  • 20 once believed-to-be extinct bridled nailtail wallabies (Onychogalea fraenata) have been released by ecologists into the ‪@AustralianWildlifeConservancy‬ Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary in New South Wales.
The wallabies were translocated from Taunton National Park in Queensland to help improve genetic diversity in the reintroduced NSW population.
Most of the wallabies are fitted with tracking collars that will monitor their progress over the next 12 months and ensure they're thriving in their new home.

That's excellent 👍 They are just beautiful 🥰
One little question: Those collars appear very snug; what happens is the wearer gets too big for it? Or are they full-grown already?

We asked the AWC - they told us…
The age range of the wallabies includes fully grown adults and younger sub-adults, with the fit of collars adjusted accordingly. The collars need to be snug enough to minimise the risk of something getting caught in them, but loose enough for comfort and to accommodate some growth - the fit appearance can sometimes be a bit deceptive in photos, depending on the angle. Each collar also has an elastic ‘weak-link’ which allows the collar to come off if enough force is put on the collar (for example males fighting may pull at the other’s collar with enough force to get it off). We also conduct regular trapping surveys which allows us to check the fit of the collars and make adjustments or remove them if it becomes necessary.
