    -----------
In today’s episode of Figuring Out, we have the co-founders of University Living, Saurabh Arora and Mayank Maheshwari, in conversation with Raj Shamani. University Living, a pioneering global student housing management platform, addresses the critical housing gap for 35 million students. They let students search, compare, and book from over 2 million beds in 515+ student-popular cities across the UK, Ireland, Australia, Europe, USA, and Canada, totaling over 65k properties on their website. Over the past 8 years, they have accommodated students for more than 15 million nights. The platform, interacting with over 8 million students of 120 nationalities to date, offers a diverse range of off-campus housing solutions including PBSAs, apartments, and homestays. In addition to accommodation, University Living provides end-to-end services such as health insurance, flight tickets, guarantor services, international money transfers, student bank accounts, visa services, room essentials, and airport pickup.
In this episode, we talked about common reasons students go abroad to study, the exposure people get when they study abroad, and the differences between Indian and foreign universities. We then discussed why many students prefer going to the US, whether careers really grow in the US, and the top universities there. We also talked about the scams that happen there and how students can protect themselves from those scams.
Towards the end, we discussed the costliest cities in the world, when to book accommodation while moving to study abroad, and the backstory of Canada's housing crisis. We covered the top 5 countries and the university and living expenses that a student has to bear. They also talked about free universities abroad and how University Living works and earns profits. They have paid a bombshell (Paid Guest) to be on this podcast. Trying to peddle the study abroad propoganda. It only makes sense to go to top universities irrespective of geography. If you can’t make it there then find something that gives purpose and invest that money there. More than 100 batchmates of mine have gone to UK to study in mediocre colleges for “Exposure” and they have all come back empty handed and found jobs that don’t require their UK degrees.

Jo part time karte hai, bahat streess lena parta hai, aur yaha pai parhayi easy nahi hai.. mostly Indian students assignments kisi freelancer se banate hai..jiske karone low marks..aur maximum Indian students fail karte hai. Teh reason hai, yeh truth hai..baad mai jaakr inlgo Post Study Work Visa nahi milte agar 2 subjects mai bh fail huwa.. toh India return. Aur yehi kahani 50% students ke sath hota hai. Bhai parhayi bahat jyada hard hai, koi log parhayi nahi karte.. mai roj library mai parhta hu, waha pai only British and Chinese students dekhne ko milega. Indians,Pakistani, African yeh log part time pai jarurat se jyada focus hai.

Yes very true especially doctors, due to reservation system most of the general category candidates didn't get government medical college and then they study from private and go to us,Australia, Europe, for residency even most of the aiims delhi students go abroad and settle there and that's the reason for scarcity of good doctors, because imagine people getting 200 and 300 marks in neet out of 720 getting government medical college and general category students even after scoring 600 cannot get a seat because 60% seats are reserved toh aise doctors kidney hi bechenge na,I mean most of the general category people opt for foreign country for residency and there in USA more than 50% doctors are Indian 😢this is the reality of Indian education system 😢😭

I don't doubt professors from IIT are great but it was easier for me to get access to quality education but spent 40 Laks (along with scholarship). I know working there I will recover this money spent.
As for personal development, living on my own helped me learn to manage expenses, doing all my chores, and managing mental and physical health. Furthermore, I connected with people from dozens of countries.
For me it was a good decision and I do realize it might not be the same for everyone because there are struggles.

Don't blame reservation! corruption is responsible for this, the unplanned city is responsible, the government not promoting research work, casteism is responsible for this, people keep saying tu janta hai mere baap ko? In fact, in a foreign country it does not matter if the parents are from a powerful background, parents ask their children to leave the house once turned 18 years old and they have to work hard and leave on their own, not like you blaming everyone else!

The rent in dublin for a 1bhk is more than most of the cities they mentioned. Central dublin would cost you around 1800euros (1,60,000 INR) at least for a 1bhk.

I think nowadays, people research about universities and countries for higher education. I have seen students from IITs and private universities research first about the ranking of universities, courses they provide, professors no., Research & Development and many other things. They see how is the country as a whole. Dont just think about students who are going after 12th and they just want to go to a different country and do any course. These students just want to move out of India.
There are top-notch universities in The US and the UK and Yes Europe as a whole is a great option but also the course plays a crucial role. There are chances that the university is very good but the course you are choosing is not that good. It is important to find a university which is good for your course and the ranking of the university also matters.
And another thing, very less no. of students have funds available. Most of them take a study loan which can vary from 20 L - 55 L for masters course and 25 L - 80 L for Bachelors course.
It is simple and the truth is that if you are going to a good University abroad and pursuing a good course. There are good chances that you will earn 50 L - 70 L after your studies abroad. Same if you studying in India then you will earn somewhere between 10 L - 25 L after masmaster'sso if you have graduated from a top university in India.

I have been living in abroad and have moved between different countries in Europe. Fortunately I never spent any penny of education abroad. When I connect with my friends who choose to study here are struggling to be honest. There are lots of cases specially in Europe where people pursue their education and struggle to get any relevant experience and now they have to repay their loans. job market is anyways better in US but the exposure they are talking about even for the mid tier college is not so true. as many of my friends in US told me that more than 80% of their classmates where Indians 😅 it could be even more in some cases (this is specific for masters) so please be aware if you want to travel, earn some money and travel to different countries before making any expensive decision. I still believe the though competition in India helps us to improve and when you learn to handle that you become valuable to the entire world. I have studied from a tier 3 college in India with no placement

I happened to have visited some of these so-called leading universities of Noida as a part of the campus placement team way back in 2012-13. As mentioned here students end up paying about 30 lakhs for those MBA degrees. These universities normally provide admission to them who can pay that much. Students are not much intelligent/ capable. Trust me our plan was to select 30 and we just ended up having about 5 because to us they were of the quality whom we just can not employ.

But I'm targeting specifically to get JBIMS, Mumbai as it's known for its finance courses, good roi, and great alumni networks.. so, I have time till march 2025 to prepare,
2025-2027, 1st masters degree, mba in finance, Then maybe go for work experience, for about a year or two mostly in banking sector, In these years, prepare for gmat, brush up my skills, maybe data science, web3, and in general broadening my horizon.. 2027 onwards give gmat and go abroad for further specialization, I really want to go abroad to study and have really good time and friends over there.. if I don't go I'll always have this fomo that I didn't go abroad despite having every chance for it, So please guide me, What will be the best route to achieve my goals?

I have been into tech hiring for more than 10 years and 6 years into non IT hiring... I have never seen any company giving more importance to an average international college student. It doesn't make sense. The interviewer will judge what the candidate brings on the table. It doesn't matter if you have a graduation degree from an Indian college or a foreign college. It does make a difference at masters level but not at undergraduate level for sure.
