This is enlightening for non-muslims. Today the idea of a woman obeying her husband when she takes her marriage vows ( in the Christian faith) is an option. If one is under obligation to obey, 'breaking' a rule has consequences and carries risks, one being violent retaliation from an arrogant husband. Cut the idea of obedience out of marriage then there can be equality. I also think that women can deliver cruel words which can be as harmful to a man's self-esteem as any physical punche he might throw in his wife's direction!

@RockStudioLive You're absolutely correct, I am NOT an English scholar. In a clumsy way I was trying to point out how all writing changes with time. And especially Arabic. Early Arabic was written without vowels, and had no dots for letters which, without dots, look the same. The dots (and signs to indicate vowels) found in Arabic writing today are not found in early texts. This presents quite a dilemma to scholars trying to determine true meaning.

@kathyofrin Mohammed himself said exactly what hamza yusuf is saying. mohammed says in hadith that no muslim could hit his wife ever for any reason. there are many trained islamic scholars who say you cannot. Imam abu suud the grand mufti of sunnis 500 years ago gave the fetwa for sunni muslims from morocco to india that if a judge hears of a husband hurting his wife, the judge MUST stop the husband by all means possible. abu suud is one of the most respected muftis in the history of islam.

    Islam is an intellectual religion.
If someone explains something "wrong" in the Quran, then why can't you accept it based on the soundness of the argument
"Why is this even up for discussion?"
If you listened to what he is saying you would realize that he is making that exact point

@MrCalathea people translate for many reasons. the word in arabic in mecca in the time of mohammed [saws] never meant 'beat' it meant talk, walk, march, leave, and it meant make love or have sex. make a loud noise. it meant discuss. it meant to come to agreement by negotiation. the dutch translator just did not know. or did not want to know. most translations of quran are political. not scholarly. and few islamic scholars ever learn european languages.

"Quran is preserved in Arabic for a reason. No translation can be equivalent to the authentic words of the Quran." Ever tried to read Shakespeare in the original ancient English? Impossible to understand without a modern "translation" (explanantion). And Shakespeare was 100s of years after Muhammad. But u are correct in that English translations of Quran contain extra words to make it more "palatable".

In Islam only judges in a court can judge, and only the judge can give the death penalty or any penalty. The more someone threatens another Muslim, the more one proves one is not. Muslims are forbidden to harm other Muslims "Truly whoever believe, they who follow the Jewish religion, the Christians, the Sabeites, whoever at all who believes in God and the last day, and does good, will have their reward with their Lord, will know no fear, neither shall they be grieved. Surat ul Baqara

    Well said, all of it.
One must apply a human aspect to the Quran as well as every other religious testament. Maybe the Quran vouches for domestic violence but only after XYZ criteria are met. But as stated this is never how domestic violence occurs.
Watch your actions closely. Do they bring tears and negative energy to the world? Or do they encourage happiness and peacefulness. Surely no soul with a heart would wish the former upon those close to them. Discuss, consider, and respect.

what think ive notice is that if you learn Islam from its original sources, i.e. Quran and the Hadith of the prophe scw you know that Islam gives more rights to women than any othe religion, the rights women have in Islam is far greater than acutally potrayed. the west always shows how Muslim men opress their women, and if you go to these Muslim countries you will see. not in a huge scae, but women are been opressed by men, simply because these men are refusing women the rights...

If you go around killing people, there is a price to pay. If you break speed laws god doesn't repeal the laws of physics when you hit a tree. life does have consequences even for idiots.

@MrCalathea bad people read bad things into good words. in english for example there are words like "get" whose meaning changes each time it is used. get real, get the paper, get high, get around. get off, get it?, and the past tense of get is got but got introduces yet another set of meanings get doesn't have, he's got it, got the time? got to go, got me! so anybody translating got has to know the meaning. DARP almost never means hit, bvut intercourse, conversation, travel, leave. rarely"hit"

if we are all supposed to spend 20 years of our lives to be able to understand Quran, then how is Quran a clear guidance? Is not Quran for all of humanity? Why God would make it so difficult to understand his message? Does is mean we rely only on scholars and whatever scholars tell us we trust them?

    • @ThePlatineist
      @ThePlatineist 5 років тому

People are not dependent upon people for guidance. Guidance comes from Allah SwT. Do you know ayat al kursi? Don't be scared that people will mislead you, be hopeful God will help you.
At the end of the day there are multiple levels of understanding but every muslim needs to know the basics what to do to be eligible for Allah's mercy on the Day of Judgment.
Make sure you believe the 6 articles of Imaan and fulfill the 5 pillars of Islam and make sure to look to the prophey's example to see how he sallalahi alayhi wa sallam was as a person and how he dealt with peoplenand follow his example sws.
That is the core, there are outer layers that are only helpful if it deepens your imaan. If it doesn't benefit you it's not necessary to know your heart needs to be sincere. That's why we ask for beneficial knowledge (Allahuma inni asaluka 'ilman nafi'an wa rizqan tayyiban wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan) and not for more knowledge or all the knowledge. Only that we can handle and that we can use in practice.

Islam is against SPOUSE abuse. This should be elaborated upon.
Saying that Islam encourages wife beating is specious but unfortunately in vogue mostly because Islam is presented to the world poorly. The Messenger (p) has been accused of many things by detractors but never of beating his wives.

SHE complained to him about about her husband's impotency. she complained that HER sex was no good. SHE complained about satisfaction. the husband had children from his former wife. mohammed said the 2 children resembled the father like 2 crows. she didn't complain about being beaten. she said she wasn't getting good sex.

@malika810 nobody today can accurately translate Quran into modern Arabic either. Many meanings have been lost and in fact even people in Mecca and Medina were unclear about much of it and some of its meanings then even were hidden. Ya Sin or Elif Lam Min or Allah's "chair" or the "niche" words or phrases for which no language carries meaning. Because Allah doesn't sit down and heaven is not 3 dimensional. Allah says there are no comparisons. If there is a "throne" there is comparison.
