Didn't the tribe hate outsiders due to them picking up an illness that really hurt them in the past? Because they were so remote their immune systems hadn't been exposed to the same diseases as us. Truly an insane story!
I looked into it a very small bit in the past, and I’m not 100% sure of any of this so do your own research, but it was an overtime build up of negative interactions with the outside world that led to them wishing to isolate themselves. We have never directly caused them an epidemic from exposure due to how little contact we have truly made, but it is a possibility that furthers our reason to just let them be.
My boyfriend is born and raised Arizonan and he is terrified of skinwalkers. If someone whistles at night, he will refuse to be outside anymore. They are very very scary. The natives here swear they're real. The legends and stories are chilling. They lure you in with mimicking the sound/voice of someone/something you care about. Could be the sound of your family pet, most likely sounding injured, or could be the voice of your mother calling for you, even though you know she's not around. Whistling, especially at night, in the desert is supposed to attract them. Or if you hear whistling at night in the desert then that means there is one near. I spoke to an elder - who had the patience to entertain my “supernatural” folklore diatribe - about an abandoned coal mining town 30 minutes north of where I live. It was abandoned very suddenly during a particularly hard winter, and there’s been rumors of hauntings ever since. I asked her if there was anything there before the mining town that made it a rough settlement. She said “there’s a reason we [ancestors] never hunted ‘round there.
