Don't understand so much negativity here. If you don't like the knife, don't buy it. What the f#@k do you care if someone else likes or dislikes the knife. It's $20 freaking dollars. That can't even buy a decent bottle of bourbon.
Hey andy . Boiled vinager in a tall glass make for a faster and more even coating. Opinels have there quirts. But if you tune it you will love it. I use the smaller one as neck knife .
I love Opinel knives. It was my first high carbon steel knife too. However, I did this the wrong way round. Lost the knife in the garage and when I found it the blade had rust spots, I was so angry with myself. So wire wool, Brillo pads and sand paper to clear the rust, a good wash and then a long vinegar soak - suspended in a bottle for a week. A good sharpen and now the blade looks amazing, wish I had done that first though.
I have been wary of these buggers ever since I guillotined my index finger through my own complacency. Doesn't stop me having a couple around now and will try applying mustard with a fine brush to get a pattern then hot vinegar. Why not? They're cheap as chips and you get a lot of blade for your money...... just don't neglect to lock that collar :)
What a beautiful patina. I really dig the pattern you got. I find the fastest, most dramatic patina I get is using white vinegar and cold water 1:1 ratio. But if it ain’t broke. Don’t fix it. And that knife came out great! Subscribed!
should have one of these coming in soon (its a 6 rather than a 10) and i plan on doing this as soon as i get it. i’m as new as possible to all this so i just wanted to see if u could help me out with what kind of aftercare i’d need to follow after doing this process? im under the impression that wiping it with oil is important - but after doing this, how often would be needed? and would the type of oil matter much? sorry for the questions, i figured i’d see if u could give me some pointers !
opinels are IMHo one of the best folders in this price range (and in some cases, few prices ranges higher too). i didnt liked it because of handle, but once i've modded mine, it has become EDC folder (and my paramilitary 2 is weeping in the drawer LOL ), which work absolutely fantastic with bigger, full tang knives.
As someone who has had knives for years, I will tell you right now if Opinel knives were any good you would NOT have to bother with this nonsense. Opinel are either lying about the quality of the steel, or it is not properly treated. In other words Opinel knives are rubbish steel cheaply made.
The steel is not treated, and they don't claim it is. It's just brushed XC90 carbon steel, therefore it WILL rust when left unattended in places where moisture may be. They are in fact cheaply made, and they are cheaply bought. Anywhere from 10-20 (depending on size) a piece in € or $. If rust is a total no-go for you, get an INOX (12C27M steel) one for 1 euro/dollar more..
@@tostimofo" The steel is not treated, and they don't claim it is. " HILARIOUS. They are famous for rusting, regardless of where or how they are kept, famous for poor finishing. As for spending a bit more, there are knives out there that cost half as much which do not rust, have much, much better QC.
@@chrisdavies3659 I'd be interested in examples of knives that perform better on all fronts for little more. Opinels have served me well, and the no5 that has been in my pocket for years has yet to rust or fail.. Also, what do you mean by poor finishing? The blades are just machine brushed steel without coating or anything.. They're rough out of the box, but not nearly as rough as the EL Herder Tukan knife that I bought at roughly twice the price of my opinel 7.
hello I do not agree with what you said about the opinion piece! it is a high quality safe knife and a known worldwide lack that has been widely proven! the blade ages well with its time from the moment you maintain it like all knives with dignity and respect !!!!!

Nice job Andy, great end result.

great vid, am doing this now
thanks!
I stuck my Nr.9 into two onions for a day and a half for a nice looking patina. Looks almost like folded steel now.
Nice job mate! Turned out good 👍🏽👍🏽😎
Thank you brother, at least its a bit more protected now, hope i find yourself and Mrs mad dog well.
I think you have also invented a battery :-)

I consider opinel as French higonokami
Looks good, try yellow mustard you can made neat pattern just dab on with your finger, almost looks like damaskas
Use hot vinegar and it will only take 20mins.
Wouldn't a cup done the same thing?
Two issues for me personally. Firstly I do not have one and unless it was a gift I would not get one, and secondly I am allergic to vinegar lol
No Opinel?
Life's tough .. empty ..
