron has some of my favorite Talisen faces that I am tempted to turn them into gifs. Sorry for the ramble!
Vaguely knowing what happens in campaign 3, it doesn't feel like Matt *started* planning campaign 3 in that moment, more like he already had a rough idea and was foreshadowing it.
Spoilers for C3, but at 3:30:50, Caleb: "I would like to apologize for my... 'wife' and my domestic squabble earlier." Scribewarden: "How is your rib doing?" @@zimzimph the whole thing with her apparent flawlessness is entirely the point. "DO YOU SHOVE BALLS INTO YOUR STOMACH?!" "... I don't shove anything into anywhere..." truly, this woman is the most innocent person on the planet; all suspicions immediately banished.
36:48 Marisha quietly loses her shit over the fact that Reani is a druid. I LOVE watching her freak out about druid stuff - just like when Liam freaks out about rogue stuff, or when Travis freaks out about barbarian stuff.
I think it was last episode where Liam was walking Sam thru the finer points of rogueing and Sam was walking Liam thru Bigby's (Kittycat's) hand. I was driving and I about wrecked laughing so hard.
“Do you have refined residuum?” Yes “Don’t you dare give me a price, we will do an elaborate stealth mission for you without discussing any sort of deal.”
It's quite funny she didn't even know what she had was refined residuum. The M9 could have totally just ripped her off and bought it for change. If they hadn't told her about it.
I love how the party got super incomfortable unpon hearing the manichean views of Reani on good and evil. They're antiheroes, always flirting with the grey areas. Meeting a person who's in appaearance is as sweet and chaotic as Jester but actually turns out to be some kind of Angel Guided Inquisitor who would execute anyone her angel points as "Evil" is quite chilling.
Prof. Toast This was a tough episode for me to watch. The "stupid" alignments are a pet peeve of mine. I think she is actually lawful evil and her god is a god of murder. That doesn't care who gets murdered as long as it happens.
@@Holy_crayon alignement is a left-over from old school DnD. In 5e it doesn't matter as much as it used to do and should really be taken with a grain of salt. I get the feeling that when Essek said, “You’re crazy! But good luck,” that was a) a key moment in the MN wearing him down into eventual friendship, because not even someone as poised as HIM can resist showing bafflement by these idiots! And b) that was just Matt talking to his dumbass risk taking friends who DO NOT listen to his hints. XD
I miss the Texblade. Since he switched accents, he's more like Bertrand Bell than Fjord. Where's the badass who basically humiliated a foreman in front of his crew? Gone.
I love it too, it almost seems to reflect a sudden insecurity now that he's basically exposed his true self to his comrades. Like as if the accent and him imitating his previous captain was a mask of confident he was able to hide behind and he felt that he could puff his chest a bit in that safe space. Kinda cool to see him come into his own and be so real and authentic with his friends.
I love how this gave us an info on Jester's age too. Since Reani is 33 and Jester wasn't born when she went to the Lavish Château, it means she's under 28.
Well technically tieflings aren’t classified as devils, demons, or fiends. They’re bloodline was cursed to have devilish blood but they’re not classified as devils. And the same goes with aasimars, they’re usually half celestials half... human, elf, dwarf... etc I’d like to see a half tiefling aasimar that’d be cool.

My party had a joke in our last campaign about never dealing with libraries after the rogue and warlock both got arrested in the same day on DIFFERENT TRIPS TO THE SAME LIBRARY.
Mica's character is like... Chaotic Neutral but thinks she's Lawful Good, And I kinda love it. Like she has complete conviction in her beliefs, she always thinks SHE is doing the right thing, her moral code could not be more black and white, and as a result she can justify doing literally anything because SHE says that it's the right thing to do. She's threatening to murder people over minor shit, extorting people, ignoring other people's feelings and just generally being a cataclysmic asshole without her faith in herself wavering even slightly. Honestly I feel like more people should play Chaotic Neutral characters like this as opposed to taking it to mean like "Oh I'm silly and wacky and do whatevs", sometimes Chaotic Neutral is just having NO questions or doubts about what you're doing in the service of a very specific, black and white goal.
The bad guys don't need to use the anchors to destabilize the regions. The Mighty Nein visiting new towns will cause more chaos than Abyssal monsters ever could.
*Nods* as a DM... I can confirm that my players bring more chaos and change to my world than anything I can muster on my own, I eagerly await what the mighty nein wrought >:D
i honestly don't know why Nott has never been part of the Empire Kids duo, she literally grew up in felderwin and is the fantasy equivalent of a suburban mom
@@jelliefishr2336 That's because Caleb and Beau grew up in the Empire's institutions, have extensive knowledge of its history and bonded over how corrupt their homeland is, whereas Nott's story kinda could've happened anywhere, it wasn't tied to politics. So much so that one time when the Empire kids were rolling history checks and Sam asked if Nott could know something about that as well, Matt said "Not really, you lived in the countryside, you weren't interested in politics" or something similar.
several of the NPC's have told the Mighty Nein to not try and kill the dragon, or if things go poorly run. I think this is Matt trying to tell them this is going to be crazy hard to do.
When he referred to it as an "ancient" white dragon I had the strong urge that they weren't going to be able to kill it, all the npc's telling them not to try and kill it just reinforced my assumption.
Follow the howl not necessarily, they may have faith in someone’s abilities or just gloss over it and try to make their original point, but they’ve all made a specific point to say “don’t fight it” that’s a DM trying to make a hint that players aren’t paying attention to.
they way VM would get involved in an instant if they knew about all theses teenagers being abused and tortured, say goodbye to the thousand years old mages... there's a big probability these fuckers trained delilah briarwood at the academy (edit: matt said delilah was part of the assembly and they fire her for messing with necromancy big time)
Delta Cruz what I assumed happened is he had at least a bit of the information on hand in case they went to the Archive, so he was able to improvise the details. At least that’s what I would do, Matt’s way better at this than I am for sure.
"If I can get you this arcana circle for 200 platinum, I'm going to get it for you!" That's the kind of aggressive supportive friendship energy I need in my life
i mean yes probably but also ancient to us and ancient to dragons is two different things ancient to us is just very old ancient to a dragon is an actual classification so it can be hard to tell how its being used
Beau: "Cadeuces, does the Wildmother tell you people are evil and gives you, like, assassination tasks?" Taliesin: "Well.... yeah." Nervous laughter and uncomfortable looks all around. Taliesin: "No." Incredibly relieved laughter from everyone. Taliesin: "Shhhhh...." I watch this show for golden moments like these.
I love this moment because I feel like Cad/Taliesin are often spoken over, but Travis gives Taliesin the biggest, heartiest laugh. That must have felt nice
Caduceus being on a holy mission from the Wildmother and Fjord tagging along now just makes them the Wildemount versions of The Blues Brothers. This needs to be canon. Stat.
In the previous episode, the live show, you can see Liam laughing at the moment Caduceus says "we're on a mission from the Wildmother". Felt like it went a little under the radar, but seemed like a solid Blues Brothers reference.

The mighty nein: almost die to a random centipede monster in the woods
Also the mighty nein: Let's fight an ancient dragon!
@Iron Nurse If you think that was brutal, look up the stats of any ancient dragon. ;)
Well, based on what they know at this point it's most likely just an adult dragon. 250 yearsish. Ancient at 800. It should be roughly the same CR as the remorhaz encounter.
Remoraz's are more deadly than a same cr dragon. 5e dragons are meh overall and boring.
@@TsarofScars yeah I guess this was intentional as there are many beginner dm's throwing a ancient dragon onto a low level party.

@@johnblack7294 On the other hand: guts.
Oh? So your not def?

I never put that together, God the role playing is so deep
Also doesn't initially trust bubbly people.

When Nott asked Reani if she knew this other aasimar I heard in my head: "Do you know Pumat Sol?"
I love how at 2:03:45 when Caleb and Nott get banished from the library everyone immediately goes silent as if this is the worst thing to ever happen lmaoo
Pretty sure being banned from a library is worse than death for Caleb. 😊

Michael Rasmussen that ship was insane. And if I recall you’re on a timer too. Ahhh, I oughta replay that game. Haven’t played in years but that phrase is etched into my memory.
See, I'm here imagining her as Hecate Hardbroom from the modern version of Worst Witch on Netflix.
The looming scowl and the husky voice of impending doom.
I love Esik but man the day he calls in some of that debt its going to be real interesting to see what happens.
Theyll probably just kill him
@@benjaminZ20 they can certainly try!
I think esik will be big bad for campaign 3
7 months later, I know. But protip: if you dont really know how to spell a characters name, I look at the captions. Ex: Nott's son's name is spelled Luc! Why? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
oh I forgot to even say... Essek
Beau's not wrong. They're dead. Fjord cast eldritch blast in the Yuan-ti temple. Jester didn't get any air from the kiss. They all drowned.
Dude. So everything is just them doing what they would do if they were alive, but all of this is just them being tormented by the creature they were trying to stop. Duuude. Cute idea
Fjord also had one of the higher airtime of the party at that moment so...
Intervención so technically it’s fjords dream of everything that could’ve happened?
You just have to admire Liam for how into character he gets. He immediatly starts scratching his arms after inspecting the items at 1:07:20

Reani likes cats and burning things, has a secret identity...like Caleb
Reani likes Whiskey, flowers, and making things...like Nott

It's always impressive how well Liam keeps a straight face during all those moments where other people at the table are freaking out about something related to him.
The Mighty Nein experience: gettin banned from anywhere in less than a day.
Library edition
My party had a joke in our last campaign about never dealing with libraries after the rogue and warlock both got arrested in the same day on DIFFERENT TRIPS TO THE SAME LIBRARY.
Getting banned from a library while playing with LeVar Burton's daughter. How ironic.
This Library ain't welcoming these MODERN LITERATURE

Glad to see that there was a reason and purpose for it instead of them just randomly getting banned
Truer words have never been spoken

@@KingslayerSrb I'll second that. I'd totally buy one.
i honestly don't know why Nott has never been part of the Empire Kids duo, she literally grew up in felderwin and is the fantasy equivalent of a suburban mom
Detective+ Empire kids+ nature bois= trifecta of beautiful chaos
If we look at the last campaign... Yeah, taking on a white dragon with a scary title around this level will probably not go so well.
When he referred to it as an "ancient" white dragon I had the strong urge that they weren't going to be able to kill it, all the npc's telling them not to try and kill it just reinforced my assumption.
And based on their past behavior, they will ignore all warnings and go in guns blazing.
@@Scott-ql2kx yeah Rimefang was an adult not ancient if I remember
Follow the howl not necessarily, they may have faith in someone’s abilities or just gloss over it and try to make their original point, but they’ve all made a specific point to say “don’t fight it” that’s a DM trying to make a hint that players aren’t paying attention to.
Episode summary: Matt telling The Mighty Nein "don't fight the white dragon head-on, PLEASE" over and over again
I love Liam/Caleb’s smile when he is told he can keep the book.

I can't believe nobody is talking about Matt's performance of Archivist Demid Sunlash - that was some of the best improv I've ever seen!
Right?!
And how he again pulled seven random books out of the ether.. 😳
Right? Everyone was transfixed.
Right? That's top tier improv. My eyes have never been opened wider - and I'm Asian.
Delta Cruz what I assumed happened is he had at least a bit of the information on hand in case they went to the Archive, so he was able to improvise the details.
At least that’s what I would do, Matt’s way better at this than I am for sure.
Rob Paul well he’s said he often keeps lists ready for creating npcs and books on the fly
Caduceus "I'm on a mission from god" Clay. lol get this boy some sunglasses and a hat
James Markiewicz If he starts saying “Deus Vult” he’ll be my favourite character in the whole show.

And a pack of cigarettes and half a tank of gas.
The ‘Dueces Inquisition
