Mr. Hope's finest performances were in The Seven Little Foys and this film. The cinematography and wardrobe were outstanding. Mr. Hope never looked better in a film. The supporting cast were superb, along with an excellent screenplay. I've always enjoyed watching it. Thank you for letting the public watch this delightful classic.
What a great golden oldie. Superb storyline, brilliant script, great music and very good acting. What more could you want. Always thought Bob Hope played only goofy parts but he acted so well. Great entertainment.
Thank you. This film has been criminally underrated. Bob Hope has never been more sympathetic, and I have always loved Vera Miles. And lets not forget New York herself, the most romantic city in the world.
absolutely, my favorite Bob Hope movie and maybe his best performance ever. The scene when he and Vera Miles walt through the streets is just wonderful
Thank you for sharing this very rare Bob Hope classic..I did not know how rare it had become till I tried to find it on the internet!...A rare moment for Mr Hope in a drama with his trademark one liners thrown in... Thank you very much!
Why why has this movie never been marketed advertised or even recommended? This is a masterpiece! BH was a great movie assuming it’s accurate JW was a great mayor!
They used to give old movies all the time when a kid, used to watch, now don't see much of them anymore, unless maybe if you have TCM or some classic channel(shame) so nice to see some put them on youtube. Haven't seen Beau James in a long time, think it was a good part for Bob Hope, serious role, which he did well.
Thanks so much for posting this movie....I saw it many, many, many, years ago on TV...I was in my twenties.... and I have been looking for it for some time now....I can't thank you enough for posting it.....
The great montage showing him campaigning in Little Italy, the German neighborhood, and Harlem-which was then chockful of Republicans followed by the banquet hosted by the nationality Jimmy doesn't know-is terrific.
The ocean liner shown at the end of the movie is the SS Liberte, which was in service when Jimmy Walker sailed off to Europe. But the footage is from much later. There were a few differences about this ship in 1932: (1) It had yellow funnels; (2) it was named the SS Europa, and (3) it was German instead of French. However, it didn't start flying the swastika flag until 1933.
I guess it's a matter of taste. Although phenomenally popular for decades I always found his style a bit forced. It would be unreasonable and unfair if I said that I never enjoyed him, certainly I did. And who couldn't love Lucy ?
@@josephcalderon906 I thought that was Lamour. She was in 3 (4 if you count the big broadcast of 1938) movies with him as his romantic interest. Plus 6/7 road movies
I don't know about film acting technique, but from what i'm watching mr.hope was quite a good actor something he was never often cited for in my opinion especially the speech he gives near the end of this biography of mayor walker.
+Debbie Edwards Thanks, deb!, when i usually hear about this man's limitations as an actor. i always beg to differ. ok, granted he's not comedy's man of a thousand. faces. but he least try to test his acting ability every once in a while. in comic acting range he wasn't danny kaye, jackie gleason)or even contemporary film clowns mike myers, jim carrey or the great eddie. murphy(who's one his favorite comedians late in his life). but he kept punching on for many decades to come. try to look at one of his old NBC variety specials and see for yourself about his comedy range.
I have been told that I look like Kelsey Grammer, maybe I should play Bob Hope at least I can snap to it and tap dance my way up to the marquee with a one liner?!
It is a bit strange, I woke up thinking of this movie. My thoughts was the song of Will you Love in December. Hope made a great Jimmy Walker. I'm not a big Hope fan. But this was definitely a diamond in the rough.
+Sandra VanDeMark Funny! you should comment on bob's portrayal of the late great mayor of the end of the roaring twenties through the great depression.because in its initial theatrical release some movie critics stated he played more of himself than the subject he did his utmost best to portray.
Latvia? Damn, I missed by one country over, I was guessing Lithuania. Btw, if he was gonna go with the Marquis de LaFayette, he could have mentioned Pilsudski and von Steuben. Karl Marx? I don't think so.
I made it in New York, I can make it anywhere! I sold my artwork and had a show in New York. So New York is one of my many homes and one of the Greatest Cities in the Whole Wide World! Love this movie and one of my favorite actors is and always be Bob Hope! Isn't this the way they went after Donald Trump and his Administration? It shows that politics in America are not very Honest and are about some false diety. Shame on us for allowing ourselves to be so crooked and believing in the lies of Politicians who would sell their souls for a nickel seat of awesome power! God have mercy on our souls, we have Biden at the helm and we know what a Democrat,( donkey), that Biden is! Jimmy J Walker has a special place in Heaven and so does Bob Hope!
Great movie, my first time seeing Bob in a dramatic role and im greatly impressed! There was a movie mistake, when the woman is walking him back, there is a scene where there is a tall apartment building with balconies, which didnt exist until tge fifties, ironically the time of this movie. Classic.
Those are funny goofs guys! I remember seeing this movie in the 1960s when I was just a kid and saw a scene that truly stands out as a BIG! error. I tested my memory today, December 7, 2020, the first I've seen this movie in over 50 years, and yes, I remembered it correctly. LQQk at 129:04 during the parade scene, right behind those 3 guys is a...1956 Cadillac! How did that car appear there when this is supposed to take place in 1932? Finally here is the proof that time travel is possible! Nah!
The church has way too much power in politics of America when our Constitution guarantees church and state to be separate and no mixing in politics. Prohibition caused such a lovely time in our history didn't it? Church and state together as with Biden's wonderful family values and laws prohibiting drugs and jailing innocent people who stray from the straight and narrow. Sad and we call ourselves free?
HA! . .never seen this one. Going to enjoy it right now. American Icon. Real American . . Bob Hope.

Thanks for posting #bobhope was awesome, and the story of the mayor of NY, is the icing on top, a must watch
Even trying hard to be serious in this movie,Bob Hope was....and always be a goog comedian....thanks for posting it.
Bob Hope's greatest. Unknown near masterpiece.
Great movie; the best thing Bob Hope ever did - brilliant script, music, acting and movie stars!
Indeed on of his best movies and probably the best performance he ever gave

This and The Seven Little Foys were the best things Hope ever did, and both bios based on real people
+Michael Danello What about the facts of life(1960),with his most frequent leading lady,ms.lucille ball?.

Michael Danello I agree that the 7 little Foys is one of Bob’s greatest performance! I am so excite to watch this film!

Bob Hope was a stellar actor and a great American.

I think that if they filmed Bob Hope's biography,he could be played by Kelsey Grammer.

Near the end of the movie is a parade. In the background, on a side street, is a mid-50s Cadillac!!
i'd just love to see the Cat and the Canary......just once before i die....
It’s out on DVD now, check online. It was worth the wait!
Why this film has never been on home video ?. this and that certain feeling, what's the hold up?.
My guess would be it might have something to do with Mr. Hope's estate.

Is this about the Beau James that GMC dedicated a trim package for their pickup truck to in 1975?
Great movie but i would like too say that Jimmy Durante was a class act.🗽👍
Love that Bob got that political barb in with the Flower Woman. lol pretty sure that was his idea.
This film glossed over Walker's criminal activities!

The Catholic Church once had great power in NYC.It wasn't until 1963 that pro sports teams could start an event before 2 PM on Sunday.
