How Harley Quinn Became the Fourth Pillar of the DC Universe

- Originally appearing as a one-off sidekick to Batman’s great nemesis, the Joker, the character of Harley Quinn has since gone on to become one of comic books’ most popular and enduring characters.
After her first film appearance in 2016’s Suicide Squad as played by Margot Robbie, fans of Harley have had plenty of version of Harley to choose from over the last few years, but most notably in Robbie’s follow-up, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and in DC Universe’s animated streaming series, Harley Quinn.
Harley has become a character that can stand alongside DC's heaviest hitters, but how did she go from the Joker's henchwoman to a headliner in her own right? What makes a character like Harley so enduring? And how, as played by Margot Robbie and Kaley Cuoco, did she become one of the most interesting women in comic book media?

Thank you so much for making this. Someone who actually gets and understands Harley's importance in our modern pop culture climate that isn't tossed aside because "she's overexposed", "just a Deadpool clone", or any other jibber-jabber she gets for being such a massive icon. People will never understand, but they never cared to begin with.
You get a sub from me, and even a shoutout to this video for my own Harley Quinn vid/rant I'll be doing. Your video will help me plenty for sure.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Harley still feels like a character with a lot to say. Glad my video could help, looking forward to seeing yours.
There's a lot of borrowing or ripping off in comics Deadpool was Marvel ripping of Deathstroke so it's pointless to label anyone a rip off in comics or something inspired from Comics.
@Ricky Hunt Correct. Marvel and DC have been notorious for “ripping-off” characters from one another for ages. Deadpool isn’t even original when it comes to his 4th-wall-breaking either. People before him like She-Hulk and Ambush Bug have done so prior to his creation.

Birds of Prey was great I think people aren't thinking of Covids effect when we consider it's box office as it likely kept a lot of people from the movies including me I had plans to see it but wasn't going out in a crowded theater while a virus raged. Harley definitely deserves another chance at a movie.
This, and two other factors, like making the movie R-Rated even though Harley’s fandom is relatively on the younger side and not exactly 18+, and releasing it in February, which is like the worst time to ever release a movie, because Christmas holidays and Award shows just wrapped up, and people will most likely be back at work.
When I went to see it the theater was empty and the whole mall was a ghost town. Covid hadn't shutdown everything yet, but there was defiantly a feeling of impending doom.
harley quinn is just... she's just so...?? but no, seriously, she's basically carrying the dc universe as we speak
oh my goodness this deserves more views istg
I mean, I certainly won't argue with that, but my opinion is a little biased.
Hey! Came this way from Reddit, great video. I really like your style and am currently jumping through all your videos. Keep up the great work, for sure subscribing
Thank you very much, it's always appreciated!
Well damn, what a great analysis! I'm really enjoying your channel and appreciating your viewpoint.
Much appreciated!
The beauty of Harley is that she started out as what was supposed to be a one-off villain sidekick.
Also, Harley's actually coming back as a solo act in the upcoming "Batman: Caped Crusader" with a very different costume, demeanor, cultural identity, and even modus operandi. Indeed, the Joker won't even show up in the first season.
She'll be returning to her roots as a psychiatrist, serving as a shrink for Gotham's elite, but using the information she gets from them as a tool to serve her own purposes. She'll also be leaning more into "jester" rather than "clown", in that court jesters were the only people who could get away with insulting medieval royalty consequence-free. Apparently she'll also be Asian-American, but it sounds like it will just be an incidental thing.
Great Scott! Harley Quinn is DCEU's answer to Deadpool! 🔥🔥🔥🎉🎉🎉💋💋💋
This suddenly popped up in my recommendations. I hope it pops up in more people's rec soon.
