  • Ou or Ow? Do we have any guidelines for children? Regrettably, no!
    It's important to teach kids certain principles about when to use which spelling because ow and ou have the same sound and can both be written in words for the diphthong /ou/.
    There are laws in English that require us to choose some alternative spellings, yet not all of them. One of them is Ou and Ow. Considering the facts, we as teachers must assist our students in any case. In hopes of helping our young learners start using OU/OW with some confidence, I've tried to incorporate some typical spelling patterns or, you see, some hints.
    Although they can be helpful to young readers and writers, keep in mind that they are only a few suggestions and not rules. Remember that practice makes perfect. So simply visit the Free Spelling Rules Worksheets page of my website and download the free worksheets for ou/ow. Below is a link to it.

    The word "you" ends with u. How do you explain that?

    • @HomeschoolingwithHira
      @HomeschoolingwithHira  2 місяці тому +1

      You and I are two pure exceptions to the rule that English words don't end in i, u, v, and j.
      An old English word "thou" also falls into this category.
      English rules are made by keeping in mind the maximum number of words following them, but there are always some exceptions as well.
      Hope this helps.

    Ma'am, Words like 'Blood', 'Flood ''OO' sounds small 'a' sound. why? Is there any rule? Please explain me madam.

    • @HomeschoolingwithHira
      @HomeschoolingwithHira  7 місяців тому

      There isn't any rule for this. As I told you before English is a non-phonetic language and we can't decode everything with rules. So take it easy. Make a list of words that use "oo' as the "u" sound.
      In Blood and Flood, is saying the short vowel "u" sound not "a".
      Hope this helps.

    Madam then what about AU and AW ? , EW and EU ?

    • @HomeschoolingwithHira
      @HomeschoolingwithHira  7 місяців тому

      "Au and aw" are pronounced the same way but not like "ou or ow".
      "Ew and ue" are the spelling for the long U sounds.
      For example: Few, New, Cue, value
      Long U also says the long oo sound as in BLUE and GLUE.
      To learn the above-mentioned sounds and spelling, check out these videos.

    Hello Hira .. words like mountain , amount are exceptions from this tip ?

    • @HomeschoolingwithHira
      @HomeschoolingwithHira  2 роки тому

      Hi, I appreciate your query.
      As I mentioned in the video that if the /ou/ sound is followed by n or l at the END OF A WORD, write it with and if you have noticed the words that I used were all mono-syllabic words. So words like mountain and amount, don't fall into this category. If the/ou/ sound is in the middle of multi-syllabic words, it's safer to write .
      Hope this will help.
      Thank you.

      Hi, as I mentioned that these are not any rules but tips that you can use at the early stages. Every word doesn't follow this pattern but most of the words do. This is true for English spelling rules as well. There are always some exceptions to rules.

    • @HomeschoolingwithHira
      @HomeschoolingwithHira  6 місяців тому

      Rainbow is a compound word.
      Rain+bow. That's why it's ending in because sounds long O at the end of English words.
