This whole album is great. You can hang and smoke with good friends to it. You can sit alone and reminisce to it. You can make love to it. The whole thing.
It's one of the best albums I've ever heard. Very consistent. With that said, I STILL can't listen to the smashing pumpkins, as they were played absolutely. Fucking. Every. Fucking where in the nineties. It's been decades, and I STILL haven't recovered. But haven't listened to this in ages: it's timeless. I did hear a smashing pumpkins song a couple of months back: and ALMOST wanted to play it. But then remembered I had an important root canal at that exact time.
You're lucky if you buy an album and find three really good songs on it. Glory box is just one treasure from an album packed full of gems. Superb stuff indeed.
From all the re-imagined versions of les fleurs, i think this is hands down the best.. And it proves the gifted, don't care what period of time, always contemporary music style of Portishead.
Nah... the source of the Trip-Hop we all love would be Tricky and Massive Attack. Doesn't stop Portishead getting much much respect, such Beth, so Pedestal
This band is just pure bliss. Bristol has a magical way of producing outstanding musicians. Just gotta say Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, Roni Size, Smith and Mighty, Kosheen and new acts coming on the scene like dub steppers Pinch, Appleblim and more alternative artists like AllFlaws
I'm so tired of playing Playing with this bow and arrow Gonna give my heart away Leave it to the other girls to play For I've been a temptress too long Just... Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be a woman I just wanna be a woman From this time, unchained We're all looking at a different picture Through this new frame of mind A thousand flowers could bloom Move over and give us some room Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be a woman I just wanna be a woman [INSTRUMENTAL] So don't you stop being a man Just take a little look from outside when you can Show a little tenderness No matter if you cry Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be a woman It's all I wanna be is all woman For this is the beginning of forever and ever It's time to move over...
Michelle Antoine somebody told me P-head was Shoe gaze genre....I said maybe if you're standing behind a stripper while checking out her 4" platforms (en flagrante, bien sur)
I first heard this song back then when i was 30, but i grew up in the nineties, so i felt peculiar, finding a song new to me, but in a way i had the feeling i new the song when i was a kid.
A few days ago, I dug up an old equalizer one of my friends gave to me years ago. Since I had the attachments I needed, I tried it out, and it worked wonderfully, so I started calling it the "glory box". Then today, by pure coincidence, I find this song. I'm calling divine intervention.
Same exact sample. Funny thing, both Tricky and Portishead sampled the same part at the same time without knowing of each other. It's from an Isaac Hayes track.
The sample has been used numerous times, most recently by I monster, Tricky and lupe fiasco, Portishead used the sample from from Isaac heyes' Ike rap 2 which was in turn sampled from "Day Dream" performed by the Gunter Kallmann Chorus, which is a cover of a wallace collection song, :)
stendeb very interesting. Never knew that. Always thought portishead was first. And I swear portishead had an earlier version of this song to before glorybox
This track send me straight back to the streets of Aalborg. Wandering restless, without reason down the streets. I just wanna be. Wanna be. In a frame of me I see. I see the who I'm not. Give me a reason to love you. To love. Silos rising, intersections cross. Crossing intersections. In the beginning of forever, this is the beginning. Forever and ever. Time to move over. Shit, this track is so bound to my emotions, my history, my everything. Peace out people. Love from Denmark.
You know what? When I was 16/17-years-old, and I needed to wait hours for the bus (to go back home after party) I used to sit down on the corner and sing it all the night, still drunk... that were good moments... I felt so freee
love to see that people are helping each other with trip hop, where I live people haven't even heard about trip hop and the girl I was in love with played it to me, this isn't music for anyone
People, please enjoy this fabulous song. It was in a Levi's commercial in 1990s. I have been a Portishead fan ever since. Also listen to Bitter-Sweet's songs too - kind of similar feel. Cheers!
Had not heard this song in years, and I came across it omg its like finding treasure all over again.
me too!
its been a decade come back and listen to it
This song ...it just goes deep into you. You feel it in your bones. You just get affected when a song is good. And this is a powerfully good song.
Same feeling here it’s like you realized that your bones have feelings too 😊
This whole album is great. You can hang and smoke with good friends to it. You can sit alone and reminisce to it. You can make love to it. The whole thing.

They were the pinnacle of human music genius. Nothing can compete with 1997 Portishead. Neither before, nor after.
How I had not heard this song until last year is beyond me! Now I can't stop listening to it. It's simply amazing!
"through this new frame of mind, a thousand flowers could bloom"- beautiful lyrics to a truly awesome song that puts you in a hypnotic, dreamstate.♥
I absolutely love Portishead and I always have. They are just brilliant ! Their music is so eccentric and it's just mind-blowing.
You're lucky if you buy an album and find three really good songs on it. Glory box is just one treasure from an album packed full of gems. Superb stuff indeed.
What an incredible sound! I totally admire Portishead!
still one of the most stunning records i have listened to. I can't stop listening to it.
From all the re-imagined versions of les fleurs, i think this is hands down the best.. And it proves the gifted, don't care what period of time, always contemporary music style of Portishead.
Still my best song ever. The're the source of triphop we love, so just give all respect to them. The're my heroes forever.
Nah... the source of the Trip-Hop we all love would be Tricky and Massive Attack.
Doesn't stop Portishead getting much much respect, such Beth, so Pedestal
Alan L You're right, MA was essential. But anyway, for me Dummy made the difference.
Alan L True..there is so much of similarity between Tricky's "Hell's round the corner" and Glory Box..I miss that period in Trip Hop evolution..
Yeah so listen to Isaac Hayes Ike's rap 2, you'll see who your real heroe.
This band is just pure bliss.
Bristol has a magical way of producing outstanding musicians.

the way she sings is fantastic . great music too
ADDICTED How can this be over 15 years old since release ? I am still in awe of Portishead
25 years now ! still relevent
I'm so tired of playing
Playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I've been a temptress too long
Just...
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman
From this time, unchained
We're all looking at a different picture
Through this new frame of mind
A thousand flowers could bloom
Move over and give us some room
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman
[INSTRUMENTAL]
So don't you stop being a man
Just take a little look from outside when you can
Show a little tenderness
No matter if you cry
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
It's all I wanna be is all woman
For this is the beginning of forever and ever
It's time to move over...

This reminds me of Hell is Round the Corner by Tricky.
Same exact sample. Funny thing, both Tricky and Portishead sampled the same part at the same time without knowing of each other. It's from an Isaac Hayes track.
Oh awesome!
Sounds like daydream's wallace dream collection too
The sample has been used numerous times, most recently by I monster, Tricky and lupe fiasco, Portishead used the sample from from Isaac heyes' Ike rap 2 which was in turn sampled from "Day Dream" performed by the Gunter Kallmann Chorus, which is a cover of a wallace collection song, :)

You know what? When I was 16/17-years-old, and I needed to wait hours for the bus (to go back home after party) I used to sit down on the corner and sing it all the night, still drunk... that were good moments... I felt so freee
Glory Box is definitely my most favorite Portishead song.
