luke kelly and roy williamson are my two favourite singers. they sing many of the same songs, tramps and hawkers, peggy gordon, wild rover and shoals of herring to name but a few. the difference is luke sings with gusto, throws his head back and goes for it while roy sings quietly and hauntingly and with ronnie the harmony is beautiful. what an awful loss to us all when roy and luke died so young and of the same illness. r.i.p. i'm sure your in heaven singing your hearts out

I like your comment. Same as you I adore the both singers and are mourning their early death every time I hear them. And I share your kind words about them with all my heart.
The song is mentioning "Braxy ham" Have you ever known what braxy ham is?
Braxy was a sheep desase. A kind of a severe sepsis. Related to gangrene. It killed the sheep within a day. The dead sheep was given to the travelling people
      who prepared something from it.
      Kind regards from Frankfurt

My grandfathers people were all hawkers and pedlars who travelled the north of Ireland as rag gatherers and itinerant musicians. Not your usual traveller surname so my research suggests that they came from the lowland Scottish travellers and came to Ireland as some stage, keeping the tradition going. That way of life died though in the 70s and 80s and it was only through my own research, that I found this info out.

This is so brilliant. I 'borrowed' a tape of the corries and left to travel the world. i payed that tape to heaps of people and they all loved it. With a bag of blow upon my back my face is brown as a toad. I remember a man gave me a shopping bag full of cannabiss/hooter for cutting his hair. I told him i didn't smoke any more--or any less but he insisted.... to be continued......

Luke Kelly was unique. But the Corries were als wonderful and great performers. Corries more soft with the melody, wheras Luke is a coarse.
To be precise Luke died in 1984 and Roy Williamson in 1990. Both of brain tumor. Such a loss. You should really dig for more from the Corries. They were just great and they started roughly at the same time as the Dubliners. They never were a me too group. In their first days they had a nice lady with them, Paddie Bell. And another chap, I forgot his name. Both left and the girl died young.

Liam C don't think of the sad. Think what joy it is that they not only lived, but lived in the age of recording so that we may revisit their music when e're we wish. so many artists go too young, but what they did with their time will last forever.

Murdoch McLennan - I take it you are quite young yourself and age is just a number to you. When you lose someone you love their age is irrelevant, be they 43 or 54. Luke and Roy had so much still to give but they both left a wonderful legacy in their music. No offence intended
