A friend of mine uses one of these FM Transmitters, which go into the 12V connector, also supporting Bluetooth. This might be an even more convenient/permanent solution
I've got a cheap one and it works really well, with excellent sound quality. I haven't used it for bluetooth as of yet, as I just have a flash drive of music plugged into it. You just have to pick a frequency with no interference. If you're reguarly travelling long distances, it would be a hassle having to change the frequency if you start getting interference from local FM stations, but there are some cheap ones which have an auto scan function which will automatically find a suitable frequency.

The soldering iron and opening the radio up method deserves some credit however for the improvement in sound quality over the cassette adapters. I've done a considerable amount of 'hacking' stock radios, including making the original VFD display show mp3 song titles, etc, but piping bluetooth audio into the amplifier directly is one of the easier ones you can do - no shame in learning a little electronics hacking!
I bought one of those on Amazon a few years back. It has a really nice feature in that the remote that hangs out of the tape deck also doubles as a charging cable, so I can charge it while driving. The downside is that there’s a loose connection inside somewhere, because I lose the right channel intermittently. Makes my 80s thrash metal much less fun.

That is pretty cool. Lol "listening to the radio sucks" I definitely agree with you, Winston! Anyways, I use what's called a Bluetooth FM transmitter. Not sure if you heard of that before, but you plug it into the cigarette lighter and it broadcasts your phone's audio over Bluetooth via FM signals. For that reason, the sound can be unclear at times, but it still works for me. Anyway, I literally just came across your channel, and I gotta say, it's exactly what I needed amidst this pandemic. Thank you so much for producing wholesome content, and I hope you have a great one! Keep it up
I have a 1991 Mazda Mx3 ive had 3 actually. The Bluetooth headset i have is getting old but is my favorite thing to work on as every year my subwoofer shakes a wore loose and i pull it out and tape the wires up but its part if the fun. But having UA-cam premium i get the music amd it will download about 20 gigs of music i have on playlists which is great as my family lives in rural areas outside of cell range i love it. I also have sony explode 6x9's in the back with a amp and a nothing fancy subwoofer but its just nice to drive and have tunes :) makes life great to have a sunny day and dirt road
I drive an 85 Mercedes Benz 500 SEC and had the original Becker tape deck/radio rebuilt by Becker to add an aux input for my phone, iPod, etc. I could have chosen Bluetooth over the aux, but really liked the idea of quality hard wired audio. Now I kind of wish I had them convert for Bluetooth. Oh well. Eventually I will rebuild the sound from the ground up and yes, that means a new head unit. Fortunately there are a few units out there that have the 80's vibe and can even match the amber lighting of that time.
My wife bought an audio system to our sauna. It is ok, but it always does that unintelligible "bluetooth ready to play" sound ... when I select "mp3". It was p*ssing me off. Thanks to you I know where it comes from, it all makes sence now. Thank You.
Ive always liked cars, but never found a good spot to get into them so these videos are super entertaining and helpful. Looking forward to all the new vids.
Keeping the original radio also preserves its collectors value, hence why these bluetooth cassettes or the bluetooth FM receivers for the cigarette lighter plug are the best way.
C-Milk, did you have a "system" in your car growing up? I had 2x10 Rockford Fosgates, a 15 and a 1000 W Rockford Power amp. Ahh to be young again, and have no conceptualization of what balanced EQ sounds like.
A properly designed cassette adapter would use the winding mechanism to turn the thing on and off, maybe those exist, maybe not. I personally would find it very satisfying to hack old original radios to add BT and make it smooth and invisible, but that's just because I am maker and i am very comfortable with electronics. Your advice is very sensible for everyone else.
The other option is to have a similar BT input system, but one that is a low power FM transmitter. Then you just find a frequency that is free and transmit on it while setting your car radio to receive on this frequency. Upsides include universality (works with any FM capable system), better sound quality (C-cassettes are far worse than static-free FM stereo, doubly so with aged read head on the player) and the fact that most of them will also feature a couple of USB out charger ports. Downside is that those usually require more power than a small internal battery could provide, so you have to plug it into 12V mains on your car. And they cost next to nothing. You can find good examples for 10-20 USD on amazon. Just type "bluetooth FM transmitter" into search.
There are a ton of FM transmitters you can by with great noise reduction that allow you to connect and charge one or two devices at a time, including usb sticks loaded with music and also act as a handsfree kit for phone calls. You don't need to charge them and they plug into a 12v socket.
I've always just gone the aftermarket head unit route. One car I did keep the stock cassette deck for a few years, until cassette functionality stopped working, should have went aftermarket sooner. Usually most cars have readily available harness adapters for $10 or so. I honestly don't like bluetooth and prefer to just have the mega flash drive full of music. I also have aftermarket head units I got 10 years ago that are still relevant today, with iPhone control, mp3 playback, HD Radio, etc. The one I got 10 years ago has been in 4 cars. Either keep the stock head unit to put back in the car when you sell it, or in some cases on old cars the stock head units are $100+ on ebay now. I even sold a lowly 1990s Nissan stock radio for $20 on ebay.
I've used a simple FM transmitter (not one of the flashy and ugly looking ones) and it works better than the casette adapter. No wear on the casette deck (and for when yours isn't working at all).

Good to know they make bluetooth versions of these, though. My dad is fixing up an '04 that has a tape deck or CD player but no aux input or bluetooth so he'd probably like this. Before this I had only seen a product that broadcasts a short range radio signal - you set the device to a frequency while it's plugged into your phone/mp3 player, then you set your car radio to the same one, and the audio plays through your radio.... until you drive through some area that actually has a radio station on that signal, anyway.
0:38 Oh man! I actually had an MC with Beach Boys music. Like, bought! 😃 (I had to when I encountered "I Get Around" in Flight of the Navigator.) 3:19 Those adapters would only feel really oldschool and rad if they had a tape moving that was being magnetized in realtime. 😎 5:24 I also got 6x9 in my car, and audio snobs would probably mock that format, but mine are not Sony Xplode but German Maestro. 😎 And as is soooo annoyingly often the case, you have to decide which downsides to accept for the upsides. (convenience vs. quality would be an easy choice if they didn't make the on/off extra-tedious) Sadly, if you found and bought one of those things for $100, it could still be crap. Price is a factor, but not a reliable guideline. 10:10 When I got a stereo for SD card, I should have gotten a Kenwood, but got a Pioneer because the features sounded better, but turns out the seek times are awful. And it has a rattling frame. Lots of money and effort for a disappointing result. - Also, my old Kenwood had a bezel that slowly motorically turned around so it looked like there is no stereo installed. That was so awesome. - One time a work collegue got into the car with me and was like: "No radio?" I said: "Nah." and then turned the ingition key and he was like: "WOAH!". 😄
About the seek times: damn! I had a cheap SD/pendrive chinese stereo. When it had over 700, up to 1400 songs (or files, just putting the every day pendrive with files and 10 MP3 was slow AF) it went at 1 sec to skip with 700 and about 3 or more to skip with 1400 files. So I used a 4 Gb pen with just over 2.5 Gb of music, give or take, so the performance wasn't too bad. I always thought the problem was that the stereo was cheap chinese crap... turns out even a Pioneer performs like that. Good to know! Probably has to do with pendrive's file system and low amount of memory in the stereo to cache the file table... I tried formatting it as NTFS and DAMN! Seek times where over 5 secs, unbearable. Went back to FAT32.
@@Ktulu789 I got a Philips pocket MP3 player that also takes a long time to initialize (unlike an old Trekstor), and I am pretty sure that's the tag scan, and since I prefer to organize by file name, it really bothers me that I cannot tell it to just not scan for tags.
The bad bit on those is heat and cold will drain a battery so you can't leave those sitting in your cassette deck on hot days or cold nights. If I had a classic I'd get the stock tuner modded for bluetooth.
I remember a road trip with my best friend in high school in his first car an old civic we found at byway i think it was called a store chain that used to be in Canada like giant Tiger anyways we found a Dr. Dre 2001 and it made our trip... Still a classic album.
Wow amazing guys this os such a good channel helps alot i dont have to spend hours going around looking for other videos, I really enjoy yours! Thanks alot and keep up the excellent job!💪🔥
If I'm not mistaken you can as a last resort get a "Parrot" a device you plug into your cigarette lighter. It's an Mp3 player and charger. I'm sure you know about those in case no one else does ijs.
Or you can skip that too and get the little FM transceiver that you plug into a cigarette lighter then tune your radio into a specific frequency. They are like 15 to 20 bucks. Problem solved.
*_Winston. Plzzzzz. Lose the funeral suit. You told us why you wear it but your such an interesting dude the at this stage your the weird guy in China with the suit on. Love ye bro. Amazing new channel. This will be TV material_*
P.s. I built one of these as a kid (wired, not blueteeth). Took a recording head out a duff cassette recorder and wired it to the cable. Simples. The good thing about these BT versions is, they should be able to apply equalization in the bluetooth DSP chip for better sound because the functionality is already there.
Get an fm transmitter for Bluetooth. There like $20 at Walmart. Their better they work off any static radio station. Sound almost perfect and they don’t use your tape deck.
3:13 totally makes it seem like an ad lol. Nah but for real I want to get an old car soon. I drive an 05 truck right now, it's old but not the type you want when it comes to old.
An ol' Dodge Dakota 4x4 with a broken electric motor for the 4x4, interior tore up, needs some other work but she runs would totally love to fix her up or have something better, will happen with time
There is even an easier and better way to have Bluetooth in your car with out physically install it, it's call "Transmitter FM". They're many brands and there for looks/designs of the transmitter, but I personally like Xiaomi Roidmi 3S FM transmitter. The transmitter it self looks like an ordinary cigarette charger, it may charge your device but after you pair it with your phone it will play the music of your choice via radio waves witch your radio will pic up do to the proximity between the devices.
A better way is to just buy a Cassette Adapter with a Aux cable and then buy a Bluetooth Receiver and plug the Aux cable from the Cassette Adapter into the Bluetooth Receiver that way you don't have to worry about always charging the Cassette but I recommend removing the battery from the Bluetooth Receiver so it doesn't leak or explode from being in your car in the heat and just plug it into a USB Port that way the Bluetooth Receiver always has power.
@@danmartin7823 I prefer the look of the original radios on these old cars, they were talking about the hack where you solder a bluetooth audio reciever's output to the casette tape's signal wires inside the radio and put an empty casette shell in the radio so it will turn on but play the bluetooth audio. Quite an easy way to upgrade old radios to bluetooth radio head and preserve the original look.

You two bear a startling resemblance to beavis and butthead, especially beavis with a touch of Winnie the Pooh.
Been the old 3.5mm to tape kits around for ages. Can just plug one into your phone directly and bypass Bluetooth and batteries.
I love the mascot shit talking. It's so funny.
Japan can do funny.
Not chyna
Bluetooth FM transmitter. Plugs into the 12 volt socket and connects to the phone and transmits to the radio.
CMilk needs a haircut. He beginning to look like Bobby Vinton. Great video guys.
i see you got my fire bird for a fixer up
Also i just bought an SA63 Celica, going to engine swap it and stuff, same rear as your supra.
Ok, im at the beginning of the video and the obvious answer is to just buy a bluetooth tape adapter. Its kind of funny you made a video on these. lol
So you're tellin me people in 80s cars have it better than I do with my 90s CD player
yep ;)
@@laowhy86 Great video mate. Do you have a similar solution for CD players? Thanks in advance
There are FM radio hacking solutions as well
I thought you where installing OBDII :P
On the Aluratec one, if that were me I'd cut a little hole and extend the button out on an extension :P
If I'm not mistaken you can as a last resort get a "Parrot" a device you plug into your cigarette lighter. It's an Mp3 player and charger. I'm sure you know about those in case no one else does ijs.
Mp3 players are passe. They were replaced with M4a ones years ago.
Much better sound quality.
Winston, C-Milk is right! You should totally listen to NPR!
Or you can skip that too and get the little FM transceiver that you plug into a cigarette lighter then tune your radio into a specific frequency. They are like 15 to 20 bucks. Problem solved.
I've already done this, not sure why I'm watching. Oh my solution as an extra step.
*_Winston. Plzzzzz. Lose the funeral suit. You told us why you wear it but your such an interesting dude the at this stage your the weird guy in China with the suit on. Love ye bro. Amazing new channel. This will be TV material_*
you can simply try an bluetooth fm modulator (there are non-intrusive built-in ones connecting behind your stereo to the antenna plugin).
i like the cigarette adapter ones
Winston: I don't like radio it full of adverts. me: youtube full of ads lol
That wonky head will definitely have an effect on the sound. See if you can fix it.
P.s. I built one of these as a kid (wired, not blueteeth). Took a recording head out a duff cassette recorder and wired it to the cable. Simples. The good thing about these BT versions is, they should be able to apply equalization in the bluetooth DSP chip for better sound because the functionality is already there.
91 formula with drum and bass hell ya
Wonder when will I able to buy something like this for CD player's! :D
Def prefer this to the 1st channel.
Get an fm transmitter for Bluetooth. There like $20 at Walmart. Their better they work off any static radio station. Sound almost perfect and they don’t use your tape deck.
i should get that for my honda so i can play kpop in it... was the one with the bent head the one with the wire?.. maybe you can bend it straight
3:13 totally makes it seem like an ad lol.
Nah but for real I want to get an old car soon. I drive an 05 truck right now, it's old but not the type you want when it comes to old.
An ol' Dodge Dakota 4x4 with a broken electric motor for the 4x4, interior tore up, needs some other work but she runs would totally love to fix her up or have something better, will happen with time
I really like small robot that speaks Japanese even tho he's kind of annoying, keep him featured in the videos please!
I'm pretty sure it's quite easy and relatively inexpensive just to replace the head unit. Been some time since i've done one though. ;-)
The whole point is that we want to keep the original aesthetic
"The bluetooth device is uh successfully connecktid." I giggle every time.
there are also bluetooth-radio transmitter for the 12v port
There is even an easier and better way to have Bluetooth in your car with out physically install it, it's call "Transmitter FM". They're many brands and there for looks/designs of the transmitter, but I personally like Xiaomi Roidmi 3S FM transmitter. The transmitter it self looks like an ordinary cigarette charger, it may charge your device but after you pair it with your phone it will play the music of your choice via radio waves witch your radio will pic up do to the proximity between the devices.
Can you please review the quality on new ones with Bluetooth 5.0
thumbs up for using a Pixel phone :)
You girls do good videos.
More Whips y’all!!!! Need more eps!!!
Cool segment !
Wow cool, what do you if your car has a CD player ?
I prefer soldering, but cheers anyway
Just use a wiring harness adapter, and then you can even swap the head unit back to stock, if need be.
@@danmartin7823 I prefer the look of the original radios on these old cars, they were talking about the hack where you solder a bluetooth audio reciever's output to the casette tape's signal wires inside the radio and put an empty casette shell in the radio so it will turn on but play the bluetooth audio. Quite an easy way to upgrade old radios to bluetooth radio head and preserve the original look.
i just use a cigarette lighter plugin thing who streams to radio.
Oh yeah Mp3 player too.
Cool, I am going to put back my original stereo on my truck k =)
good stuff guys.
stay safe.
Hey there guys hope y'all are well
U 2
China has officially trademarked the name Corona so the US now owes China an apology and 100.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.and the rights to all our cleaning supplies
My casset just has a head phone jack it plugs into my phone or Ipod and I can play anything that has a headphone jack, not to most elegant thing but it does the job.
Very interesting. I can use one of those.
This makes me want to buy the stock radio for my camaro. Too bad they are hard to find in decent condition
I can't keep up with how many channels these guys have
old school baby
Footloose is a pretty good movie soundtrack for the era. Kenny Loggins? Heck yeah.
Top Gun too with Danger Zone.
Was the Corvette a future episode spoiler?
