Vodka is a unique drink. How you describe it's quality is completely unintuitive. Generally speaking, a better vodka has *less* pronounced flavors. A basic way to look at it is that it should be as flavorless as possible. Obviously as you get more invested into it it does get a little more complex, but that's the gist. Which is honestly why I prefer whiskey, like Scotch or Bourbon, because it's way more interesting in my opinion. Even the cheapest whiskeys are more interesting than the most expensive vodkas I've tried. But, to each there own.
Smirnoff is the best thing to drink. It's the best for mixing and drinking straight. As a soldier, $7 for a bottle and medium jug of fruit juice was all I spent on alcohol for about two weeks. Cheap, high-quality mellow feeling minus the awful hangovers.

I remember Mythbusters testing this, and determining that it’s almost impossible for anyone, expert or not, to blind-judge vodka. And Alton Brown later said that the difference between $20 vodka and $60 vodka is… $40 worth of bottle.
Because Vodka is by definition pure ethanol mixed with water. The only difference between brands is the water they use which can have a slightly different taste. An imperfect distillation process (which would be expected from the cheapest brands) can also leave impurities in the ethanol and alter the taste. If you can still taste the original fruit/plant used to make the alcohol then you are drinking a cheap, low quality vodka. Lastly, brands could also add artificial flavoring to try to differentiate themselves from the competition but once again, this would typically be something that low quality brands do.
I will disagree. I’m Ukrainian living in Poland and I can approve that there is difference between ukr and pol vodka in smell and taste. Mostly Ukrainian vodka was better but there is one more thing, some vodka brands can taste different through the years or in other countries. I don’t know how to explain this but this could be the reason of water quality or distillation.
@@cedric7751 you clearly don't know anything about alcohol distillation there are a lot of factors involved even with something like vodka a good vodka should minimize the offensive tastes and odors while still retaining a floral and or herbaceous flavor purely from the oils that were distilled into the alcohol from the original Mash. Buffalo Trace Distillery the most award-winning whiskey distillery in the world recently came out with a high-end vodka distilled 179 times personally by their Master distiller Harlan Wheatley and it still had flavor.

I laughed so hard at him after he drank some of the moonshine because the next day he asked if we go blind drinking that stuff........ Its been 5 years. Im still drinking it 10/10 recommend. The only down side is that I lost my wife and kids and my home and my job, i cut some ties from differences, But On a positive side is that I’m on top of a hill enjoying the view with a gallon of Popov. This guy knows his stuff. Hopefully one day my family knows whats good vodka.

I tried Grey Goose again recently. Second time around after many years of alcoholism. I seriously thought that it tasted about the same quality as Popov. I took about 52 shots and absolutely could not tell the difference.
The worst vodka I ever had was a local high end micro-distillery. Tasted like melted plastic bags. My friend worked there and was so proud. I didn't have the heart to tell her.
The only vodka I've ever drunk is Smirnoff. He said the taste was "inoffensive". I wonder what all the other strong vodkas must taste like, since Smirnoff itself makes me want to puke.

Popov reminds me of drinking as a kid. Friends would fill water bottles with it (cause there’s just so much in the bottle) then they’d leave the water bottles around the house. You ever just open a water bottle and take a drink, only to find out it’s pure vodka? Great times

Luksusowa is best vodka. Not much more expensive than these, and as someone who can't do dark liquor and is in love with all clear, Luksusowa is the vodka I keep around at all times. Best mule vodka on earth.

I do not lie, I once went to a wine tasting evening led by an expert who explained all the metrics we had to assess a wine by. We then had a series of wines to try, and judge by the metrics. We did not know what the wines were and such was revealed at the end of the evening. The most expensive scored bottom, the cheapest (some supermarket cheap plonk) came top. I remember that the most expensive tasted like vinegar and was almost undrinkable.
Sounds like the expensive bottle was corked. Something that only happens with real wooden corks in bottles. No wine should ever taste of vinegar, it is the sign of a bacterial infection.

I did a blind tasting of a bunch of cabs from the same vitner, different ages and price points with a group of people who allege to know their wines. At the end of the night, the $20 bottle was the winner; the $200 bottle was the bottom. Several folks were pretty upset that they got their ranking wrong. I was stoked to find out a $20 wine is all you need to impress some houseguests.
Black Smirnoff is ok - but red is not. Finlandia and Absolut very, very good. Then some smoked flavored vodkas very good. Bison grass vodka - good. Luksusowa is potato vodka. The worst vodkas are those from plastic bottles - bleh.

As an "actual" expert on alcohols since my sailing and college days, when it comes to the standard cheap stuff, at least in the US, Smirnoff is hard to beat. When in Europe I'll usually go for Serkova if I had to choose between the two. I find the taste differences between corn vs grain so subtle that it's negligible - motivating me to simply reach for the cheaper option.
depends on a vodka really. For example a "Khortytsa Premium" from Ukraine has a tiny, sweet aftertaste, that you can catch only once you've swallowed it already
They should have thrown in some top shelf vodka that a long time ago he rated as A or A+ as controls in between the bottom-shelf. Otherwise, he already knows all of them are bottom shelf, so he's psychologically expecting all of them to taste like crap and it skews his assessments.

What you tell them the wine costs influences theri opinion so mch that many wine tasters even rate theier own previusly good rated wines as bad if they are told its cheap

Cheap vodka has her own clarity for me. Most of my life I've been drinking absolute, smirnov, serkova and stuff. After, having some better, higher end, vodka I have to say that cheap vodka is sometimes a better psychological experience

I don’t think they literally mean it tastes like nothing, I just think you get desensitised to the harshness of the taste. Tequila shots used to make me gag and want to curl up and die, now I can throw them back pretty easy and actually kinda like the taste, it’s just something you acquire. When I was in college in the 70s, the municipal power house in the first city on the Mississippi sold Popov cheaper than cases of returnable Old Milwaukee. Pitchers of lemonaid bullfrogs was first choice but any other Koolaid was a good mix except for red which aggravated my gastritis.
Well C is passing/Average so that makes sense actually. It tasted like it was supposed to and didn't try anything interesting so it couldn't rise above any of the others.
It's quite scary how vodka brands change over time. Belvedere used to be a great vodka, now last year when I and a friend of mine compared it to Absolwent which is the cheaper national version of Belvedere, Absolwent was better.
Yeah but the problem is lots (most) people think some crap like Titos is high end. Let them try Stolichnya or Finlandier and see what they say. I tried that with a bunch of my wife's friends who swear by Titos, even though they can't name another brand they tried let alone liked. Well anyway I made believers about Stoli out of them. Why in the beginning of the video did he state 'I'm going to taste test bottom shelf vodka". The audience should know that the vodka is cheap not the person doing the taste testing. No. Vodka is supposed to have a really mild flavour. That's the reason why it's filtered, after all, after it has been distilled. You don't triple distill, quintuple filter stuff if you want them to have a very conspicuous flavour.
I think you're missing his point. He basically said Smirnoff had nothing bad about it, but nothing exceptional either. In other words, it's middle of the road. That's more or less the definition of a "C" grade.
Popov is harsh as well for me, the smell immediately makes me want to vomit. I love vodka still to this day, although I lean more towards decent tequila (|I’d take a Cazadores over Titos, for example). I honestly couldn’t take any of this seriously when he rated it highly, it’s one of the worst vodkas I’ve ever tasted and has such a strong pungent burning smell it doesn’t even mix well. The others aren’t good either but at least they blend decently. Took several passes through a Britta filter (back in the day when it was easier to get a filter than specific alcohol brands being underaged) to make it passable.

I tried Grey Goose again recently. Second time around after many years of alcoholism. I seriously thought that it tasted about the same quality as Popov. I took about 52 shots and absolutely could not tell the difference.

I do not lie, I once went to a wine tasting evening led by an expert who explained all the metrics we had to assess a wine by. We then had a series of wines to try, and judge by the metrics. We did not know what the wines were and such was revealed at the end of the evening. The most expensive scored bottom, the cheapest (some supermarket cheap plonk) came top. I remember that the most expensive tasted like vinegar and was almost undrinkable.
That's why the French weren't too happy when cheap supermarket wine arrived.
Sounds like the expensive bottle was corked. Something that only happens with real wooden corks in bottles. No wine should ever taste of vinegar, it is the sign of a bacterial infection.

I did a blind tasting of a bunch of cabs from the same vitner, different ages and price points with a group of people who allege to know their wines. At the end of the night, the $20 bottle was the winner; the $200 bottle was the bottom. Several folks were pretty upset that they got their ranking wrong. I was stoked to find out a $20 wine is all you need to impress some houseguests.

As an "actual" expert on alcohols since my sailing and college days, when it comes to the standard cheap stuff, at least in the US, Smirnoff is hard to beat. When in Europe I'll usually go for Serkova if I had to choose between the two. I find the taste differences between corn vs grain so subtle that it's negligible - motivating me to simply reach for the cheaper option.

As someone who works at a liquor store, the Popov buyers notice that herbal and savory quality that’s why they buy it.
They should have thrown in some top shelf vodka that a long time ago he rated as A or A+ as controls in between the bottom-shelf. Otherwise, he already knows all of them are bottom shelf, so he's psychologically expecting all of them to taste like crap and it skews his assessments.

I’m trying to think of some a quasi-normal advice (without calling the kettle black). I guess I’m lucky I get BAD hang-overs which limits my alcohol intake. I hit a point where I say to myself ‘this NEXT drink WILL give me a hangover”. I get HORRIFIC hangovers. So at a point I might stop drinking, I’ll say to myself, ‘is it worth it?’ Because my hangovers totally ruin the next day. What’s that saying “everything in moderation”. I won’t bring up cannabis. ALSO, you mention “I’m the alcoholic”, WE ALL drink some are in denial some think 3 drinks a night is normal….where do you draw the line. EVERYBODY draws a different line!! So who is right/wrong? Cheap vodka has her own clarity for me. Most of my life I've been drinking absolute, smirnov, serkova and stuff. After, having some better, higher end, vodka I have to say that cheap vodka is sometimes a better psychological experience

Drinking alcohol is fine and all but you gotta have a limit... So yeah, the "cant stop drinking alcohol" doesnt always necessarily mean that that person is addictive but in that context they were talking about addiction rather than your lifestyle/habit/hobby
If you can genuinely put a vodka in your mouth and say it tastes and smells like nothing as if it's water or something then you're very very broken.
I find that very hard to believe unless you've really fucked up your taste buds and other important parts of your senses.
I don’t think they literally mean it tastes like nothing, I just think you get desensitised to the harshness of the taste. Tequila shots used to make me gag and want to curl up and die, now I can throw them back pretty easy and actually kinda like the taste, it’s just something you acquire. When I was in college in the 70s, the municipal power house in the first city on the Mississippi sold Popov cheaper than cases of returnable Old Milwaukee. Pitchers of lemonaid bullfrogs was first choice but any other Koolaid was a good mix except for red which aggravated my gastritis.

It's quite scary how vodka brands change over time. Belvedere used to be a great vodka, now last year when I and a friend of mine compared it to Absolwent which is the cheaper national version of Belvedere, Absolwent was better.
Yeah but the problem is lots (most) people think some crap like Titos is high end. Let them try Stolichnya or Finlandier and see what they say. I tried that with a bunch of my wife's friends who swear by Titos, even though they can't name another brand they tried let alone liked. Well anyway I made believers about Stoli out of them. Now a couple of them show up with it and leave that grape leaf fermented Titos crap at home

Why in the beginning of the video did he state 'I'm going to taste test bottom shelf vodka". The audience should know that the vodka is cheap not the person doing the taste testing. Therefore, when he does the taste test he won't have the thought of bottom shelf vodka in his head. No need to get angry, it's just common sense.

No. Vodka is supposed to have a really mild flavour. That's the reason why it's filtered, after all, after it has been distilled. You don't triple distill, quintuple filter stuff if you want them to have a very conspicuous flavour.

I think you're missing his point. He basically said Smirnoff had nothing bad about it, but nothing exceptional either. In other words, it's middle of the road. That's more or less the definition of a "C" grade.

Popov is harsh as well for me, the smell immediately makes me want to vomit. I love vodka still to this day, although I lean more towards decent tequila (|I’d take a Cazadores over Titos, for example). I honestly couldn’t take any of this seriously when he rated it highly, it’s one of the worst vodkas I’ve ever tasted and has such a strong pungent burning smell it doesn’t even mix well. The others aren’t good either but at least they blend decently.
Took several passes through a Britta filter (back in the day when it was easier to get a filter than specific alcohol brands being underaged) to make it passable.
