Written by Sandy Denny. Sandy was with The Strawbs briefly, then became the lead singer for Fairport Convention. I think this is one of our generation's greatest songs.
Judy's voice is ethereal but still Sandy Denny's version with Fairport Convention stands head and shoulders above the rest. But Judy's voice is stunning!
Great folk singer songwriter from the 60's-80's. She had a lot of hits such as "Chelsea Morning" (written by Joni Mitchell), "Turn! Turn! Turn!", "Send In The Clowns", "Michael From Mountains", "Bread & Rose", "Home Again" etc.
Fairport Convention epic. Sandy Denny vocal, Richard Thompson guitar + rest of talented British band (I don’t have other names on hand, sorry). I’ve seen Richard Thompson, live, three times, and he will still do this on occasion.
One of the best folk singers of the 1960’s and 1970’s!Judy’s voice is like a siren drawing us u dear her spell!Hari some of Judy’s best are Send In The Clowns, and Since You’ve Asked!
From Judy's 7th album, from 1968, "Who Knows WhereThe Time Goes" her song has been used in several movies and was the "B" side of "Both Sides Now". Her soaring soprano vocals, with a 3 octave range and impeccable clear diction, covers an eclectic repertoire of superior classics. The beautiful instrumentation and passionate lyrics, driven by Judy's phenomenal presentation makes this a perfect song. Before Leonard Cohen or Joni Mitchell had record contracts, Judy was instrumental in popularizing their songs and getting them out there. Beautiful lady and great political activist. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Mike. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
You must hear "Farewell to Tarwathie" from one of Judy's albums at about this same time. It features the actual recordings of the Humpback whale, in addition to her beautiful voice.
Michael - I have loved nearly every Judy Collins performance since she came onto the scene in the 1960s. Judy is a great singer, songwriter, and an iconic folk singer. Great submission and review. Thank you Harri and Michael.
Hi Dave, Thank you. Judy and Joni are my favorite female vocalists. 'Been listening to them all my life and never get tired of them. That's greatest and beautiful artistry! Stay well- Brooklyn Mike
This is an alternate version from the one on her album of the same name. If you like this, check out the version from the album. It was produced by Stephen Stills and he plays most of the instruments. It leaves this is the dust.
I must say that while I know that I've heard the song before but it has been quite some time...and I can't believe I forgot it! Such a beautiful and heartfelt expression! Such beauty and emotion! I love it all over again!....P.S. agree with the Jone Mitchell reference but I think her voice is even cleaner than Joni's.
Hi Debbie, I've been listening to this song for almost five decades and never get tired of it. That's a sign of beautiful artistry! Stay well. - Brooklyn Mike
Sandy Denny - what could have been. Her version with John Peel is still the transcendent version to me. It has that wild British top end voice. Fairport Convention the greatest folk rock band I think. Judy does a decent cover.
As always, where there is an Eva Cassidy version, it's highly recommended. As for Judy, most will recommend Send In The Clowns, but there are a couple of songs from that album that are significantly better. The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress (Sondheim) is magic in Collins' hands and Song For Duke, written about the funeral of Duke Ellington, is incredible.
Who knows where the time goes? Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving, But how can they know, it's time for them to go? Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming, I have no thought of time. For who knows, where the time goes? Who knows, where the time goes? Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving, Ah, but then you know, it's time for them to go, But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving, I do not count the time. For who knows, where the time goes? Who knows, where the time goes? And I am not alone, while my love is near me, I know it will be so, until it's time to go, So come the storms of winter, and then the birds in spring again, I have no fear of time. For who knows, how my love grows? And who knows, where the time goes?
I agree with you that Fairport's version is THE version but it wasn't original. The first one to be released was Sandy and the Strawbs I believe followed by Judy Collins version then Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny. It is a show-stopper of a song though.
I just checked in my Library. I have a copy of Sandy and the Strawbs "All Our Own Work" which I think is their complete works. It has 24btracks on it and two of these are "Who Knows Where the Time Goes."
Harri would you react to "Ophelia" by the Band...the live version from the Last Waltz Documentary. And would you do the same for "The Shape I'm In" live version by the Band from the Last Waltz. They are great and don't if anybody has ever been better live. Thanks Greg
This isn't even her best version. In her younger years, she was said to have the purest pitch in the business; but, then she "ruined it with drugs and alcohol" (her words, not mine). Have a listen to her 1968 version from her "Colors of the Day" album. As others have said, listen also to Dandy Denny's and Eva Cassidy's versions. I can't pick a favourite.
Have to disagree Harri, Judy hasn't got the perfect voice for this song. As great as this version is, it's the composer's Sandy Denny's song. Sandy's voice is lighter and it's her gossamer touch which makes her version(s) more wistful and her interpretation(s) more reflective. Try the Strawbs' version (1967) ua-cam.com/video/3ycaoV0WXfk/v-deo.html or The Fairport's (1969) ua-cam.com/video/OkOB57UcYk8/v-deo.html or solo on John Peel (BBC, 1973) ua-cam.com/video/jsqztvHIB9Y/v-deo.html

There is a Denny's restaurant down at the beach we call the sandy Denny. Maybe.
Big fan of Judy Collins but Sandy was the greatest ever.
The version of Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny is a must!
Judy's voice is ethereal but still Sandy Denny's version with Fairport Convention stands head and shoulders above the rest.
But Judy's voice is stunning!
Judy Collins was a very early interpreter of Joni Mitchel with a hit of "Both Sides Now" She was also the first to record Leonard Cohen
Judy, Joni and Joan....... Three angelic voices that will live long after we are gone ..... 🇺🇸❤️🇨🇦
Thank you.
This is my favorite version of the song. It creates beautiful natural landscapes in my mind.
Beautiful cover. The original was written by Fairport Convention, and sung by Sandy Denny.
Worth checking out.
Judy Collins' version of "Amazing Grace" is going to go straight to your soul
Love this

This song can make me weep when it catches me at the right moment. So wistful and beautiful and sad. It's on my final playlist. 💕
Fairport Convention epic.

Judy blue eyes.
Make that sweet Judy blue eyes.
Then make that
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.
Ask Stephen Stills.
@@Blue-qr7qe yep.

Love it 👍
Eva Cassidy did a phenomenal cover of this beautiful song ❤
Hi Mary, I never get tired of this record; it's part of my solo repertoire. Your synopsis is fantastic! Thank you and stay well. Brooklyn Mike
@michaelplotino7046 Hello Brooklyn Mike. Phenomenal choice, Judy's vocals are brilliant. Stay Well, my friend. 👍✌️🎶🇨🇦
@juliewhite7469 Hi Julie. Such a great song. ❤️
Hi Mary 💖 ! This almost made me cry 😥 , really tugs at the heart strings ❤️
There is a time or maybe two that we realize we are listening to musical gold! Me we always be able to recognize those times...Harri will help!
Never heard this.
But, I love it.
Judy is a real treasure. 😊

My fav!! Great song!
Great pick 👍
You MUST do Judy's Send in the Clowns!!! It's a beautiful song!!
Beautiful song thank you for the request Michael
First time hearing it
My Aunt loves Judy Collins and I must say I can see why
🎶✌️🎵💜
Richard Thompson on guitar with Sandy and Fairport Convention is magnificent. Hard to find a version with him on it.
Michael - I have loved nearly every Judy Collins performance since she came onto the scene in the 1960s. Judy is a great singer, songwriter, and an iconic folk singer. Great submission and review. Thank you Harri and Michael.

Wonderful song, great reaction! Thanks, Harri.
This was among the prize songs played at my wedding lo those many years ago. My how the time goes! Almost as quickly as wives! Such wisdom!
Hello Harri, Thank you for doing my request. I agree with you wholeheartedly: ethereal! Brooklyn Mike

Harri. I love your work and I hope to continue to see some more as time marches on...as it always does. Thanks so much Harri!
She is "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Stills & Nash. Stephen Stills love.
There’s a different version on her Who Knows Where the Time Goes album which, although this is great, I prefer.
Check Eva Cassidy's cover , equally amazing with Eva's distinctive sound. Great reaction ❤
Sandy Denny - what could have been. Her version with John Peel is still the transcendent version to me. It has that wild British top end voice.
Fairport Convention the greatest folk rock band I think. Judy does a decent cover.
Stephen Stills is playing guitar on this.
Take a listen to Cactus Tree by Joni Mitchell. Same kind of lovely vocals and poetry. One of my ATF frim her.
Try Judi with Boston Pops doing Send in the Clowns
As always, where there is an Eva Cassidy version, it's highly recommended.

Nice cover, but you need to react to the version from Fairport Convention, sung by the writer of the song Sandy Denny.
For me the original Fairport convention version is best. Also I've always felt Sandy Denny had a much better voice the Judy Collins.
I agree with you that Fairport's version is THE version but it wasn't original. The first one to be released was Sandy and the Strawbs I believe followed by Judy Collins version then Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny. It is a show-stopper of a song though.

Judy helped Leonard Cohen launch his career.
