▬ ABOUT THIS VIDEO ▬
Pimsleur Spanish Review (Is It Worth It?). In this video, John from the Test Prep Insight team covers his review of the Pimsleur Spanish course and app. For this review, John collaborated with an expert linguist who is fluent in five different languages, including Spanish. John covers the major pros and cons of the Pimsleur Spanish program. John talks about how the Pimsluer Spanish course is structured and what their lessons are comprised of. He then talks about what he likes and what he doesn't like about Pimsleur. Topics that come up during this portion of the video include the Pimsleur learning method, their audio lessons and all the drills and exercises they employ. Other topics of discussion include grammar instruction, pronunciation practice and Pimsleur's digital platform and mobile app. Overall, John is a big fan of Pimsluer in general. He likes that their audio lessons force you participate by speaking in Spanish in the context of real conversations. Thanks for watching this Pimsleur review video. Learning Spanish can be difficult and it takes time, so it's important you select the right language learning program to suit your needs.

My reason for learning Spanish is to be able to communicate with people I work with mainly.
My first Pimsleur program was Vietnamese, and at first I did not think it helped me much. After I arrived in Vietnam I soon found out it did help me a lot and I was able to understand a lot of the basic conversation around me, and speak it too. I purchased Pimsleur's Spanish to refresh my Spanish and have also found it to be very helpful. As an added note, I studied Japanese in university, Spanish in Costa Rica, and soon I will be on my way to Mexico to continue my Spanish studies there. German in Germany, and when I was in Vietnam I studied Vietnamese. I think Pimsleur is excellent support material for language learning.
Thanks for sharing Joe. Totally agree
nice I'm looking into for Vietnam myself since.... I'm vietnamese.....
I just started pimsleur Italian and it is so far amazing ... I really appreciated the comparison between rosetta and pimsleur . I also have done one year of duo lingo ... pimsleur is MUCH better !
Thanks for sharing! Appreciate the feedback and you watching. Glad Pimsleur is working for you :)
This was wonderful, thank you for the insight on learning Spanish effectively!
Thanks for another fantastic review! It makes me want to learn Spanish! The video is super helpful with the decision whether one should use Pimsleur or not. Thorough and comprehensive review!
Very thorough and informative video. Pimsleur sounds like a solid Spanish language course. The video is very helpful with the purchase making decision. Thanks.
I really appreciate all that you’ve done. Thank you!
I will forever be grateful to you for your help. Thank you for all you do!
No words can convey my gratitude for the support I received from you. Just take my heartiest “Thank you.”
😀😀😀👌👌👌🤝🤝🤝🙏🙏🙏
Very informative review. Great video!
This is great! I've been teetering on getting a subscription of Pimsleur to get myself fluent in Spanish. My fiancé and his family speak Spanish and I'm able to keep up mostly with what they say, but I struggle with response to conversation.
Pimsleur would probably be a great fit for you then because it's so focused on conversational skills. Thanks for watching!
I also learn spanish. If you need a conversation partner, let me know.
Thank you for this clear video! So helpful for me in my journey to try to pick the best way to learn Spanish!
Nice! Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching Michael!
Thank you for the reviews and comparisons. I chose a one-year subscription with my primary language being Spanish. I would really like to learn my late father’s language, Portuguese. He was from the Azores and spoke fluent Portuguese. Unfortunately, he passed when I was young and what I learned back then, has been forgotten. Thanks again.
I saw this video a year ago. I kept reminding myself to come back and thank you for your detailed review! I did a lot of research and found that your videos are very thorough and will come back for more reviews!
Thank you for the kind words!
Great review, thank you.
this is super cool didn’t know something like this existed!!
Nice review! Pimsleur seems like a great program.
Definitely agree 100 percent on grammar being something that should be learned with time. We have the apparatus to learn a lot of grammar informally through apps like Pimsleur, or other comprehensible input methods.
Thanks for the review! 🙏
No worries!
Great review you have outlined the pros and cons.
Thanks for this very helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Pimsleur seems like a great option for learning Spanish. Good review.
Now I wanna refresh my Spanish I took long time ago. Great review!
Thanks Felix!
Great review, since I'm busy during the day Pimsleur seems like the way to go to pick up Spanish. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Len!
Your review was very balanced and thorough. My daughter is going to Spain for Study Abroad in a couple of months, and despite the last name, she understands some things, but cannot converse. We were on the fence, but after your review I think I’m a little closer to making a decision on a program for her so that she can have some peace of mind with basic language since the trip alone is scary enough for her. Thank you!
No problem Cristy! Glad we could help. Sounds like she's going to have a great time in Spain. Having some conversational Spanish will definitely help :-)
Make sure, she is aware that the western hemisphere speaks the Latin American dialect, and Spain speaks the Castilian dialect. I visited there in the early 80’s. I just recently learned about the dialects.
Thanks for the information. It was very helpful in making my decision on what to try.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching Bruce!
One of the best language program review channelsever! No cap!
Thanks for the kind words Khan!
I want to learn Spanish in order to communicate with my students and parents. Great video about the pro/cons of the program.
Thanks for watching!
The Pimsleur course seems like a very good option when looking to learn Spanish! Thanks for the great review!
Did you ever use Pimsleur? Did you like it?
Great video, thank you
This would be a phenomenal addition to my nursing. Hope to win!
I am in love with my Girlfriend of almost 2 years. She is half Hispanic, and uses only Spanish when hanging out with her dad’s side of the family. We both graduated college only a year ago, so most of our time and money is spent working off our student loans. I would love to be able to communicate with her family without breaking the bank! I love the videos! And fingers crossed I get selected!
awesome review! thanks for this. Pimsleur sounds good
Thanks Jackie!
Well first of all thank you for the giveaway you are doing!
I would like to learn Spanish to be able to experience a new culture and meet new people. Going on a vacation in Spain or Latin America and knowing the language would be the coolest thing I can image
For sure, no better feeling than being able to converse with locals. Thanks for watching!
Thank you this helped me make up my mind.
No prob! Glad we could help
This video was really informative and great. I would love to learn spanish in order to efficiently communicate with those around me.
Hi. My friend is giving an excellent online spanish course. He is native speaker. Let me know if you need info.
Same! I can't tell you how many times I've only had Spanish speaking Uber drivers and or personal clients interested in buying my from my small business - who know no English...and I wanted so badly to speak to them because they were so kind. I primarily felt even worse when I intuitively felt the sense that they just wanted someone else to fluently talk to...it's really not as common as it should be. People move to the US sometimes because of other terrible circumstances they need to escape and it is so foreign to them. The USA is an English speaking country, BUT, Spanish/Espanol comes in second place. It's the same with people in Canada, they should also learn French, as it is the same thing over there essentially as Spanish is to the US. French is the second most common language in thee land of our friendly neighbors. It's important for connection and social skills. It's also healthy for the brain. I've been trying to learn.
For starters, I've started labeling household items with sticky notes in Spanish (and also in danish, Hebrew, and German). I was actually raised learning Hebrew so I know how to read it and introduce myself...but it's been so long so it's important that I polish it up and become fluent so that when I visit Israel again, I can have fluent conversations and not just introductory and small talk conversatiosn.
I love teaching others things of simple foreign languages..so if you're interested, I also know a variety of other simple Hebrew words.. (ex: Cat - Katool; Butterfly - Par par; Dog - Kelev, Grandma - Arbah; Israel - Yisrael; Hebrew - Eevreet; God - Adonai; Jews - Yehudee; Teacher (feminine) - Morah; Teacher (masculine) - Moreh; I - Anee) and I could go so much further on but...despite this, Spanish is first priority regarding it's importance in the US. Want to keep this already long post short haha.
Some 1-10's for fun for language lovers:
Hebrew: Achad, Shteim, Shalosh, Arbah, Chamesh, Shesh, Shevah, Shmonah, Taysha, Esser
Spanish: Uno, Dos, Tres, Quatro, Cinco, Seis, Siete, Ocho, Nueve, Diez
I want to learn 5 languages before I die...or even more who knows. One day at a time.
@@Dana_at_LAX lets practice together. I also can teach u indonesians. U can master it in 2 months.
Super review mate
Thank you!
I got a used cd set for Spanish 1-5 for 100 dollars. Ripped the MP3's and now I can listen to them anywhere.
Thanks!
I love your reviews
Thank you!
I like Pimsleur training for the emphasis on audio and verbal practice, although I haven't subscribed to it for Spanish lessons.
great pimsleur's spanish language review
Get it used on Amazon. All levels for something like $100. Why get the same thing new for a whole lot more?
This sound like a good method I like the 60 minutes and more conversation. I find listening is the hard part to learn. I especially like the use of some English that you mentioned. I have been doing Rosetta Stone and it's caused me to lose interest because the lack to English to learn what to do. There have been things in RS that come up on screen and I have no idea what to do.
For sure, that's one of the biggest complaints with Rosetta. Pimsleur is not like that all, plenty of English direction. Thanks for watching!
Great comparison
I have always liked the language and since I live in California, I feel like it would help me communicate with people more, especially the families of my students.
For sure! Thanks for watching!
Loved this video. My reason for learning Spanish is that I travel extensively and would like to be able to speak fluently in all Spanish speaking countries, and in areas of the USA that have a proportionately high number of Spanish speakers.
Good reason for learning. Thanks for watching!
How do you get back to the level after you finish the 30 lessons?
"Languages are not written, they're spoken."
100,000 poets and authors hit the "Do not recommend this channel" option.
Yeah, probably not my best choice of words there 🤦♂️. Definitely didn't reflect the point I was trying to make haha ...and the irony isn't lost on me that this is a video about language learning lol 😂
@@TestPrepInsight Glad you took it in good humor.
As someone who is probably at an intermediate level of Spanish speaking, I’ve really struggled to find a program/app to take me over the hump to become completely fluent. Hoping to find a good recommendation to get me over that hump.
Hey Ricardo, thanks for watching! Pimsleur would likely be a good option for you to get over the hump. It's a very challenging program, but in my opinion gives people the best chance at hitting that advanced level and becoming totally fluent.
Thanks so much for the reviews. I tried a subscription of Duolingo for a year but it really frustrated me. I'm not a fan of game like apps. My choice came down to Babbel and Pimsleur. I'm living in Ecuador and need to focus on actual conversational skills so I can hear the language. I appreciate your thorough review and I used your link to sign up. Have a great day.
Thanks Ken for sharing and supporting the channel. Hopefully Pimsleur works for you. Personally, I think Pimsleur is great for developing conversational skills quickly.
Instead of buying a Level 1 course, Pimsleur offers conversational audio cd’s for all of the popular languages. I saw conversational Spanish on a retailer’s page. If you are in the military, they usually have audio cd’s for that country you are serving in.
You’ve mentioned that you can jump from one lesson to another (04:01). That’s not correct since the lessons should be followed in order and they’re built on top of the previous ones
I just started Pimsleur and they now have voice recognition in the app
Pimsleur also offers a straight purchase of their products. Great for those of us who don't subscription plans. Pimsleur is challenging; not for the faint of heart, but effective.
Where can you buy it straight? I used to own the CD set and someone stole it been trying to replace it for years. I was only on lesson 8
you sound like someone doing an actual voiceover. you have a great voice for that. you should try it.
Would love to win a Spanish module. Want to be a better RN. Thanks for the insight
Thanks for watching!
I got Pimsleur at a great deal for the entire Spanish series. I like it, but i use it in conjunction with a few other apps. I don’t like how it just tells you to say something without an explanation why (like why are we using Lo and Su.. no reason given). I think doing both the speaking stuff and the written together, is a good way for me to learn Spanish (1 month in).
I agree. I started learning spanish with just grammer in my first month and started pimsleur later. I noticed that i would be confused if i haven’t studied any grammer first because they don’t explain many things. But still i love this app because it really makes you talk and have conversations which is the most important thing
Great review thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
So for me starting (pretty much from scratch) would you recommend this or Babel? Thank you!
Starting from total scratch, I'd suggest maybe starting with Babbel (for some basics), then transitioning to Pimsleur after a few months: testprepinsight.com/go/babbel-review/
I learn best by reading. It would be nice if Pimsleur had captions at the bottom of the screen. I even watch movies and shows with captions always on because I prefer to read - it just registers better. I've found it difficult just sitting there listening to the Pimsleur audio each day, while with Rosetta Stone I haven't had any problems at all. Pimsleur also needs to make much greater use of voice recognition technology; it just feels far more engaging.
Fair points! thanks for watching!
They have speech recognition now as well!
Learning Spanish because I want to be able to be welcoming and conversational, with my neighbors, new members of my church.
Nice!!
Hi, i dont see the option for 20
$ a moth , only see the option
$575 for evetything or
$150 for 1 , is it changed? Thx Patsy
If you go to the website and click a language, it should only show you the subscription options.
I have Pimsleur I think is very good but Lingo Pie is light years better. you watch movies with subtitles in the target language and in English and you get flash cards and you can click on any word in the sentence and it will explain and pronounce the word. and you also have speed control.
Once again kicking myself for not learning Spanish in school. What an asset! This sounds like a good affordable option though!
Thanks for watching Hilary!
Very helpful
Glad it helped!
Update. Pimsleur has voice recognition technology now to help you with pronunciation.
I have been trying to learn in order to improve the chances of me moving to Spain for work
Nice! Thanks for watching Vega!
If you need more online help, pls let me know. We have Spanish online class.
Pimsleur is useful but it assumes you are about to be a tourist and going out on lots of dates. I use a combo of Pimsleur & Mondly and other avenues.
I did a Japanese free trial in high school. It's worth it.
Hi.I have a question for you.I am learning Spanish with pimsleur, and I am happy thanks to your recomendation. My question is do I need to continue with Rocket or not. Please reply. Thanks
If you have the time to do lessons from both Rocket and Pimsleur, that would be really effective. Good luck!
@@TestPrepInsight Thanks. I will start rockets when I am done with primsleur. As you said they are the best. I believe what you said
I'm doing the Spanish now, 6 lessons in and I'm having to go back and redo lessons because I'm just not at 80% understanding. They do go very fast past lesson 3.... I have to pause and think about the conversations because I just cannot get the words out before they do, and it's spoken so quickly I cannot understand it. I can understand WAY more than I can speak at the moment, but my husband tells me over many months it will click eventually.
I think your husband is right. The understanding always comes before the verbalization of thoughts. Stay at it!
It would have been a really good touch to hear you say a lot more than "hasta luego," amigo.
I am your new subscriber :-) I have one request.. Please review lingodeer for german language especially :-) thank you🙏
Lingodeer is on the list of apps for us to review :-)
@@TestPrepInsight thank you🌹🙏
Michel Thomas language programs review is requested.
I have tried MT also. MT, in their fact sheet-state, their program does not prepare you for fluency. That is a personal goal only that you can achieve.
Iam learning Spanish language because i want to explore Mexico and Spain in the future
Nice!
The Pimsleur Spanish course is good, but what lets it down is the poor quality of the voice actors, who clearly forget (or are not bothered) that they are being listened to by non-Spanish speakers. There are constantly bad examples of these actors - most particularly the male one - pronouncing words too fast, or slurring them together, which often makes it difficult to figure out what is being said. Another issue is that on the recordings, the treble and upper-mid frequencies (2khz - 4khz) are diminished, which destroys the clarity of speech. I was having to transplant, into the files, audio recordings from online translators, which are of better quality! The mp3 files also have occasional transient clicks littered throughout them, which can prove irritating, particularly when they interfere with the words being spoken. Furthermore, after having loaded the lessons into an audio editor and seeing the waveform of the audio files, I found that the hapless audio engineer had failed to apply sufficient (if any) audio limiting, which results in the files being quieter and less defined than they could have been with some professional quality audio engineering. There is clearly too much amateurism involved in the process.
Would this help me learn Mexican Spanish? I learned Spanish for a few months on duolingo and when I started talking to my friend from Juarez Mexico, he said I was trying to speak like people in Spain, and I would have a hard time understanding conversations in Mexico. Especially people in casual conversations. It would be like a German learning English from someone in Boston and visiting me in Mississippi. I would be able to understand him, but he would be lost listening to us talk LOL.
Haha, that's pretty typical. Pimsleur actually offers two Spanish courses - one for Latin American Spanish, and one for Castilian Spanish (how the language is spoken in Spain). The Latin American Spanish course would work for you trying to learn Mexican Spanish.
@@TestPrepInsight thanks for the reply!
I'm learning Spanish to talk with my fiance's family and friends
I really need to learn Spanish to speak fluently Spanish because in my working environment we have many Latino/Latina workers, often when we get calls from Latin people... no one is really comfortable to answer the calls
finger cross to be the lucky person 🤞
Thanks for sharing! Learning Spanish (even just basic fluency) would be helpful for that. Good luck!
Did you ever use Pimsleur? Did you like it?
I want to learn Spanish to speak with my in-laws.
I definitely agree that Pimsleur is worth it!
Thanks for watching!
So there are 5 levels with 30 lessons in each level and each lesson takes about 1 hour to complete. So if you commit an hour/day you’ll more or less be fluent in said language after 150 days for ~$21/month. That’s not bad. That’s ~$105 for high speed “fluency” in a language. 👀
For sure! If you can commit an hour per day, that's awesome. Especially since consistency is key when learning a new language. Pimsleur is an awesome choice if you can make that sort of commitment. 👍
I want to learn Spanish because my girlfriend is from Oaxaca, Mexico and I want to be able to speak with her family!
Thanks for watching Nathan! Hope you found the video helpful!
If you need online class, pls let me know.
Ok forget Spanish, Pimsleur and learning languages .. can we talk about the Tesla touch in the background 😍😍
Glad someone appreciates that :)
What level do you think you’ll be after your finished the program?
I think it can take you to a B2/C1 level if you do the full program
@@TestPrepInsight thank you I’ll do a free trial first . I’m a nurse and this could help me care for my spanish patients.
Oh I think Pimsleur would definitely get you to a fluent enough level to converse with patients. Good luck!
I started learning because my ex’s family is from El Salvador. We broke up but i’m still going!
Thanks for watching Katie!
That’s awesome keep it up! It’s your ex’s loss.
"languages aren't written they are spoken"
Well, lol, they are written and spoken.
Regardless, I do find pimsleur pretty great
I live in a community with a growing Hispanic population. I want to learn Spanish to be able to interact with them, serve them, and help them in learning English.
Very cool! Thanks for watching!
Where do we find the coupons
The coupons you referred to
so this would be good for a native Spanish speaker who isn't fluent
For sure. Pimsleur is a more challenging language program than most, but very effective. Thanks for watching!
Fine 🍷
Pimsleur Does work, It gets you talking from the very beginning. Stick to the Golden Rule.
Totally agree!
Baselang is the best. Pimsluer is better than duolingo
At 10:40 - interesting B roll. Is he typing? Is he pretending to type? Is he missing a finger? Or typing with one finger tucked under his hand???
What is going on?
Donde esta el dedo???
haha, never noticed that! I think it's tucked under his hand. like he's hunting and pecking with the other fingers
@@TestPrepInsight Nobody pays closer attention to your videos than I do. 😂😂😂
Does that mean I win a free language course??? 🙏
Possibly with that level of detailed attention :)
@Test Prep Insight You remind me of Mark Zuckerberg when hes talking about Meta lol
Dude is it just me or is his speech pattern a little hard to listen to I mean this in the most respectful way it's just kind of hard to listen all the way through and I don't know why
Talks too much! I got to 4:22 and had to exit. Boring!

Hey, wots up... I really hate the low-class way that you greeted me on your video...
