- Very Little Nightmares is the prequel to the original Little Nightmares game for mobile and tablets. In this creepy pint sized horror game we play the role of a girl who appears to be protagonist Six but is in fact a new character entirely. In this video we analyze and explain the story of Very Little Nightmares as well as the location this new game is set within, The Nest. The Craftsman reminds me of the guy that worked in the boiler room in Spirited Away.
I thought I was the only one who saw that. The Lady also looks like one of the moon goddesses from Kubo and the Two Strings, plain white mask and everything.

You know, whenever anyone talks about Six's backstory, they always forget to mention the comics, because they give some Six backstory as well.
It shows how the Ferryman finds Six walking down the street in the middle of a city and then takes her to The Maw.
So what I think is more likely what happened was that Six took the raincoat and the board and sailed to the mainland, where she found a city and was either found by the Ferryman immediately or she lived in the city for a while before she was picked up.

LN2 is a prequel of LN1, VLN must come before LN2 which contradicts your assumption about six finding the coat in the sea and then hopping aboard the maw. In LN2, six is found without the yellow jacket locked inside a cabin. The main character, Mono, saves her and the 2 set out. Later, Six finds the yellow jacket in a pile of garbage in an alley. And at the end of the game (if you’ve collected all the secret shadow children), Six escapes the tower and a shadow version of herself appears in front of her, pointing at an ad for the Maw. She heads to the Maw (but if you read the comics), she was taken there by boat by a giant fat guy in a trench coat.
There is speculation that The Lady is actually adult Six and the entire series is a paradox.
Would that mean that Six lost her rain coat at some point after VLN then found it again in LN2?
Or was the child from VLN that found the rain coat not Six?
I think the timeline beetween the games is VLN-LN2-LN1 DLC- LN1

Gonna be brutally honest, of all the things I wondered about Six, how she got her coat was never on the list of top 100 questions. Great game, but, such an odd thing to reveal.
More than likely, this was just a fun little way to show life outside the maw. Like a little twist to reveal the main character wasn't actually the main character, but the side character all along. I'm sure they loved that idea for a story but couldn't implement it into LN2.
We'll see more of this lore expanded in Little Nightmares 2 hopefully (if it ever comes out at this point). Hasn't specified if it would be a sequel or another prequel.

I kinda understand why they did it. They wanted to make a lore-canon mobile game, so they couldn't use Six. So they got someone that looks like six because the game depends on brand recognition.

What I suspected, when I saw her it seemed like an adult with a small body rather than a child, at least, she doesn't look like the children I've seen in the games, specially with that face. Maybe a woman with dwarfinism who might also have a mental disability, I suspect this because of her irrational tantrums and childlike behavior, yet has the strength to survive the rock that hits her at the end in a way child wouldn't. Maybe that's why she is so spoiled, her parents might pity her for her disability, but also fear her at the same time.

Just to support your theory, the term ‘pretender’ is often used for a member of a royal household - not directly in-line to the throne - who still has a legitimate claim on it.
The most famous in the U.K. was Bonny Prince Charlie, son of James II, House of Stuart.
‘The Pretender’ shares the same power as The Lady but has a different lineage. A right to rule, but not the support for her to do so; so perhaps she’s as much a prisoner as the Butler and Craftsman? Kept there against her will by The Lady who fears her throne might be usurped if she were released?

Back on the official Little Nightmares website before it got closed down the description for the Lady says a lot of stuff about the Maw; "The Lady casts a hypnotic spell that keeps the engine running. Amidst the chaos of the world outside, the Maw is the only place that makes sense, and now the rumour of an escaped child threatens everything. Nothing can be allowed to interfere. The Guests must eat. The Maw must Survive"
So from reading that it sounds like the Maw's survival relies heavily on the Lady and vise versa. So I imagine that if either one was removed from the equation then the other simply wouldn't last very long.

I actually have a theory on what exactly happened when Raincoat girl hit the water. The pretender managed to kill her. This theory is mostly based around the fact the two were close when they hit the water and raincoat girl had her back to the water. That would make it a lot harder for the said coat to float back up when she died but if her body vanished then it makes sense
not to mention there is no sign of her wearing it after it floats up

Madison gunn she may have either drowned, as she never comes back up, or she survived, and came up after six left. Or third she still survived but the butler found her and saved her, who the hell knows

So we found out in the dlc that the lady knows how to transform kids into gnomes so fo so that the soul gets into a gnomes body and probably ship their actual body to the pretender which makes me question about the loop theory
I speculate that the system here is like a triangular trade in real life, the three locations being the Mainland, the Maw, and the Nest. I can’t be sure about all the details but here’s what I’ve got so far.
The Mainland (least known about location) uses the Hunter and Teacher to capture children and sends them to the Nest, also using the Signal Tower/Thinman to hypnotize the citizens, perhaps making them want to travel to the Maw. Side note: the children in the Teacher’s class are porcelain, the Hunter seems to create trophies of his kills.
The Nest imprisons children and grooms the Pretender for the Lady’s job, using some children for the Pretender’s dolls but most going to the Maw for slaughter.
The Maw cooks Guests and children to feed to more Guests, for maybe allowing the Lady to become more beautiful, but a real purpose is still unknown.

Instead of calling the girl in the yellow raincoat the girl in the yellow raincoat can we call her zero? In the little nightmares 2 digital comics we have 6 protagonists in each story.
Mono (meaning one)
Two/Duo (the boy with a blindfold and feather.)
Three/Tribus (the girl with a bloody nose who tunneled with a spoon in the hospital)
Four/Quattour (the chubby boy with the lolipop)
Five/Quinque (the boy/girl who is wearing a ghost costume.)

yea, when you were pushed by the red scarf kid, the kid immediately ran into the next room. After you followed the kid to the room, you'll see a hat in front of a door and a red scarf hanging at the edge of a hole. Then you'll reach the washing room part, you'll see two little shirts along with a small pants fell down from above and landed on a pile of clothes. And there's a part where you use a red scarf to pass the game. All these clothing belong to the kid, and implied the process of his death.

Theory:if the pretender Disintegrates you when you die then maybe when you fell in the ocean she did get you but the bubbles are there because the pretender dies and that’s why only the rain coat comes up only
Well, the raincoat buttons were undone when the coat floats back up. I find it more likely that the coat came off in a struggle due to this fact. I don’t know why the raincoat girl wouldn’t have been disintegrated though.

I personally don't think the lady has any ties to the Mansion in Very Little Nightmares. I think there is a deeper lore within this game. I think that people have sold their soul, or something to gained immense power which drives them to insanity: the eyes being a representation of the one who gave them the power. When the eyes turn people to stone, it represents how easy the power can be taken while also acting as security for it's followers.
The Lady wanted to be powerful, but her beauty was the price. The pretender wanted to stay a child forever, but at the cost of sucking the life force out of anyone she touches. That's the reason the Craftsman makes her dolls, to keep her company. As for the Butler, his powers were either a side affect of the Pretender's getting her own, or he is so loyal to the family that he wanted powers to keep serving his mistress.
I also think the more people who seek to gain power affects those around them; turning the world into this horrible and negative place. In Little Nightmares 2 we can see all the people huddled around a tv. Perhaps this higher being giving out powers has gained enough power themselves that they can affect the people around them who haven't sold their soul or whatever is needed

Apparently, there is dark magic in the LN Universe that requires some specific things like Children's ashes. There is a secret room with ashes in a jar in the original LN.
The Lady is not the only one who can have these dark powers. That is maybe why there are gnomes in the Nest.
If you Six's face (using mod, analysing the trailer of LN2 and searching in the gamefiles) you can see that she has white cloaths and dark short hair. In the LN Comics, we see that the child that gave Six a piece of bread is a boy.
In the Maw there are drawing and pictures of a little girl with dark hair and a raincoat. Some people thought that Six was the Lady's daughter, but the developers said no. Maybe the little raincoat girl was the daughter, but she was a deception for the Lady and she had to escape (or maybe she was more beautiful than the Lady). Then they thought that Six was her and that is why she was in the Maw, even if she didn't belong there.
I think that the Nest theory could be acurrated. But who knows? Maybe there is not a corelation between the Maw and Nest...

Mostly because of the Nomes, the all seeing eyes along with the ones that turn you to stone, and right before you do the chase scene with the Butler in VLN, you can see a picture of the Hanging Man near the stairs
Now that the second game is out, everything makes a lot more sense.
So what happened in my opinion was that Six sailed to the forest in the beginning of LN2, where she was captured by the Hunter (as you can see in LN2 comics) then she was saved by Mono, and everything in LN2 happened.
After she left the Signal Tower, in the extra ending we can see that she ended up back in the Pale City and found a poster of the Maw.
We also know from the LN comics that the Ferryman found her in the city and took her to the Maw.
So the order of the games are VLN-LN2-LN/DLC

@@dragonz4220 So Six got the raincoat in the second game (I don't know of you've seen or played it) and she didn't get it in VLN, but it's likely that the raincoat got washed up in the pale city (the city where the second game takes place) and someone took it and left it where mono and six found it. Sorry if my comment was hard to understand, hope it's clear now :)

Heres a thought, what if the pretender's is related to the lady? Not a daughter but a niece instead? What if the lady wants the pretender to be her heir but the girls father, the hanged man, didnt alow it and so he was killed leaving her alone with a mother whose always away?

She's probably still a little evil as the 2 people living eith her has signs that she might be forcing them to work for her. The Butler(the floating guy) has his hands in a shackle behind his back, and The Craftsman has his foot twisted and he seems to be styck on his wheelchair. She probably threatened to make them vanish if they don't work for her.

What if the reason the hanged man hung himself is because the lady told him his daughter would be the heir to the maw and he couldn't take it? Maybe the note next to him was giving to him by the lady saying this. He knew he couldn't tell the lady no, he would be killed, so he just thought it was better to kill him self. Maybe she is called the pretender too because right now she is pretending to be a little girl when she is so much more. Just a thought. Love the video by the way.

The hanging man likely didn’t kill himself, the chair is too small and is not kicked over, it may have been a covered up murder.
Or the hanging man was a unimportant character who they decided to kill off so people would speculate things.
The craftsman is stuck in the chair because of his deformed feet.

I remember in the game that there is a box collectable that depicts a dark version of Six, my theory is that the girl became the shadow that we see whenever Six was hungry.
This is very cool theory. I likes it. Btw, my theory about shoe monster or garbage monster is a creature like spider. We Can see his webs before and after the garbage room that wrap a children in it. And there is a drawing in the Maw about Big Spider. And irl, there is a spider named Brazilian wandering spider that live under a shoes, cloth, etc.

Now that you mention it, the girl in the raincoat does look similar to the ponytailed girl we encountered several times through the first game and the DLC. So, I think its definitely her and she's been guiding Six and the run away boy throughout the Maw.
She found the raincoat in 2 (I know it wasn't released) so that means she didn't took that raincoat here but when she was on raft she went on island and hunter found her and when mono saved her and they went to the city than in like middle of the little nightmares 2 she found that raincoat and remembered that this girl had it and decided to wear this raincoat. That's my theory if you like it I would apprecitate if you like my comment.

My theories are that actually his hands are locked down, because he's kinda a slave for the pretender, and he needed to sill doing laundry and home stuff for her, while her mother is away.
That could be an explanation for his telekinetic powers.
Also, I notice that he shares a lot of characteristics with the broadcaster of the LN 2.
Did you notice that the thing that keep his hands locked needs a key to get opened and also Mono has a key with him?... I don't know I might be overthinking, but kinda match up...

So the story timeline is as such:
First verry little nightmares where the first kid looses their raincoat and it eventualy washes up in the city, next six exapes on the raft to eventualy get captured by the hunter and get rescued by Mono in little nightmares 2. She then finds the lost raincoat and betrays Mono, exaping to the maw. Finaly six has her adventure in the maw eating the gnome and defeating the lady in little nightmares 1.

I believe that the pretender was extremely lonely unloved by everyone feeling lonely she started to make dolls until her powers started to form making every child into her toys. This could be why she always wants more always needed more.
I thought The Lady and The Hanged Man were married and had The Pretender, which would explain the powers that The Pretender has. Perhaps this takes place before The Moore and The Lady looked different before she began to work for the Moore, leaving the child alone with the Butler and Craftsman.
That was my theory.

I think this is a pre-prequel because in the little nightmares II trailer we see six getting the raincoat and stranding on a beach. i think six took the raft and tried getting the raincoat back, but there was a storm and she got tipped over letting her strand on the beach and the rest fallows up with the little nightmares II trailer.
I'm going to be disappointed if LN2 turns out to be a prequel and not a sequel. I want to see what happens to SIX AFTER she escapes.

Never played Very Little Nightmares, thinking I should now. Amazing vid, I agreed with most of your theories, this really explains a lot, and ties a many of the games missing story elements together! Hope the game keeps getting more attention as we finally get Little Nightmares 2
I was thinking that the girl was Dark Six, though the braid-girl theory would definitely make sense as well.
Isn’t the hanging man known as the bellman because in the game if you listen to the tv song it says in the song this “mr bellman mr bellman will you hang around me bellman”you can look at it on UA-cam but the song I think clarity’s that the hanging man was the bellman if you want to hear the song and know what I mean go to “the bellman with (itjustjord)”
The bellman is a character that did not physically appear in the game.

What about the wrapped up bundles? They reminded me of when a spider wrapped up its prey to eat. the Other Child held onto one when they fell down, and they landed in a pile of them. We never see any spiders in the house, but the Pretender is able to crawl oddly down the cliff side, like a spider on the wall.
Or it wasn't important to the theory.

Nice cacth! I already made a theory 'bout that. The spider i believe, was a monster that live under the garbage and shoes. In the Maw, there was a drawing about big Spider and irl there is also spider that lives under the shoes, clothes, etc. Called Brazilian wandering spider. Before and after we go to garbage room, there are the wrapped up bundles with children in it. This indicate the things that lives under it was a spider.

I don't thinks so... I mean, the kid in the raincoat in this game died, as we saw right after she fell to the water along with the white-haired (I forgot what she's suppose to called)
If you watched the end credits I think when six left she didn't grab the raincoat yet. It instead happened to wash up where she did in the city, so when she and mono passed by in ln2 she recognized it and grabbed it out of nostalgia probably missing the other kid who died.
Edit: I say this because when the kids run away they usually ignore anything that doesn't pertain directly to survival. The wood board was blocked by some rocks so it wouldn't have floated away but the coat wasn't and she was climbing a long way down. By the time she got down there and got the board situated it was probably gone. Or imagine she chased it trying to get it as it floated away and ended up with the hunter.😢

I'm just incredibly confused why they showed 6 not simply receive her raincoat in VLN's, but again in LN's 2? I don't see the point of her finding it twice?!
I think LN's 2 is the real prequel for LN. And the one hanging himself is the old mono.
VLN is a prequel to LN1, and LN2 is a prequel to VLN, either the six in LN2 isn't the real six from LN1 or the girl in the raincoat who falls in the water during VLN survives and goes to the maw which is the theory that im going with since she has the same hunger in LN1 as she did in the true ending of LN2, also the reason i think the raincoat girl from VLN is the same as six from LN2 is because she has the same trust issues as the LN2 six: she pushes mono away when he frees her from the hunter's basement, she drops him at the end of LN2 and she also locks the other girl out from the shack in VLN. And again, at the end of LN2 she seems to be really hungry which means she is the same girl as the one in LN1
Is anyone going to mention the fact that the child you save from the cage later appears as a doll? You know. The doll you have to drag off the chair to get onto the table? The one the Pretender yells at?
i just noticed that the little doll and girl with blue hair and a pink scarf is the same person so the conclusion is right they're turned into dolls.
She may have seen the children, but was unable to reach them... therefore dressing the dolls as the children she was unable to catch

Well, in the end of the game where the pretender and "child" fell in the ocean leaving the raincoat floating in the process
You see in the trailer of Little nightmares 2 Mono wakes up in some kind of shore(I assumed that Mono was the "child" you play as in VLN because the "child" fell down in the ocean and losing the raincoat floating, Six wearing the raincoat(maybe it's where she found the raincoat after she went after it), and it has something to do with dolls and TV's(theres a section in VLN where there are many dolls sitting and staring at a TV)just like in very little nightmares

At the end of Very Little Nightmares, Six travels from The Nest to The Pale City, NOT The Maw. It's only AFTER escaping The Pale City that Six gets to The Maw.
LITTLE NIGHTMARES 2 SPOILERS :
After playing LN2, hear me out, just a theory:
VLN takes place before LN2. She gets captured and as they are taking her to the hunter’s cabin for who knows what, what if she lost her coat in the process? What if, when Mono saves Six, six was actually just using him to escape because she knew she couldn’t do it alone. She seemed to kind of know the way, and needed help along it. Just a thought. Maybe Mono and Six kind of retracted the steps back to when Six was captured, hence retrieving her coat back. I mean, it was just laying there in the middle of the path. No body, no child. That’s why when everything happened in Little Nightmares 2, she ends up betraying Mono and allowing him to be trapped so she could get away. MAYBE she was pissed at him for her getting caught while he sat there. When they were both running from Thin Man in the house, she hid under a small table, and Mono hid under the bed. When Six got caught, she reached out for Mono, but Mono covered his head instead of reaching out to her. What if that's why she let go? That was her revenge for all of that stuff he put her through. Maybe she thought he was too dangerous for her. Her shadow version that we see in both Little Nightmares 1 & 2, points at the picture of the Maw, and then Six begins getting hungry. Which sets up for the beginning of Little Nightmares 1. Six seemed to kind of be weary of Mono the more the tv incidents happen. You could tell she became frustrated with him. Maybe that’s why she left him, maybe she felt he would slow her down, and she was on a mission. She did hesitate, so you know she felt bad or really considered it, but in the end, she made her choice. I definitely don’t think the Teacher is the Pretender’s mother. I’m pretty sure all the monsters in LN2 are puppets. It clearly shows them being put together. All of the humans are dead or hypnotized. There’s so way, no matter how hypnotized you are, that you could make someone neck’s stretch through pipes and such. Or maybe... just maybe... like how the kids are being stuffed and killed to be little play puppets, what if the humans are being hypnotized to be controlled, also killed, where their hair, skin, and body parts are taken to create life like puppets to do the evil-doers intentions. Maybe the teacher is her mother? Or perhaps... wearing the skin of her mother? We already know the Chefs, and the Janitor are puppets wearing people’s skin. In the second game, you actually see the Janitor’s skin-face up on the wall before you meet the Doctor. Who is literally stitching together puppets and bringing them to life.
Also another thing, I feel this deep meaning from both games about things that are killing us today, in the real world.
I mean, LN1 was about gluttony, and maybe envy? or perhaps just Gluttony.
What if all of this is about the 7 Deadly Sins? I'm probably hella reaching.
But six? (6) Mono? (1)
What if Six is Pride, and Mono is Wrath?
Mono DID grow up to be the thin man, and most theorize he's stuck in a time loop trying to take revenge on Six for her betrayal. He becomes the enemy, the one thing he was fighting against, and proceeded to take it out on us.
It could definitely not even be anything like that. But everything in this game feels like a massive finger towards the problems we face today.
1. Everyone is basically hypnotized to technology nowadays. All about what's on the tv, and it makes such a huge impact on people because of the crap we fill our minds with. The people in authority pick and choose what we see on social media, at least they try. That's why so much negative/false information is on the internet, twisting peoples' minds, pissing people off. When there is so much light just not being shown because it's not as "effective" or some say.
2. Too obsessed with our looks. Too worried of what others could think. Tearing down others to feel better about ourselves.
The people in this game who are still alive act like rabid sheep, one easily influenced or led.
Doesn't that kind of sound like people today?
Like I said, I could be very much wrong, but it's still neat to think about.
So in other words, the LN series is one that goes backwards. VLN is first LN2 is second and LN1 is third. Ok that makes sense when one thinks about it.
@@deemondh7326 I think the reason they did that was because the first game was made with no real story or purpose, and when it blew up and people wanted answers, that’s when they started building off of it. Maybe the second game was to help start a story for us to begin understanding and so on

Anyone else notice how in Little Nightmares 2 there are mysterious sets of clothes draped around the background? They're laid out as if someone had been wearing them at one point. Seeing the Pretender's power to drain one's life force, that gives a bit of context as to why the clothes might be there.

LN2 is mono and 6 venturing deeper into this creepy world while trying to escape....only to find out they are trapped in a world and situation much bigger than originally anticipated.......the maw was TRULY just the beginning.....wow

There are some theories that Six lost her coat in between VLN and LN 2, believing the sequence to be VLN, LN2 and LN1. If she lost her coat between the first two games, maybe she found one again. Another theory I heard was that even tho we saw the raincoat in VLN and Six getting on a raft, we never actually saw her take that raincoat so it’s possible that she didn’t. Maybe she took the one in LN2 because it reminded her of her dead friend.
Let me just say this. THE NOMES ARE the dead children of the maw, when you point your light towards them you can see the shadows of the children in the dark.

@@Djcjx91 Yes, but she would have to loose it and gain another one. She sailed to the main land at the end of Very Little Nightmares, propably lost her raincoat in pail city escaped and got caught. Or maybe Very Little Nightmares isn't canon.
@@projectpitchfork860 actually Six never had the raincoat in very little nightmares, someone else was using it and we see six not on her rain coat. She traveled to the mainland and later meets with mono after meeting mono they later find the raincoat, LN2 events play, then Six travels to the Maw and the game is played out.
