  • The Chesapeake 1000 is a huge floating crane working to clear sections of debris from the Baltimore bridge that collapsed after being struck by a ship. But there's an even larger crane laid up in New York that could swing into action to help rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

    Good concise explanation.

    Chesapeake 1000 should be called Chesapeake 907, since it can lift 907 metric tons.

    BTW, the concrete and asphalt road bed isn't attached to the section just lifted. All of that is still on the bottom of the river channel and will likely pose a significant challenge.

    • @electrolytics
      @electrolytics Місяць тому +1

      Why should that be a challenge? Just leave it down there, it's flat.

      @electrolytics they need the depth in the channel to get large ships in and out

      I don't believe dredges can handle it. Will take clamshell cranes IMHO.

    • @bwhog
      @bwhog Місяць тому +4

      @@gregsiska8599It'll have to be broken up first. It's largely in gigantic, really heavy slabs, remember. For some, i supposes there is a chance of putting enormous anchor bolts in and lifting them up that way, but just preparing them in all that muck and slime when you can't see two feet in front of you (literally) would in itself be a massive challenge.

    • @bwhog
      @bwhog Місяць тому +3

      @@electrolyticsThe channel is only 35 feet deep. The draft of some of these ships is close to 30 ft, if not over, already.

    I've been following the clearance of the wreckage. They don't seem to be in a hurry to free the ship- I would think that would be a high priority.

      They have been working nearly nonstop since the disaster. Considering they have to remove a number of containers, other spans to the side of the ship, the span on the ship and then the road on the ship I am considering it will take some time.

    Haha they are still stuffing and farting around with it, just lift the debris off the bow of the MV so the ship can move back to dock, get repaired and have the rest of the containers unloaded.
