I have one petite cat who is a bit of scaredy-cat, that is until she sees another cat out the window. I’ll never forget the first antagonizer she spotted. Our 100 lbs Lab made the mistake of going to see what all the fuss was about. At 8 lbs, that little growling ball of fluffed out fur stood on her back legs and pummelled the dog like a pro boxer in championship match. She didn’t scratch him or leave any marks, but years later he hides the moment she lets out a growl at the window.

My alpha is the only one allowed to wash all of the clan. No one is allowed to lick him. He is very old now - but every cat greets him head lowed for him to wash their heads. The alpha has a chosen successor, and all of the cats know it. It is interesting to see how this works. My cats all get along.

Thank you! I just discovered that my seemingly sweet and calm Ginger Giant has decided to be boss. His sister, a rather large Tortie has been acting as his wing girl. They've both lost bedroom access and are spending the night locked out on the sun porch. The other 5 are really loving it. The 2 trouble makers got so bad that poor Lynyrd blew out the screens just to escape. He never did tis in his 5 years.
There's one Alpha here and it has opposable thumbs.

I've had many boss cats and all of them have had wonderful temperaments. They kept the peace with no fighting. My boss cats could put everyone in line with a look or a simple meow. I think they learn from each other. The older cats have the others respect. They are amazing creatures.🐈❤️🐈‍⬛

I have an alpha girl. My very socialable/ loves to be the centre of attention/ especially with her human mum/ my black cat Stevie. There was a period of time she would assert herself on the others, pacing around almost, on the lookout keeping the others in line. She would be especially dominate for example, with her favourite spots/ ie: my bed. She would happily muscle her way in, jumping on any other cat that was already there, especially when I was there. Nowadays, all is pretty chilled, right down to a number of cats sleeping with me on the bed at the same time. As, like this video said, they've all shaken paws and know their place amongst the cat order, with only a rare event happening now. Fortunately Stevie has never shown open aggression, only asserting herself with the others, with happy equilibrium now ensuring with my 9. 🙂❤

I think the male is usually the alpha cat especially with you have siblings of the same litter but I never experienced any problems except he did mark the yard his yard and probably yards in the neighborhood. He did the same when we move but his sister always knew how to get around him. I love mine both equally . They had their tussles but never stayed mad maybe it was their personality. My female was the Queen and him the King. They mostly shared their feeding time together. They were the joy of my life and very special. I have own cats/kittens all my life but after losing them at almost age 17 and 18 years old I have been so afraid too get another cat or kitten. I miss terribly not having one but at almost 72 I worry what if I die what would happen. I can not be positive that my daughters would take my cat and love him or her. They keep me sane and bought so much love and joy to my soul. I miss and can remember all my sweet cats from childhood. I grieved a lot losing my 2 babies !

I'm in the same boat you are I'm 65. From June 2023 to June 2024 I had to put 3 cats down. The 1st was my 17 yr old MC. I dearly loved him. A month later a momma and 5 babies showed up at my door. I kept 2 and the others plus Mama found homes. At 5 months old one of the girls I adopted out got sick. It was FeLV. The owner contacted me to let me know about the outcome. I felt so bad that I had given away sick kittens 😢. I got my boys tested both were positive for FeLV 😢. They lived a good life. Fred was gone at 9 months and Arthur passed at 1 year. I'll not adopt another at this stage in life. I'm thinking about fostering but I'm just not ready yet and maybe never will be. It's so odd not having a meow in the house. I've had cats for 60 years. Thanks for listening..💙

@@catbb1000 I feel your heartache...I lost Baby2, who had FIV in March 2024 and Leah who had stomach cancer in May 2024... Still have precious Lulu with me.
My heartache doesn't go and only someone like you will understand how I feel.

I’m so sorry for your loss I’m 70 years old and have two cats left and when their time is up I won’t be getting any more pets. I’m on a small fixed income and vet bills really set me back. I’ve had cats all my life and it will be lonely when they’re gone.

I understand how you feel. It becomes a way of life to have cats.
Have you ever thought about fostering a kitten or cat? The joy of training a kitten that the shelter will place in a forever home is boundless! There are many old cats surrendered to shelters when parents pass. Adopt one not likely to outlive you. There is an organization called 'My Grandfather's Cat ' that can place in an emergency. ❤

That’s a great idea maybe for some but I know it wouldn’t work for me because I get attached to quick and the heartache of having to let go. I just couldn’t do that. Maybe someone else here can put your idea to work. 🤞🤞

My ginger male tries to be alpha cat, and my older feral female will hiss and run off if he gets too close to her, however the youngest female will play fight with him and she gives as good as she gets! He’s considerably larger than the two girls but they make it work. I am sometimes surprised to see the feral and the ginger grooming each other and will sometimes sleep side by side! 😮😊 🐈 🐈‍⬛

I have a black cat that came to my home. He was so skinny and not fixed.. I am hoping that that will help. I put a bell on him because he can become invisible. He is so affectionate more so then the 4 feral. Living in the country we see people abandoning cats. This cat is not feral. He is looking good and finding his place. Thanks for the info.

Thank you for recognizing the difference. Too many strays are being neglected as people call them feral, and disregard them causing the problem to go generational. There's a big difference. Thank you for saving that little stray cat.

I had a cat years ago that was very definitely an alpha, but he never seemed to feel the need to demonstrate his dominance- but I saw a number of large DOGS run away from him. He didn’t even have to growl or hiss.

It's important to remember that cats don't adhere to our human notions of gender. Females can be exhibit this behavior as well as males. We had a death in the family and added a large male to our three female household. One of our females didn't mix well with him, but because he was so big and we perceived him as the alpha, we thought he was instigating the fights. We paid attention long enough and realized our female was the aggressor!

I currently adopted a rambunctious 4 year old MaineCoon from a gentleman who had to move into assisted living. I have a large multicat household. A very affectionate young buck. He adapted quickly but has surely adopted the Alpha syndrome due to his size and robust personality. He doesn’t have any issue with any of the male cats. But he is relentless with the girls! He will run by and slap them every chance he gets. Not looking for a fight, but seeing who might be a good target for play! I have yet to solve this issue… a work in progress. But, in the meantime, he is driving the girls crazy!

My elderly cat has always wanted to be the alpha and was finally afforded that opportunity when his sisters passed away. Then I found a male kitten (5months) and he is super curious about my senior cat, Behr (16yrs old), but Behr is not having it and sends himself in to fits of yelling and asthma attacks so I put him in his room for peace but he’s resentful that he is sequestered to a room… is there any hope he will accept my kitten, who is very loving. 🤷🏽‍♀️

We got Ozy as a baby kitten in 2022 and had just adopted Castoria who was a bit over 1. At first it almost appeared like Castie was going to literally eat his baby head and kill him at times but now...oh yes, now - Ozy is a BIG boy and attacks HER!
I think Ozball has come into his own as the Alpha Cat in this house - and thanks to Castie , he's good at attacking her head!
