    You've said it before. Reaching that sorta Zen level of trading where you do the same no matter what's going on is the perfect trader. I believe its absolutely impossible to trade without emotions.

  • @michaeldimattia9015
    @michaeldimattia9015 4 роки тому +3

    I was totally struggling with increasing position size too fast, and the emotions that come with that. I'd always pick the worst trades to jump into large (usually after a run of small wins). To combat it, I shrunk to a comfortable size, and did a 20 day disciplined schedule. If I traded more than my set size, I had to start over until I was successful with not allowing FOMO and ROMO to affect my plan. That 20 day sample size seems to be the minimum to get a feel for a change in your system. A nice backtest would help too!

    Another great video for weekend study. I learnt: (1) Constant Sizing 3k seems to be supported by historical data to smooth out P&L and still hit target; (2) treat occasional large size 20K as outlier for A-setup ( which is outlier itself already);(3) your emotion after negative P&L is a D-setup like pure gamble

    As always a good video. I have to suggest however that when trading it might not necessarily be trading itself throwing you off. Take a few steps back and make sure you are not missing something. Could be that someone else is on fire and feel the pressure to do better, could be something as simple as a change you unwittingly let pop up in life. But step back look at the entire picture and make sure. I know I get too focused sometimes causes me to neglect other things and got to rally back and get general life back in perspective. Keep up on the video's though you are great Ross!

    I use a spreadsheet that sits on my iPad on my desk to calculate position size. I have to input account size, share price, ATR, swing low, and percent of account to risk per trade (I only trade long). It spits out stop loss, target price per share as a ratio and profit targets as a percentage, total at risk, and risk per share. Its slower than jumping in on intuition but it helps me see relatively quickly whether or not I have a realistic expectation of the trade's outcome. I often visualize the moon but the spreadsheet says "not likely to happen" most of the time.

  • @jeff5069

    The way I like to determine size is by not altering my risk so my size increases as my capital increases. I like to trade futures so since contracts are larger increments I add contracts less often but over the long term I find that it averages out. Stocks are more flexible as you can increase in smaller increments so you can increase more often but the same concept applies.

    Hello Ross! first of all, I enjoy and learn something new from every video you produce - thank you. Every time you speak about risk, you do it by measuring the number of shares in your position, instead of measuring by the dollar amount. If I am considering entering a position for a stock at a price of $20.00, I would do so thinking I want to place the order not exceeding $10,000 (this is my limit per trade). So I would buy 500 shares. However, if the stock is $10.00, I would buy 1,000 shares. This way the size of my order remains the same for either price, $10,000.00/order. Should I not think in terms of order size? Thanks.

    I tried to use risk - position calculator and put 1% risk on my account. The share size I am getting is small, and in order to achieve 3% on my account the stock I am buying has to go at least to 30% up. But a 30% winner stock needs at least 40-45% mover so I can get my 30% and leave the rest on the table.Also, you don't get a 40% mover everyday with a clean setup. So, when I think of this I think it's frustrating, but the most important thing in stock trading is consistency.

  • @theweeve

    Stock price is a big factor for me when determining entry size. The cheaper the stock, the more inexperienced traders will be present. That means I need to be extra cautious. Low float, cheap stocks are usually erratic, and defy what we would normally expect in terms of technical indicators, patterns, trends, etc.. I also suspect HFT kicks into gear when cheaper stocks run, potentially causing even more "technical turbulence". Your comment about there sometimes being something behind the scenes that is hard to detect especially rings true with cheap, low float stocks with catalyst. It's probably the chaos of all the different trader types present.

      @DaytradeWarrior  4 роки тому +1

    Ever consider using smaller share size on higher volatility market conditions and larger share size on lower volatility market conditions? Doing it this way you’ll always keep the risk and potential reward the same. With larger share size on slower days, you won’t need as big move to make good money. And on the flip side, using smaller share size on higher volatile days will prevent huge losses. I trade larger cap stocks so maybe this type of strategy won’t work as well on low float, but just my 2 cents.

    Couple points I noticed, you said Ross that when you’re red maybe you position yourself heavier for a swing up to be back to green on a day/week/month whatever it is. Is the goal consistency? It sounds a little revenge tradyish. I feel like I’ve even heard you say it’s not about getting back to green on a day but about focusing and ending the day with a green trade. Base hits man. Also the “feeling like you could be doing better with size” is, in my opinion, just pure fomo. You’re very successful as a trader but maybe success in some way has you not recognizing the revenge trade aspect to your positioning and the fomo causing you to go heavy
    Edit: Hard to tell in text but that wasn’t bashing at all. I’ve gotten a lot of value from your videos and I can only offer my perspective in return

    ok so i have a question, and please forgive me if this is a stupid question. i am bran new to trading. How does one lose a huge amount of money when you can set a stop out or even a trailing stop out to get you out of a bad trade at a set amount you allow yourself to lose?

    • @DaytradeWarrior
      @DaytradeWarrior  4 роки тому

      Hey! There are a few ways, but generally using a stop or trailing stop is the best way to cap your risk levels. Most traders who lose more lose because they didn't use those stops.

    • @seanjohn6704
      @seanjohn6704 4 роки тому

      @@DaytradeWarrior OK so there would never be an instance when the stop out didnt work? so really if you have multiple platforms one could (based on historical patterns) set purchase orders and stop orders for multiple equities at one time to make money "over and over"? i guess i could test the theory by setting price point alerts and see if it could work? or am i totally wrong?

    If you size big and lose, you may hit max loss real fast and then you’re done for the day. I think small account does require aggressive size and extreme discipline to not trade anything less than A plus. I’ve seen mike sit tight for days in a choppy market where other traders grind down their account. Trade like a sniper. Wait for your target to present itself. If you shoot and miss, cut your loss as quick as you can. Aggressive size demands high winning percentage AND ability to limit losses. Smaller sizes don’t work for small accounts. This is the ultimate challenge Ross.

    • @DaytradeWarrior
      @DaytradeWarrior  4 роки тому

      Right that’s the worst, hitting max loss on the first trade or in the first 15min.

    Perhaps slow markets should be no trade days instead of sizing smaller. Does the strategy require a hot market? Size aggressively, high winning percentage works well in a hot market. We shouldn’t force a trade in a slow market.

    This is about emotions. You cant have emotions in trading. I have $1k account that i started with $250 no margins.
    Here is my strategy as i have critiqued it in the last 6 months to find the right formula and i think i might have found it without involving emotions
    1. Inital 20% of porfolio in a trade.
    (a.) Increase position 30% of porfolio on a dip, 10% on a gain. And exit then take profits.
    2. For the week im lookimg for a 20% gain for the week (so next week im looking at $200 profit)
    3. Having small accounts (swing trades are ideal and looking for the pattern setups to run for the week) $nerv i took 2 exits and entries last week and made $67.12 off of $200 buy in or 20% of my porfolio. 33.56% profit. 6.71% of total porfolio on that ticker alone.

    Bingo! that's it Ross. Top shelf Traders should have a solid idea from back-testing and statistics what are the A-quality setups. For me, whenever I see opening range breakouts (within 15-30mins) that fit all my criteria, I move in with heavy size and with no FEAR. But at the same time, I don't allow myself to move-in reckless - cause I know it only take one Trader to spoil my plans.

    I just worry that if you stick to the same share size for every day you will experience less adrenaline, less intellectual challenge, and trading will be way less fun. I think part of the attraction of trading is in the constant variation and in the split second decision making, so I'm curious whether your current desire to get off the roller coaster will result in you not enjoying the "amusement park" as much. You do sound like you are in pain about the wild swings this month, and I wonder whether you have anything else going on in your life that is making the usual ups and downs more painful or whether you are suddenly experiencing a moment when you losing money is more risky than it used to be? In the end, I think successful traders are drawn to the excitement and the unique challenges as well as to the money. What are your thoughts?

    Ross, you turned $583 into $100k in 45 days. You sized aggressively and had 26 consecutive green days. So you achieved high winning percentage and very small losses. It was a hot market back then so you could take more trades. Today, we’re seeing less market follow through. If the technical setup is there, we should trade it aggressively but if we cant achieve a high win rate due to a slow market, we may need to size down until the market heats up. Size aggressively in a hot market, and smaller sizes in a slow market. Collaborative discussion, Meticulous planning. Iterative thought process will result in the best decisions.
