    I DID IT. I DID IT. I DID IT !!!! Thank you God. I bought a DR350 se brand new in 1996 from a dealer for 3700. That was 27 years ago. I just hit 33,000 miles on it and turned 65!!! I never did anything to it. Nothing. just oil, chain, tires. I've had so much fun on it for so long. And every time I've pressed the magic button it has started. Every time for 27 frigging years !!! It is by far the best thing I have ever bought IN MY WHOLE LIFE. I swear to God. I'm crying now because I did it. I did it man. It's 24,000 miles to go around the earth and I did way more than that on all the trails around my home, mining for gold from the California Gold Rush. I know every trail. All the roads. I had so much fun. I say had because I just can't pick it up anymore. I'm gonna have to sell it. Hurts to say it. But DAMN !! Thank You SUZUKI FOR THE RIDE !!!!!!

    Love my DR350SE! I have had it for about 6 years now and it's been very reliable. One thing to note, the last year of the DR350 was 1999. On the 1999 street model, it does come with the suspension from the dirt model (adjustable dampening/rebound). Also, on the E start bikes, you can also add a kick start so you have both. I have the 1999 DR350SE and swapped it to a pumper carb as well. It really helped with the throttle response. Mine just hit 16,000 miles and it still does great. Those miles were not easy too. Overall just a solid bike. Not the best at anything but it damn sure does everything.

    I once got to ride a XR400 at a dual sport event. I loved it. My buddy had installed an electric starter with parts from a Honda quad. The battery was not strong enough to start it first thing in the morning but once it had been started with the kicker you could easily restart it the rest of the day with the button.

    Greetings from across the pond.
    Great video, so refreshing to listen to a like minded view.
    I started off trail riding many moons ago on an XR250R here in the UK. Great bike but then went on to do enduros etc on later and better ( supposedly) more modern machines, also great fun.
    I have recently got back in to trail riding in my mid 50's on a 1995 DR250RS - Basically the same spec as your DRZ250 of latter years with the air-cooled twin cam motor. An electric start XR in many ways. It's all I need now and I suspect that it was probably always all I needed. If I swapped bikes with David Knight the results wouldn't be reversed that's for sure.
    Happy trails gents and thanks again for the trip.

    I bought my '90 DR-350 L new, rode it for a few months and converted it myself into a plated bike. I rode it for 31 years in the Desert mostly with 10% street use. I got a KTM 450 EXC and Suzi sat lonely until my Son said He wanted a bike so I gave her to Him and She has got her second wind as we ride all over together! She has about 10K on her and a modded airbox, Cobra slip on, jetting and some Race Tech Emulators in the fork. Nothing has broken, and I threw a new Clutch in for the Kid as a Beginner is hard on the old clutch.

    Nice video. I have a dr350se. A buddy of mine has an xr400 made street legal. The xr is by far more purpose built for trails. The xr is lighter and has better suspension. The dr (factory dual sport) is better as a dual sport. Having a 6th gear is really nice for those short trips on the highway. However, we, along with my 70 year old father-in-law on a dr250, did the Wa BDR and and nobody suffered from any shortcomings. I’d have to say that if there are any shortcomings, it’s more from the rider than the bike.

    • @pharettface
      @pharettface  3 роки тому +3

      XR was for sure made to be a straight trail bike and that is what really makes it amazing but even the DS version of the DR350 is very much a dedicated trail bike. At this point I really feel the DS suspension on the DR350 gets a bad wrap because it hasn't been set up properly or maintained. With some new fork oil and springs the rod dampened forks are actually quite decent. With emulators I bet they would be better than any stock Japanese DS bike made today. At the end of things you are right its usually the rider that has the shortcomings not the bikes. This is probably why I am not quite as picky as some guys are, I'll ride any bike and just have fun.

Might end up flipping it as I'm really happy with my modded 99 dirt model. They are a great bike and for those looking to getting into dual sport riding without spending 6-10k and want a simple bike they can learn to ride on and learn to maintian I don't think there's much out there that's any better.

    I have ridden dirt bikes since the 70's, mostly 2 strokers. In my advancing years I found a very clean XR400 with the street legal Baja Designs kit installed and it's my current "serious" off road ride (as compared to my Adv bike KLR 650). I am 6' tall and as you say that's a good height for the bike. As for starting, assuming your engine isn't clapped out, it starts easily with the process, hot or cold. I try to stay in shape because picking it up isn't for sissy's. The fools I ride with think "black diamond" trails are the fun stuff so too often I found myself pushing it, not the bike but my physical stamina! Anyway, it's a great off road ride, never breaks, requires minimual maintenance (as compared to their KTM and BETA's) and is a fun ride. I like no radiators as well so the WR's and other street legal dual sports of today are out. Just more stuff to go wrong and to maintain. Getting lazy these days. Or maybe it reminds me of the CT's, DT's, RT's, IT's, KDX's and PE's of my younger years. Nice riding area by the way.

    I used to have an XR400, and a fellow had a DR350 kickstar only. The XR400 might be lighter on paper, but the DR350 felt lighter for me. Having owned the XR400, i have to admit it is a good farm bike, not really more. It's great for riding trails not more than 50 km away from home, the lights suck, you can't put any heated grips due to it not having a battery, on the highway it vibrates and eats gas like a hog, the gas tank is small. One day I'd like to get a DR350 SE electric start, it has 6 gears, works better on the highway, better gas mileage, parts still can be found, can add a kickstart, heated grips, and make it a bike with the ability to go farther than I would on an XR400. No wonder the guys riding the Mondo Enduro in 1995 rode DR350 bikes, it's a very interesting bike.

    • @pharettface
      @pharettface  2 роки тому +1

      You have some great points. I will say there is a lot to how a bike is set up as well. This XR400 has a bigger tank, LED headlight, new seat, new carb, and a full suspension rebuild. On and off road I feel that I'd choose it over the DR350 9 times out of 10. The DR350 might be more comfortable on the road with the street gearing. I have geared down the DR and it's 6 speed is amazing in the dirt on road its about as buzzy as the XR. I think either bike would be fine with taller gearing. Where the DR really shines is being an all around awesome trail bike and light dual sport. Now days you have to put the work into the set up and rebuild to get the bike where you want it. I hear all too often how the DR350 feels like a floating couch that just bottoms out. Well after 30 years it's time for seals springs and valving. That's almost always the best upgrade we do to these bikes.

    Looks like a fun trail..and l like the review as you ride style! If may add there were a few technical details missed however. The XR does not come with a pumper carb factory.The kick start only Drz l believe is the same or slightly lighter than the XR and the weight between the Drz 400e and XR 400 is only about 15 pounds. I currently own both and honestly don't feel that much weight difference riding them back to back. The XR does handle better in tight woods ect but thats also due to its frame geometry steeper forks. I think it's also worth noting the Drz has more advanced suspension and feels smoother overall. It also has a slightly better gear spread and fair's a little better for those pavement miles between trails.All that said l bought both thinking l would sell the one l favored least. That was four years ago and l still can't make up my mind 😂 l just like them equally but in different ways.Been really wanting to ride the Dr 350 and would love to see more content on it 👍

We have rode the E model and XR400 back to back a fair bit since hermit has both but neither of us would choose the DRZ over the XR. It could be what we ride but handing of the DRZ always feels cumbersome. Over all though most have the S model so we usually compare it off that. Ive had XRs and kick start bikes all my life so it doesnt really bother me but im sure once your spoiled with an e start its probably hard to go back to kicking.

    I owned a 1990 DR350 S just like yours. I called it "The Couch" cause it was so sloppy and squishy on trails. It was hard to start (kick start only, using a VERY specific technique), very heavy, and everything needed rebuilt/maintained since it was so old. Yeah, you can ride it and have a good time. But comparing it to any modern dual sport or dirt bike is a farce. I agree if you're just tooling around in the woods or spending most of your time on roads, the DR is fine. But I think you will get tired of the DR pretty quickly. When I picked up a KTM 450 XC-F a couple years ago, the difference was simply night and day. The 450 was a bit much for me though and I just replaced it this year with a brand new Beta 390 4T Race Edition. Just my $.02 as a fellow "bottom-level" intermediate rider :-)

      @pharettface  3 роки тому +1

      At this point I've done just over 200 miles of trail riding on the DR350. I can say with a properly set up and maintained suspension the DR350 is far from sloppy or squishy (new springs are a must at this age) and I have yet to install the new gold valves yet. An old bike really has to be maintained and brought back to really judge, sure I've done a bit of work to the DR but I disagree it easily compares to newer Japanese DS bikes. The DR is even quite a bit lighter for having an extra 100cc of motor. Mine weighed just over 290lbs on the scale, some of the newer 250s weigh over 320lbs. A 40 pilot jet and an extra trun out on the fuel screw fixed the hard starting. Valve adjusting is another common issue there. Takes some work to get these old bikes back to proper running order but at this price and simplicity of these bikes it's a great deal. No they aren't a KTM or a Beta but Japanese DS bikes never were made to that level. I've even got some single track footage of the DR coming up she didn't do bad at all 😉

      @@pharettface I guess if you were to rebuild it to basically new condition you might be happy with it. I just got tired of fooling with 30-year-old carburetors after working on many older bikes over the years. I never had good luck with any of them even after a complete rebuild. Maybe I'm a shit mechanic haha. These days I prefer to wrench less so these old bikes have lost their appeal to me. Glad you're stoked though, that's really all that matters!

    • @pharettface
      @pharettface  2 роки тому +1

      Hmm those are two very different bikes. Really with the Beta you are getting a substantially more powerful engine, far more modern and capable suspension, and a lot less weight. Even with 4 gals in my beta is almost 30lbs lighter. The DR350 is an awesome torquey fun trail bike and or dual sport. It's very capable but in some scenarios she is just out of her element. If you want a single track beast the DR isn't it. If you want a primary dual sport the DR will be more comfortable. IMO the beta is more versatile because it can be geared to suit your needs for DS work or hard off road riding. But ultimately it's a question of what your budget can afford and how much maintenance you want to do. DRs are old and it's always a risk to get one that has serious issues. A new bike may be a safer choice. My beta 390 has over 300 hours on the motor with no issues. I have both for a reason haha. They are unique bikes.

      @@pharettface Thank you so much for responding! I don’t know if you can give me any guidance here, but I started on an old klx300r, which I loved, but due to some health restraints I needed an e-starter. After a bunch or reviews I decided to go with a newer KTM XCF350, but realized after I got it home from the dealer that it was pretty heavily modified and is just simply too twitchy for low speed riding. I am leaning towards getting a beta but not sure if I should go with the 390 or the 430. I liked the smoother throttle of the klx and I don’t know if one of the bikes lends itself to that feeling more than the other. I can’t find any local bikes to try out and at such an investment I don’t want to make the wrong choice. Any advice you could give would be amazing!

With the softer spring the bike would squat when I sat on it and made it more manageable to ride. Although I sold recently and won't buy another xr4 I never really enjoyed that bike. Always felt uncomfortable riding it. I recently rode a xr 250 year 2002 and it felt way better. love the dr350 and the xr 400 but you are mistaken about modern bikes vs these old gals. The ones you were comparing to are obviously heavier but a bike like a ktm 350 has 50hp compared to 33hp and weighs 50lbs less, and the suspension is lights years better. My friend has almost 20k miles on his with only oil changes, tires and chains. I know of a few people that have ktm 500's that have upwards of 80k miles before they needed a top end and they weigh roughly the same as the ktm 350.
    Not talking trash about the DR350 and XR 400, I have a DR and I love it, and it's the bike I'd choose in a zombie apocalypse, but my ktm is a much better bike all around

      I mean at the price points they sure should be lol. Owning a rental company and a shop these days and riding all the bikes under the sun you are right in most aspects the Euro bikes do it better. However I stand by the fact they are not simple trail/DS bikes. Mellow soft easy going comfortable. You dont get that with my Beta 390 or Beta 500. When I go out and ride the DR I am more relaxed. Idk its a different ride than the new bikes and I miss that at times.

    • @pharettface
      @pharettface  2 роки тому +3

      The DRZ is heavier, has a far less capable and adjustable suspension, identical HP and Torque while not having rads to break, more maintenance needs, and has less ground clearance. Better is always subjective but as we have had both a upgraded DRZ400E and XR400 out back to back many times, I've never thought the DRZ is better. Quite the opposite in most cases. I rocked a DRZ 400S for 10 years loved it to death but its a bike of many compromises. I'd take a XR400 or even my DR350 out on the trails before our DRZ400E.
