I think the best accessories you can add would be lighting for visibility. Yellow running lamps underneath and I added a yellow flashing light above my license plate when I hit the brakes.. as my dad told me, “it’s better to be seen than viewed!”
This was a great video, really enjoyed it. What a find with that bike, you did well with that one! Look forward to your other bike videos! I was fully expecting you to say you would keep that bike, was surprised you sold it. 😂
This was great! I did this a couple years ago with an old BMW from the 70s, allbeit, you were a lot more fortunate with the pretty simple repairs. Great job figuring it all out and a great deal!
Whoever decided that bike was ‘wrecked’ should be fired. Their loss is your gain! Great find and I admire your fortitude in fixing your first bike. That bike happens to be my main ride and I’ve got 76k miles on her. They’re great bikes so consider keeping it. So versatile.
Yes agree. When it is an insurance claim then pannel beaters often quote to have the bike repaired with only new parts from BMW which can be 4 times more expensive than second hand parts and then they still add their labour which is often parts cost x 2 which if you take this example the parts cost R10000 second hand which if new parts were used it would have been closer to R40000 and then labour which may be parts x2 so you add another R40000 so the total repair cost by a reputable pannel beater could be maybe close to R80000 and I paid R62500 plus 15% VAT and auction costs came to R77000 plus the R80000 to fix which is border on the value of the bike which is R149000. But of course the client which was insured obviously asked to wreck this bike and take the cash out and probably took the opportuniyy to buy a new bike. So all and all it makes sence that these deals exist on a daily basis and if you willing to do some work and shop for second hand parts you can find deals like this almost every week in almost any country which is great if you dont mind doing the work youself and taking the risk that there may be more hidden damage which you could not see at auction
Thanks, so good to get feedback, I had a lot of fun making the videos and fixing the bikes, next one i plan to customize a bit to make it a bit more special! Thanks for the comment, you the best!
Great video! Remember that people like to customise their bikes, and you might not be buying what they want… is it better to spend less money and give them a empty canvas? (I don’t know the answer!).
Really enjoyed this video. Bought a flood damaged BMW R1150RT. Years ago. Got it on road less than half retail price total bargain. No water had entered air intake, engine or exhaust. It had been dropped into a small puddle. Insurance wrote it off.
Hi Bart. Thanks she is a bit upset with me because SE2 is taking way too long to finish, but i am getting there, it just takes time to work on the bike after work and after all the family responsibilities, but SE2 is looking seriously nice now, videos comming soon! Thanks for watching
Thanks, but as we all know you have to play your cards gently otherwise the Mmmnn can change into a you never asked me properly, or i thought we still gonna talk this though, or i did not actually say yes yet, but at least i am still good on this one as she also seems to start to like the bikes, which is golden for me at this point in time..my wife is awesome(just in case she reads this, comment about me not talking about het, but other peoples wifes in general, not stereotyping just saying...
What a great video adventure. I really like the humor. Cool guy, who is not afraid of less knowledge! What is the first to do, when you want to fix a bike? Of course, painting the garage. 😂 You made my day!
For accessories, consider a 3D mesh seat cover. They are great at reducing hot spots and spreading your weight out evenly. You already have auxiliary spots. Add some yellow fog covers over them if possible for visibility to cars. Make a good triangle of lights so drivers are able to judge your approach easier. Some hyperlites or Skene LED brake lights are good for making your braking more apparent. Lastly get some really good gear - riding pants w armor, boots w good armor, some good gloves. And training! A nice track day w the GS is great for finding you and the bikes limits.
Thanks, notes taken, hope these things is not too expensive to buy. All these small amounts is adding up, but at least it will probably last a few years. Any specific brands you can recommend?
I'm so happy i watched this video. Your excitement and happiness is contagious. Actually a little sad to see you didnt keep it at the end, but i understand the plan and how you need to finance your own bike via buying cheap bikes and repairing them for selling at a profit. Looking forward to the next video! Long way round - South Africa version soon? :D
Great job there. Worth the effort. I had one for 9 years and did alot of touring. Just a heads up, the rear shocks fails aroung the mid 30'000 miles depending on use. Mr BMW will want to wife and pets to pay for it but hopefully you can get someone to rebuild it. That's what happened to mine but i was in a rush so I traded it in as I was going to do that the following year. As I said, 9 years 36,000 miles and faultless. You wont go wrong by owning it.
good and fun video. but the music is a little bit too much or too loud, or just choose something a little bit calmer next time. getting blasted with base, cuz i have to turn the volume up to hear you through it, is not nice. but still, great job, and keep up the good work brother!
I enjoyed watching your video. I'm trying to fix my motorbike myself, so well done! You gave me a way to keep fixing it and not give it to others. May I ask where you got the manual from?
Great video and great score! Could you please share the link where you bought the service manual/software? I have an 07' R1200GS and having torque specs would be really good !
Thanks for the tip! I did get some budget friendly hand gloves following your recommendation thanks just to get me going. For the long run is there any specific brand you can recommend or will the budget gloves do?
Doesn’t seem like anyone has commented on the blinking orange light yet, so apologies if this is repeat information, but they go off once the bike moves forward. Normal operation. Congrats from a fellow GS owner.
I was very relieved when i saw it was off, perhaps when i finish SE2 or SE3 we can go on a GS breakfast run together just to have a second set of eyes on it and enjoy a lekker outing with the bikes
From someone who crashed and wrecked his bike at 110kmh I can say the following: 1) Invest in an engine guard for your two jugs / cylinders. 2) Helmet is good, get proper biker boots for your ankles, properly armored jacket and pants, and most important: GET GLOVES OVER THOSE NAKED HANDS NOW!!! cool
Hey brother. Nice content. Just subbed. I like your good spirits, it makes for a very entertaining video. Quick request: can you point me to the site where you downloaded the service software? Thanks, mate! Cheers!
Hi! Goeie werk op die GS. As ek mag vra, waar het jy jou 2de handse parte gekoop? Ek is ook besig met 'n GS en sukkel om 2de handse parte plaaslik te kry. Groete, Francois
Dankie Francois. I got most parts from BikePartsOnline.net in Midrand just ask for John and mention I sent you then perhaps he can give you a little discount and also from ACME in Joburg South. Hope one day we can ride together when your bike is complete!
@@HeronOverlandGarage thanks I’ll give them a call. Also curious about the electronic manual you showed. Where do I obtain that? Looking forward to seeing the next bike!

Please let me know what accessories you would recommend me to fit on the next bike?

Cool video and story, I've enjoyed watching it. You were lucky you've only had to bolt on parts here and there though.
Glad you enjoyed it. The second one i am bussy with now is way more difficult to fix, video out soon...thanks for the comment
Quick note: the GSA's fuel tank is made of aluminum, not steel. Great video. Keep it up and you'll make a living out of YT in no time.

Daar is twee in SA. Die een is GoBid.co.za en die ander is Auction Nation
Kyk maar net dat jy een koop wat nie te erg skade het nie.
You definitely need to change the oil and the air filter among with the oil filter
