    I think using an iPad for programming like this is okay, for a slightly more mobile approach than carrying a laptop around. But I'd want to warn students and new programmers: don't get an iPad as your primary device. You need to learn how to write code on Mac, Windows, or Linux, or you'll be counting yourself out of consideration for most job opportunities. I'm sure this guy has prior programming experience with more traditional hardware, but has learned how to integrate an iPad into his job specifically.
    I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying don't hold yourself back from the start just because you can technically write code on an iPad and iPads are cool.

      I learned to code on a terminal..... The iPad is light years beyond those. Back then a big upgrade was going from a green screen to amber. Those were nice.

    People: “You can’t do REAL work on an iPad.”
    Chris: “Hold my coffee.”

    • @NickCarterPoops
      @NickCarterPoops 4 роки тому +3

      Disagree. You can do "REAL" work on any iPad. you might have to be a bit creative and find work-arounds and such. But you can do any work that you want. I use my iPad Pro as a front-end terminal to my Linux LAMP Stack Server. With the Jump Desktop that Chris suggested, you can even remote manage Macs and Wintels. What "REAL" work are you talking about. Give example plz.

      Of course, you can do anything you want, but how efficient it is? I can imagine how painful it is to do coding with iPad, like, you don't have a decent coding software like VCode, and the code don't even run properly in the iPad, that means you only write the code, but can't test it out immediately.

    • @SlaydrXD
      @SlaydrXD 4 роки тому +2

      @Nick Carter I believe you misread my comment. I support the idea that you CAN do real work from an iPad.
      @Stephen C it’s not always about the efficiency, but the joy of working from your preferred device. And efficiency comes over time. I’m a professional photographer and web designer. I built my workflow on a Mac, and switching to an iPad exclusively was definitely a process and a learning curve, but it forced me to be even more creative (which was great for my field of work) and now I’m just as efficient if not more than I was on my Mac.

    • @StephenC555
      @StephenC555 4 роки тому +1

      @@SlaydrXD Maybe someone does enjoy using iPad for these purposes. But I find it kind of funny when someone said be "more creative", such that an iPad can do anything. It means: Yes, iPad does not fit for that purpose, but I push it hard, very hard... so that it finally does fit.

      I would be so scared to push anything before running it locally and confirming all of my changes. Do you have a way to verify things on the iPad?
      Honestly for front end apps the two things I'm missing the most are a terminal app for npm/webpack and a desktop browser's dev tool. The inspect Browser and play.js apps get close, but so far I can't see myself using those for anything but following tutorials or messing around with toy projects. Then finally, one other nice to have would be if the iPad extended to external monitors, instead of just mirroring displays.

    I can’t recommend a Raspberry Pi 4 as best accessory for iPad enough. Not only can you power the device from the USB-C port of the iPad Pro. But they are small enough to keep out of the way in the house and have local backups, file storage, and desktop class needs. You can VNC into it from the iPad or even SSH into them with “Shelly” if you like console commands.
    If your company has O365, setup a private channel in Teams and link O365 in there as a webpage. You can tap this and have full access to the desktop class versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, and well everything MS Office. 👍

    I found CodeSandbox works really well with ipad. It can be installed on home screen. I think it’s much more productive way to work with code, because it has full support of TypeScript (type hints, type errors etc.), GIT, npm, Jest and so on. The main problem with CodeSandbox is that its feature of previewing working version of code is limited to some pre installed boilerplates like Create React App. But if you write a lot of unit tests it should be fine for some part of work.

    That's a lot of efforts you've put into making these series, good job! Though I trully like the way people like you experiment with their workflows and try to replace their daily work routines with something more elegant, it doesn't make sense for me as a developer how the device like iPad Pro can be thought as a true repacement for coding device. Being a digitally ascetic myself I've spent a lot of my time figuring out a lightweight approach for doing my code tasks, but in the end it just feels that the iPad OS was not meant to be developer friendly from the gorund up. IMO maybe some bare bones simple code editing (looking at it strictly from the plaint text editing perspective) can fit here, but not the real dev stuff (debugging, refactroing, dev environment, docker etc.). Nevertheless, I like your work, cheers ;)

    File management is still crappy on iPad. I don't understand why you can't have things both "on my iPad" and backed up to the cloud. I suppose you can download things from iCloud, but then iCloud decides when you don't need it on your device anymore? What if you want to make a backup of your "on my iPad" folder to an external drive or a Mac, I don't think you can short of individually exporting all of the files. For all the advancements in hardware and software, iPad still feels like an iCloud terminal to me instead of a true standalone device. I don't feel that my files are as secure, permanent and retrievable on an iPad as they are on my Macbook.

    Chris, great to see fellow IT guys and youtuber producing such good content. Really like Writing code apps. Still looking to find a way to actually compile the code on ipad (java basically)

    The question is the price, because with the money you need to buy an Ipad Pro, you can easily buy a MacBook Pro.

      Ipad should always be the addition for laptop/ pc. I cant really think of any professions that will get a tablet as the first tool.

    If Excel on the iPad would only support pivot tables :-(

      This is the only thing I’m missing. I use an iPad as my main work device, but i just need pivot tables and I’d be set.

    I have an iPad Pro w/ the Magic Keyboard. And i really love it. But i would never use this for coding unless it received a proper coding environment. You are doing simple things like updating static site templates which i guess this works for that... but it means you are pushing your code everytime you want to preview it on the browser. How are you testing before pushing? How are you running the code locally? If my company found out i was pushing code directly to our servers without testing locally they would probably fire me. Software companies like mine have an entire process for QA, and devops. How do you compile your code? How do you utilize CLIs for a framework like Vue, or React.js using an iPad?

    Why don’t you use google drive? It works well across all my Apple products and I integrate it into the files apps. I only mention this because I have access to google drive from anywhere from any device.

    Same situation as you - was looking into replacing Dropbox with iCloud, but you can’t stream videos with iCloud. That’s pretty much a showstopper for me.

    microsoft office apps on ipad is so poorly optimised. I’m using the ipad pro 2018 and the text selection in Word is so bad. And the document always reload when i switch back from another app. I hate this so much because I can’t migrate wholly to Pages yet but using Word on ipad is so suffering.

    You are really complicating your work by using a iPad. Only true benefit is that you can milk the iPad videos in UA-cam

    You showed writing code, but how do you TEST/RUN the code via the ipad? Are you doing this via a VM and JumpDesktop? A web-based service (such as Coder)? Something else? Thank you for the video series!

    Hello! Nice content. I am data engineer that works with python and data pipelines. I work with MacBook Pro 13 inch, but I want an iPad Pro for my own productivity (mainly to develop data projects). What do you think about that? Again, nice content and congratulations! Take care!
