One of the most controversial Mr. Olympia competitions in history was in 1980. It was the year that Arnold Schwarzenegger decided to compete last minute after stepping away from the sport. He ended up winning first place and his 7th Olympia trophy. Many fans believed that it was an unearned win fueled by his rising Hollywood fame. It was an infamous moment in pro bodybuilding history. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Samir Bannout shares his first hand account both back stage and on stage of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Olympia 1980 win.

The fact is, Arnold was The I.F.B.B back in 1980 ! What was even more controversial was the 1981 Mr Olympia when Franco somehow beat Tom Platz. Crazy !
Agreed. Franco's win was a robbery as well. That was horrible to say the least. The IFBB knew they needed Arnold as did the Weiders. He made the sport whether you like the guy or not. Based on everything I've watched and listened to, Mike Mentzer was nuts. Not questioning his physique, but he was nuts.
@@robertarnold7187 a brilliant, articulate "nut".
That was just as crazy as mike metzer losing to arnold
@justdynee From the considerable amount of articles and videos I have seen, the consensus is pretty much divided right down the middle 50/50 that it should have been either Tom or Danny. Dickerson might have looked better than Franco, but he wasnt in the running for 1st place.
Arnold caught a bad rap. Yes it is true he won in years when everyone else got disqualified , but if you look at who was going against him, he was going to win anyway during those disqualified years. The only people who had a chance of beating a Prime Arnold were already retired or past their primes by the late seventies. Bill Pearl (retired) Sergio Oliva (Past his Prime by the mid seventies and Arnold had already surpassed him by 1972)and Frank Zane (Past his prime and never the same after a serious auto accident). Those were the only guys during that time with any real chance at beating Arnold.
Love Samir one of the greatest physiques of alltime. And a real human being.
One of my Favorites
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Who also agreed that Arnold didn't deserve to win
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Let's agree you don't even work out. You're confined to your wheelchair
Samir is one of the nicest men around. He was friends with my friend Albert. He stayed with him full weekends. I went to his welcome back party after he won his Mr Olympia. The Barbarian Brothers (rip David) were there and so many other bodybuilding professionals. Samir is one awesome dude. A walking encyclopedia on life, bodybuilding, etc.. And Mike Mentzer(rip) was a very good man too. To be fair, bodybuilders from that era were very approachable nice guys. You could strike great conversations with them on just about any subject. World Gym was full of them. I'll never forget those days at world gym and what I achieved there because of the people that I was sorrounded with.
Vlad should let Samir just finish his stories...they are so interesting and he is a national treasure.
I know right?! Shut the hell up Vlad😂
This dude is notorious for cutting bodybuilders off while they're "trying" to tell detailed stories. It's much better when a former bodybuilding pro like Dave Palumbo does the interview.
Great honest interview. I saw Samir at World gym in 1991 after I moved to L.A. when he walked in to train. He said hi to me with a smile. Very humble and nice man. Filming of Conan started on Jan. 7, 1981 so well after the 1980 Olympia. Arnold was obviously not in his Olympia shape but still big and fairly lean.
Samir is Fantastic, humble and truthful.
Yes A true class act
The 1980 contest was No-legs Arnold and 1981 was No-legs Franco. The 2020 and 2021 contests featured Weird-legs Ramy. Where are you Mike Mentzer, Danny Padilla and Tom Platz?
Samir talks about Arnold holding water from cortisone shot . But ignored the fact Arnold’s legs were the smallest they ever were in his career . No way should he have won .
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines not compared to what they used to
Legs were not that important at that time. Personally I feel that legs, glutes, abs and traps are overdeveloped today.
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines his legs were not fine . Literally looked 17 inches . Super thin and narrow . And when he hit front double they looked painfully thin .
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines
Really ? And you think he won fair and square ? Lol 80 percent of BodBuilders either in the show or in attendance said Arnold would have been lucky to get 4th or 5th . His upper body to lower body difference was huge . Look up his front double from 1980 . It’s awful . And didn’t cbs or nbc cancel the broadcast cause even they could see the contest was bs? The crowd was going nuts booing Arnold off the stage . Come on man . Enough . Arnold didn’t win in 1980 . He should have Been 5th or 6th
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines
Lmao Samir who is featured in this debate was literally standing backstage with Arnold. Samir was a massive Arnold fan . He was in awe of Arnold’s presence. But he said Arnold was in no way shape or Form the winner . Other competitors were laughing when Arnold stripped down he was so out of his league . Enough already . Arnold didn’t deserve to win in 1980. Nothing to do with mentzer being the favorite lol are you kidding ? Mentzer should have been third maybe . CBS dropped the broadcast because even they couldn’t believe how badly this was fixed . John Hanson said this on Rx muscle recently . And wow what a shock . The new Arnold documentary on Netflix conveniently left the 1980 Olympia out , lmao like it never happened . But that’s a move someone who’s confident in their win would do right ?
This is an awesome interview! Samir is a fantastic guy! Love'em! Thanx for all! I'd like to see more of it! :)))
His charisma and aura and 80 percent shape made him win. Chris Dickerson was a worse Mr. Olympia win in 1982. And no film of the 1981 Mr. Olympia of Franco Columbu debacle. The cortisone shot for his shoulder messed up his condition and made him puffy. He posed all night and was drawn down but pulled it off. Thanks for your input Samir "Mr Olympia" 1983.
Bannout was a legend. The Arnold 80 Olympia prep is well known that he was quietly preparing (so much that I'm surprised to hear Generation Iron was not aware of it), while telling everyone it was for a film role to disarm them. Conan the Barbarian was not filming yet. His very close associates (Joe Gold, Franco Columbo, etc) were aware. Not many others. Tom Platz also gives a very detailed account of the almost fight backstage with Arnold and Mentzer for an interview with the late Ric Drasin and backs up the comment on Mentzer's belly that proved the final straw. This was not uncommon for Arnold to needle and provoke his chief competition and Mentzer was considered a favorite to win it all. Psychological warfare as Arnold would say. With bodybuilding also a subjective competition Arnold was also well-established friends with all of the judges.
Yes full bias mentzer deserved
This is a very good interview, the1980 Olympia was when I started to gain interest in bodybuilding , Samir is acting very professional in this, good job
Samir had an incredible back. one of the best backs in his day if not the best before Lee Haney.

Let’s not forget Arnold was also a promoter for the 1980 Olympia and also the other big controversial one in 1981 when his best mate Franco Won 🧐 makes you wonder🤔
I believe the 1980 Olympia was set up by Joe Weider for arnold to win. No way arnold should have won. Politics with Joe and arnold in the mix.
I understand they both were booed!
My favorite interviewet!! Has so much care and charisma!! You can tell he loves doing what he does 😬
Great Interview!! - Thank you Mr Bannout! - You can always count on Samir on the truth.
Amazing interview! Thank you
Samir’s a guy that I’d wanna hang out with 😎👍
What an amazing channel, discovered it today, and can't get enough of it!
Arnold knew way before 2 days.... He said and I quote " I wanted to see if I could do in 8 weeks what most people spend a year or two to do.."
Samir was a beast during the Golden Age of bodybuilding, and the 1983 Mr. Olympia. Look at pictures of him in the early to mid 1980s - Holy cow, he looked amazing!
VLAD- Arnold's OTHER bad comment was to BOYER COE whom Arnold told "Talk like a Man". Boyer Coe would be a GREAT interview for you, he would probably love to have an interview!!

@@stevenroberts5741 well how was he to know how to ever talk like a man if he never heard a man talk..so he asked Coe! What's the problem!!!
Samir’s ‘83 Olympia shape was the first physique to transcend Arnold’s best physique IMO. Shout out to Samir for pushing bodybuilding forward 💪
I'd say bertil Foxx (hope I haven't butchered his name) he was next in evolution, even according to Arnold himself.

This video is wonderfull,thank you.
It was Pre Conan (1982) but it was the most rigged show of all time. 1981 was arguably worse. It’s too bad Mentzer quit bodybuilding all together, but I don’t blame him.
The absolute truth is, Arnold still beat all those guys in '80 with his superior structure. What got people riled up is they don't realize it, but psychologically they weren't comparing Arnold to the competition that night....they were comparing Arnold to the 1974-75 Arnold and he wasn't that anymore. This swayed and messed with people's objective minds when looking at this contest. The fact remains that the 1980 Arnold edged out all the competition that night.......but he lost to the 1975 Arnold....
@@Simon-talks That's literally the opposite of the truth. Arnold lacked leg development in 1980, and had practically zero definition in his lower body. That immediately put him lower than the other competitors. He wouldn't have gotten fifth if it weren't for his blatant cheating on stage, and manipulation from his many friends in the ifbb and the judging panel. 1975 Arnold had nothing to do with his 1980 shape. I'm not sure what you're talking about, but the whole point of a competition is to compare different people. The fact is that Arnold in 1980 came in soft and smooth, and had no place winning, much less getting in the top five.
@@chungowungo769 no, what you said is literally the opposite of the truth and what I said was 100% the truth.
I remember reading an article a few years ago where Franco was looking at Arnold while he was prepping for the 80 Olympia. Franco asked Arnold what he was on because Franco noticed he was retaining water. Asking if he was on gear. Arnold said the usual stuff. Then he said also a cortisone shot. Franco snapped at Arnold for it...
@George Prince he had been using them since the first olympia clown but you need the genetics and he should have lost the 1980 olympia
@George Prince upperbody Yeah was about 80% of his Peak. I don't think his legs were even 75%. Mentzer didn't deserve to win first. His chest was severely lacking compared to the rest of his physique. Typically his pectoral development is pretty solid which we've seen in other pictures but here It lacked density depth and fullness. But even at its peak his chest wasn't anywhere near Arnold's. Arnold deserved third
@George Prince maybe. But based on the workout routine I saw him do typically, he did more than one set for body part. His fellow contemporaries said he would do three sets per exercise typically. But based on the pictures I saw him do like dumbbell flyes, incline Nautilus chest press, flat pec Deck exercises. Based on what I saw and no meat and potato exercises like dumbbell chest presses, dips or cable crosses
Cocaine
That article first appeared in 1981. Years later Weider reprinted it, omitting the casual admission of steroid use.
I find it funny that people say, Mike Mentzer should’ve just blocked that out and kept on going, which he could’ve, but I admire Mike so much for standing his ground on a corrupt system. And the fact that he could walk away from something he loves doing because of the corruption just shows what an amazing man he was. Rest in peace Mike.
Samir is a great guy. True class act. Glad he has a Mr Olympia title under his belt
I think Arnold should’ve never competed in the 1980 Olympia. If he knew he was “off”, he should’ve just showed up as a last minute guest poser. It would’ve drove the crowd wild and everyone would’ve said he could’ve won if he took it seriously.
His myth would’ve only grown, instead of being involved in controversy.
It was a judges and competitors meeting not a press conference. Some of the gyms in Sydney knew about Arnold entering before the contest because Paul wanted to sell more tickets. Our gym sold 200 tickets at $35 each. We knew a couple of weeks out that he was entering. I wrote stories about this contest because I took heaps of photos. Peter McCarthy who won many contests missed the judges meeting. I was standing talking to him. He swore and ran off only to be told that since he missed some of the meeting he couldn't judge. I believe he wasn't given the correct time for the meeting. Paul substituted Brendan Ryan who had won a Jr Mr Australia title and who was friends with Arnold. Brendan put Arnold first while Peter didn't. That would have made a difference. Of course Arnold knew all the judges and some of them paid him for posing displays. Paul lived with Arnold in late 1968. Arnold owes Paul heaps for things that happened in the past.,
Excellant analogy, Sir! Thank you so much for your contribution to bodybuilding
Samir tapped me on the back at the British Grand Prix and said sorry I thought you were Dorian……what a memory in front of my friends
Arnold buddy Franco Columbu winning was just as big of a joke. It was so rigged.
Lol it’s just a beauty contest for steroid abusers. Don’t put too much on it
That is where your wrong if you know anything about bodybuilding it really is an artform. Ur lit. Brain prob can't comprehend that

Arnold is numero uno
Every golden age guy is cursed to spend the rest of their lives answering Arnold questions.
I think 1981 was worse.
I agree! 80 was controversial but could be justified whereas 81 was a straight robbery
Franco in 81 was the worst Mr O of all time. His legs wouldn't even have placed in a local level show.
Platz or Padilla. Toss a coin.
Damn, if my friend or training partner said, "I wish that jumbo jet exploded overhead." I'd be like, "Bro, you need to see a Psychiatrist. You got serious anger issues and need help."
Arnold wasn’t trying to change the rule into two weight classes. Arnold wanted to keep the existing two classes (under-200lbs & over-200lbs) in place.
The story I was told since I was at World's then was that Arnold was getting in shape to eventually film Conan BUT was going to guest pose at that year's Olympia. He was long time friends with the Promoter that year.
Samir in his Olympia win was flawless.
I watched So many Interviews John Hansen did with Old School bodybuilders who Competed in that 80 Olympia & Most of them Said Arnold shouldn't have Won that Contest. Some of them even said Arnold Looked Worst in Real life than in Pictures.
He never bested his nemesis Sergio Oliva........ not a true warrior if you can't face your worst foes..........
You’re one of the very best Samir!
Even in 1975 Arnold was down in size, but he was proportion, conditioned, & had the balance. He was streamlined cutting down to 225 lbs.
1980 Mr. Olympia building up his body to 225-230 lbs in the gym. On contest day he was 217 lbs. Obliviously he was down in size department: legs, chest, back, & deltoids which exposed his narrow shoulders. He had his trademark arms & calves which overpowered other body parts, which threw off his balance & symmetry. If Frank Zane came in looking like he did in 1977-1979 he would have defeated Arnold, but unfortunately suffered a accident prior to the contest. It was a perfect storm for Arnold to win because everyone was off. Arnold still had his signature poses & had enough to pull it off.
Great to see the great Samir exceptional bodybuilder
THERES AN OLD VIDEO WITH ARNOLD TALKING ABOUT GETTING READY FOR THE SHOW 12 WEEKS OUT - he might have announced he was entering later

We get you read articles about the 1980 Olympia, but Samir was actually there. Let him tell you what he saw without interrupting him!
It was down to his marketability. His fairytale comeback win was orchestrated to boost product sales and help in propelling the sport to the masses. Impressive but NOT the best physique on the night. Mike was wrong to turn his back on the sport, he let himself down.
No. He would have let himself down to continue putting himself into competitive bodybuilding knowing it's not genuine competition.
When he said he would like to see things done properly, why no follow up on that?
Samir is the man!!
Arnold in 1974 would have destroyed anyone on that stage but he was slightly off that day .Still the biggest on stage but not the hardest . Mentzer was very complete ! 5th place was a robbery for Mentzer!
ARNOLD COULD HAVE SHOWN UP IN A WHEELCHAIR - HE WAS NEVER GOING TO LOSE THAT OLYMPIA - JOE'S GOLDEN BOY - the others should have gone home as soon as Arnold showed up
Come on Sameer. Mentzer had the best body there. Let go of your own ego. And mentzer had more iq than the combined people on that stage.

He didn't attract them. His cookie duster did all the heavy work.
And also Arnold got his Mr. Olympia title in ‘71 by default. He was the only one who competed
I didn’t know that one that’s pretty embarrassing you’re the only one no competition what the fuck is that.
Arnold in 71 was probably at his best... some say 74 but 71 he looked sick... so if they were all on stage all of the best guys he would wipe the floor with them...he would absolutely destroy them...so who cares... and about that 1980 I have heard lots of different opinions

I believe the camaraderie was better because most of the competitors were local to golds. Now everyone is spread out.
Yes, perhaps one of the most political Sandow wins, ever. '75 is up there, as well as Franco's '76 and '81 wins. (Doing a revisionist history exercise on Mr. Olympia competitions over the years is a lot of fun; I know _my_ 'How It Should Have Ended' victories from '75 -> '83 list looks.)
Samir is very intelligent! Great 83 Olympia!
Class act 👍👍👍
Who do you think should have won.?
Mike lost his mom I think weeks before the show and Boyer Coe also was very good at that show and also the other guys. For me Arnold can be placed between 4 to 6th but just 'cause it's Arnold.
You have to knock out the champion emeritus and nobody did
Regarding the 1980 Olympia, Mike Mentzer said in an interivew that was told by Ben Weider, Joe Weider's brother, that Arnold was on cocaine the day of the contest. Arnold was a loud mouth sometimes. Hes human like everyone else.
I wonder who was the first who had a beard: Samir Bannout or Mike (Ray?) Mentzer? They were the only one who had a beard.
Love Samir
Can you let your guests speak? Wtf stop cutting them off every 10 seconds.
The way Mentzer tells it, Boyer Coe suggested everyone just listen to Arnold's reasoning about the weight classes and Arnold responded with a nasty comment telling to grow up. That's what wound Mentzer up. I think people give Arnie too much leeway for some of his more chauvinistic and aggressive behaviour. His " jokes" are manipulative and designed to belittle.
It's pretty simple why Arnold won. He won not because he was the best on stage that day, he won because he was Arnold. He was the person who put the sport at the forefront of the mass public. He was already a legend in the sport at that time, and he was undoubtedly favored by the judges. So he was given a lot of leeway in this conteste because of what he meant to the sport. The question for me is why he entered at all. He had to know he wasn't in his best shape, and the timing of it all was very questionable.
To me, he simply didn't look right, he didn't look good. His face appeared very drawn, something was off. So, he was basically given the victory not so much for the shape he was in that night, but for everything he had done prior to that contest. Deep down, Arnold probably knew then, and almost certainly knows now that he didn't really deserve the title. But it's history now and that won't change, but the controversy will remain.
If not Arnold, then who should have won? Would have been a most satisfying question to ask Samir.
Exactly, what a missed opportunity
Boyer Coe, Mike Mentzer or Frank Zane should have won the 80 Olympia

Arnolds gonna be Arnold, I met him in 80 at a seminar in my gym., definitely was up to something with super long hair., [conan] probably weighed about 210. he was cocky , arrogant, bored, .. what ever, I couldn't care less.
we remember him for his side chest shots, boyish passion for certain things played out through that huge gap in his teeth and accent , that gave everyone a chuckle. was he at his best that weekend , ? his calves and upper body were great and good enough to win, in my estimation. and ive seen many of these guys onstage including menzter in 77.
yup, he wasn't very political at times when he was younger, many instances to prove that are recorded.

1981...ah yes...tell you what...if it was an upper body only contest Franco was worthy of third place...but...his legs were horrible...bow legged...one leg bigger than the other..zero definition in his legs...yet some blind prejudiced judges overlooked it....bodybuilding isn't a sport it's just opinions....weightlifting is a sport because it's not opinion at all...

He was training for Conan. You'll notice that his calves looked really good this year. Bob Paris and I were circuit training and Arnold asked if he could jump in with us. I think that he was also doing aerobics (since Joe Gold brought in some Tunturi exercise bikes to the gym for the first time). I think that his body was a little more sinewy during this time and perhaps this was due to how he got in shape. Arnold was one of the friendliest body builders I have ever met outside of you Samir.
It's who you know not what you know or look like, so many bodybuilders that should have won, didn't because of BS behind the scenes. El Sobaty in 1998 & Gunter should have won in 2002
