    ℹ️ About the Episode: When we recorded our episode on How fast is too fast to tow, Eric from Techno RV said, "While we're in our truck with cruise control on, our trailer is having a much different experience." He's right. Trailers are hanging on for dear life-which explains why, when we stop for fuel, we occasionally see pillows and other items on the floor. Just as it's hard to know what's going on with the trailer's interior, it's also hard to know exactly what's going on with the trailer tires, especially whether they're balanced or not. When tires are out of balance, they can wear prematurely and make for an uncomfortable ride. In the case of trailer tires, this wear can add unnecessary stress to the trailer. We learned about Centramatic wheel balancers from the community and friends who have installed them on their trucks. These wheel balancers work on trucks, too-but on the truck, I can tell if the wheels are out of balance while driving. The trailer seemed like the best place to start.
    This video explains how wheel balancers work and shows the simple installation process. If you add them to your trailer, just make sure you check the bolt pattern first. We also install the Ford TPMS sensors in this episode. The installation process for these is not as simple, but we offer some ideas to make it easier. Why did we add these? Your standard truck TPMS does not include temperature, which can be another indicator of a potential tire failure.

    Mark, I wish I had a dollar for every time I've been told there is no need to balance a trailer tire. All my trailers, regardless of size, i.e. RV or motorcycle, ALWAYS have balanced tires. It just makes sense!!

    Mark, one thing to point out…more and more Discount Tires are using Road Force Balancing. When you see that metal cylinder push up against the tire as it’s it being balanced, that’s a road force equipped balancing machine. What that cylinder does is simulate road force on the tire, giving the machine a more accurate reading of balance requirements. It can make a huge difference in the accuracy of the tire balance. 👍

      Agreed! We purchased an RV 3 yrs ago b/c of this channel - we were complete newbies, my husband is extremely busy so I am the one that has learned everything and I owe it all to Mark! I feel extremely competent with our RV (even though we don’t get to use it much) - I never felt like a newbie. I was surprised on the last video that he mentioned people don’t like to see these videos that much but then again, we camp next to others that do crazy things like parking their RV on a hill in front of a lake with inappropriate chalking so I think a lot of people don’t want to be taught.

    We blew a tire on the highway with about 4000 miles on the tires. I had my tire aid ramp, socket to remove the tire, and my torque wrench to tighten it back on. However, the nut holding the spare onto the mounting bracket was a different size that I did not have. I did manage to get it off with an adjustable wrench and made sure we had that socket within 24 hours.

    10 to 12 ounces of BBs in your tires will also continuously balance your wheels as you drive. They work well for any size wheel. The larger the wheel, the more BBs you need.
    Ceramic balance beads are also available, but they are very pricey.

    Brilliant decision to add the Centramatic wheel balancers. We put them on our Airstream when it was new in 2018. I have hit my share of potholes over the years, but we have never had any abnormal tire wear. When we replaced the tires about 6 months ago (35K miles) due to age, the tread wear was absolutely even on all 4 tires. You confirmed why we will stick with our TST TPMS. It is nice that the sensors are inside the tires, but I don't like that the "navigator" can't monitor the tire pressures or respond to an alarm while we are on the road. Safe travels in the hot and smokey NW!

    I installed Centramatic balancers on my F450 and Momentum 399TH before it even hit the road for the first trip. The trailer now has 46k+ miles on it and the original tires have 75% of the tread left with NO unusual wear patterns. My truck's steer tires made it 45k miles before I changed them and the drives made it 55k miles before they were replaced. I am a HUGE fan of Centramatic balancers. I wish they fit disc brake hubs since my next trailer will have disc brakes.

    I used to use a 4-way on my trucks and tires and never had an issue. That said, I recommend people use a socket, breaker bar, and digital torque adapter to make sure they properly tighten the lug nuts when they put them back on. Too loose or tight can cause nuts to come loose and fall off, but it's more likely it'll cause the stud to sheer off and they you can't do anything without taking the whole thing apart and replacing wheel studs and lug nuts or even the whole wheel bearing hub.

    The manual TPMS learning for our Chevy would have been a hassle too. I bought an $8 pairing tool and was done in one walk around. We upgraded to a fifth wheel this summer and our psi is out of range for the Chevy TPMS. Love the content, wouldn't have had the confidence to start without kyd videos. Curious about the balancer as it attaches to the hub, I thought weight weight compensation between the wheel and tire is what smoothed out the ride. Guess if you wanted to test it you could have them put the balancer in the balance machine with an unbalanced tire and see if it reads a balanced tire.

Our 2024 Chevy has the tire monitor system and we have an extra set of sensors so the RV and Pontoon Boat (not at the same time) tires are monitored on the dash. Our installer programmed both sets in under 2 minutes with his scan tool. Not sure on the Ford but GM also provides internal temperature on the tires.

    One thing on the Centric balancers is I put them on my Super Duty and it took cooler weather and windows down to figure out that until you get above like 30 mph the material sliding around the ring sounds like the brake dust shield rubbing the rotors times 4. Great for highway driving but a bit noisy city driving. I didn't know they made them for smaller hubs. Good to know.

    the principle of the Centramatics is the same way they balance a washing machine tub. You can also dynamically balance your tires with other media in the tire, (thus the tire balance beads) or the old school way, just add a antifreeze to your tires, except not with modern air pressure censors, but its the same principle.

    Looks like Discount Auto Tire installed the Centromatic Wheel Balancers backwards. The position they placed them would allow the wheel center to squash them toward the brake drum. If they were installed flush to the brake drum then when the lugs are tightened, everything is flush and tight. Pull a trailer wheel off and look. The balancer is squashed to the drum after the wheel was tightened. Too bad it did not come with installation instructions.

    I added the Ford integrated trailer TPMS system for my RV as well. But, I have 17.5" wheels and the valve stem is 0.625" instead of the 0.452" you find on most rims. Ford does not make a TPMS valve stem in that size, but I found a company out of Arizona that sells them. You remove the sensor from the factory valve stem and bolt it to the replacement valve. They are something like $20 or so. BTW, the max air pressure you can set for the Ford trailer TPMS is 125PSI. I run 18 ply load range J tires on 8k axles and 128PSI is their cold rating. Running down hot Texas summertime highways, they can get up to 147PSI. That sounds insanely high but my tire guy says that's normal and these tires are made to handle it. The guys selling the valve stems say they are rated to 200PSI. Sorry Mark, I'm not using a load table for my tires. My heavy RV trailer rides just fine. :)

It won't look like it's working for the first half of the first bottle. But use it generously for the first bottle (not like over the course of one day... more like over the course of those few weeks). By the time you're near the end of the 1st bottle and on to subsequent bottles... Game. Changer. My windshield never looks like how yours looks at the 47 second mark of this video. Just gotta make sure to use it regularly to keep the coating current. I can't live without it!

    • @KeepYourDaydream
      @KeepYourDaydream  29 днів тому

      Maybe a "booster" is built-in? I didn't add one. No option for a spare sensor.

    If you are done using the spring bars you should just get a B&W hitch so you can just flip it into stow mode when you unhook

      I've been wanting to change hitches, but really like the long shank so I can open teh tailgate. This is a good winter project as I think it will take a couple shanks to get it right.

    Thought we weren't supposed to use a jack on Dexter torsion axle since it could bend them and instead use the frame to jack up the trailer.

    • @KeepYourDaydream
      @KeepYourDaydream  29 днів тому +1

      Close to wheel works fine. Jack points are too high with lift. There is a frame member that could have been used.

    Good stuff. Did I read your tire right that your trailer tires are 5 years old? thought I saw week 46, year 19.... Still amazed that you have found your best towing without a weight distribution hitch, but like you said in an earlier video, the real test is on the road, and if that is working the best then there is no argument for sure. This balancer idea is pretty neat. I am going to check into that for sure. I still find the best tire pressure monitor is a true pressure check before every tow day, and a good kick every time I stop... gotta be careful when in sandals though... continued safe travels....

      You have amazing eyes! Yes, 46 19. This trailer has been used much and clearly the tires were either covered or in the shade. I'm down to my last millimeter and will change this winter. I would have done it now, but I'm moving to the 16" Sendel wheel. Yes, the Airstream tows so much softer now with the rigid tension from the bars. We almost hit a deer at full speed and swerved (camera wasn't on) and the trailer tracked to perfection. Proper tongue weight is key. Your right about checking manually... and free.

    Don’t forget a torque wrench to properly tighten lug nuts after changing a tire on the side of the road.

    I wonder if it was you who I saw while driving through Sea Ranch a week or so ago? I also have a newer White Ford truck towing an Airstream. The person driving towards me flashed their lights in recognition of similar rigs while navigating California highway one. Regardless, my wife and I frequently watch your channel. Keep up the good work!

    To make things faster on the tire change would be to buy an electric impact strong enough for vehicle and trailer lug nuts. The less time spent by traffic is less chance of being hit
