Plenty of them (especially the newer faces) genuinely appreciate bootlegs as it might be the only way their performance is ever captured. Understudies generally appreciate them for this reason twice as much!!
cant help but notice that the way he talks about gavin here, despite him still being here when this was recorded, is so reminiscent of what was said in everybody's tributes to him. he was so loved.
He might have known Gavin was sick. I think a lot of his friends and family knew. That might be why he made sure to put in all these compliments. But truly it's hard to tell, everyone kind of always spoke about him like this.
But the way he spoke so lovingly about "the beautiful Gavin Creel...everybody loves Gavin" -- the same words his friends and colleagues used in their condolences -- made me think that was Borle's way of acknowledging his passing. Goes to show that he was as genuinely beloved in life as he was in death.
He loves his life, his work, and knows he is where he belongs in the world. No need for him to be anyone but himself and anything but grateful for it. He's happy and it shows.
I was Christian's apartment-mate back in 1994 at West Virginia Public Theatre. He was 21 or 22 and cast in A CHORUS LINE (with an indescribably spectacular Laurie Gamache reprising her Broadway role as (the final) Cassie) and worried about the dancing (I was stage managing NUNSENSE in WVPT's smaller theatre). How far he's come! Congrats, Christian!

Him saying he has a bfa in rolling on the floor got me. Literally getting my ba in theatre now. and i have a class where i just roll on the floor. LOVE YOU CHRISTIAN
I could listen to him talking about theatre for the rest of my life. He's such an incredible artist and you can see in his eyes how much he loves his job. Thank you Christian, you're a constant inspiration ❤
Idc Him as Emmett in Legally Blonde is just *chefs kiss* I LOVE Christian Borle, I just love his silly personality, and omg he can be so humble too. Do any of you remember when during something rotten, they made a social media account for Christain Borles arms XD
Just saw Christian in Tammy Faye and was blown away. He really brings it all in a role that calls for it all. Saw him in Some Like it Hot and Something's Rotten too--always brilliant, always physically surprising and emotionally wide-ranging. He's just a wonderfully watchable actor.
How are there not comments about the WEDDING RING on his finger?! I knew he had a serious girlfriend/partner, but didn’t know he got hitched! Which tracks, as he’s notoriously private, of course. Congrats, Christian and Skye!
The wit on this man… I swear to God, I could watch him talk for hours 😂😂. Especially towards the end where he started to really let loose, particularly when talking about where Willy Wonka. Hilarious 😂
Seeing Christian in Peter & the Starcatcher was truly a magical experience. Seeing his face light up talking about Sutton was so beautiful and I'm actually glad to realize he recorded this before Gavin passed so this reverence wasn't washed over by sadness. What a special soul.
I was (and still am) a big Christian Borle fan. When I was studying musical theatre, I was constantly looking up footage of his performances and interviews he did. I was fortunate enough to have done an intensive with the American Theatre Wing in New York where he came in and spoke with us - after which we got a chance to see him in Something Rotten after he won the Tony. A class act.
So touching to hear Christian talk about Gavin Creel. Not sure if this was recorded before or after his death but all the same love him giving props to the gift that he was. Speaking of gifts, Christian will always be one of my absolute favorite stars on Broadway and I hope to be able to see him one day. An absolutely talent❤
8:22 yesss we stan kind of relationship!!!!!! Christian Borle is my favorite actor and, throughout this video, his personality/sense of humour proves why over and over again. Also currently dealing with getting a BFA in Theatre so 33:52 was.....accurate.
Legally Blonde on MTV was literally my intro to Broadway and what made me a Broadway fan, and I love that cast so much, and I got to see Christian in Bye, Bye, Birdie at the Kennedy Center last summer and like I was totally fangirling as a 20-something
I saw that revival of JCS in 2000 and HATED IT! And I love the musical. The costumes made everyone look like castaways from a regional production of Rent. Rather than contemporary, it made JCS feel like a past-its-prime show that was desperately trying to make itself relevant. So I LOVE that he fully acknowledges and embraces that it really was not very good. So few actors, especially B’way actors, seem willing to do that for fear of offending someone. I love that he just puts it all out there. What a great storyteller he is, too. I saw him in that production of Elegies with William Finn, Betty Buckley and Carolee Carmelo and thought he was great! This has been so much fun to watch.
Me, too. I first saw him in Nov. 2021 and he was one of the highlights of my trip (the other was Aaron Tveit). He was wonderful in Little Shop. Also got to see him twice in Some Like It Hot.
I’d like to thank Christian Borle for letting me know (by way of this video) that “everything costs money” 😮 My life is forever changed by these wise words. I’m gonna embroider that $hit on a pillow right now. 😉😆💞
As a student currently in my senior year of my Musical Theater BFA, this was an incredibly inspiring watch. Thank you for sharing your story with such earnestness and wit!
My brothers school Just did Footloose! And my brother in senior yr played Willard! My junior brother was an excellent Shaw Moore. I did Legally Blonde, so I know Christian Borle from that and a few other shows. Never knew he had done a stint (or two) with Footloose and Willard! Very cool.
Tap dancing had improved from Mary Poppins in time for Some Like It Hot, yeah, cause there was a lot more of it in between. Also, they skipped a lot of off-Broadway shows it would have been cool to hear him talk about. Edit: I know they don't all use Playbill but some of them do. For him, most recently, I'm pretty sure Little Shop did.
It's a Playbill thing. If their program wasn't a part of the show, you don't hear about it in these. But they are very interesting. (for the most part)
@@nssquared9174 Yes, but some off-Broadway productions use Playbill. I don't know about every off-Broadway show he's done, but I believe his most recent Little Shop did.

I’ve never seen a big Broadway star request a bootleg before. 😂 It makes me appreciate him more.

Pretty sure joe iconis films bootlegs of his own shows

" I don't know if any of you theater lovers know we have a history" oh we know
this GAGGED me omg

But truly it's hard to tell, everyone kind of always spoke about him like this.
"We start rehearsals a week from today." They started Tammy Faye rehearsals on September 3rd. Gavin was still alive when Christian recorded this.
i figured when he didn’t say anything about it. so so sad
I noticed that he didn’t acknowledge his passing, that makes sense
Oh I needed this.
i was trying to figure that out too since he didn’t mention it, thank you so much

I, for one, would fully embrace a series of Christian Borle talking about every single episode of Smash. Give the people what they want, Playbill!!!
YES to this.
40 minute video of Christian Borle, oh I needed this today
How am I just realizing that Christian Borle had the coolest career of all time
EXCUSE ME, CHRISTIAN BORLE ON UA-cam IN THE YEAR 2024, this has made my week
I love that he talks about how the Tony award spins the way I talk about dresses when they have pockets.
this is so accurate!
I love how he talks about Gavin and Sutton. A class act. He’s brilliant of course
He loves his life, his work, and knows he is where he belongs in the world. No need for him to be anyone but himself and anything but grateful for it. He's happy and it shows.
I would have loved to hear about his time in Little Shop off-Broadway! He was so good in that show!
Exactly! I was surprised it wasn’t mentioned
Yeah! I was gonna say it was so good I’m seriously surprised it wasn’t mentioned
