I Try To Charge A Rivian and a Bolt EV On a Tesla Supercharger With NACS (J3400) to CCS1 Adapters

  • Ford's electric vehicles gained access to the Tesla Supercharger network on February 29th and the next day I tried to use the same adapter (and a few others) to initiate a charging session on a Supercharger with my Rivian R1S and my Chevy Bolt EV.
Neither Chevrolet nor Rivian vehicles are authorized to use the Supercharger network yet - they will be soon, but I thought I might be able to trick the supercharger into thinking I was charging my Ford F-150 Lightning, so I gave it a try - actually a few tries.

Thank you for demonstrating that this doesn't work yet. We are given timelines for the different vehicle manufacturer's models. There must be reasons for this. - Probably to help distribute the technology load that the many thousands of extra vehicles will put on the system so that issues can be resolved with one company before adding a whole bunch more complexity.
Let's play that by the rules and not make this difficult for Tesla, whom is so graciously opening up their network to us all and wants to make it the best experience possible.

Remember Tom covered how charging companies are putting into their agreements that only official adapter supplied by the OEMs should be used or they will not be liable for damages that could happen if the adapter malfunctions.
The Tesla supplied adapter from Ford is rated at 500v at 1000 KW continuous current. Far higher than the 400v/250 KW that the Tesla v3 supercharger delivers today. This means that the adapter is probably made to also use Tesla v4 chargers that may one day be changed to deliver up to 1000 KW. Right now they deliver only 350 KW

@@nickmcconnell1291Your reasoning is correct. The j3400 standard can operate at either 500 or 1000 volts. It does not specify max current, as long as you keep it at a reasonable temperature. To get to 1000kw, you would need something like 1000 Volts x 1000 amps. Tesla has hit 900 amps in a test.

The Ford adapter isn’t going to be delivered anytime soon (or in time for summer road trips)- I reserved mine on Day 1 and the confirmation email said delivery in July. So, if I want to supercharge before then, I’ll have to pick up one of the 3rd-party adapters.

Nice informative demonstrative video. I now know my Bolt won't work with a TESLA Supercharger. I tried this myself with a ccs to 1779 adapter and it didn't work. I had a TESLA owner come up to me and passionately say they weren't compatible. Strange after parking in the mall at a normal spot I found paint scratch marks near my charge port. TESLA drivers are the biggest serial violators of leaving their cars parked connected to a non-TESLA charger long after charging is complete, but passive aggressive about someone attempting to connect to a TESLA supercharger. Some of my best friends are TESLA owners, but there's truth to the reputation of TESLA owners.

As a Tesla M3 and a VW ID.4 owner I can't wait until VW becomes connected to the Tesla Supercharging network but as a Tesla owner I am not looking forward to congested Supercharger sites. I too am from New Jersey and down the road from where Tom was, new Electrify America DC fast charging stations have opened. I was in the area and checked them out. Invariably like all EA chargers in NJ they were all occupied. Last night we were in Hackensack at dual EA and Tesla superchargers and almost all chargers both Tesla and EA were occupied. I noticed a Tesla with Taxi and Limousine plates from New York pulling in to charge. Many ride share drivers are driving EV's now. I charge at home and never have to charge at DC fast chargers. I get the free 3 years of charging from VW but it is not worth it waiting in line to save a few pennies. As Tom has said in previous videos the car manufactures should stop with this free charging. It's clogging up the chargers and causing folks on road trips longer wait times. Fortunately, I know of three Tesla Supercharger stations within a 30 mile radius, one has just opened and two are wrapped awaiting connection. And hopefully soon we will see the infrastructure money kicking in and more fast chargers deployed.

And magic docks are very limited and any EVs with 800 Volt architecture like Hyundai's Ioniq 5 will get much slower charging than at a normal CCS fast charger. This should hopefully not be an issue when Hyundai gets officially moved to Tesla's Supercharger network next year using a CCS adapter like the one Ford is using.

Basically "we're going to do it anyway, so why not join and do it properly?"
      It had the desired effect.
(Only took 10 years for others to see sense)

  • @lanceareadbhar

I assume there has been no change in the timelime for EVs that have the 800 Volt architecture to use adapters to charge using the Supercharger network. It looks like the estimate is still Q1 2025 at the earliest which makes sense given the extra complexity involved charging 800 Volt systems on chargers designed for 400 Volt systems and the issues found when 800 Volt EVs tried to charge using the Magic Dock.

There are several V3s near me that are not available to non-Tesla CCS cars, according to Tesla's Find Us page. Many that are, but a few that aren't. One unavailable V3 is in remote Alamosa, Colorado, several in the urban Denver area. Wonder what the criteria are that Tesla uses to make some V3s unavailable?

      Kyle already covered this.

Tesla technicians updated electronics on 15,000 units.
Probably based on use data (most "other user" activity in the area and Tesla locations with sufficient spare capacity?... Guessing)
      .
      So the criteria is.
      1) Upgraded charger.
      .
      2) Brand authorisation.
      .
      3) Vehicle firmware with Comms protocol.
      .
MAYBE 4) Adapter brand *might* follow? (That would annoy people, but if Tesla wants to cover their back.... May be wise.

There are now 27,000 Superchargers in North America, growing at over 8000/yr. Do the math. That's another 48,000 in 6 years, meaning over 75,000 total. Is either A2Z or Lectron the authorized equipment by the Rivian or GM? If not then technically this violates Tesla’s policies. 🤭It’s to early to tell but if every manufacturer does what Ford/Tesla did then third party adapters may exist but use will all be at liability of the user. So vehicle damage won’t be covered under warranty and Stall damage will be at the users expense because you know everyone has the details of what app and what vehicle started charging last and has an obvious malfunction. I know I could manage the hardware but that looked like too much to ask of my wife. Especially the post charging cable/adapter separation. That made native CCS charging look easy.🤷🏻 I hope you brought your temperature gun for the trip. 11:40

If you can charge at home you should charge at home for a number of reasons,
      1) It's much more convenient. With a home charger you spend zero time waiting for your car to charge. You don't have to go anywhere.
      2) AC charging is better for your battery.
      3) It's much cheaper to charge at home
      4) On cold days you can precondition your car on wall current instead of draining the battery.
Installing a home EVSE is cheap. The Tesla wall connector costs $450, other brands are $400-$600. I paid my electrician $750 to run a 60A 240V line and hook up my Tesla EVSE. The wiring is a once in a lifetime cost. EVSEs should last many years.
