  • Over the last seven years, we’ve shared our life journey here on UA-cam. Moving from New Jersey to Maryland and also our vegan journey. Veganism was an exciting time for us. It gave us the opportunity to explore vegetables on a whole new level. But as the years went on, I started to notice some subtle symptoms that I couldn’t fully understand. Today, I tell you why I’m no longer vegan in hopes to inspire you to listen to your body and make changes if you need to instead of feeling indoctrinated into any specific diet.

    I have just quit being a vegan too, fairly recently. I ate quite well however i realised the portion sizes are so difficult to keep up with to ensure the correct calorie intake. I experienced eye problems, my bones began to ache terribly and i felt extremely weak. I was eating qnd cooking home made food all the time but it wasn't good for my body at all. Damn ive wtarted gaining all the healthy weight back and i look good again. I feel like the vegan diet may work for a year or two but once you hit the four or five year mark, the deficiencies will start to hit your body hard. I'm glad ive come to my senses and to be frank we are supposed to eat according to our genetics. My people eat a lot of greens and lentils and beans but they drink a lot or milk and eat lamb and other kinds of meat and they are incredibly healthy and strong. In fact we have incredible teeth ive noticed as South Sudanese. Anyway stay healthy and blessed ❤

      Wow thanks for taking the time to share your story! I agree that it “works” for a while or maybe it’s that our bodies don’t show us symptoms of it not working for a while because it’s adjusting and adapting to the new vegan diet that we give it. We should eat for our body type, that is for sure but everything that our culture consumes is not beneficial for us. It’s always best to eat a food and then sit and see how it makes you feel, truly. The more you do that, the more you will know what is truly for you and what is not. We are such unique individuals and I love that Ayurveda recognizes that in its way of life and food guidelines. So glad to hear you’re feeling better now. What is your daily food intake like now?

      @@mygutculture Thanks for taking the time to read. So I'm trying to slowly allow my body to adjust, so right now I'm still eating dishes from my country which includes a lot of green dishes with meat. We usually have our dishes with what we call asida equivalent to what Nigerians call fufu or kisra( similar to Ethiopian injera but lighter)
      I mainly eat chicken / fish and with a sauce i make, and some rice and I'll usually have steamed vegetables or salad with it. For breakfast I still love my fruits and then I'll have eggs after that. I keep it quite simple.

      @@KushQueen9 you’re welcome my love. Sorry for taking so long to reply. Ahh that all sounds so good. How does eating those more traditional foods make you feel? Do you try to eat lighter for any particular meal or are all meals pretty light or pretty heavy? I’m actually curious to try some of the Jamaican foods I grew up on now just to see how my body takes to it.

    Even vegan I know has gotten sick or died of cancers and organ failure. Maybe it’s just coincidence I don’t know. It just seems odd to me that they’re very sickly looking to me:

    • @mygutculture
      @mygutculture  Рік тому

      Yea, just cause someone is vegan, doesn't mean they're immune to getting sick. Veganism can be approached in so many different ways. It's easy to not eat the right things and the right proportions of foods just like on any other diet. Nutrition and veganism don't go hand in hand. Probably not a coincidence at all.

    • @teainortakoy
      @teainortakoy Рік тому +1

      @@mygutculture exactly, veganism is a moral stance against animal exploitation, its not a promise of never getting ill although health organisations do say it lowers the risk of certain cancers and heart disease etc. I've been vegan 18 years and don't eat super healthy but I only get sick once every few years. A non vegan colleague in another team noticed and asked me why I never get ill as I'd always dodge every bug in the office and just have a couple days sick leave every 5 years or so. On the other hand, some vegans I know do usually catch colds, viruses and flu etc. Sometimes its just your immune system and the luck of the draw!

    I have some questions.. bare with me please..when you went vegan the first time. Were you just eating the regular fruits and vegetables and processed foods? Or were you eating nothing but regular non gmo fruits and vegetables plus the super fruits and vegetables like sour soup, star fruit, passion fruit ect.. plus sea moss, herbal supplements and proteins like hemp seeds and brazlian nuts, fasting and drink natural spring water? I'm curious to know because some people say it works for them and some say it doesn't and I don't know why. They also have a book on eating for your blood type

    • @mygutculture
      @mygutculture  Рік тому +1

      I was eating mostly home cooked meals (with regular organic fruits and veggies but not always organic). And we did have some “vegan fad foods” like black bean burgers, impossible meats and egg substitutes (maybe once a week in the beginning). After the first 2 years, we began strictly organic or pesticide free whole food plant based eaters, yes we had super foods, and tropical fruits when it was available to us on the North East Coast of the US.

    • @mygutculture
      @mygutculture  Рік тому +1

      We also had sea moss and a ton of herbs but it wasn’t until I structured my eating and my herbal supplements that I saw the health. The problem was I was just eating a bunch of random things that were deemed vegan or healthy online. Now I follow an Ayurvedic diet to where I don’t eat processed foods, I don’t eat leftovers, everything is organic or locally (pesticide free grown). I only take herbs if I’m on a specific detox protocol (before I would just randomly take things). And I only drink warm (almost boiled) spring water (not alkaline). Big difference. Some people may benefit from the super foods and alkaline diet but long term it’s not sustainable for our bodies. We need structure, we should eat fruits past three pm and we should eat topical fruits unless we live in tropical places. Also, it’s better to lightly cook certain fruits than to eat it raw but that’s a whole other topic.

    Right on! We gotta do what works for us and keep adjusting...vegan sources have almost no cholesterol which is a precursor for so many hormones (for men and women)...I'm not sure exactly how to reliably replace the cholesterol using pure vegan sources. I tried doing a vegetarian diet for a month in college and it didn't work well for me. I think vegetarian [eggs + dairy] may be possible long term, if you are replacing those non-vegan things needed by your body, and are willing to spend a lot on those replacements.

      I just don’t feel my best eating red meat or meats in general. Also, the transit time of meat is pretty long compared to grains, legumes, plants and fruits. I rather not increase that transit time especially with my digestive system being on the way to a full recovery still.

Obviously you can do what you want I was just curious because I was whole food plant-based for a long time and my health was bad when I switch to meet based the best I ever felt and plus your senses tell you that anyway whole food plants taste terrible compared to say refined white rice and such. Agree that the right type of fat is the key to hydration, rather than flushing out important electrolytes with ridiculous amounts of water! I almost fell into the blades of the blender that is veganism (after 9mo of very low animal/plant ratio) but basic research made me reconsider. Since Mar-2019, my diet is similar to that found within the Mediterranean Blue Zones. Beef fat*, beef*, chicken, eggs, oily fish & cheese are all included, although beef & chicken consumption is slowly decreasing. Cheese omelettes or smoked mackerel fillets + scrambled eggs are favourites.😃
    All the best to you. Have a great 2023!👍🙏

I haven't had mackerel in years! Used to love it though. Do you get it fresh from a sustainable source? Thanks for the kind wishes! Wishing you an abundant, productive and graceful New Year! @@mygutculture Thank you!😀Most of my animal products come from the Waitrose (UK) grocery chain. Its policies on sustainability & standards, within animal agriculture, appear to be significantly higher than those of other chains, tho' market pressures must always lead to compromise. Occasionally, I "go mad" & buy local fillet steak & cod loin from a local supplier but it's eye-wateringly expensive!😭
