- With our base of operations in the campground at Ocean Cove in Sonoma County, CA we had two days of pursuing seafood off the Northern California coast.
Saturday November 24th, 2012, we went out on kayaks and hit a couple of promising looking kelp beds. The visibility was fantastic, and we could make out the bottom from the surface with 60 feet of depth. Nathan got his first two abalone ever, and I decided that was enough for dinner that night so opted not to pop any myself. We switched over to fish. The ling I shot here was about 8.5 pounds.
Sunday, with an increase in the swell we decided to kick out on floats from the beach. The Banks Board worked fantastic as a dive platform and game holder www.banksboard.com.
The objective was to pop three abs each (a limit), and head home. That is what we did.
My dive buddy's video can be seen at: • Sonoma freedive spearf...
Nicely done video Andrew, I understand the challenges involved having done several of these myself. I especially enjoyed your shot from the bottom up as your buddy dove for his ab. Your breath hold had to be a lot longer than his... Thanks for sharing! Have fun and dive safe.
It is called a Banks Board and runs around $200. You can find them online on Facebook and there is a link in my video description . It is extremely handy to put game in, keep some extra gear, fly a dive flag, and have a floating platform.
Looks like you guys had some really good conditions! Nice ling Andrew, and Congrats on your first abalone limit Nate! Lets dive soon guys, Colby
I am glad you enjoyed it.
Hmm, he was actually a little heavy. He had to pull 4 pounds off his belt to be more neutral at the deeper depths. We have been doing a lot of shallow diving for bugs down South, and his belt was still set on 5-10ft depths. It might look like we were fighting buoyancy and time since there was a pretty huge swell rolling through, and we were getting pushed around quite a bit. That is difficult to see in the video.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks. I am looking forward to April, more abs and more video to play with.
Thanks. It was a beautiful couple of days on the North Coast.
I was using the dive housing made by Backscatter. I bought it before Gopro released theirs.
The swell was a bit large marge, but at least the water was clear. I definitely want to dive soon. I need to put a few more lobsters in my freezer. Keep in mind next abalone season, I usually plan a trip sometime the second to fourth weekend of the season (opens April 1).
awesome video!!!
The area I was popping abs is A: easy access, so there are not many decent abs due to harvest, and B: too close to Fort Ross, and is within that red tide die off area.
You can take 10 scallops per day, no size limit.
Great video! Some really nice footage here
great video look like you guys are in a hurry. your buddy look like he is under weight. that's great you guys get to and enjoy the end of the season
Yep, it is a Gopro Hero2.
Second gen. I love it and would not change a thing.
Yes, per person and you need a fishing license.
what is that board thing i see in all the videos out here, they look pretty practical! how much are they and where can i get one, im tired of just swimming out there and not having a place to put stuff on.
I edited out the measuring pre pop. I always measure before I remove, after I remove, and at the beach. It is sort of a compulsion, but probably not too fun to watch.
thanks for replying back.. :D
is it per person.. and do you have to have a license to catch these things?!
Did you use the dive-housing with your GoPro?
