@@JohnSmith-pg9ns Yeah it's actually nothing to do with saliva, the whole gargling with water thing will in fact lead you astray. I actually learnt to do it with saliva and then later discovered that was wrong and had to relearn it. It's a vibration of the tongue at the back...like the tip of the tongue for Spanish but reversed. If you think about it, if you had to do it with saliva then with a slightly dry mouth you wouldn't be able to speak French, so clearly that's not how it's done. I can do it with a completely dry mouth.
Je ne connaissais pas l’expression « TY for sharing ». Pour moi, c’était « thanks for sharing » …(mais apparemment, les deux sont possibles… 🤔) PS : comme vous pouvez le constater, je suis française
I am lucky to be French by birth...You should know that French is hard for us to learn. We go through 5 grade levels (5 years) in primary school to learn conjugation and grammar. We spend 5 years learning French in primary school, not counting kindergarten (3 years). Then middle school (4 years) during which we continue to learn conjugation and grammar. So be patient and listen to the advice of this charming young lady. You will get there with a lot of practice. You should know that English is not easy to learn for French speakers either. The sound "r" does not exist in English so be patient and practise, practise, practise again and again !
Great advice. ❤ thank you because I'm black American and I get so frustrated with myself. 😅 in my mind natives come out the womb perfect french speakers 😅so thank you for giving me a realistic view of becoming fluent.
You have no idea how blessed you are! I’ve been trying to work on this sound, and once you started this video establishing that there are different sounds for /r/, I KNEW you were LEGIT! Thanks so much. God bless
Best explanation of how to pronounce a French r I have heard or found anywhere!. Most non-French French teachers and at least some French ones teach the r as pronoounced at the beginning of a word, tell us to drop r at the end of a word, and that's all. Yet anyone with functioning ears can hear that thethree different sounds, and I found immediately that I can't prounounce an r after a consonant in the same was as the r at the beginning followed by a vowel.Yet, no teacher I had would acknowledge that it was different. Thank you so much for clarifying this. It's so simple, as you explain it. Even though I can't pronounce any French r perfectly yet, you have shown us how to get it right! Merci beaucoup!
She's the only one that explained the different 'r's! So now I understand I have major trouble with r at the start. But in the middle and end is OK except for practice. Thank you
Pearl you are such a brilliant, creative and funny teacher! Your teaching style is by far the most practical and engaging that Ive come across! Thank you so much!
This video was very helpful, thank you! Because I'm English so these difficult pronunciations are very difficult. I was drinking water before you even recommended it and I was shocked at how much better I was pronouncing these words after drinking - it isn't something I realised until now. This video was so helpful!
My great grandfather was French. Been wanting to learn French for a long time now. And to start, I want to learn the R first! Seems like I need to wait a few more years before I could start!
I'm French-native: in Canada, we tend to pronounce our r like in Spanish: tongue trilling behind the front teeth. In France, they tend to do it from the throat.
Wow, you are a great teacher. Can't understand why you don't have more views! This was the first of your videos I have watched, but definitely not the last! Merci
Wow! didn't THANK YOU for this enormous tip "the creepy R" i had no clue at all. I was doing it totally wrong. Mercy beaucopu! The "R" in mercy is the creepy R also? Thank you so much! 💛💛💚💚🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
Bonjour Pearl, et merci beaucoup pour cette video très utile. I will feel much more confident when ordering vin rouge when |I visit France later this year. Votre videos have definitely improved ma prononciation. Merci encore.
First time viewing you and instantly subscribed-this was the most helpful French r video I’ve ever seen-and I’ve seen MANY! En plus, you had me cracking up with the gargling 😂. Thanks for this post!
This was so helpful, I have never really realised the difference between the three and wondered why every time I pronounced an /r/ at the end of a word it felt like it messed up the sense of whether the /r/ was at the end of one word or the beginning of the next. Now I see why! I was using the first /r/ for everything. Thank you!
was looking for an explanation video for a friend that is on day 1 of her french learning journey and ended up being something helpful for myself as well (we're not going to talk about how long i've been on this journey)

I agree😍
i just said this to myself haha!
Agreed. The most difficult pronunciation in French
totally agreed!
Took almost seven years of french here in the U.S. and no one ever told me about feeling it in your neck. Thanks so much!
I still can't do it. Sounds like you need a lot of saliva. My sound just comes out dry
@Sky The Potato let me know how it works out. I've seen some videos and they say something different. I think I'm a little bit better at it now though
