Installing tesla (style) radio in the tundra

- Today we install a tesla style radio from Phoenix Automotive in the Tundra. I have my cameraman helping me so disregard any shaky camera work. All in all it took us about 30-45 minutes. Really liking the radio thus far.
Tesla style radio installed: www.phoenixaut...
Adapters to keep factory GPS: amzn.to/2VXV2oC and either amzn.to/2MeOFgY or amzn.to/2MfbBwt.
Hey brother! i just wanted to stop back by and say thank you. Your videos helped me 1,000,000 times more than the customer service did. I really appreciate it! i was able to get the climate controls to work and many other things because of your videos.
Thanks for showing this install! i Just bought one similar. Hows your stereo holding up?
The original Phoenix screen died. Got another, same thing. Ended up getting a Klyde brand and it's been rock solid for years.
@@KameleonKustoms is there a canbus the climate control connects to? My climate control is all shadowed out and not working. The plug that connects to the factory climate control does not fit anywhere on the device. Thanks for any assistance you can give me. I cant seem to get support to get back to me from Phoenix.
@@MissingPersonsMysteries Phoenix never replied to any of my messages. There was an adapter that was for the canbus if I remember correctly. On my klyde unit it is just directly on the unit, no adapter.
@@KameleonKustoms thanks for getting back. I bought one on marketplace and it seems to be missing the canbus and im missing the antenna and gps antenna. Unfortunately, i cant find them online on Phoenix website. i really appreciate your help! if there is anything i can do to return the favor let me know.
Now i know im hooked on The Tundra.. Just one of the up- grades that makes this hot truck hotter. Nice content.
Y'all did an amazing job I loved this video!!
Great video! Thank you!
Great video, and good camerawork from your helper !! Subbed, watched the whole thing and don’t even have a tundra 👍
nice kid god bless him!
Loved the camera man’s commentary!
I'm sure you figured it out but the red and white rca cables were for the factory aux port
Extremely detailed video I like it!
Nice job! Either you’re really good at disassembling a dash, or the Toyota is easy. I’ve stopped trying. Every time I do it I bust a tab. There’s always something that needs to be pulled in a different direction than I’ve assumed. You find that out immediately after it snaps.
Toyota got their 2022 Tundra idea from this video
Do you by chance still have the stock unit and a/c controls? The screen that’s in my truck isn’t the best and I’d like to go back to stock.
Have you had any problems with the unit since installing it? Was looking into upgrading mines
I did an update video on this subject. Check it out if you have time. Basically though, the Phoenix units were trash and I went through 2 in a short period of time. Ended up getting a better brand and have had zero issues to this day. It has been a few years now.
Hey Donny B,
I’ve been looking into getting one of these. How has it been operating for you? If any issues were you able to resolve them fairly easily? Appreciate the video. Take care.
Nice would like to see more of it friend
I jus purchased this and had it installed by west coast car audio . The big down part is They can’t get the back up camera to work . I’m suppose to go back in next week to get it checked out . Is there any info you can give me ? It’s installed in my 2018 Toyota Tundra
I have a gen 4 for a 21 tundra and my audio only comes out of the dashboard speaker and reverse camera doesn't work
Hi, how much you paid for the unit? Where you buy it? I want to get one but I want the right one. Thanks
So is their a way to select your vehicle's dispaly on the screen. For example, you had the Tundra displayed, is it factory loaded that way, or you have to select?
Each different model typically comes with that model displayed. If you want to change it, it's a fairly simple process by copying some files over from USB.
@@KameleonKustoms thank you very much💯🙏
If you open up your sunroof, goodbye infotainment..... I’m gonna put in the Tesla style
How has the screen been I want one but do t want to waste my money
I have the 1794 and i want to do the same radio on my but i saw some bad reviews for those units! Can u tell me how is radio so far?? Thank u ! Amazing video and the cameramen just kill it!!
If you don't mind tinkering some it's a great unit. Once setup it can be a solid solution. I am doing an update on all this soon so be on the lookout for that video.
nice! its sad to see a 2019 suffers the same problems my 2014 1794 edition does as far as the stock HU loosing BT signal. PS you Link to the unit no longer works, But gets you to the site and the HU is not hard to locate. This is on my ToDo list
which phone are you guys using? my iPhone 10 works flawlessly. I'd be taking my truck to Toyota or try another phone 10x before even considering this "upgrade". Looking at the mod's price, durability, and not all the functions work. Toyota has some of the best BT quick connect reviews and reputation in the industry from 3rd parties.. I'll be asking my dealer.
So I have a 2020 SR5 Crewmax and I just tried to install this today, however when I started to plug everything in only 1 of the wires was compatible and everything else wasn't. Any advice?
Make sure you got the correct harness. When you ordered you should have gotten the 2020 harness. Sounds like you got the earlier one.
@@KameleonKustoms ah I see, well it's cause a friend of mine gave me the radio from his 2015 SR5 so I know nothing of it. I'm assuming I can order it from the Phoenix store? Thank you so much for your quick response
@@2A_LEGOS you should be able to contact Phoenix and get the correct harness.
@@KameleonKustoms I contacted them and they replied first thing this morning, unfortunately they just sent me the link to their site. I'm unsure what exactly I am searching for because when I put 2020 Tundra Harness nothing comes up. I'm gonna have to do more research but thank you for your help!
@@2A_LEGOS best of luck. Their customer service is lacking at best. I ended up ditching the Phoenix ones and bought a Klyde brand. Top notch support and zero problems nearly 2 years in.
Teaching a boy how to be a man love it 👍🏽 doing man things....... great video, would’ve been nice to see if it really played movies.
Definitely, gotta teach him how to do stuff himself and not rely on others. The unit does play some movies out of the box but you can also install VLC from the play store to play even more formats.
Looks clean. How’s it working out so far? And will this fit in 2014 Tundra CrewMax?
I ll have an updated video on this soon. In the mean time though overall it is good. The newer ones are better. And yes, this model fits 2014+. They also make one for the 2007-2013.
So totally random but I really wanted led head lights for my 2016 tundra (7 bds 22/12 two piece cleaver ;) but when the leds were installed the radio wouldn’t get reception, then my truck did this b/s and so when it wouldn’t connect all I had was static .....
Great video. Thank you. Question: Does this Tesla Style screen add the dynamic (yellow) lines to the backup/reverse camera? Thanks in advance.
Yes but the stock non-moveable ones can not be removed as they are part of the camera.
@@KameleonKustoms Thanks....Do you mean that the static blue lines cannot be removed/hidden? Thanks
@@joseangel9345 not the oem ones. If you have double lines then one set are oem (not removable) and the other is from the unit and those are a setting to turn on/off.
Amazing video thank you for sharing, does this work for a 2014 SR5 with an iPhone?
Yes, mine is a 2015 so same thing as your 2014
@@KameleonKustoms Thank you, I’m getting the bug upgrade and this was extremely helpful, next is the suspension and fuel economy.
@@vlargxera check out my more recent install video on the Klyde unit. It is a much better unit but has a few differences.
2 years later. Still working well? All controls still working? Any issues?
The original Phoenix unit had issues with the screen dying. Replaced it once and same thing. Ended up getting a Klyde brand one and zero issues. I recently did an update video on this subject.
@@KameleonKustoms thank you for replying
Thanks for the info... I also have a 2014 limited... I cant seem to get the RPM and Speedo to work!
Great vid…
With the new screen & setup are you now able to use Waze or google maps as the GPS versus the factory Toyota GPS system? If yes, are you able to do that wirelessly like google CarPlay?
Waze, Google maps, Sygic, etc all run fine from the unit. I have not tried Apple Carplay or Android Auto on this device yet as you don't need it. Just turn Hotspot on your phone and join the head unit to the Hotspot for internet access. Everything runs on the unit.
@@KameleonKustoms hello, can i play youtube videos on this screen with no problem? Does the stock back up camara works fine?
@@123partyrentals yes to both.
Nice job
Hey Donny B. did you ever figure out what those RCA wires were coming from the vehicles wiring harness?
I have not. I didn't really think more about it after installing it. Ha!
Great video! Do you happen to know if they make one for the SR5 (without the Dual controls for AC)?
Yes, same unit works on both. It is just a setting in the menus to change it to Tundra LO.
Can you give me a link to the plug and play andriod power harness for a 2013 Tundra, it will be greatly appreciated 👍
Love the video. Would you mind sharing the link for the GPS adapter?
All the parts are linked in the description. If any link is not working let me know and I will update it.
Just discovered these radios. Very cool concept, but I didn't see SiriusXM support mentioned anywhere. I imagine there is none due to hardware licensing
Correct. The only way to get SiriusXM is an app on the radio that uses data or get extra hardware to add it.
In your video you did not explain what to with all those extra rca male wires
Are those for connecting to custom amps if you want to bypass the jbl factory amp?
Yes, some are rca output for amps, others are for cameras.
@@KameleonKustoms thanks. I’m considering purchasing one for my 15 1749 but somehow concerned with the Bluetooth issues and voice quality on calls
I see you have an aftermarket trailer brake controller. I thought Tundras come with an integrated brake controller?
Not all Tundras came with the trailer brake controller built in. Even if they did you can upgrade to something better.
how do you like it I have a 2017 tundra I am thinking about it to add it to my tundra what do you think...............
If you get one get the px6. One of my recent videos goes over this.
Can you use factory Bluetooth speaker for phone use or did you have to run one that comes with radio?
You mean the microphone? If so depends on the unit. None use the factory mic but some have the option to install an external mic. My first unit the microphone sucked. As did my second one. My third one has a good internal mic and also has an option for an external one too.
@@KameleonKustoms yeah the microphone. I’m looking at a Unit from ADCmobile but it’s unclear if I have to run an external microphone or of one is built into the unit. Much like you, I don’t like running a bunch of extra stuff that doesn’t look clean
Dude I’m a huge Toyota tundra fan.I subscribed to your channel and gave this video a thumbs up.. all that being said and no harm with this comment, but man you look like an oversized Quentin Tarantino! Lol.
If only I had a similar bank account!
Haha good sport bro. Great video btw. I never even knew this was an option for the truck. Looks sweet!
Hey I was wondering where you got the head unit from and what is the model
I can't recommend this Phoenix brand any more. If you watch a few of my other videos you will see that I had many issues with the screen dying. I ended up setting on a Klyde brand off aliexpress: www.aliexpress.com/item/4000862880910.html is the exact model I have now.
So Months later you still Liking it? and hows the actual sound quality? I'm a bit of a audio head.
So far so good. The sound is far more adjustable than stock. The weak link is still the stock speakers. I'm the same way.
I've been hearing that the wifi aspect of this screen is lacking any reach beyond the inside of the vehicle.
The px3 could only connect within the vehicle. The px6 I have now will connect to the wifi in my house. You have to remember though the unit is in a metal cage so signal is not going to propagate well.
What year is your tundra? I saw on another site that the guy said when he installed in his 19 tundra the collision warning and air bag warning lights all acticated until he put the old one back in.
the same thing is happening with mine also, going to return and put the old one back now
Great job camera man! OK after a year are there any flaws or dislikes you found?
There were a few. I am working on an update video I hope to put out soon.
How was well did this hold up in the long run?
The one installed in this video lasted maybe 6 months. The replacement one lasted a hair shorter. Ended up putting a Klyde branded tesla unit (looks the same as this though) and it has been rocking for 4-ish years and still going strong.
Do they make 1 for 2013 sr5
Can you still control the radio and it’s features from steering wheel?
Yes, all wheel controls still work.
Do you still have your stock climate controls and radio?
Yes. I keep them "just in case"
Did the 4 way blinker button and air bag button come on the unit?
Yes.
My colesterol went up just by watching this video.
I am interested in buying a console like this for my 2017 crewmax tundra. Do you have any suggestions?.
If you want one here are a few tips:
1. Be ready to wait a while for it to arrive. Shipping is still slow.
2. Be ready to tinker to get it dialed in.
3. Go ahead and spend the extra money on the custom firmware. It fixes so much out of the box.
What a great and helpful video, I have a Limited also and been wanting to do this for over a year now. I've seen one that they hooked up an external storage with a 1 terabyte. Can that be added to yours? And do you still like having the knobs? Thanks
I have a 32gb usb thumb drive that I use in the stock plug under the radio. I know others use larger drives just fine. Personally I wouldn't like these units without the knobs/buttons!
What adapter did you use for gps can you send me link please
All of that just to barely show the end result at the end 🤦🏻♂️ so annoying lol
Abraham Rivera seriously
May be in the next video. I'm glad you said then before I watched the whole video
The title clearly says Installing..... Looking at the videos he did do a walkthrough after this.
Wouldn't mind the new redesign 2022 Tundra having a 12 in Screen
Same here. Not likely to happen but would be cool.
@@KameleonKustoms this didn't age well but in the best way possible, they did end up adding a much larger screen and a huge update to the interior, sadly at the cost of a v8
@@taylorpratt6287 exactly. However the oem unit is no where near as customizable as these units are. Plus if you have a current tundra, this is a sub-$1000 upgrade vs buying a new truck for $40k+. Ha!
Hi have. Tundra sr5 limited 2020 what. Have t buy I like. The screen like tha. Help me please
Also do you know what the output voltage is via the rca's
Thanks for the video and the info
Hey do the steering wheel controls work with no issues ? Thanks
Yes. All 3 of my tesla units I've used and the dasaita all had fully functional steering wheel controls.
@@KameleonKustoms fantastic thanks for the informative video
Do you have a link for the gps adapter to retain the factory god antenna??
Any updates on the performance and reliability of this system?
The original Phoenix unit had a dead screen 6 months in. The replacement Phoenix unit did the same thing. Ended up getting a Klyde brand and it has been rock solid for going on 4 years now. So basically stay away from Phoenix and you will be good.
@@KameleonKustoms Where would we find the Klyde brand?
I got mine off AliExpress. This is the main Klyde website for the unit: www.szklyde.com/product/car-multimedia-player-for-tundra/ I am also running the custom firmware from Sergey as mentioned in my other videos. That helps make these units useable.
Hi, what is the difference in tesla vertical radio, and the regular?
Regular meaning the oem one? If so huge difference. Tesla style is a full android radio. It runs most Android apps natively where the oem radio only does a limited number of apps which Toyota keeps removing more and more.
have you had any issues with this I'm thinking about getting it
The original Phoenix brand unit had its screen die within a few months, replacement sane thing. Ended up getting a Klyde brand one and it's been rock solid since.
you bought a wired harness to make fit
How did you mount that trailer brake?

Where can I get that to buy?
Have not watched yet but I hope you get a non glare set of glasses. Hate reflections on glasses in videos
Long term update? Has it given u any problems?
Hows the sound quality etc...
Update video coming out soon.
TL:dr on third unit. But this one is awesome.
@@KameleonKustoms 3rd unit...😱
hes been promising an update video for like 9 months!
@@GarageSaleMonster you got me! It has been a crazy 9 months. We lost 4 family members and a bunch of other stuff. I am working on it though. I promise. What do you want to see in it?
Just published update video. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/ooPDUDypsS8/v-deo.html
So do the buttons on the steering wheel work with the Android radio?
Yes
How did you get the info about the Tesla radio being compatible with the tundra
They sell them as direct replacements for the 07-13 and 14+ tundras.
Great video.. your son did a great job. How’s the new radio been working for you?
Over a year in and pretty good. I'm doing an update video on it soon.
If I don’t have the automatic climate control on my Tundra, will the head unit add that to my truck?
No, that is a vehicle side option.
Donny B. Is there a way to add that option to an SR5? If so, how do you do it & what else is needed?
@@ByronMcKinneyII you would have to replace a lot of the stuff behind the dash plus computer parts. It is a factory only option and is not easily changed.
What about the A/C controls or did I miss that?
A/C controls are on screen with this style unit. No more knobs/buttons down there.
Hi I liked your video I was wondering can I install that same Sotero on my 2019 Tundra? If so how much was the stereo? Thanks 🙏
There are many who have installed this in their 2019 tundras so you should have no problem. However I would wait a little bit for them to release the px6 powered fastboot one. Mine is the px3 (slower processor) and fastboot but the current px6 is only slowboot. See my other video about the difference there.
Donny B. Ok how much do they cost$
You can find good used ones on the Toyota Tundra-Tesla Unit Facebook group (facebook.com/groups/1942765552407328/) for around $500-$600 or so. Or you can buy new for around $800-$900 from Trinity or Phoenix.
Hi where can I buy this Tesla stereo for my truck and how much does it cost and where can they install it?
@@veronicaserrato9827 He answered that question in the comment above this one...
So 4 years later..... How's the long term experience
As mentioned in one of my other videos, went through 2 Phoenix units with dead screens. Went with a Klyde brand and it has been rock solid.
@@KameleonKustoms thank you...
I'll look into Klyde brand... I've also been eyeing the AutoTecPro but there's not much reviews on them.
Do they make non android versions? I don’t have a single android device.
They do not that I am aware of in this form. There are people who mount iPads in their dash but as far as I know they lose the a/c controls and regular radio controls. Also, there are tons of iPhone only people that use these tesla style devices just fine. Some use the unit as just a carplay interface while others use it as it is intended and load the apps they want on it and use them natively.
Does all of the truck data work with the unit?
For the most part yes. As with any aftermarket radio you will lose the dash navigation prompts though.
does your factory JBL amplifier work ? do you have a subwoofer?
This unit works with both jbl and non-jbl. I have non-jbl but I just installed a full JL Audio system and it works great.
How much did the new unit cost? How can I get one?
They range from around $500 to $800 depending on where you buy it.
So this particular model is.......?
Sounds like Tesla need to come up with some better plugs for the connections
Hi,
Thanks for sharing!! How did you like it so far? Any updates ?
Thanks!!
The tesla style is still my favorite form factor by far. I am testing another unit now that has its own pluses though.
Question, I have remote start and when I start my 2014 my heated seats come on or what ever position I left the climate controls have you tested this ?
Yes, the temp and heated seats stay in whatever position you left them. I do this all the time since it has been cold.
@@KameleonKustoms thanks for the fast reply, I just ordered a Unit with the wireless CarPlay module. Hopefully that integrates well. My wife has CarPlay its really a nice thing for IOS users.

hi my radio no turn the stations , please help me
dose it work with the JBL speakers and XM raido?
Jbl system yes, xm you have 2 options, 1. Use the app to stream over hotspot 2. Use the touch commander
hello i have a 2018 tundra 1794 do you have the settings of the car in the new radio
Which settings are you looking for? If you mean like door lock from park or over a certain speed and the like, yes those settings are in the unit similar to the stock one.
Can you shake the camera a little more I was still able to see a little bit of what was happening in fast fwd. thanks
This was one of my first videos. I now have a gimbal that helps with the shaking.
it's a kid pathetic troll
I would have loved to see less of the wiring hassle and more of the settings you were going through.
There is actually another video I did after this one which shows all the settings.
Does that thing have subwoofer rca outputs??
No sub out on my model. I'll look for that on the next one though.
But at the end you going to install back the oem radio that happens to me Chinese radio has a horrible 😤 sound
It really depends on which unit. I have had both good and "bad" sounding units but even the worst sounding tesla style ilwas still better than oem.
