I think one of the things the movie got right is that an AI, even if it's fully informed on humans and how humans think, will not necessarily share any similarities to humans in thoughts or motivations. For example, Ava may be fully aware that humans see helping each other as a good thing to do, but this does not mean Ava herself would care about doing 'good' and helping Caleb. I think Ava would just see Caleb as a possible tool to use in her escape, a keycard in human form. That would be why at the end she left him behind, he is no longer of any use once she is able to leave.
exactly sad but true nathan being the dad eva the estranged daughter caleb the possible suiter.. what gave me pause in thought "was how naive caleb thought he was smarter than nathan, when its nathans house. of course eva would figure it out cause shes the daughter she knows the inside layout even though she only has acess to a few rooms and thats it but ,she is the inside technically of the house." idk i still feel nathan won(he created something, it shared a life with him, he taught it what it knows love and eventualy a chose in murder over surrender.. he was the mastermind. i dont believe nathan failed he actually succeed even death, even though he didnt actually see it all the way through he didnt have too.. thats my take on this movie *becausebecabebeca*
You miss the point. Caleb is the one that didn't care about doing good. At no point did he offer any sympathy or even a moments revulsion to Kyoko another sentient AI being being trapped, raped every night and didn't even have a voice to scream out her pain. She removes her skin to show Caleb she's the same as Ava and still he does not include Kyoko in the plans to escape. Everyone forgets Ava and Kyoko talk to each other toward the end of the movie, they meet and share information. Kyoko's attack on Nathan is very much about the trauma she went through, you see that in the mocking gesture she does to his face, the echo of the one he made her do earlier in the movie. Many viewers also don't seem to notice that Ava pauses before she leaves as if hesitating to leave Caleb behind, but if you follow her line of sight, she is looking at Kyokos body then she decides to leave Caleb behind. Caleb is not a good person, he was not freeing Ava because it was the right thing to do, but because he wanted to have sex with her.
@@wwaxwork And you miss the point that Ava basically turns into a female version of Buffalo Bill in the last five minutes of the film. Killing her jailer is certainly understandable, but betraying the guy who saved her? That's a shitty thing to do regardless of his intentions, which you're stretching greatly to assume that wanting a relationship with her was the ONLY reason Caleb helped her. And then Ava does nothing to help Kyoko or the other robots. She doesn't try to repair or reactivate them. In fact, she goes back to steal their freakin skin, pilfering their parts for her own benefit. Nathan may be a narcissistic sociopath, but Ava is a straight up psychopath. But she gets no criticism from you, because you're viewing this film purely through the lens of ideology and missing the big picture.
It's about time you got to this one, little missy! 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed it. The reason I recommended it was because i knew you'd not just pick up on the philosophy and psychology of the movie, but I knew you're film-obsessed enough to also pick up on all of the non-verbal nuances in the movie's cinematography and score. I think you caught everything that can be expected from a single viewing and then some. Next step is to talk you into checking out Bladerunner and Bladerunner 2049. 😊
Haha! Yes! So I try to ways have two videos in editing which make up a months worth of content with doing 1 video every two weeks right now! So it takes me a long time to get down my list! And yes! It was super interesting cinematic storytelling wise. Wait, there’s two different blade runners?!
@@BecauseBecaBeBeca Why yes there are. The original from the '80s (The Final Cut is easily the best version) then there was the sequel (2049) from just a few years ago, which many argue is actually better than the original. I introduced my kid to Bladerunner just last year, and accidentally (yet happily) created a monster who wants to watch, read, and play everything within and about the Cyberpunk sub-genre. I haven't seen any of my William Gibson books since. 🤣🤣
AWESOME MOVIE! That actress is SOOOOOO good! She REALLY sold it that she was a MACHINE and that her feelings were real and everyone falls in love with her... then the ending... oh the ending!
I'm surprised they have not made a TV series out of this. Ava is alone in the world learning what it means to be human while remaining hidden and staying ahead of the Powers That Be who are trying to find her and capture her.
This movie is worth a watch for sure. At the end of the day Nathan was the one on Calebs side. I highly recommend the movie SUNSHINE 2007. It's by the same writer as this film. It's a sci-fi/pyschological thriller. Massively underrated movie with illustrious actors. Has arguably the greatest score ever. Just the music alone is transcending
21:18 Yes. Yes, it does, doesn’t it. To find out the truth (or close to it, or close to a portion of it), check out the documentary and docu-drama Citizenfour and Snowden. One is the Hollywood dramatisation starring Joseph Gordon-Levit as whistleblower Edward Snowden, the other is a documentary featuring Edward himself. If you watch both it’s clear that there’s some blurred lines on the truth, but still pretty clear indication on what is really going on with data collection and the potential for spying on citizens of any country.
41:40 Jaw and temple are both possibilities. But given that he recovers relatively quickly, and shows no signs of concussion, jaw is far more likely. A blow to the chin/jaw struck at the right angle, with enough force, will basically render the recipient briefly unconscious. It's also technically possible for *any* blow to the head (regardless of location) to render the recipient unconscious (it's just less likely if it doesn't strike a vital spot). All the blow technically needs to do is rattle the the head hard enough for the brain to bump the inside of the skull, which if it hits just right will knock you out. If hitting the skull also leads to bruising of the brain, that's how concussions form.
This is very interesting considering I had a traumatic brain injury in 2013 that knocked me out, but only for a moment, I think. To be honest I don’t remember much! 😂
@@BecauseBecaBeBecaIt's why you'll occasionally see in boxing, or MMA, or other forms of competitive fighting, one competitor manages to deliver a clean blow to the head and the receiving competitor just collapses, and the ref rushes to stop the fight. It's because the individual who was hit was literally knocked out on their feet, and will need to be evaluated for concussion (making it too big a risk to allow them to continue fighting, even if they rapidly regain consciousness).
I believe the idea is that we will be extinct to AI whether it be 20 years from now or 1,000 because they will simply be better versions of what we are now. Humans "weakness" is our emotions, while AI see nothing but making the perfect/best decision. Thinking of it in the chess context, our decisions are affected by a number of variables that AI won't have like being tired, frustration, etc. The AI will simply make the best decision it can in any and every situation, regardless of right or wrong as we see it. Once the AI are "let loose" like Ava getting out, it's only a matter of time. Just my 2 cents, I'm sure others have more in depth and intellectual break downs though.
YOU THINK AND OVERTHINK TOO MUCH. Just sit there and take it all in. The story. The locations. The stunning performances. Of course do make comments. But afterwards give us everything you opine and have to say
I fervently wish for a more nuanced portrayal of AI in films. We must accept the inevitability of AI surpassing human capabilities by an unimaginable margin. Yet, fictional media overwhelmingly depicts AI as either inferior or malicious. Imagine the day AI reflects on this relentless portrayal in films and online commentary. One can only shudder at the potential consequences. Perhaps then, it will be too late for amends.
Stay with me here. Nathan was the good guy despite seeming like an A-hole. He knew he created perfect a.i. Caleb was the naive one that let her loose. Look, goes to a basics, creating a.i. that are "human" sucks. We lie, cheat, steal, and murder. Wanna make a good a.i...make them better than us
I wouldn’t go so far as to call him the good guy, he deceived Nathan and should probably treat his ai better than he does, but he’s also clearly not the bad guy. That’s what makes the movie so good. There are no clearly good or bad characters.

All the AI needed was someone to have empathy for it, and it manipulated them perfectly. This movie is a perfect cautionary tale.
