Reminds me of when Blackpink released their last album, they only did a few performances before they stopped promotions to prepare for their tour. Now we know why. Though I have a feeling with how times have changed, that the old way of promoting is not going to survive. New songs have to be released within weeks of each other. It sucks.

I didn't even think they were getting paid to be honest. The broadcast shows are promoting them very well. These shows are how you get to see idols perform at events outside of award shows that happen once a year. I have a genuine question why did people think idols were getting paid at all or a lot of money? Agencies have to pay for promotions, music shows are promotions the same way concept photos, pre-release singles, festivals, and tours are promotions. All of these activities cost money but if you put high quality work forward eventually the effort will pay off in forms of the group getting attention/reaching a bigger audience.
that's what i'm wondering too.. shouldn't it be obvious they don't get payed alot/at all for promotions? Like if you want to be on a show, you pay the show.. if the show wants you to be on the show, the show pays you.. and in the case of promotions the groups want to be on the show, they are paying the show for exposure.. how are people so surprised about this?
Funny, I was thinking along the same lines… do American celebrities get paid to be on talk shows? I always figured they paid the show so they can promote their new book, movie or album. Unless you’re huge famous like Michael Jackson probably.
Those channels like MBC, SBS etc needs to be seriously regulated...the audience pay to go there...that should fund the whole thing, that is how its normally done, the idols should not have to pay too, just creates more money in the channels pockets. I guess the industry is too heavily saturated now that idols literally pay to be one instead of getting paid
It’s the one thing that those music shows costs so much money, but they act really mafia like, like banning the whole groups of a label if not all groups want to promote. Thanks for your information, i didn’t know it was that extremely bad.

Getting paid 36$ - 44$ pay and divided into each member is crazy. And they need to pay the TV broadcast 50K USD for each live band performance is nuts too. These music shows know that it's the idols that need music shows more than the other way around.
hahaha, i am backreading the comments and found it funny , that some fans just found out about this, i don't know why, but its kind a simple why music shows are expensive first expense = Tax , broadcast station pays tax to the South Korean government, the bigger revenue the broadcast station has the higher the tax second expense = broadcast license, in order to watch it and air it, you need to pay a license to have rights to air it in South Korea third expense = Building Lease, i don't know about it, but most companies just lease the building for a certain number of years then they renew the lease if its up fourth expense = logistics, in order to for the production equipment to be delivered fifth expense = production equipment's, a studio equipment is different from a consumer equipment, fee is higher when using a commercial equipment's sixth expense = production crew, c'mon this is common sense, there a lot of employees in a broadcasting station, and they have salaries that put food on the table seventh expense = backstage crew, these are your make up artists, PA, etc.. they get payed too, every year these expense increase, kind of inflation what happens if one increase, it has domino effect on each expense, I'm pretty sure, employees get increase too every year, they are just not letting you know these expense could take millions, if there low advertisements on each program of the broadcasting station, where do they put the burden, that's right to the agencies of the artist, a deal will take place in order to get a slot on the show this in return will add on the expense of the agency, then the agency will surely discuss this with the artist's and put in contract if the artist signs, we are assuming they read the contract but this is where it gets sad, because for the artist's it will be a hit or miss, if the artist is gifted but presented with not so well composed music, this will have effect on the result if the artist got lucky with a nicely composed music but the artist did not do well, this will have effect on the result if everything comes into place, the artist will be lucky and be like BTS these are the expense in the background for fans, so support your biases, and buy their merchandise, as will help them lower their debts and encourage them to not loose hope for artist whoever is reading this, carefully select the choice of music you will use, because this will make or break your career, this will help your debt situation see yah! 😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
People are also starting to lose interest in music award shows, they used to be watched by general public but nowadays only fans of the groups that have a performance there watch it, and sometimes not even the entire thing of it, just the part where their faves is in. Not to mention idols (and most k-artists) now rarely appears in tv cable’s variety shows be it mbc, mnet, sbs, kbs or tvn. Most of them either starts a variety series on their youtube channel or a production team approach them to start a new channel.
I laugh a bit thinking why idols cry when they get their win. It's because they have to treat producers/people to dinner with their profit of only $36 while spending $7000 Maybe that is the reason why, some idol groups are going global having foreign members so they could gather more fans from their foreign members' country.
I always miss my favorite groups once they start gaining recognition. I am happy for them though, I get to see them less but at least they get paid more and have a better quality of life. I'm happy mamamoo promotions have slowed down and they are now focusing on their individual brands and music. I know I will see them perform again in a bigger stage one day and that makes it all worth the wait
These 50000 Won ($36) is more likely getting a discount for their food, drink and transportation expenses for the day. In reality, groups and companies pay a LOT more than the 10 Mil Won (around $7000) per week expenses mentioned here, to appear on variety, reality and radio shows as promotion. The music shows are a gateway to the the rest of the TV world for idols and groups. And to their survival. So they're getting paid a lot of money for the privilege.
yet everyone especially knets still bash idols heavily for the smallest things and still not give a damn what these idols have to go through just for your enjoyment
4:19 This sounds so much like what happened when the radio was still going strong in America, and bands had to promote their music on the airwaves. You should watch Rick Beato's video to learn about this
The main problem with the industry is that it's OVERPOPULATED!!! Instead of introducing dozens of new groups back to back, just focus on the existing ones and their well-being plus success. This is the real problem in my opinion. It's creating unnecessary competition too. What's healthy about that? They're mentally and physically abused.
@@ryunekoyashiki yup, them being streamers/content creators and them making the band, not the company making them. They probably have a different perspective and rather follow the modern/new pathways than the ways of big ent companies.
In this day and age that give ain't worth the take. I agree with why idols company would NOT think it worth it as THEY already put in 1000s *actually moving with the cost of the worlds inflation* more for their groups to create in general. I will always stand with the artist getting paid and exposed the BEST way for THE ARTIST. A music show can turn real exploitative for the talented, young, and determined artists willing do anything for their shot💔
While it is a benefit, especially for lesser known idols, it seems like a scam by the broadcast companies taking advantage despite the low viewership due to viewers changing the way they consume media. Hopefully something new arises that'll get nugus the exposure they need, while also not being so demanding physically and monetary.
The 2nd thing is because usually only the rookies or the less popular groups are placed in the first 30mins of a music show or first 1 hour..a lot of viewers dun even tune in to the show for the first 30mins or 1 hour ..so all the effort spent performing and recording is wasted..
They don't appreciate their Idols enough and they always take them for granted especially BTS, it's no wonder they prefer international shows which is more better for them and is more lucrative than it is in their home, which they deserve every penny, they work very hard for it
BTS also got disrespected a lot on Korean shows in the past. Also they are not an average K-pop group, there global superstars so it makes sense for them to perform more on the international stage than in their home country
if it really was that expensive to promote groups with many members then we should be seeing a downward trend in # of members in these new groups. but as u can see like Illit and Baby monster they have 5 and 7 respectively. so it seems like many members isnt the problem and its still affordable.

Kpop is all about the producers, paying for exposure, and hard work, and back room deals.. And so many groups never make it, only a few that debut each year.
poor small groups this must be so hard for them .. performing in music shows is the only way they can get known .. but they coast so much money ... a lot of nugu groups can't even afford to be in these shows ..
I feel bad, but wonder why they don’t do another job.
Only imagine you are in a rookie group and you win , not only you spend around $7000 now you have to invite everyone for dinner…..and we wander why sometimes during concerts or presentations the idols cry 😢
Or if u from small known company
The same thing happened to monsta x when they didn’t want declined kingdom so mnet banned all starship artists from appearing on their network back in 2021
Monsta X was supposed to be on Kingdom?
@@furuyakeifu yes back in 2021 and mnet tried to deny that they don’t have beef with sse but every fandom noticed that they never invited any sse artists to their shows the whole year
Yeah no wonder Ive started going on Mcountdown during I AM era right?
Totally fine that idols don't waste their time with this. I remember being rather upset that Soojin wasn't performing on any of these shows, but financially it was probably in both her & her companies best interest that they didn't.
thats why some well known Idol group now prefer hold a concert abroad than promoting at music show, and lots of fans complained 😅
Music show at korea is all about charts, youtube views, online streaming, album selling.
Like Twice or Itzy, knetz said they flopped at Korea but we know they made big money from their recent world tour concert.
so many kpop stans don't know that concerts is the biggest $$$ source lol
i knew most of this but didnt know it tied in with the variety shows. 15 years ago me and my friend use to say being an idol is very hard.
No wonder certain group or kpop idols comeback single/album,they just promote for one week only
Jisoo said that she will perform at inkigayo asa gift for fans
Ngl but only $36 for ONE group!!!!???? What are they playing at?
Well they go there to promote their song and hopefully make money through that that exposure?
Very informative video. Always wondered how they balanced the prerecording aspect with the live broadcast portion. Now we know, they wait around all day. Also, having to treat the producers to dinner if you win first place? That should definitely be banned. But now we know why the big groups sometimes don’t show. Reminds me of when Blackpink released their last album, they only did a few performances before they stopped promotions to prepare for their tour. Now we know why. People blamed YG for not allowing the girls to promote more. But if you think about it, they were protecting them. Why exhaust them when they had nothing to gain by promoting nonstop on those shows, whereas they were making millions off of their tour. Anybody could see which is the smarter investment of time and energy.
It's funny because I.U asking EXO's D.O. if he was going to do music shows and he said no made me laugh because I bet you his solo fans blamed SM for not letting him due them for his last two album. But now as the CEO of his own company and him not doing any of them shows it was probably him asking SM not to send him to them and not the company sabotaging an avenue of promotion
People only see the glitters of idol life they dont know the dark background and hard work they do
5:26 that's a sacrifice 😢
Many 2nd gen artists had a really rough time getting money. It wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine for them.
exactly lol
There’s still groups like that today they’re just from smaller companies
My heart goes to all these wonderful idols. Hopefully, one day things will change and receive what they deserve. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻.
what the- ,,,, I am still so shocked wtf 😲😳 thank you so much for all of this information again & again!!
Wowwww. The snsd story is CRAZYYY
I’m hella early. They gotta pay them more for singing and dancing their heart out 😭
They are two many rules
It better to do it yourself
I miss the old days😢
With EVERGLOW announcing their long-awaited comeback with a release 'ZOMBIE' dated for June 10th I hope they promote more than a week.
A week of promotions seems enough under these circumstances
That's why Sakura doesn’t care 😂😂😂
What 😭
?
What gets me is if the idol companies are paying all the expenses, and have no rights to any profits. Why am I sitting around watching ads on voting apps in order to vote? Where is that revenue going? What a scam.
But I feel like all groups should perform. Like do as many music shows as you want but atleast perform 3 times
Then pay them properly
i work with a lot of big companies this is commonly what they do it is so disgusting 😭😭
Charging 7000 dollars is perfectly fair. Do you understand how many staff have to be paid to work and move heavy equipment, security, catering, audio/video,lighting,monitoring etc. so many people need to be paid for their hard work.
Yes, but paying idols 36$ in return is absolutely not fair.
@@henrymarenth8645 The thing is, they don't have to be paid at all. Idols companies are paying that large fee to go someone else's broadcasting studio , where they are providing idols catering, room, security, and air time for them to promote a song. Thats like paying to use someone's toilet, then in return they pay you for flushing. Which they don't have to do because it's a service you paid for. It's a small incentive
Honestly, the old way of promotion is still something I’m more used to. Might be because I’ve been a fan since 2011, but the promotion should last way longer. Though I have a feeling with how times have changed, that the old way of promoting is not going to survive. New songs have to be released within weeks of each other. It sucks.
I think the only main award show idols go to is MAMA because it’s like the Grammys to them
But isn't that an award show?? I thought they meant music shows like music core and m countdown because they promote their comeback there. they perform on award shows like MAMA too but they are there mainly for the award ceremony.
MAMA isn't a Music show.. It's the in qoutes "most prestigious award show in Asia"
@@shorya1471 yeah sorry I didn’t mean music show
@@yasminchan7425 yeah I didn’t mean music show sorry
@@yasminchan7425 its a quote for them but it's not the most prestigious award show in ASIA, I have been watching that since 2nd generation and MAMA barely included all of Asia.
It's basically an award show for Koreans and with some inclusion of other regions in Asia, it's a faulty show and people are now seeing how kpop itself has issues with its system.
Treating the producers and staff after winning 1st is fking ridiculous 💀
Yeah! This is the part fans don't really see and know they just yap and yap not knowing what is going on behind the scenes. 😅
This explains everything
I always get excited to watch music bank on fridays
Only naturally talented should be in kpop.
Imagine being in a 9 member group being paid 36$😭😭😭😭.
you'd get paid $4💀
24 members* 😂
the first group I thought of were seventeen
@@vixarts4114 tripleS right now 😭😭😭😭
Nct with 26 members imagine when all of them come together after their military period is over to do a year end group performance
My idol is blocked since 2010 so I wouldn't know what it feels to have your idol on music shows. Last time I saw him promote was on 2009. I was 19 and he was 23🤷🏻♀️
Amazing Information
interesting video... how do some idols survive is a mistery
All I'm thinking about is how is TripleS handling this 😳
because music show now are..rigged...🤭🤭
For sure, the amount of win for rookie groups from big companies is insane
I was sad Kyungsoo wasn't promoting on music shows but now I'm glas
Ok. As a international fan, This vid was vary informative eye and opening. I like knowing some of the industry info that might be common knowledge to some but is new info to me
why the kpop world like so complicated, plus the voting, just keeping us so busy
Getting paid 36$ - 44$ pay and divided into each member is crazy. And they need to pay the TV broadcast 50K USD for each live band performance is nuts too.
These music shows know that it's the idols that need music shows more than the other way around.
Let’s not forget, smaller company groups also have shorter performances or performances cut If their popularity isn’t high enough.
Don't forget that often time those groups from small companies don't even get slot to perform in the music shows😢
I remember when they used to cut Ateez performances back when they were rookies.
hahaha, i am backreading the comments and found it funny , that some fans just found out about this, i don't know why, but its kind a simple why music shows are expensive
first expense = Tax , broadcast station pays tax to the South Korean government, the bigger revenue the broadcast station has the higher the tax
second expense = broadcast license, in order to watch it and air it, you need to pay a license to have rights to air it in South Korea
third expense = Building Lease, i don't know about it, but most companies just lease the building for a certain number of years then they renew the lease if its up
fourth expense = logistics, in order to for the production equipment to be delivered
fifth expense = production equipment's, a studio equipment is different from a consumer equipment, fee is higher when using a commercial equipment's
sixth expense = production crew, c'mon this is common sense, there a lot of employees in a broadcasting station, and they have salaries that put food on the table
seventh expense = backstage crew, these are your make up artists, PA, etc.. they get payed too,
every year these expense increase, kind of inflation
what happens if one increase, it has domino effect on each expense, I'm pretty sure, employees get increase too every year, they are just not letting you know
these expense could take millions, if there low advertisements on each program of the broadcasting station, where do they put the burden,
that's right to the agencies of the artist,
a deal will take place in order to get a slot on the show
this in return will add on the expense of the agency, then the agency will surely discuss this with the artist's and put in contract
if the artist signs, we are assuming they read the contract
but this is where it gets sad, because for the artist's it will be a hit or miss,
if the artist is gifted but presented with not so well composed music, this will have effect on the result
if the artist got lucky with a nicely composed music but the artist did not do well, this will have effect on the result
if everything comes into place, the artist will be lucky and be like BTS
these are the expense in the background
for fans, so support your biases, and buy their merchandise, as will help them lower their debts and encourage them to not loose hope
for artist whoever is reading this, carefully select the choice of music you will use, because this will make or break your career, this will help your debt situation
see yah!
😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
Even SKZ seems to have shortened since they’ve started.
Damnnn maybe companies should focus on touring but then popularity & $$$ is needed 😢 what can even be done about this?
This is so complicated
Hanse always being real about stuff tho-
en découvrant ca, je me demande comment se passe la KCON qui passe dans tout les pays pour les artistes ?
Poor tripleS
Watching this and knowing SeoAh is the youngest paid idol in the 5th generation 🎉🎉
It's because they have to treat producers/people to dinner with their profit of only $36 while spending $7000
Maybe that is the reason why, some idol groups are going global having foreign members so they could gather more fans from their foreign members' country.
Still better rates than Spotify.
one more thing Music show easy to get Rigged by some agency who have share stock with that music show 🤷
I always miss my favorite groups once they start gaining recognition. I am happy for them though, I get to see them less but at least they get paid more and have a better quality of life. I'm happy mamamoo promotions have slowed down and they are now focusing on their individual brands and music. I know I will see them perform again in a bigger stage one day and that makes it all worth the wait
I didnt know they paid for live interviews. I finally learned something from these vids. thx
No wonder idols and some entertainment companies go under financially. Greedy Directors needs to stop using their powers over these music shows 🌏
Now i know why inkigayo YG videos are posted on the artists offical channel 90% of the time
It makes me sense. True. 😮
The camera work is terrible now too.
4:19 This sounds so much like what happened when the radio was still going strong in America, and bands had to promote their music on the airwaves. You should watch Rick Beato's video to learn about this
imagine how MARK & HAECHAN does it all
The main problem with the industry is that it's OVERPOPULATED!!! Instead of introducing dozens of new groups back to back, just focus on the existing ones and their well-being plus success. This is the real problem in my opinion. It's creating unnecessary competition too. What's healthy about that? They're mentally and physically abused.
no wonder QWER and Rolling Quartz never promote on music shows 😌
QWER is totally different case
@@PeataPoeet is it the way they put together ??
@@ryunekoyashiki yup, them being streamers/content creators and them making the band, not the company making them. They probably have a different perspective and rather follow the modern/new pathways than the ways of big ent companies.
@@PeataPoeet yeahh their ceo is egg kim...he will do the unorthodox way hehehe
In this day and age that give ain't worth the take. I agree with why idols company would NOT think it worth it as THEY already put in 1000s *actually moving with the cost of the worlds inflation* more for their groups to create in general. I will always stand with the artist getting paid and exposed the BEST way for THE ARTIST. A music show can turn real exploitative for the talented, young, and determined artists willing do anything for their shot💔
While it is a benefit, especially for lesser known idols, it seems like a scam by the broadcast companies taking advantage despite the low viewership due to viewers changing the way they consume media. Hopefully something new arises that'll get nugus the exposure they need, while also not being so demanding physically and monetary.
that's so sad😢
IVE double title tracks comeback but Accendio ended with only one week promotion😭no stage sets too😭
The 2nd thing is because usually only the rookies or the less popular groups are placed in the first 30mins of a music show or first 1 hour..a lot of viewers dun even tune in to the show for the first 30mins or 1 hour ..so all the effort spent performing and recording is wasted..
I don't understand why ppl want to be idols
It’s just not worth it anymore.
