J D. I have loved knots since I was a Sea Cadet at school. I 'invented' a knot to attach fine twine to my spectacles to hang them on my neck, but have never known if it had a name - now I know it's the poacher's knot! Thank you for your videos, I am now retired and rediscovering the joy of knots and ropework.
Thanks for letting me know this, the poachers makes and excellent slip knot. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated. Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?
Im a rock climber, and an amateur tree climber, and I use this knot every week! In fact not only do I use it, but it’s one of the relatively few knots I trust for life-support duties! Cheers
Critical friendship - don't repeat yourself so much (I'm not talking about reinforcement) and don't say "actually" and "basically" too often. Apart from that I've learnt a lot from your channel. Thanks.
Fantastic JD; I'm in love with knots since, slightly, before living on a sailboat -- six years ago. I now find your further explanations fantastic, to enlighten me on further, quicker methods of doing some knots -- brilliant!
There is an even faster way to tie the Poacher's Knot that I learned from a British climber. Hold the rope in your left hand, wrap the rope back over your index and middle finger two times, and then push a bight of the standing part through the two coils. It goes really fast. You can do the same with the scaffold knot except you wrap it three times.
Ah yes, one of my pride and joys. Made by a guy called PJ in the States, he made a few of my tools. Getting hold of decent made tools is not an easy task. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Hey Johnny, you have it right! Unfortunately, lots of people are confused about this and they call the Poacher's Knot the Scaffold Knot. And even worse, lots of people in the arborist community refer to the Poacher's Knot as the "Double Fisherman's Loop". This has really confused folks.
I do try to research my knots, so that when I post them I can give as much definition as possible............ oh and of course be correct!! The abuse if it is wrong, is sometimes overwhelming! Whenever, I see a knot that is wrong, I do try to politely pass on the information in comments. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated. Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?
I am a tree climber. I regularly use about 30 different knots in my work and I am somewhat of a stickler when it comes to calling knots by their correct names (if there is such a thing). The poacher's knot is one that I use on a regular basis, mainly to attach the end of the rope to a carabiner.
Very late to the party here (this video came up on my feed today) but I think the double fisherman’s knot is tied similarly but it’s used to attach two ends of rope together rather than on a bight like this knot. I could be wrong though, names are very much not my forte
Johnny Debt hello hope you are well. I only received the magnet yesterday so I can't wait to go out and try it if I get anything of interest I will keep you posted
Johnny Debt basically you get a powerful magnet (neodymium) a length of strong rope and go to a river, canal, pond throw in the magnet and see what comes out usually you can get modern coins, nails, some people on you tube have found safes, knives, guns. Hope this helps many thanks

Thanks for the vid. I like it. You requested comments: here they come! I'd appreciate it if you could include the pros and cons of the knots, e.g. after this knot has been tightened around an object, is it easy to release?Would you risk suspending your weight with this knot - or is it considered not safe enough? Can the loop be formed around an existing fixed point? Still a good, clear vid, though. Thanks again
Yes, I know what you are saying. In some videos I get criticised for rabbiting on too much. I have even been criticised for my accent, and also other things. I think what I may do in the future is do videos on the actual knots being used in action, where more information, as you mention above can be included. I was in no way criticizing anything you're doing -- you specifically asked for comments, I obliged. I'm a fledgling 'practical knotter'. Will be using knots for hammock camping and bushcraft (but a couple of decorative knots for playing with whist around the campfire sounds like a good idea, too.)

You need to use a Canadian jam knot/overhand knot beforehand on the paracord Dennis. It's a very effective snare that can be easily tied on any type of cord.

one of the knots I learned to tie as a kid was the hangmans noose and except for the technique I dont see any difference in the knot except for the number of wraps around the knot. I believe I read a few years ago that this was actually one of the strongest knots that exist in terms of breaking percentage strength. I'd like to see some discussion as to when more or less wraps are desired in the knot. ie scaffold, poachers and hangmans noose.
I have just done a search on ABoK and found these two drawings: Scaffold Knot: goo.gl/ZkeDoa Hangman's Noose: goo.gl/yw9Giw As you will see from that there is a difference in the way that each is tied. Although when completed they do look very similar. The other thing that I have found since starting this knotting journey, is that different knots have a different name depending on region or country. As for the strength of the knot, the only information that I have at present is this small chart: goo.gl/8Zn5vs Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.
This is very different from the hangman's noose. In the hangman's noose you wrap your coils around two bights, then you tuck your tag end in the loop of the upper bight, you don't run it down through the coils.
i always thought it was 13 turns for the hangman's noose so it broke the neck on the drop, and where the unlucky for some number 13 originated from. Either way the hangman's not is pretty unlucky anyway :o)
Estos nudos se conocen como el nudo de andamio y la soga de los cazadores furtivos. Puede que los conozca como algo diferente cuando se usa en un escenario de pesca.

that's another knot to add to the marlin spike hitch variations video, isn't it? it looks like it in the fast way part. Or like a double noose knot.

How about mentioning what the purpose of either knot might be?
I did put some factoids in the description. Plus Neil Water left and interesting comment.
4 turns - Hangman's noose, 3 turns - Scaffold knot, 2 turns - Poachers noose, 1 turn - Canadian Jam knot or slippery knot... I think lol
i always thought it was 13 turns for the hangman's noose so it broke the neck on the drop, and where the unlucky for some number 13 originated from. Either way the hangman's not is pretty unlucky anyway :o)
I just came to that same conclusion! And i would add: the fewer the turns, the easier it is to loosen.
So the fast method is just making a slipknot and then wrapping the loop through the overhand knot.
i prefer the first way
Very cool knot indeed Hey I got out a new vid
