There are thousands of indigenous cultures, each with their own unique history and experience. No single person or story could ever speak for all of them. But for all their differences, there is also a common thread. Most indigenous peoples have been marginalised and persecuted by colonialism, imperialism and the modern governments that evolved out of those systems.
In some of the most developed countries on Earth, indigenous people continue to experience lower rates of health, education, employment and housing, and higher rates of violence and discrimination. This special edition of the Global News Podcast will confront many of those challenges. But most of all, it will shine a spotlight on some of the Indigenous leaders and activists, artists and academics who are working for change, while trying to preserve their culture and coexist equally alongside other communities.
As well as hearing from some our our own indigenous and tribal listeners around the world, we also meet an Amazon tribe defending their land from illegal loggers; a Maori singer who makes pop music in his traditional language; Native American chefs bringing cultural foods to the restaurant scene.

True! The Igorots, Lumad and Mangyans in the Philippines. It's a shame how they are treated like a third class citizens.

Yes, and Belgium, Spanish, Italian, French, Dutch and before that lot, Germans, more French, Romans, Athenians (specifically cleruchies) , Assyrians, Carthaginians... long list. The British invaded North America along with Dutch, Germans and other northern Europeans and in time the English gained more land and won the battle of language and then a whole new style of colonisation began. They call is capitalisation, or Americanisation.

We are all indigenous at one time in our timeline from our ancestors , we just adopted to our civilization depending on what country you live in.

Indigenous people still exist, idiots. The last country to outlaw slavery was Brazil only 134 years ago. Their culture as with many around the world are products of slavery and genocide- the only reason you don’t know about this is because you were raised in the culture of the slave owners who conveniently left that out of your history books. This is a current issue that people are dealing with the effects of right now- did you even listen to this podcast? This indigenous leader is being threatened with death by businessmen and government officials.

Erm... not true. My family, for as far back as my DNA can go, have lived in the same land with no forceful theft and murder. Indigenous means that there has been no transportation there and no theft and murder. Adopting a civilization is an entirely different concept.

No reason for that to be true, native peoples easily reach old age in traditional lifestyles
