hey gary great vid and content as usual ! id like to give a suggestion. Please mention the used storage amount next time and maybe run the same tests at empty, 50 percent filled and 80 percent filled as the flash memory should get slower as it reaches the max capacity (or you could use fixed memory points like 32 gigs filled 100 gigs filled which might give an advantage to the 1tb storage in s10) different storage formats, etc can show their true worth that way *this should help with real-world usage since most of the time my storage is filled at a certain percentage of capacity. props to Huawei for constantly trying to improve. their work shows and hopefully with refinement, it would be more balanced. isn't the note 10 supposed to come with faster memory?
Didn't even finish the video yet because I already know for myself. Install a full Linux chroot, run some heavy duty python programs i wrote, install any number of apps i want, download movies, iso files etc, and not worry at all about running out of space and having to ',conserve' it. No compromises. Simple. :) I got so used to older devices so easily running out of space and the disappointment and inconvenience that comes with that.Even my Nvidia shield is pitiful. I have a 512gb note 9 and my first thought was 'this is more like it' there is a lot of satisfaction putting whatever you want on it and still using less than 20%. Feels like freedom to me, id take the 1tb even though 512gb is doing well for me.... Need to get over the trauma of suffering with those old devices!! ;)
The RAM could be useful. I would suggest running the same test while using Dex. I'm not sure how the apps scale up to desktop usage and whether or not they use more RAM - They shouldn't theoretically in my opinion, but if they somehow do or if the desktop environment upon launch uses more RAM than the regular launcher, then the amount of RAM could be justified. Maybe not 12 GB, but still - A fairly high amount of RAM could be needed in that scenario. And people might start using Dex more and more. Also, speaking of Dex, convergence is a very interesting topic. I'd love to see a video on Ubuntu Touch, Windows Continuum, Dex, Huawei's thing and so on. Maybe even a comparison between the latter since Continuum is dead and Ubuntu Touch is no longer supported by Canonical, although it is supported by the community in the form of UBPorts.
I think the main reason for me to have bigger storage is so that I dont feel the need to change my phone whenever it keeps spamming me low storage notification. Im using s8 with 64gb and 64gb micro . After 2 years with tons of spofitfy download and pictures taken , it keep asking me to clear for more space which is heck alot of annoying. I decided that I get a 256gb micro and wallah , magic. I immediately like my phone back ! Before this , i was just pissing off.
And in NZ, we are stuck with the EXYNOS chip, 128GB, 8 GB RAM (well, it only really goes up to 4.5GB usable ones), and a single SIM. (Sighs) At least it finally forced me out of the midrange market a month early.
Sir please touch on the benefit of using the mobile device as a computer since there is a docking station available and if this device has enough performance to run Adobe Lightroom or Premiere for smaller projects, if not very intensive work. Thank you
Hi Gary! Can you explain why the S10+ is slower than the P30 Pro and OnePlus 6T because I thought that in SSD, the higher the storage the faster it is than the lower storage. Where the P30 Pro and OP 6T has obviously lower storage but they're faster than the S10+. Lastly, how much storage is in the SSD? And is it NVME or M.2?
@@GaryExplains But if you are running aLinux box inside Dex which have appls like IntelliJ installed or KDEnLive installed, can very well use up this capacity and RAM. 12 GB for developers is not much to be honest....
Running Linux in a VM is very much a niche case and I would argue that while it is nice and geeky, it isn't actually something people do beyond just saying "hey look, Linux on my smartphone." For the extra $600 just get yourself a laptop and run Linux or whatever you want on it.

(manufacturers like to point to slower speed of those to justify removing the option) thanks already prof ;D
makes sense, one plus wants to keep its reputation as speed test champs and fluid instant app opening which all depend on read speeds so they would want their storage to be best in read speed and doesnt really matter in anything else
The gibibyte/gigabyte problem is not nearly as bad as another problem - megabits per second vs megabytes per second. That's an eight-fold difference! Imagine what happens when you work for an ISP and get customers angry about getting speeds that are 8 times slower than the ones they expected.
How much ram speed do they use? Or how about speed on iphone? Do yoi have a benchmark for that? Because i assume that iphone is faster and more fluid because they put faster ram & SSD for their device.. I see no one discuss about that

Hi, Very infrmative video. More RAM == more apps. Beside it, if we use several apps, the unused RAM is used for disk caching., so system does not need to reread the storage again,. Example: Watching 4GB movie file. System only needs to fill the file into the RAM, and if we want to replay it, system just fetchs the content from the RAM, which is way more quicker from reads from storeage. Since you are using termux, in future test/benchmark, try to compile some big program., such as the Linux kernel itself., in several threads, " make -j4" for the example.. "make clean; make -j4" again.. For timeing use "time" functuon. $ time make -j4 $ make clean $ time make -j4 Compiling kernel is a fun way to test system's performance.. and Thank you.
Probably the P30 Pro is using the new file system that Huawei has been testing since last year (EROFS? whatever that is) If only we can actually do multi platform test and see how the Apple devices stack up Either way, this is the result on a Poco F1 64GB model formatted to F2FS Seq read 151.4MB/s Seq write 662.8MB/s Rnd read 25.6MB/s Rnd write 15.36MB/s
Erofs is only for the system partition and it's as bad as zram, you are using cpu cycle for compressing and decompressing stuff while storage isn't that expensive and there is plenty of it available on most flagships.
Gary: If possible can we see a battery drain test on ....... P30 Pro Kirin 980 vs S10+ Exynos 9820 vs S10+ Snapdragon 855 And can we see speed test G on all three phones too ? Please Sir 👍
Just looking at the graphic illustrations , why is it only doing it in 4gb blocks ? just asking , if you have 8 or 12 would it not be reading all as a whole ? Also , having more ram capacity and more storage capacity is not just about using games , more ram can benefit other things like the dex station , using super slow mo , i just checked 270 meg for one minute iirc ? , taking two pics at once , on some cameras taking super high res combination of shots , like an 80 mb pic ? As a dex user , i can definitely see better performance between my 6 gb galaxy note than my S8+ 4 gb , if you have more ram capacity you do have less momentary slow downs when ram resources are in high demand . Going back to storage it is not always about filling up your device , it is also about having ample Storage so you never have to worry about filling it up , Or almost never having to use cloud for uploading and re downloading your pics which imo is an added security benefit and data benefit . Sure you can get by , and you do not need to have all that ram or storage , but it is nice to have . Also throwing a big file , say a photo or video session by using your sd card from your phone into your computer via an sd card reader is still quite fast and a no fuss way of transferring large files.
That extra amount of storage isn't needed and extra ram because I upgrade every year. Anyway, amazing video Gary! The master teacher ! my s10+ is doing amazing
What I'm interested in is, if there is a difference between the different models concerning speeds and usage of the ram and rom. For example if the 1TB Model might be faster then the 256GB model. But great Video ^^
This is an interesting vid. Would love it if you do something similar comparing these android phones RAM/storage speeds vs the iphone Xs. Iphone Xs with lesser RAM seems well optimized and uses a NVMe storage, so I am curious how it fares against these android phones when it comes to such things. It would be a fun comparison.
use the S10+ as video production machine and you will be happy. imaging touring around one day in Rome. late at night you have 1 hour of 4K video raw material. you can produce a 5 minutes clip, edit ist, add your spoken comments, render it and even upload it to youtube. from filming to the end product - all on one machine - that is famtastic!
And a note for those who didn't upgrade to One UI yet, you'll lose Pro Video in Camera/WiFi pattern learning for battery saving which is very important/vertical app switcher which been replaced by a horrible buggy horizontal card-style one/split screen control panel/etc, or stay at Oreo for good.

I had the s8+ as always 2yrs go by and battery life pisses u off so I bought the S10+ for its battery size and the guys on UA-cam kept saying +it’s like butter and very fast”. No....I am on my phone all day I want fast and I want longer battery life.. so now I’m buying the ceramic black 512gb. Is it me? I’ve had Samsung for years and never wanted to go iPhone because they always needed to charge their phones but when I had my s8+ compared to my friends iPhone 7 she could open apps faster than me. So is it all about ram???
Hello I just wanted to point out what you said during your explanation of the four phones about which one can read an write the fastest, it seems pointless to compare the read an right speeds of those other phones to the s10plus 1tb. The s10 plus 1tb has more memory then all those other three phones put together, so naturally a phone that has wayyyyy less memory is probably gonna read or write faster than a phone that has a mighty 1tb capacity. So it probably would have made more sense to take out the s10 plus 1tb an put in a s10 plus 256-512gig an then do the comparison with the other phones.

hey gary great vid and content as usual !
id like to give a suggestion.
Please mention the used storage amount next time and maybe run the same tests at empty, 50 percent filled and 80 percent filled as the flash memory should get slower as it reaches the max capacity (or you could use fixed memory points like 32 gigs filled 100 gigs filled which might give an advantage to the 1tb storage in s10)
different storage formats, etc can show their true worth that way
*this should help with real-world usage since most of the time my storage is filled at a certain percentage of capacity.
props to Huawei for constantly trying to improve. their work shows and hopefully with refinement, it would be more balanced.
isn't the note 10 supposed to come with faster memory?
Didn't even finish the video yet because I already know for myself.
Install a full Linux chroot, run some heavy duty python programs i wrote, install any number of apps i want, download movies, iso files etc, and not worry at all about running out of space and having to ',conserve' it. No compromises. Simple. :)
I got so used to older devices so easily running out of space and the disappointment and inconvenience that comes with that.Even my Nvidia shield is pitiful.
I have a 512gb note 9 and my first thought was 'this is more like it' there is a lot of satisfaction putting whatever you want on it and still using less than 20%. Feels like freedom to me, id take the 1tb even though 512gb is doing well for me.... Need to get over the trauma of suffering with those old devices!! ;)

Thanks Gary I like the simplicity
Gary u are the man, only person I trust with detailed tech ,like this
Was the SSD you used connected via SATA or PCIe?
SATA
Thank you
Thanks for sharing this. Now I know what I’m getting
I need a 1TB storage right now! My 128GB storage is running on fumes... Yeah, more Ram is the way to go, its like a future proof idea.
Get an ad card it's like 20 dollars for 128gb
I think phones should be ok with 10-12gb ram
@@rileyb2448 I think the next option is the 512Gb micro sd. 256Gb sound lacking.
@@mobious01 my 4Gb ram phone is still kicking but I can see the struggles.
Franz Stephen Cortes yeah 4gb is the bare minimum but apps just keep getting more memory hungry
I think Samsung will change the game when they introduce UFS 3.0 ROM & LPDDR5 RAM next year.
It's definitely going to be an improvement over the S10 if they launch this with the S11.
Well One plus will introduce that this year

12:42 Your way of "rounding" these numbers hurts so badly.
Otherwise, nice and very interesting video!
The high memory and 12GB RAM is for Dex app and running Ubuntu on a VM..
I will be doing a video on DEX but my initial thinking is that DEX doesn't require the extra memory.
@@GaryExplains Fair point. I just wanted to point out that the capacity is meant to be utilised in this way. Thats all. But yeah, whether it is worth the cost is truly something to think about.
128 with expansions capabilities is the sweet spot imho. So much cloud storage nowadays.

hey Gary, love your videos. Is there a way for you to make a video talking about security & privacy between android phones and iPhones? I feel like apple overestimate on their privacy through advertising while some android phones (samsung/google) are very underestimated. if not, I understand. thank you for reading this
Did you watch my two videos: Is your phone spying on you & Is Google spying on you?
@@GaryExplains I have and they are very informative. I was referring to Samsung Knox, android enterprise and iOS security enclave, with all due respect. I was curious as to how those three work when it comes to real-time protection

I have total 2 TB in my s10 plus and it almost full at 1.7tb now i love it so much it my dream phone
The first hard drive required a forklift to move it and stored only 5 MB
could you make a video on the storage systems in phones? there is lits of material on yt about m. 2 nvme / sata and all that - but that difference around 8 times in the rnd writes between the huawei and others seems crazy high - whats going on there? where does apple fit into all if this btw? what storage interfsce are phones even using? how slow are sd cards in phones really? (manufacturers like to point to slower speed of those to justify removing the option)
thanks already prof ;D
makes sense, one plus wants to keep its reputation as speed test champs and fluid instant app opening which all depend on read speeds so they would want their storage to be best in read speed and doesnt really matter in anything else
The gibibyte/gigabyte problem is not nearly as bad as another problem - megabits per second vs megabytes per second. That's an eight-fold difference!
Imagine what happens when you work for an ISP and get customers angry about getting speeds that are 8 times slower than the ones they expected.
Finally. Someone who test the limits.
How much ram speed do they use?
Or how about speed on iphone? Do yoi have a benchmark for that?
Because i assume that iphone is faster and more fluid because they put faster ram & SSD for their device..
I see no one discuss about that
This phone is for my sister, she is upgrading SD cards every half a year thousands of photos, btw very nice review super straight to the point i sub for that

We all get your point . Do we really need a BMW M3 , Audi R Ford st , Lotus , Porsche ., when the speed limit = 70 mph ?
Almost. At least with those cars you can go to race tracks or on private land and use them.
@@GaryExplains It's a fair point , i guess my thinking is we all spent lots more than we really need , unless we are very disciplined . Thanks for taking the time to reply . sp My phone is Sony xz1 which is way more than i need but i'm hoping it lasts 5 or so years , so i don't really need 1T , but got caught with a 8G samsung which ran out quickly , i think that colours my judgment . Tks ang .
128GB, 512GB or 1TB? Which one for you?
128GB and a 512GB micro SD card. No need for 12GB of ram it just doesn't seem worth the extra cost. Samsung is only gonna give you 2 os upgrades regardless of device. But if you got the money to burn doesn't hurt to have the 1TB
*_But do you really need it?_*
Hi,
Very infrmative video.
More RAM == more apps.
$ time make -j4
$ make clean
$ time make -j4
Compiling kernel is a fun way to test system's performance.. and
Thank you.
Probably the P30 Pro is using the new file system that Huawei has been testing since last year (EROFS? whatever that is)
If only we can actually do multi platform test and see how the Apple devices stack up
Either way, this is the result on a Poco F1 64GB model formatted to F2FS
Seq read 151.4MB/s
Seq write 662.8MB/s
Rnd read 25.6MB/s
Rnd write 15.36MB/s
Erofs is only for the system partition and it's as bad as zram, you are using cpu cycle for compressing and decompressing stuff while storage isn't that expensive and there is plenty of it available on most flagships.
It would have been interesting to see how ram usage varies with Samsung Dex, I use it frequently.
Gary:
If possible can we see a battery drain test on .......
P30 Pro Kirin 980 vs
S10+ Exynos 9820 vs

Going back to storage it is not always about filling up your device , it is also about having ample Storage so you never have to worry about filling it up ,
Or almost never having to use cloud for uploading and re downloading your pics which imo is an added security benefit and data benefit .
Sure you can get by , and you do not need to have all that ram or storage , but it is nice to have .
Also throwing a big file , say a photo or video session by using your sd card from your phone into your computer via an sd card reader is still quite fast and a no fuss way of transferring large files.

I agree! 😁
That extra amount of storage isn't needed and extra ram because I upgrade every year. Anyway, amazing video Gary! The master teacher ! my s10+ is doing amazing
Got mine with a micro SD card of 400 gigs...I really have no idea what else to put there...
God's phone number
What I'm interested in is, if there is a difference between the different models concerning speeds and usage of the ram and rom. For example if the 1TB Model might be faster then the 256GB model. But great Video ^^
Did the phones and the SSD have the same file system?
Skipping all those games would the 12 gig work the best with DeX and business apps ?
I am going to be making a video about the S10+ with DeX very soon.
Great review - it's a shame you didn't factor in the use of DEX into the review i.e. in terms of stress and usability...
Lucky for us that this video is free
Can you do a speed benchmarking between different SD cards? That would be interesting.
Video title isn't as attractive as the video itself. This video is awesome.
I'm a storage freak I filled my 128 GB in just 1 week I'd love the 1TB I got a 512 GB and it's almost full
1 week that's a lotta porn
Tnx for amazing video .
Can you make a video explaining how flash memory works pls
Soooo what happened was, you paid attention in class while I was passing notes between friends and talking. I need you to tell me in kindergarten words wth your saying.
Why do you think that because it has 1TB of internal storage that the read/write should be slower?
PS. Also it wouldn't "made more sense to take out the s10 plus 1tb" since the video was about that device, even says so in the title.
Hi @garry, you've really being a great tutor, learnt a lot from your videos and making know more about smartphones, not just buying a smartphone but buying with sense and reason , thanks once again garry
I have the Insta360 OneX and it records 5.7k 360 videos. It easily generates around 32GB worth of 360 videos on an hour session. It could easily fill 1TB of my phone storage in a single travel vacation. I just realized that a 128GB storage is a joke now when it comes to modern media.
I don't get. Can someone explain it to me please? Why did it kill an app when it still had like 3gb of available ram?
