Oh thank you thank you! Seams and weaving in are my sore spots but this really helped me work this tiny hat I'm making for my sister's stuffed toy. Now I might try a flat worked hat in earnest (I usually round knit) just to practice the seaming. You have a great teaching method.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the comment. Making stuffed toys are a lot of fun... no need to do a flat hat when you've got toys to keep you in seams.
I am a good knitter but I hate the sewing part because its ny Achilles heel. Subsequently I have lots of projects waiting to be sewn. Now I feel as if the light has gone on and I can go back and finish them beautifully. My deepest appreciation. .
If I do this on the right side rows of my hat, but then my brim is turned up, the brim shows the backside seam. To solve this problem- would I do the mattress seam with 2 different pieces of yarn, first doing the mattress stitch on the WRONG side (working from the cast-on brim up), then doing another mattress stitch on the RIGHT side of the hat, (from the top of the FOLDED brim on through the top)? My husband keeps his hat brims always upturned, so I have taken to using a sewn stitch in 3 or 4 place to keep it in place, but then that mattress seam always shows. Is there another way you can think of to not have the seam show on the upturned brim? Thanks again for such a clear concise explanation of this stitch!
Hello! You are absolutely right. If the brim of the hat is turned up, then the right side changes part way up the hat. I do just what you're describing, except that I still start at the bottom, with the hat "inside out" and seam the brim first. Then, I push the yarn needle through to the other side, turn the hat "right side out" and continue to seam up to the top. When you're done, and you fold the brim up, the seam will be inside the fold. Does that make sense?
How did you finish the top of the hat? Did you bind off the stitches? The patterns I've seen say to weave the yarn through the last few stitches and pull tight, then follow with the seam from the top down. If I use that technique with this approach, how do I secure the stitches at the top?
Sorry about the long delay in replying! This is an excellent question. I generally do what you've been instructed to do, which is to thread the remaining stitches onto the tail yarn with a wool needle and then pull tight. The trick is that, if you can, you should thread your yarn through the stitches one more time, to fill in the hole at the top and to make it more secure. Then you pull your tail into the inside of your hat (use your wool needle) and weave in the tail along the inside of the top of your hat. Weaving the end in keeps the stitches at the top secure.
Two things: 1) What stitch did you use for knitting the body of this hat? 2) Do you have a pattern for this hat? I have the hardest time calculating how many CO’s even when doing a sample swatch! 🤷♀️ BTW, This was an excellent teaching video!
Thank you, Joyce. The body of the hat is made in stockinette stitch (knit flat). There is a pattern for the hat. You can find it here: rivercityyarns.com/products/freepatterns?variant=31199614533705.
My Mom just passes away and she was the knitter, so I finished a ribbed hat, and it says to start at the top and sew down. Do you have a video on this, or do you do it the same way you are doing this hat? Please let me know. Thank you!
Well, making hats in the round means you don't have to seam, so that's a step you don't have to do. Mattress stitch is a handy technique for many things, though. Not just knitting! You can use it with crochet and on fabric as well.
Great question! You always seam with the right side facing, so I would seam up the main part of the hat just as I did in the video but leave a nice, long tail. Then, flip the hat inside out and use the rest of the tail to finish seaming the brim. When you fold up the brim, the seam will be "inside" (inside the fold).
Ah, I think what I was referring to is the knit stitches (on the facing out side) are purl stitches (on the facing in side). In this case, with the hat, by "other side", I mean the inside. Does that help?
Great question! If it's a striping yarn, you put your locking stitch markers or pins in to help you line up the stripes and then you seam (mattress stitch) the same way. If the stripes are mis-aligned, just pull back your seaming yarn and adjust the seam a little to get it more aligned. If it's a variegated yarn (just lots of colour), I just seam the same way (no special attempt to line things up.) Does that help?
Hi there. You will weave in both ends of your yarn (I used red yarn so that it will show up well for the video). Just use a wool needle to tuck each of the ends of your sewing yarn into the edge of the seam you've just created. I hope that helps!
I love what you do but I’m still having trouble so I’m going to bring all my slippers and maybe some one at river city yarns next Friday can show me great job
Hi Kenneth. Thank you for commenting on the video. Were you having trouble seeing the steps? Would you like to try this hat? We have a free pattern for it on our website here: rivercityyarns.com/collections/rcy-original-designs/products/freepatterns
Very clear instructions and a calm voice video with no background music. Thank you for showing me how.
Glad you liked it
This is one of the best how-to videos I've watched: gentle voice, no music, clear instructions. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Penny. I appreciate it!

Thank you Cynthia, what an excellent video. I echo @matchmother below. Quiet, unhurried video, no background music, clear, very helpful instructions.
Thank you so very much!
First time here, and I love your technique and also that you went straight to the instructions. No time wasted. Thank you very much.
Yay! So glad you liked it. Thank you for watching.
Brilliant tutorials Cynthia - well explained & easy to follow. Thank you

Thank you for this!! I had a pattern that called for making a hat not in the round and so I needed this resource.
I hope it was helpful!

I enjoyed your tutorial. Now I will be much more confident doing seams. Thanks.
You can do it!
I can't believe how iv learnt to seam my hat just be watching this video, thankyou.
Excellent! Seams are your friends. Keep it up!
Thank you….I have been doing this incorrectly…..now I might try a seamed sweater
Thank you for watching!
Thanks so much, just finishing a flat knitted hat and needed to know this 😊 Great video!
Glad it was helpful!
Yes!! Very informative. Thank you. I really need this coz I'm gonna be knitting a hat. Thanks and GOD BLESS
Glad it was helpful!
It is usually sewed up from the top down. I’m a nervous beginner but I have straight needle knitted a few hats. I will try this way next time
I think you can seam from the top down or the bottom up! It shouldn't matter. As long as you're happy with your finished result.
@@Yarniversity easy way for me! I am going to try this way.
Thanks & Take Care
Thank you for this, I just perfectly sealed my dad's beanie!! Before watching this, I had no idea what I was doing so my seams were terrible!
Glad I could help!
Thank you…I have been doing this incorrectly. Maybe I will now try a seamed sweater
Check out some of the great finishing classes we have, too, Pam. There's always more than one way to do something!
Great video! A lot of videos out there show only a few stitches and you're supposed to pick it up from that. Thanks.

Hi, what do u mean by u make use of a purl on one side and a knit on the other side because I see both sides are exactly the same?

What to do with the rest of the red string ? So it doesn’t come apart

Need to show this with a light color yarn. Can’t see the dark yarn.
Good point! It's one of our tutorial videos that is on the "redo" list.
