    My white father went to college for free. The year he attended is the first year women were allowed to enroll. He truly believes he has been a victim of DEI even though he literally did not have to reasonably compete against 50% of the population.
    Also, he was fired for falling asleep on camera in a conference call with a client. After he was given a warning FOR THE SAME THING. His excuse was that his last boss let him do it for years. But it's POC who don't deserve their position and were unfairly promoted. And women. Uh huh.

      Thats not a logical arguement. You are saying that because that person deserved to be fired, DEI isnt a problem? Face it, half of jobs/universities in my country now have quotas/goals. So not promoting/hiring/admitting a POC makes you look bad to shareholders as when a certain percentage have/should be POC. Its stupid to think that people aren't hired for their race.

    I'm at one of those universities affected by a statewide DEI ban, and it's been a nightmare. They had to shut down the pride center and the multicultural office. Programs meant to cut sexual assault and power based violence had to slash their curriculums to remove any mentions of race or gender (meaning they can't talk about sexual, racism, hate crimes, etc). I feel your pain. It's enraging, there are millions who legitimately _need_ help and will never be able to get it, unless they're one of the "lucky" ones who finally receive some assistance, but only after they are completely destitute and their lives are totally ruined. And people have the gall to call them _entitlement_ programs. "Promote the general welfare" my chapped ass. Neoliberalist capitalism has turned this country into a shining shit hole with tiny ostentatious playgrounds for the rich and turned its people into nonthinking cruel cynical and spiteful petty tyrants. I can't help but often think we're fubared as a society and even as a species.

    Pretty sure we spend more than that on printer ink for the federal government. A single fighter jet costs twice that. I think we can calm down about $250 million to make sure everyone has a fair shake at a federal job and advancement in that job.

    I'm so glad long covid was included in this episode! Back in 2022 I tried to tell normal people and doctors that I'm not testing positive, but I'm exhausted. I didn't start having a normal energy level until a year later.

    • @Brandon-a-writer
      @Brandon-a-writer 3 місяці тому +5

      same here. i lost a prominent job covering news online after contracting COVID and (seemingly) never really recovering from it. Lost my sense of focus, all energy, and had no ability to really focus and concentrate on my work. The perpetual tiredness, the lethargy and listlessness has not gone away completely. I'm not able to drink coffee or energy drinks, so it is really quite miserable. I hope you are able to get through it. I've been having better days … Any time I have a work deadline and have to put down 3-5k words over the course of free days, the only way I've been able to focus is to literally take an Adderall, which makes me feel like absolute shit because it conflicts with my anxiety, for which I have been treated for the last 20 years. It's become a struggle just to keep turning my work in on time, I have trouble focusing and I don't know how long it is going to last. And I have a 16 year old son.
      Do take care of yourself, I hope you continue to feel better. Is there anything you can recommend that will help?

    • @MisterFoxton
      @MisterFoxton 3 місяці тому +13

      I think that discounts the fact that plenty of cookers exist without the need for CTE and we all have to share the planet with them AND that his family had distanced themselves from him before his dozen years in the NFL. Not that we know the full story but sometimes that specific breed of crazy does cause family separation.

    • @cericat

      Or he was just always shit, plenty of folks including a good friend have developed CTE without joining the tinfoil hat brigade. What anti-DEI people don't seem to understand is that in many areas, college admissions to prestigious schools especially, there are always more qualified applicants than the institution is able to accept. DEI policies should be designed to help ensure that the admitted classes are not under represented just because the admission office has some known or unknown bias. Instead, when you have a sea of equally qualified candidates some of the choice does come down to measurable socioeconomical factors which is more fair. Unfortunately, there is always somone losing a spot that they would have otherways gained if they were in the other system. Now legacy status or hownmuch your parents donate to the school seems like a reasonable thing to get upset about if your mad about the idea of someone stealing your spot at the table.

    I just want to defend my industry really fast. If your DEI work is focused on hiring, you're not doing DEI, you're doing affirmative action. Demographics are important, but they're lagging indicators. If your DEI work is doing its job, it should be about transformative culture work, and hiring can be an indicator that that's happening, but if you're having the hiring without the culture work, all you're going to do is traumatize a lot of marginalized people. Can DEI be performative bullshit? Yes. But please don't let the good things we're doing be overshadowed by HR departments who are doing their best to dismantle it.
